1Heavy Metal Accumulation in Medicinal Plants Collected from Environmentally Different Sites显示文摘Objective To estimate the heavy metal content in soil and selected medicinal plants procured from environmentally different sites of the same city. Methods Soil and plant samples of Abutilon indicum, Calotropis procera, Euphorbia hirta, Peristrophe bycaliculata, and Tinospora cordifolia were collected from 3 environmentally different sites of the city: heavy traffic area (HTA), industrial area (IA), and residential area (RA). Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni were estimated in soil and plant samples by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry and compared. Results The level of heavy metal was higher in soil than in plant parts studied. Accumulation of heavy metals varied from plant to plant. Pb was the highest in Calotropis procera root from HTA site and the lowest in Peristrophe bycaliculata whole plant from IA site. It was also lower in residential area than in heavy traffic area. Conclusion The level of heavy metal content differed in the same medicinal plant collected from environmentally different sites of the same city. Thus, it reiterates our belief that every medicinal plant sample should be tested for contaminant load before processing it further for medication.JYOTI BARTHWAL SMITHA NAIR POONAM KAKKAR 2008Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2008,21,4:5
2Screening of Antioxidant Potential of Selected Barks of Indian Medicinal Plants by Multiple in vitro Assays显示文摘Objective To evaluate the antioxidant potential in herbal extract barks of five therapeutically important medicinal plants native to India, i.e. Crataeva nurvala Buch.-Ham., Buchanania lanzan Spreng., Aegle marmelos Corr., Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. ex DC., and Cedrela toona Roxb. Methods Standardized aqueous alcoholic extracts from the selected barks having different target radicals, such as superoxide radical, nitric oxide, ABTS radical, and peroxidative decomposition of phospholipids, were prepared and screened by multiple in vitro assays. These extracts were also tested for total phenolic and tannin content and correlated with antioxidant capacity. Results Total phenolic and tannin contents were found to be the highest in C. nurvala (195 GAE mg/g and 218.3 mg/g CE). SOD mimetic activity was found to be the highest in Crataeva nurvula, although all barks showed activity more than 100 units/mg extract. Lipid peroxidation inhibitory potential was found to be the highest in Crataeva nurvala (83.4% inhibition of MDA formation/10 μg extract), and also showed a comparatively high NO quenching capacity (45.5% per 10 μg extract). The highest NO quenching potential was found in Aegle marmelos (47.3% per 10 μg extract). Cedrela toona showed the lowest LPO inhibitory potential and NO quenching capacity (50.5% and 30.5%, respectively). Buchanania lanzan, a medicinal plant extensively used for inflammatory disorders and Dalbergia sissoo also showed 72.5% and 69.1% LPO inhibitory potential/10 μg extract. Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity ranged from 0.24 to 0.39 mmol/L TEAC/mg extract, indicating that all the barks tested had ABTS+· radical quenching capacity. Conclusion Bark of Crataeva nurvula has the highest antioxidant capacity and a positive correlation between antioxidant activity and their plendic content was found.ARCHANA KUMARI POONAM KAKKAR 2008Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2008,21,1:4

4Efficacy and safety of semaglutide in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the leading cause of chronic liver disease. The prevalence and disease burden of NAFLD are projected to exponentially increase resulting in significant healthcare expenditures and lower healthrelated quality of life.To date, there are no approved pharmacotherapies for NAFLD or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).Semaglutide has glycemic and weight loss benefits that may be advantageous for patients with NAFLD.AIM To investigate the efficacy and safety of semaglutide in patients with NAFLD.METHODS MEDLINE,CENTRAL,and EMBASE were searched from inception to May 1,2023,to identify eligible randomized controlled trials(RCTs).Meta-analysis was performed using random effects model expressing continuous outcomes as mean differences(MD)or standardized MDs(SMD),and dichotomous outcomes as odds ratios(OR)with 95%confidence intervals(CI).Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran’s Q test and I2 statistic.RESULTS Three RCTs involving 458 patients were included.Semaglutide increased the likelihood of NASH resolution(OR:3.18,95%CI:1.70,5.95;P<0.001),improvement in steatosis(OR:2.83,95%CI:1.19,6.71;P=0.03),lobular inflammation(OR:1.81,95%CI:1.11,2.96;P=0.02),and hepatocellular ballooning(OR:2.92,95%CI:1.83,4.65;P<0.001),but not fibrosis stage(OR:0.71,95%CI:0.15,3.41;P=0.67).Radiologically,semaglutide reduced liver stiffness(SMD:-0.48,95%CI:-0.86,-0.11;P=0.01)and steatosis(MD:-4.96%,95%CI:-9.92,0.01;P=0.05).It also reduced alanine aminotransferase(MD:-14.06 U/L,95%CI:-22.06,-6.07;P<0.001)and aspartate aminotransferase(MD:-11.44 U/L,95%CI:-17.23,-5.65;P<0.001).Semaglutide led to improved cardiometabolic outcomes, including decreased HgA1c(MD:-0.77%,95%CI:-1.18,-0.37;P<0.001)and weight loss(MD:-6.53 kg,95%CI:-11.21,-1.85;P=0.006),but increased the occurrence of GIrelated side effects(OR:3.72,95%CI:1.68,8.23;P=0.001).Overall risk of serious adverse events was similar compared to placebo(OR:1.40,95%CI:0.75,2.62;P<0.29).CONCLUSION Semaglutide is effective in the treatment of NAFLD while maintaining a well-tolerated safety profile.Future studies are required to evaluate its effects on fibrosis regression and different phases of NAFLD.Kai Zhu Rohan Kakkar Daljeet Chahal Eric M Yoshida Trana Hussaini 2023World Journal of Gastroenterology2023,29,37:2
5Superchiral near fields detect virus structure显示文摘Optical spectroscopy can be used to quickly characterise the structural properties of individual molecules. However,it cannot be applied to biological assemblies because light is generally blind to the spatial distribution of the component molecules. This insensitivity arises from the mismatch in length scales between the assemblies(a few tens of nm)and the wavelength of light required to excite chromophores(≥150 nm).Consequently, with conventional spectroscopy, ordered assemblies, such as the icosahedral capsids of viruses, appear to be indistinguishable isotropic spherical objects. This limits potential routes to rapid high-throughput portable detection appropriate for point-of-care diagnostics. Here,we demonstrate that chiral electromagnetic(EM)near fields, which have both enhanced chiral asymmetry(referred to as superchirality)and subwavelength spatial localisation(∼10 nm),can detect the icosahedral structure of virus capsids. Thus, they can detect both the presence and relative orientation of a bound virus capsid. To illustrate the potential uses of the exquisite structural sensitivity of subwavelength superchiral fields,we have used them to successfully detect virus particles in the complex milieu of blood serum.Tarun Kakkar Chantal Keijzer Marion Rodier Tatyana Bukharova Michael Taliansky Andrew J.Love Joel J.Milner Affar S.Karimullah Laurence D.Barron Nikolaj Gadegaard Adrian J.Lapthorn Malcolm Kadodwala 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:2
