Stochastic structural model of rock and soil aggregates by continuum-based discrete element method显示文摘This paper first presents a stochastic structural model to describe the random geometrical features of rock and soil aggregates. The stochastic structural model uses mixture ratio, rock size and rock shape to construct the microstructures of aggregates, and introduces two types of structural elements (block element and jointed element) and three types of material elements (rock element, soil element, and weaker jointed element) for this microstructure. Then, continuum-based discrete element method is used to study the deformation and failure mechanism of rock and soil aggregate through a series of loading tests. It is found that the stress-strain curve of rock and soil aggregates is nonlinear, and the failure is usually initialized from weaker jointed elements. Finally, some factors such as mixture ratio, rock size and rock shape are studied in detail. The numerical results are in good agreement with in situ test. Therefore, current model is effective for simulating the mechanical behaviors of rock and soil aggregates. | WANG Yuannian1, ZHAO Manhong1, LI Shihai1 & J.G. Wang21. | 2 | Medaka fish stem cells and their applications显示文摘Stem cells are present in developing embryos and adult tissues of multicellular organisms. Owing to their unique features, stem cells provide excellent opportunities for experimental analyses of basic developmental processes such as pluripotency control and cell fate decision and for regenerative medicine by stem cell-based therapy. Stem cell cultures have been best studied in 3 vertebrate organisms. These are the mouse, human and a small laboratory fish called medaka. Specifically, medaka has given rise to the first embryonic stem (ES) cells besides the mouse, the first adult testis-derived male stem cells spermatogonia capable of test-tube sperm production, and most recently, even haploid ES cells capable of producing Holly, a semi-cloned fertile female medaka from a mosaic oocyte created by microinjecting a haploid ES cell nucleus directly into a normal oocyte. These breakthroughs make medaka a favoring vertebrate model for stem cell research, the topic of this review. | YI MeiSheng1, HONG Ni1, LI ZhenDong1, YAN Yan1,2, WANG DanKe1, ZHAO HaoBin1,3 & HONG YunHan1,4* 1Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore, 10 Kent Ridge Crescent, Singapore 119260, Singapore 2Division of Bioengineering, School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 637457, Singapore 3Hubei Key Laboratory of Genetic Regulation and Integrative Biology, School of Life Sciences, Huazhong Normal University, Wuhan 430079, China 4State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan 430072, China | 2010 | Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,4: | 10
Behavior of MgO·Al_2O_3 Based Inclusions in Alloy Steel During Refining Process显示文摘The transformation of MgO·Al2O3 based inclusions in alloy steel during refining has been studied by industrial trials.Besides Factsage software is used to study the formation and modification of spinel inclusions in alloy steel using calcium treatment during refining process. The results show that the transformation sequence of inclusions is:MgO·Al2O3→CaO-Al2O3-MgO complex inclusions→MgO·Al2O3,and under present experimental condition,in order to avoid forming MgO·Al2O3 inclusions the content of dissolved Ca in the molten steel has to reach 1×10-6.Also the results show that when more calcium was added to molten steel, the content of Al2O3 and MgO will be lower.Besides, increasing the content of CaO in the inclusions will increase even if the content of SiO2 changes little. | YANG Shu-feng LI Jing-she ZHANG Li-feng Kent Peaslee WANG Zai-fei | 2010 | Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2010,17,7: | 5
Optimization of micropatterned poly(lactic-coglycolic acid) films for enhancing dorsal root ganglion cell orientation and extension显示文摘Nerve conduits have been a viable alternative to the ‘gold standard' autograft for treating small peripheral nerve gap injuries. However, they often produce inadequate functional recovery outcomes and are ineffective in large gap injuries. Ridge/groove surface micropatterning has been shown to promote neural cell orientation and guide growth. However, optimization of the ratio of ridge/groove parameters to promote orientation and extension for dorsal root ganglion(DRG) cells on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA) films has not been previously conducted. Photolithography and micro-molding were used to define various combinations of ridge/groove dimensions on PLGA films. The DRG cells obtained from chicken embryos were cultured on micropatterned PLGA films for cell orientation and migration evaluation. Biodegradation of the films occurred during the test period, however, this did not cause deformation or distortion of the micropatterns. Results from the DRG cell orientation test suggest that when the ridge/groove ratio equals 1(ridge/groove width parameters are equal, i.e., 10 μm/10 μm(even)), the degree of alignment depends on the size of the ridges and grooves, when the ratio is smaller than 1(groove controlled) the alignment increases as the ridge size decreases, and when the ratio is larger than 1(ridge controlled), the alignment is reduced as the width of the grooves decreases. The migration rate and neurite extension of DRG neurons were greatest on 10 μm/10 μm and 30 μm/30 μm micropatterned PLGA films. Based on the data, the 10 μm/10 μm and 30 μm/30 μm micropatterned PLGA films are the optimized ridge/groove surface patterns for the construction of nerve repair devices. | Ching-Wen Li Brett Davis Jill Shea Himanshu Sant Bruce Kent Gale Jayant Agarwal | 2018 | Neural Regeneration Research2018,13,1: | 5
Formation, Structure and Properties of Bulk Metallic Glasses显示文摘Bulk metallic glasses with up to 72 mm critical section thickness have been obtained by conventional casting techniques and the properties of these materials, particularly the mechanical and magnetic properties have been studied. These materials have been demonstrated to have novel properties which are fundamentally different from their crystalline counterparts. The recent status of research and development in formation, structure and properties of bulk metallic glasses is reviewed. The techniques to produce such bulk glasses are summarized and the glass forming ability and the critical cooling rate of these materials are discussed. Further consideration of the development and application of this new class of materiaIs will be proposed. | Y. | 7 | Ethylenediurea(EDU) pretreatment alleviated the adverse effects of elevated O3 on Populus alba 'Berolinensis' in an urban area显示文摘Ethylenediurea(EDU)has been used as a chemical protectant against ozone(O3).However,its protective effect and physiological mechanisms are still uncertain. The present study aimed to investigate the changes of foliar visible injury, physiological characteristics and emission rates of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)in one-year-old Populus alba'Berolinensis'saplings pretreated with EDU and exposed to elevated O3(EO,120μg/m3).The results showed that foliar visible injury symptoms under EO were significantly alleviated in plants with EDU application(p<0.05).Under EO,net photosynthetic rate, the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII and the photochemical efficiency of PSII of plants pretreated with 300 and600 mg/L EDU were similar to unexposed controls and significantly higher compared to EOstressed plants without EDU pretreatment, respectively.Malondialdehyde content was highest in EO without EDU and decreased significantly by 14.9%and 21.3%with 300 and600 mg/L EDU pretreatment,respectively.EDU pretreatment alone increased superoxide dismutase activity by 10-fold in unexposed plants with further increases of 88.4%and 37.5%in EO plants pretreated with 300 and 600 mg/L EDU pretreatment,respectively(p<0.05).Abscisic acid content declined under EO relative to unexposed controls with the effect partially reversed by EDU pretreatments.Similarly,VOCs emission rate declined under EO relative to unexposed plants with a recovery of emission rate observed with 300 and 600 mg/L EDU pretreatment. These findings provided significant evidence that EDU exerted a beneficial effect and protection on the tested plants against O3 stress. | Sheng Xu Xingyuan He Kent Burkey Wei Chen Pin Li Yan Li Bo Li Yijing Wang | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,10: | 4
| 8 | Experimental and discrete element numerical analysis of side slope instability induced by fissure water underlying impervious bed显示文摘When the sliding mass contains impervious bed, rainfall can infiltrate into mountain via crevices and form higher artesian aquifer at impervious bed inferior. This will decrease slip resistance and increase sliding forces of the sliding mass, thus lowering the safety factor, and inducing landslide disasters. In this paper, a landslide experimental apparatus is designed for experimental studies on the mechanism of this type of landslides. Meanwhile, the non-dimensional parameters in the model experiment are taken into account using dimensional analysis. The experimental results show that (1) the ratio of the cleft water pressure to the overlying pressure is a crucial parameter affecting the stability of the slope; (2) when the shut-in pressure reaches 80% of the normal component of the pressure on the slip surface made up of rock and soil, landslide will occur; (3) the whole slope will start to slide when the shut-in pressure is equal to the normal component of the pressure formed by the overlying rock and soil on the upper 30% area. In this article, a discrete element method simulation is used to investigate the influence of cleft water pressure and shearing strength on the landslide stability. It can be concluded that the critical value of Ccr, ?cr, which determines the slide mass stability, increases with the increase of the water pressure; if the water pressure reaches a high level, the stability of the slide mass depends mainly on C, while the influence of ? becomes smaller than C. | LIU Bingshan1, LI Shihai1, ZHANG Lei1,2 & WANG Jianguo31.
