1Impact of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium on Brown Planthopper and Tolerance of Its Host Rice Plants显示文摘The brown planthopper(BPH),Nilaparvata lugens(St?l),appeared as a devastating pest of rice in Asia. Experiments were conducted to study the effects of three nutrients,nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P) and potassium(K),on BPH and its host rice plants. Biochemical constituents of BPH and rice plants with varying nutrient levels at different growth stages,and changes in relative water content(RWC) of rice plants were determined in the laboratory. Feeding of BPH and the tolerance of rice plants to BPH with different nutrient levels were determined in the nethouse. Concentrations of N and P were found much higher in the BPH body than in its host rice plants,and this elemental mismatch is an inherent constraint on meeting nutritional requirements of BPH. Nitrogen was found as a more limiting element for BPH than other nutrients in rice plants. Application of N fertilizers to the rice plants increased the N concentrations both in rice plants and BPH while application of P and K fertilizers increased their concentrations in plant tissues only but not in BPH. Nitrogen application also increased the level of soluble proteins and decreased silicon content in rice plants,which resulted in increased feeding of BPH with sharp reduction of RWC in rice plants ultimately caused susceptible to the pest. P fertilization increased the concentration of P in rice plant tissues but not changed N,K,Si,free sugar and soluble protein contents,which indicated little importance of P to the feeding of BPH and tolerance of plant against BPH. K fertilization increased K content but reduced N,Si,free sugar and soluble protein contents in the plant tissues which resulted in the minimum reduction of RWC in rice plants after BPH feeding,thereby contributed to higher tolerance of rice plants to brown planthopper.Md Mamunur RASHID Mahbuba JAHAN Khandakar Shariful ISLAM 2016Rice science2016,23,3:12
2Inhibition of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma by Manilkara zapota L.stem bark in Swiss albino mice显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antitumor activity of Manilkara zapota(M.zapota) L.stem bark against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC) in Swiss albino mice.Methods:The in vivo antitumour activity of the ethyl acetate extract of stem bark of M.zapota L.(EASM) was evaluated at 50,100 and 200 mg/kg bw against EAC using mean survival time.After administration of the extract of M.zapota,viable EAC cell count and body weight in the EAC tumour hosts were observed.The animal was also observed for improvement in the haematological parameters(e.g.,heamoglobin content,red and white blood cells count and differential cell count) after EASM treatment. 3Spatial and seasonal distribution of intertidal macrobenthos with their biomass and functional feeding guilds in the Naf River estuary, Bangladesh显示文摘The Naf River estuary is one of the most productive ecological ecosystems in Bangladesh providing an important feeding area for fishes and other aquatic animals.However,detailed information on macrobenthic communities is rarely available in this area.Our study focused on the seasonal and spatial variability of macrobenthic community structure with their biomass and functional guilds.In total,fortyseven taxa were identified under nine major groups and seven functional feeding guilds.Among macrobenthic taxa,Polychaeta was dominant in both seasons and all over the estuary contributing 60%of total benthos.The mean abundance of macrobenthos was higher during the pre-monsoon(2 972±1 994 inds./m^2)than the monsoon(1 572±361 inds./m^2)being maximum at mid-estuary region and minimum at upper and lower estuary regions.Of the diversity indices,density(P=0.01,P=0.003),the number of taxa(P=0.000 3,P=0.000 9)and Margalef′s Index(P=0.000 4,P=0.001)of macrobenthos were significantly different among stations and seasons.Shannon-Weiner index(P=0.009,P=0.12)and Pielou’s evenness index(P=0.03,P=0.14)had significant differences among stations but not among seasons.Cluster analysis suggested that distribution of macrofauna is strongly influenced by seasonality.Among the feeding types,carnivorous were found to be dominant at the upper and mid-estuarine regions,and herbivorous were at lower estuarine regions.Carnivorous species were dominant in both seasons.Omnivores have shown to be the most abundant feeding type in terms of biomass though herbivores were highest during monsoon.Md. 4Comparative investigation of the free radical scavenging potential and anticancer property of Diospyros blancoi(Ebenaceae)显示文摘Objective: To investigate the comparative effects of Diospyros blancoi(Ebenaceae)leaves(DBL), root bark(DBRB) and stem bark(DBSB) on free radicals and cancer.Methods: The polyphenol contents, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties were determined using standard spectrophotometric methods. Cytotoxicity and anticancer activities were performed on brine shrimp nauplii and Ehrlich ascite carcinoma cells, respectively.Results: Among the extracts, DBSB showed the highest total antioxidant capacity and reducing capacity on ferrous ion. Based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, DBSB showed(95.760 ± 0.343)% and(67.460 ± 2.641)%scavenging with IC50of(3.10 ± 0.17) and(50.00 ± 3.11) mg/m L, respectively. The IC50 values of standard butylated hydroxytoluene and catechin(CA) for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radicals were(8.50 ± 0.25) and(75.00 ± 0.14) mg/m L,respectively suggesting that DBSB had a significant(P < 0.05) radical scavenging activity than standards. In lipid peroxidation inhibition assay, the inhibitory activity of the extracts and the standard was in the following order: DBSB > DBRB > CA > DBL.Also, the phenolic [(139.91 ± 3.924) mg gallic acid equivalent/g] and flavonoid contents[(412.00 ± 16.70) mg catechin equivalent/g)] of DBSB were higher than that of other extracts. 14Systematic mutational analysis of epitope-grafted ED3 immunogenicity reveals a DENV3-DENV4 bi-serospecific ED3 mutant显示文摘Objective:To identify the residue determinants of the serospecificity and sero-cross-reactivity of dengue virus(DENV)envelope protein domain 3(ED3),which contains two major putative epitopes of DENV.Methods:We constructed ED3 from DENV3(3ED3)and DENV4(4ED3),and six epitope-grafted variants,where we transferred epitope 1(L304I,K305D,V309M,and S310A)and/or epitope 2(D383N,K384S,K387T,and N389H)of 4ED3 onto 3ED3 and vice-versa.Swiss albino mice aged 3-4 weeks were immunized against wildtype and epitope-grafted ED3 variants and anti-ED3 IgG antibody responses were determined using ELISA.Results:Mouse immunization using 3ED3 and 4ED3 generated serotype-specific antisera,as expected.Similarly,most epitope-grafted ED3s produced antisera serospecific to the template ED3 with little or no cross-recognition of ED3 of the serotype from which the epitopes were taken.These indicated that a mere grafting of the epitope was not sufficient to transfer serospecificity,contrary to our expectations.However,one epitope-grafted ED3 mutant,where epitope 1 of 3ED3 was grafted onto 4ED3(4ED3^(epi1)),generated antisera that was serospecific to both 4ED3 and 3ED3.Conclusions:The 4ED3^(epi1)is a chimeric ED3 that produces antisera possessing serospecificity to both 3ED3 and 4ED3 onto a common 4ED3 scaffold.The 4ED3^(epi1),therefore,provides a unique tool for analyzing serospecificity and sero-cross-reactivity in dengue.We believe that chimeric ED3 may provide a template for future recombinant ED3 possessing serospecificity of multiple DENVs onto a single scaffold and may pave a way developing tri-and/or tetravalent anti-DENV antisera.Mamtaz Sultana Nazmul Hasan Mamunur R.Mahib Mohammad M.Islam 2022Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2022,15,2:0
15Rice plant growth and yield: foliar application of plasma activated water显示文摘Plasma activated water(PAW)was prepared for 10 min to be applied one tofive times as a foliar spray to rice plants,to investigate plant growth,yield and the concentrations of total soluble protein and sugar in the rice grains produced.The results reveal that(1)the plant height,stem diameter,dry weight,chlorophyll and total carotene concentrations were improved by∼15%,∼25%,∼24%,∼47%and∼45%,respectively,with respect to control,(2)defense mechanisms of the plants treated with PAW were improved,(3)concentrations of total soluble protein and sugar were enhanced in the rice grains of PAW treated plants and(4)yield was increased by∼14%.M M RASHID Mamunur RASHID M M HASAN M R TALUKDER 2021Plasma Science and Technology2021,23,7:0
16Jaundice in pediatric visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) patients显示文摘Objective:Visceral leishmaniasis(Kala-azar) is endemic in many countries including Bangladesh.Clinical presentation of visceral leishmaniasis in children and adult may vary and at time may simulate many tropical and hepatobiliary diseases.Jaundice and ascites are not common in kala-azar patients.Methods:During the period of January 2005 to December 2006,all the records of the confirmed kala-azar patients presented with jaundice were included in this study.Kala-azar was confirmed by serology test ICT(Immuno Chromatography) and Bone Marrow study.Results:Total 12 kala-azar patients were encountered during this period.Among these twelve cases,presenting features were jaundice(7),splenomegaly(12),hepatomegaly(11) and ascites (4).Initial clinical diagnosis of chronic liver disease(CLD) was made in(5),Congenital hemolytic anaemia in(1) and kala-azar in rest of the patients(6 ).Common leucopenia and relative lymphocytosis was not observed in any patients.Conclusion:Kala-azar may present with various clinical manifestation in children and adult.Jaundice can be considered to be a common manifestation particularly in pediatric kala-azar patients.Otherwise,it may mislead to another diagnosis if it is taken as a rare feature in kala-azar.AKM Mamunur Rashid Md.Asrafuzzaman Abdullah Al Mamun Abdullah Al Mahboob 2009Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2009,2,2:0
