Validation of the diagnostic potential of mtDNA copy number derived from whole genome sequencing显示文摘Diagnosis of mitochondrial DNA(mt DNA)disorders has traditionally been focused on the presence of point mutations and large deletions. However, deviations in mitochondrial abundance or mt DNA copy number can also be associated with many physiological and pathological conditions(Bai and Wong,2005).For example, reduced mt DNA copy number could be a result of defective mt DNA biosynthesis or mt DNA replication and isRachel Brockhage Jesse Slone Zeqian Ma Madhuri R.Hegde C.AlexANDer Valencia Taosheng Huang 2018Journal of Genetics and Genomics2018,45,6:1

Hydrodynamics of a bubble-induced inverse fluidized bed reactor with a nanobubble tray显示文摘This paper reports on the hydrodynamics of a bubble-induced inverse fluidized bed reactor, using a nanobubble tray gas distributor, where solid particles are fluidized only by an upward gas flow.Increasing the gas velocity, the fixed layer of particles initially packed at the top of the liquid starts to move downwards, due to the rise of bubbles in this system, and then gradually expands downwards until fully suspended. The axial local pressure drops and standard deviation were examined to delineate the flow regime comprehensively under different superficial gas velocities.Four flow regimes(fixed bed regime, initial fluidization regime, expanded regime, and post-homogeneous regime)were observed and three transitional gas velocities(the initial fluidization velocity, minimum fluidization velocity, and homogeneous fluidization velocity)were identified to demarcate the flow regime.Three correlations were developed for the three transitional velocities. As the fine bubbles generated from the nanobubble tray gas distributor are well distributed in the entire column, the bed expansion process of the particles is relatively steady.Yicheng Deng Keying Ma Yuanyuan Shao Jesse Zhu 2023Particuology2023,,2:0
Hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular gas-driven inverse liquid-solid fluidized bed显示文摘The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular gas-driven inverse liquid-solid fluidized bed(GDFB)using particles of different diameters and densities were investigated in detail.Rising gas bubbles cause a liquid upflow in the riser portion, enabling a liquid downflow that causes an inverse fluidization in the downer portion.Four flow regimes(fixed bed regime, initial fluidization regime, complete fluidization regime, and circulating fluidization regime)and three transition gas velocities(initial fluidization gas velocity, minimum fluidization gas velocity, and circulating fluidization gas velocity)were identified via visual observation and by monitoring the variations in the pressure drop. The axial local bed voidage(e)of the downer first decreases and then increases with the increase of the gas velocity. Both the liquid circulation velocity and the average particle velocity inside the downer increase with the increase of the gas velocity in the riser, but decrease with the particle loading. An empirical formula was proposed to successfully predict the Richardson-Zaki index“n”,and the predicted e obtained from this formula has a±5%relative error when compared with the experimental e.Yicheng Deng Keying Ma jaqi Huang Yuanyuan Shao Jesse Zhu 2023Particuology2023,,7:0
Local solids flow structure in a countercurrent liquid-upward and solids-downward fluidized bed(CCLSFB)system显示文摘The local solids holdup and local particle velocity in a Countercurrent Liquid-upward and Solids-downward Fluidized Bed(CCLSFB)were investigated in details using optical fiber probes with two different models in a Plexiglas column of 1.5 m in height and 7.0 cm in inner diameter.A new flow regime map including fluidized bed, transition, and flooding regimes was established. The axial solids holdup distribution is almost uniform at low liquid velocity and/or solids flowrate and becomes less uniform with higher solids holdup at the top of the column after the operating liquid velocity is reaching the flooding velocity. The radial solids holdup profile is also nearly flat with a slightly lower solids holdup in the near-wall region at low liquid velocity and solids flowrate but becomes nonuniform as the operating liquid velocity approaches the flooding velocity. Two equations were also proposed to correlate radial local solids holdups. The descending particle velocity in CCLSFB increases with the decrease of the liquid velocity and the increase of the solids flowrate.A generally uniform particle velocity distribution was found in the axial direction,as well as in the radial direction except for a small decrease near the wall. These results on the local solids flow structure would provide basic information and theoretical supports for the design and industrial application of CCLSFB.Enming Zhang Keying Ma Yuanyuan Shao Jesse Zhu 2023Particuology2023,,5:0
A modified wake model in bubble-induced three-phase inverse fluidized bed(BIFB)显示文摘A modified wake model was proposed for the newly developed bubble-induced three-phase inverse fluidized bed(BIFB),by combining the generalized wake model and the gas-perturbed liquid model. On the basis of the modified wake model, the solids and liquid holdups and the complete fluidization gas velocity in BIFB system have been successfully predicted with two established correlations. The predictions achieved very good agreements with the experimental data.Keying Ma Xiliang Sun Yuanyuan Shao Jesse Zhu 2022Particuology2022,20,6:0
Decline in subarachnoid haemorrhage volumes associated with the first wave of the COVID- 19 pandemic显示文摘Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study’s objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH)hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional,retrospective,observational study across 6 continents,37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres.Patients with the diagnosis of SAH,aneurysmal SAH,ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases,10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before(1 year and immediately before)and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020.The prior 1-year control period(1 March-31 May 2019)was obtained to account for seasonal variation.Findings There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5%(95%CI−24.3%to−20.7%,p<0.0001).Embolisation of ruptured aneurysms declined with 1170-1035 procedures, respectively, representing an 11.5%(95%CI−13.5%to−9.8%,p=0.002)relative drop.Subgroup analysis was noted for aneurysmal SAH hospitalisation decline from 834 to 626 hospitalisations,a 24.9%relative decline(95%CI−28.0%to−22.1%,p<0.0001).A relative increase in ruptured aneurysm coiling was noted in low coiling volume hospitals of 41.1%(95%CI 32.3%to 50.6%,p=0.008)despite a decrease in SAH admissions in this tertile.Interpretation There was a relative decrease in the volume of SAH hospitalisations, aneurysmal SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm embolisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings in SAH are consistent with a decrease in other emergencies, such as stroke and myocardial infarction.Thanh N Nguyen Diogo C Haussen Muhammad M Qureshi Hiroshi Yamagami 9Characterization of countercurrent liquid-upward and solid-downward fluidized system显示文摘Acting as an operating mode of fluidization, the flow characteristics of a countercurrent liquid–solid fluidized bed(CCLSFB)were experimentally investigated using a Plexiglas column of 1.5 m in height.Countercurrent liquid-upward and solid-downward fluidization was achieved under a limited solid flowrate before flooding occurred. The“flooding”phenomena and the flooding velocity were identified by measuring the variations in pressure drop in the axial direction of the column. Two different methods were used to quantify the flooding point that led to the instability of the system.Axial solids holdup profiles were also obtained from the pressure drop data along the column and the influences of device structure and operating conditions on the solids holdup were also studied.Seven types of particles with different diameters and densities were used.An agreement was found between the experimental results and the mathematic prediction derived from the Richardson–Zaki equation on the data of the solids holdup.Enming Zhang Keying Ma Yuanyuan Shao Jesse Zhu Tian Nan 2022Particuology2022,,11:0
Contribution of high risk groups’unmet needs may be underestimated in epidemic models without risk turnover:A mechanistic modelling analysis显示文摘Background:Epidemic models of sexually transmitted infections(STIs)are often used to characterize the contribution of risk groups to overall transmission by projecting the transmission population attributable fraction(tPAF)of unmet prevention and treatment needs within risk groups. However, evidence suggests that STI risk is dynamic over an individual’s sexual life course, which manifests as turnover between risk groups. We sought to examine the mechanisms by which turnover influences modelled projections of the tPAF of high risk groups. Methods:We developed a unifying,data-guided framework to simulate risk group turnover in deterministic, compartmental transmission models. We applied the framework to an illustrative model of an STI and examined the mechanisms by which risk group turnover influenced equilibrium prevalence across risk groups. We then fit a model with and without turnover to the same risk-stratified STI prevalence targets and compared the inferred level of risk heterogeneity and tPAF of the highest risk group projected by the two models. Results:The influence of turnover on group-specific prevalence was mediated by three main phenomena:movement of previously high risk individuals with the infection into lower risk groups;changes to herd effect in the highest risk group;and changes in the number of partnerships where transmission can occur.Faster turnover led to a smaller ratio of STI prevalence between the highest and lowest risk groups.Compared to the fitted model without turnover, the fitted model with turnover inferred greater risk heterogeneity and consistently projected a larger tPAF of the highest risk group over time.Implications:If turnover is not captured in epidemic models, the projected contribution of high risk groups, and thus, the potential impact of prioritizing interventions to address their needs, could be underestimated. To aid the next generation of tPAF models, data collection efforts to parameterize risk group turnover should be prioritized.Jesse Knight Stefan D.Baral Sheree Schwartz Linwei Wang Huiting Ma Katherine Young Harry Hausler Sharmistha Mishra 2020Infectious Disease Modelling2020,5,1:0
