| 7 | Effectiveness of tertiary treatment processes in removing different classes of emerging contaminants from domestic wastewater显示文摘In this work,38 different organic emerging contaminants(ECs),belonging to various chemical classes such as pharmaceuticals(PhCs),endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs),benzotriazoles(BTRs),benzothiazoles(BTHs),and perfluorinated compounds(PFCs),were initially identified and quantified in the biologically treated wastewater collected from Athens’(Greece)Sewage Treatment Plant(STP).Processes already used in existing STPs such as microfiltration(MF),nanofiltration(NF),ultrafiltration(UF),UV radiation,and powdered activated carbon(PAC)were assessed for ECs’removal,under the conditions that represent their actual application for disinfection or advanced wastewater treatment.The results indicated that MF removed only one out of the 38 ECs and hence it was selected as pretreatment step for the other processes.UV radiation in the studied conditions showed low to moderate removal for 5 out of the 38 ECs.NF showed better results than UF due to the smaller pore sizes of the filtration system.However,this enhancement was observed mainly for 8 compounds originating from the classes of PhCs and PFCs,while the removal of EDCs was not statistically significant.Among the various studied technologies,PAC stands out due to its capability to sufficiently remove most ECs.In particular,removal rates higher than 70%were observed for 9 compounds,22 were partially removed,while 7 demonstrated low removal rates.Based on our screening experiments,future research should focus on scaling-up PAC in actual conditions,combining PAC with other processes,and conduct a complete economic and environmental assessment of the treatment. | Olga S.Arvaniti Marilena E.Dasenaki Alexandros G.Asimakopoulos Niki C.Maragou Vasilios G.Samaras Korina Antoniou Georgia Gatidou Daniel Mamais Constantinos Noutsopoulos Zacharias Frontistis Nikolaos S.Thomaidis Athanasios S.Stasinakis | 2022 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,11: | 0 |
| 8 | Functional diversity in an Andean subparamo affected by wildfire in Colombia显示文摘Recently,the Andean subparamo in Colombia has experienced severe wildfires,but little is known about the functional composition of recovering or not after a wildfire.Therefore,we examined the functional community composition subparamo affected byfire in 2016.We documented how functional traits changed 31 months after the disturbance and compared them with an unburned site.We sampled from one to two years after the fire every four months,then registered all recruits in 1655m plots.New individuals were classified into strategy functional groups based on the traits of persistence and dispersal.The first group was stem type and regeneration mechanism(seedling and resprout),and the second was fruit type and dispersal mode.We investigated the degree to which functional diversity changes plant communities over time(woody and non-woody),and we compared it with an unburned site.The most relevant results showed that resprouts and seed regenerated increased post-fire time and significant differences between sampling periods.The anemochory is the most relevant dispersal mode that indicates the community capacity to colonize the new gaps opened by the fire rapidly.We discuss how wildfire appears to be a triggering factor for persistence and dispersal strategy groups in subparamo burned given their characteristics of tolerance to stress.For this reason,a greater functional divergence between the ecosystems studied post-fire recovery has been related to higher levels of biodiversity at the landscape scale due to the high degree of endemism and significant differences in species composition between paramos. | Korina Ocampo-Zuleta Angela Parrado-Rosselli | 2023 | Plant Diversity2023,45,4: | 0 |
