| 15 | A physical interpretation of the Titius-Bode rule and its connection to the closed orbits of Bertrand's theorem显示文摘We consider the geometric Titius-Bode rule for the semimajor axes of planetary orbits. We derive an equivalent rule for the midpoints of the segments between consecutive orbits along the radial direction and we interpret it physically in terms of the work done in the gravitational field of the Sun by particles whose orbits are perturbed around each planetary orbit. On such energetic grounds, it is not surprising that some exoplanets in multiple-planet extrasolar systems obey the same relation. However,it is surprising that this simple interpretation of the Titius-Bode rule also reveals new properties of the bound closed orbits predicted by Bertrand's theorem, which has been known since 1873. | Dimitris M.Christodoulou Demosthenes Kazanas | 2017 | Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics2017,17,12: | 0 |
| 16 | Meta-analysis of electron cyclotron resonance absorption features detected in high-mass X-ray binaries显示文摘Using recent compilations of detailed X-ray observations and spectral models of exceptional quality, we record the electron cyclotron resonance absorption(ECRA) features that have been detected in 45 pulsating high-mass X-ray binaries(HMXBs) and ultraluminous X-ray(ULX) sources harboring neutron stars, although seven of these detections are still questionable and another 21 are single and/or not independently confirmed. From the comprehensive catalogs of Jaisawal & Naik and Staubert et al.and from several additional recent observations, we produce two lists of HMXB ECRA sources: a list of 17 sources in which multiple ECRA lines or single very low-energy lines are seen, in which we can reasonably assume that the lowest energy reveals the fundamental cyclotron level for each source;and a'contaminated' list of 38 sources including the 21 detections of single ECRA lines that may(not) be higherlevel harmonics. Both lists confirm a previous result that we have obtained independently by modeling the propeller lines of Magellanic HMXB pulsars: the surface dipolar magnetic fields B*of HMXB neutron stars are segregated around five distinct values with B*= 0.28 ± 0.08, 0.55 ± 0.11, 1.3 ± 0.37, 3.0 ± 0.68 and 7.9 ± 3.1, in units of TG. However, an explanation of this phenomenon is currently lacking. We have found no correlation between these B*values and the corresponding observed spin periods, spin period derivatives, orbital periods, maximum X-ray luminosities, neutron star masses or companion star masses. | Dimitris M. | 17 | A striking confluence between theory and observations of high-mass X-ray binary pulsars显示文摘We analyze the most powerful X-ray outbursts from neutron stars in eleven Magellanic high-mass X-ray binaries and three pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources. Most of the outbursts rise to L_(max) which is about the level of the Eddington luminosity, while the remaining more powerful outbursts also appear to recognize that limit when their emissions are assumed to be anisotropic and beamed toward our direction. We use the measurements of pulsar spin periods P_S and their derivatives P_S to calculate the X-ray luminosities L_p in their faintest accreting('propeller-line') states. In five cases with unknown P_S, we use the lowest observed X-ray luminosities, which only adds to the heterogeneity of the sample. Then we calculate the ratios L_p/L_(max) and we obtain an outstanding confluence of theory and observations from which we conclude that work done on both fronts is accurate and the results are trustworthy: sources known to reside on the lowest Magellanic propeller line are all located on/near that line, whereas other sources jump higher and reach higher-lying propeller lines. These jumps can be interpreted in only one way, higher-lying pulsars have stronger surface magnetic fields in agreement with previous empirical results in whichP_S and L_p values were not used. | Dimitris M.Christodoulou Silas G.T.Laycock Demosthenes Kazanas | 2018 | Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics2018,18,10: | 0 |
| 18 | The Great Pretenders Among the ULX Class显示文摘The recent discoveries of pulsed X-ray emission from three ultraluminous X-ray(ULX)sources have finally enabled us to recognize a subclass within the ULX class:the great pretenders, neutron stars(NSs) that appear to emit X-ray radiation at isotropic luminosities L^(39)X= 7 × 10 erg s^(-1)-1 × 10^(41) erg s^(-1) only because their emissions are strongly beamed toward our direction and our sight lines are offset by only a few degrees from their magnetic-dipole axes. The three known pretenders appear to be stronger emitters than the presumed black holes of the ULX class, such as Holmberg II& IX X-1,IC10 X-1 and NGC 300 X-1.For these three NSs,we have adopted a single reasonable assumption, that their brightest observed outbursts unfold at the Eddington rate, and we have calculated both their propeller states and their surface magnetic-field magnitudes. We find that the results are not at all different from those recently obtained for the Magellanic Be/X-ray pulsars:the three NSs reveal modest magnetic fields of about 0.3–0.4 TG and beamed propeller-line X-ray luminosities of ~10^(36)-10^(37) erg s^(-1),substantially below the Eddington limit. | Dimitris M. | 19 | Histone deacetylase inhibitors as a novel therapeutic approach for pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas显示文摘Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications(e.g.,acetylation and deacetylation),are strongly implicated in the carcinogenesis of various malignancies.During transcription, the expression and functionality of coding gene products are altered following the histone acetylation and deacetylation. These processes are regulated by histone acetyltransferases(HATs)and histone deacetylases(HDACs),respectively.HDAC inhibitors(HDACis)have been developed as promising therapeutic agents,to limit exposure to traditional and toxic chemotherapies and offer more alternatives for some specific malignant diseases with limited options.Mechanistically, these agents affect many intracellular pathways, including cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and differentiation, and their mechanism of action mainly depends on the type of cancer.Currently, five HDACis have been approved for the treatment of several hematological malignancies(e.g.,T-cell lymphoma subtypes and multiple myeloma);while, many of them are tested for further therapeutic indications in solid tumors(e.g.,colorectal,thyroid,breast,lung and pancreatic cancer).Herein,we review the literature and gather all available evidence, from in vitro and in vivo data to clinical trial results, that recognizes the antitumor activity of HDACis on pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas;and supports their clinical implementation in the treatment of these rare neuroendocrine tumors at metastatic setting. | ASPASIA MANTA SPYRIDON KAZANAS STEFANOS KARAMAROUDIS HELEN GOGAS DIMITRIOS C.ZIOGAS | 2022 | Oncology Research2022,30,5: | 0 |
| 20 | Flaring activity from quiescent states in neutron-star X-ray binaries显示文摘We examine systematically the observed X-ray luminosity jumps(or flares) from quiescent states in millisecond binary pulsars(MSBPs) and high-mass X-ray binary pulsars(HMXBPs). We rely on the published X-ray light curves of seven pulsars: four HMXBPs, two MSBPs and the ultraluminous X-ray pulsar M82 X-2. We discuss the physics of their flaring activities or lack thereof, paying special attention to their emission properties when they are found on the propeller line, inside the Corbet gap or near the light-cylinder barrier. We provide guiding principles for future interpretations of faint X-ray observations, as well as a method of constraining the propeller lines and the dipolar surface magnetic fields of pulsars using a variety of quiescent states. In the process, we clarify some disturbing inaccuracies that have made their way into the published literature. | Dimitris M.Christodoulou Silas G.T.Laycock Demosthenes Kazanas Ioannis Contopoulos | 2018 | Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics2018,18,11: | 0 |
