| 1 | Assessment of source water contamination by estrogenic disrupting compounds in China显示文摘Detection of estrogenic disrupting compounds(EDCs) in drinking waters around China has led to rising concerns about health risks associated with these compounds.There is,however,a paucity of studies on the occurrence and identification of the main compounds responsible for this pollution in the source waters.To fill this void,we screened estrogenic activities of 23 source water samples from six main river systems in China,using a recombinant two-hybrid yeast assay.All sample extracts induced significant estrogenic activity,with E2 equivalents(EEQ) of raw water ranging from 0.08 to 2.40 ng/L.Additionally,16 samples were selected for chemical analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.The EDCs of most concern,including estrone(E1),17β-estradiol(E2),17α-ethinylestradiol(EE2),estriol(E3),diethylstilbestrol(DES),estradiol valerate(EV),4-t-octylphenol(4-t-OP),4-nonylphenols(4-NP) and bisphenol A(BPA),were determined at concentrations of up to 2.98,1.07,2.67,4.37,2.52,1.96,89.52,280.19 and 710.65 ng/L,respectively.Causality analysis,involving comparison of EEQ values from yeast assay and chemical analysis identified E2,EE2 and 4-NP as the main responsible compounds,accounting for the whole estrogenic activities(39.74% to 96.68%).The proposed approach using both chemical analysis and yeast assay could be used for the identification and evaluation of EDCs in source waters of China. | Weiwei Jiang YeYan Mei Ma Donghong Wang Qian Luo Zijian Wang Senthil Kumaran Satyanarayanan | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,2: | 29 |

| 3 | Retinoid X receptor activities of source waters in China and their removal efficiencies during drinking water treatment processes显示文摘There is increasing evidence of estrogenic activities of source waters and drinking waters in China based on estrogen receptors(ERs) testing.However,relating such activities to retinoid X receptors(RXRs) in both drinking and source waters are lacking.To rectify this situation,we assessed 23 source water samples from six major river systems in China.We also collected samples at various stages of water processing from three drinking water treatment plants(DWTPs) using a two-hybrid RXR yeast assay with and without metabolism.No RXR agonistic activity was observed,but significant antagonistic activity was detected in all sample extracts.The RXR antagonistic activities of source water sample extracts ranged from 15.2% to 57.8% without metabolism and 11.5% to 68.3% with metabolism,respectively.In the drinking water treatment processes,RXR antagonistic activities without metabolism and with metabolism of up to 31.4% and 37.5% were removed,respectively.Nevertheless,the remaining RXR antagonists in treated drinking water from these source waters could still be harmful to human health.To the best of our knowledge,the occurrence of in vitro RXR disruption activities in source and drinking water has not been previously reported in China.Therefore,an attempt was made to conduct detailed studies investigating RXR disrupting activities and their possible risks in source and drinking water. | JIANG WeiWei YAN Ye LI Na MA Mei WANG DongHong RAO KaiFeng WANG ZiJian SATYANARAYANAN Senthi Kumaran | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,6: | 5 |

| 5 | PID Controller Tuning for a Multivariable Glass Furnace Process by Genetic Algorithm显示文摘Standard genetic algorithms(SGAs) are investigated to optimise discrete-time proportional-integral-derivative(PID) controller parameters, by three tuning approaches, for a multivariable glass furnace process with loop interaction. Initially, standard genetic algorithms(SGAs) are used to identify control oriented models of the plant which are subsequently used for controller optimisation. An individual tuning approach without loop interaction is considered first to categorise the genetic operators, cost functions and improve searching boundaries to attain the desired performance criteria. The second tuning approach considers controller parameters optimisation with loop interaction and individual cost functions. While, the third tuning approach utilises a modified cost function which includes the total effect of both controlled variables, glass temperature and excess oxygen. | 6 | Antibacterial potential of sponge endosymbiont marine Enterobacter sp at Kavaratti Island,Lakshadweep archipelago显示文摘Objective:To isolate antibacterial potential of sponge endosymbiotic bacteria from marine sponges at Lakshadweep archipelago.Also to identify the potent bacteria by 16s rDNA sequencing and determine the antibacterial activity against clinical pathogens by MIC.Methods: Sponge samples was collected from sub-tidal habitats at Kavaratti Island and identified.The endosymbiotic bacteria were isolated and selected potential bacteria which show antibacterial activity in preliminary screening against clinical pathogens Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus), Escherichia coli(E.coli),Salmonella typhi(S.typhi),Klebsiella pneumoniea(K.pneumoniea) and Streptococcus sp.by disc diffusion assay.The crude extracts of potential bacteria LB3 was tested against clinical pathogens by MIC.The LB3 strain was identified by 16s rDNA sequencing, 1111 bp was submitted in NCBI(HQ589912) and constructed phylogenetic tree.Results:Sponge sample was identified as Dysidea granulosa(D.granulosa) and potential bacteria LB3 identified as Enterobacter sp TTAG.Preliminary screening of sponge isolates against clinical pathogens,LB3 strain was selected as potential producer of secondary metabolites and crude extract was implies on MIC of LB3 have confirmed with lowest concentration of 5.0 mg/mL in broth medium influence of crude extract on growth inhibitory activity after 5 h of incubation period and completed the inhibitory activity at 15 h.Conclusions:The present study concluded that phylogenetic analysis of endosymbiotic bacteria Enterobacter sp from sponge D.granulosa of Lakshadweep islands showed significant antibacterial activity against clinical bacterial pathogens. | Mohan Gopi Subramanian Kumaran Thipparamalai Thangappanpillai Ajith Kumar Balaraman Deivasigamani Kumarappan Alagappan Srinivasan Guru Prasad | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,2: | 2 |

| 12 | Antibiotic resistant Esherichia coli strains from seafood and its susceptibility to seaweed extracts显示文摘Objective:To determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli(E. coli),in seafood obtained from Cuddalore and Parangipettai fish landing centres.Also,to identify the susceptibility of E.coli against predominant seaweeds red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii(K.alvarezii) and brown alga Padina boergessenii(P.boergessenii) extracts as sulfated polysaccharides and polyphenols respectively.Methods:A total of 48 samples(Two stations Cuddalore and Parangipettai,Tamil Nadu,India).Sampling area are fish landing centre where fishes caught from sea and estuary,seafood processing plants(packing and ice packed fishes) and local fish markets(fish samples).After isolation totally 80 strains were analyzed for its antimicrobial resistance and sensitivity against commercially 10 antibiotics.The ampicillin resistant E.coli CE21 was identified through molecular techniques as I6S rDNA sequencing. Two seaweeds K.alvarezii and P.boergessenii were screened lor antibacterial activity against 12 antibiotic resistant E.coli strains.Results:Totally 48 swabbed samples from two different fish handling area were characterized for total bacterial and E.coli count.Mostly,the E.coli strains were isolated from fish local market and seafood processing plants before and after packaging process.In that maximum 56.25%strains were resistant to ampicillin and the minimum 2.5%strains were resistant to chloramphenicol.Therefore,the E.coli CE21 was identified through molecular techniques E.coli(GenBank accession number GU065251),The MIC value for polyphenol extract was slightly less than sulfated polysaccharides.E.coli strain isolated from Parangipettai was considerably increased MIC value that Cuddalore.Conclusions: The polyphenol and sulfated polysaccharides showed promising inhibitory response against all antimicrobial resistant E.coli strains and in particular the inhibitory response of ampicillin resistant E.coli. | Subramanian Kumaran Balaraman Deivasiganiani Kumarappan Alagappan Mannikam Sakthivel Rajamani Karthikeyan | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,12: | 1 |
