| 3 | A MEMS ultrasound stimulation system for modulation of neural circuits with high spatial resolution in vitro显示文摘Neuromodulation by ultrasound has recently received attention due to its noninvasive stimulation capability for treating brain diseases.Although there have been several studies related to ultrasonic neuromodulation,these studies have suffered from poor spatial resolution of the ultrasound and low repeatability with a fixed condition caused by conventional and commercialized ultrasound transducers.In addition,the underlying physics and mechanisms of ultrasonic neuromodulation are still unknown.To determine these mechanisms and accurately modulate neural circuits,researchers must have a precisely controllable ultrasound transducer to conduct experiments at the cellular level.Herein,we introduce a new MEMS ultrasound stimulation system for modulating neurons or brain slices with high spatial resolution.The piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers(pMUTs)with small membranes(submm membranes)generate enough power to stimulate neurons and enable precise modulation of neural circuits.We designed the ultrasound transducer as an array structure to enable localized modulation in the target region.In addition,we integrated a cell culture chamber with the system to make it compatible with conventional cell-based experiments,such as in vitro cell cultures and brain slices.In this work,we successfully demonstrated the functionality of the system by showing that the number of responding cells is proportional to the acoustic intensity of the applied ultrasound.We also demonstrated localized stimulation capability with high spatial resolution by conducting experiments in which cocultured cells responded only around a working transducer. | Jungpyo Lee Kyungmin Ko Hyogeun Shin Soo-Jin Oh CJustin Lee Namsun Chou Nakwon Choi Min Tack Oh Byung Chul Lee Seong Chan Jun Il-Joo Cho | 2019 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2019,5,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Simultaneous emission of orthogonal handedness in circular polarization from a single luminophore显示文摘The direct emission of circularly polarized(CP)light improves the efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode and characterizes the secondary structure of proteins.In most cases,CP light is generated from a luminescent layer containing chiral characteristics,thereby generating only one kind of CP light in an entire device.Here,we propose direct CP light emissions using a twisted achiral conjugate polymer without any chiral dopant as an emitting layer(EML).The twisted structure is induced in the mesogenic conjugate polymer due to its elasticity by applying different alignment directions to its upper and lower interfaces.Furthermore,we demonstrate the simultaneous emission of orthogonal CP light in a single luminescent device by patterning different alignment directions on the surfaces of the EML.The light source with multipolarization including the orthogonal CP states is applicable to many applications in biosensors and optical devices. | Kyungmin Baek Dong-Myung Lee Yu-Jin Lee Hyunchul Choi Jeongdae Seo Inbyeong Kang Chang-Jae Yu Jae-Hoon Kim | 2019 | Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1: | 3 |

| 20 | Handheld endomicroscope using a fiber-optic harmonograph enables real-time and in vivo confocal imaging of living cell morphology and capillary perfusion显示文摘Confocal laser endomicroscopy provides high potential for noninvasive and in vivo optical biopsy at the cellular level.Here,we report a fully packaged handheld confocal endomicroscopic system for real-time,high-resolution,and in vivo cellular imaging using a Lissajous scanning fiber-optic harmonograph.The endomicroscopic system features an endomicroscopic probe with a fiber-optic harmonograph,a confocal microscope unit,and an image signal processor.The fiber-optic harmonograph contains a single mode fiber coupled with a quadrupole piezoelectric tube,which resonantly scans both axes at~1 kHz to obtain a Lissajous pattern.The fiber-optic harmonograph was fully packaged into an endomicroscopic probe with an objective lens.The endomicroscopic probe was hygienically packaged for waterproofing and disinfection of medical instruments within a 2.6-mm outer diameter stainless tube capable of being inserted through the working channel of a clinical endoscope.The probe was further combined with the confocal microscope unit for indocyanine green imaging and the image signal processor for high frame rate and high density Lissajous scanning.The signal processing unit delivers driving signals for probe actuation and reconstructs confocal images using the auto phase matching process of Lissajous fiber scanners.The confocal endomicroscopic system was used to successfully obtain human in vitro fluorescent images and real-time ex vivo and in vivo fluorescent images of the living cell morphology and capillary perfusion inside a single mouse. | Kyungmin Hwang Yeong-Hyeon Seo Daniel YKim Jinhyo Ahn Soyoung Lee Kyung Hee Han Koun-Hee Lee Sangyong Jon Pilhan Kim Kate EYu Hyungsin Kim Shin-Hyuk Kang Ki-Hun Jeong | 2020 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1: | 0 |
