1Contributions of biofilm and suspended sludge to nitrogen transformation and nitrous oxide emission in hybrid sequencing batch system显示文摘Hybrid system combines the nature of suspended growth and attached growth has been widely applied to wastewater treatment.In this research, the contributions to N transformation and N2O emission by biofilm and suspended sludge in the hybrid sequencing-batch reactor for a simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal process were investigated. For the hybrid system,nitrification occurred mostly in the suspended sludge, while the biofilm played the major role in denitrification. The interaction ofthe biofilm and the suspended sludge in the same reactor resulted in a better overall nitrogen removal performance with simultaneousnitrification and denitrification. However, N2O emission was the main end product of nitrogen removal for the hybrid system; whileit was N2 for the biofilm. 8A Dynamic Forecasting System with Applications in Production Logistics显示文摘Production logistics involve the co-ordination of ac tivities such as production and materials control (PMC), inventory management, p roduct life cycle management, etc. Those activities demand for an accurate forec asting model. However, the conventional methods of making sell and buy decision based on human forecast or conventional moving average and exponential smoothing methods is no longer be sufficient to meet the future need. Furthermore, the un derlying statistics of the market information change from time to time due to a number of reasons such as change of global economic environment, government poli cies and business risks. This demands for highly adaptive forecasting model which is robust enough to response and adapt well to the fast changes in the dat a characteristics, in other words, the trajectory of the 'dynamic characteristic s' of the data. In this paper, an adaptive time-series modelling method was proposed for short -term dynamic forecasting. The method employs an autoregressive (AR) time-seri es model to carry out the forecasting process. A modified least mean square (MLM S) adaptive filter algorithm was established for adjusting the AR model coeffici ents so as to minimise the sum of squared of forecasting errors. A prototype dyn amic forecasting system was built based on the adaptive time-series modelling m ethod. Basically, the dynamic forecasting system can be divided into two phases, i.e. the Learning Phase and the Application Phase. The learning procedures star t with the determination of upper limit of the adaptation gain based on the conv ergence in the mean square criterion. Hence, the optimum ELMS filter parameters are determined using an iteration algorithm which changes each filter parameter i.e. the order, the adaptation gain andthe values initial coefficient vector on e by one inside a predetermined iteration range. The set of parameters which giv es the minimum value for sum of squared errors within the iteration range is sel ected as the optimum set of filter parameters. In the Application Phase, the sys tem is operated under a real-time environment. The sampled data is processed by the optimised ELMS filter and the forecasted data are calculated based on the a daptive time-series model. The error of forecasting is continuously monitored w ithin the predefined tolerance. When the system detects excessive forecasting er ror, a feedback alarm signal was issued for system re-calibration. Experimental results indicated that the convergence rate and sum of squared erro rs during initial adaptation could be significantly improved using the MLMS algorithm. The performance of the system was verified through a series of experi ments conducted on the forecast of materials demand and costing in productio n logistics. Satisfactory results were achieved with the forecast errors confini ng within in most instances. 9Exacerbated VEGF up-regulation accompanies diabetes-aggravated hemorrhage in mice after experimental cerebral ischemia and delayed reperfusion显示文摘Reperfusion therapy is the preferred treatment for ischemic stroke,but is hindered by its short treatment window,especially in patients with diabetes whose reperfusion after prolonged ischemia is often accompanied by exacerbated hemorrhage.The mechanisms underlying exacerbated hemorrhage are not fully understood.This study aimed to identify this mechanism by inducing prolonged 2-hour transient intraluminal middle cerebral artery occlusion in diabetic Ins2Akita/+mice to mimic patients with diabetes undergoing delayed mechanical thrombectomy.The results showed that at as early as 2 hours after reperfusion,Ins2Akita/+mice exhibited rapid development of neurological deficits,increased infarct and hemorrhagic transformation,together with exacerbated down-regulation of tight-junction protein ZO-1 and upregulation of blood-brain barrier-disrupting matrix metallopeptidase 2 and matrix metallopeptidase 9 when compared with normoglycemic Ins2+/+mice.This indicated that diabetes led to the rapid compromise of vessel integrity immediately after reperfusion,and consequently earlier death and further aggravation of hemorrhagic transformation 22 hours after reperfusion.This observation was associated with earlier and stronger up-regulation of pro-angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and its downstream phospho-Erk1/2 at 2 hours after reperfusion,which was suggestive of premature angiogenesis induced by early VEGF up-regulation,resulting in rapid vessel disintegration in diabetic stroke.Endoplasmic reticulum stress-related pro-apoptotic C/EBP homologous protein was overexpressed in challenged Ins2Akita/+mice,which suggests that the exacerbated VEGF up-regulation may be caused by overwhelming endoplasmic reticulum stress under diabetic conditions.In conclusion,the results mimicked complications in patients with diabetes undergoing delayed mechanical thrombectomy,and diabetes-induced accelerated VEGF up-regulation is likely to underlie exacerbated hemorrhagic transformation.Thus,suppression of the VEGF pathway could be a potential approach to allow reperfusion therapy in patients with diabetic stroke beyond the current treatment window.Experiments were approved by the Committee on the Use of Live Animals in Teaching and Research of the University of Hong Kong[CULATR 3834-15(approval date January 5,2016);3977-16(approval date April 13,2016);and 4666-18(approval date March 29,2018)].Angela Ka Wai Lai Tsz Chung Ng Victor Ka Lok Hung Ka Cheung Tam Chi Wai Cheung Sookja Kim Chung Amy Cheuk Yin Lo 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,7:0
