Ecological connectivity in fragmented agricultural landscapes and the importance of scattered trees and small patches显示文摘Background:Fragmentation and habitat loss can restrict species movement and reduce connectivity, negatively impacting biodiversity.Characterising the overall connectivity of an area can inform better management of human modified landscapes.Contemporary connectivity modelling methods seldom incorporate fine-scale movement patterns associated with movement between fine-scaled structural connectivity elements such as scattered trees, roadside corridors and small patches of habitat. This study aims to characterise connectivity within the Karuah-Myall catchments,a typical woodland ecosystem that is fragmented by agriculture, using least-cost path analysis and a graph-theoretic approach;it focuses on how fine-scaled vegetation such as scattered trees support connectivity. We mapped scattered(and paddock)trees within this agricultural landscape where the main human modified land use was pasture. We modelled connectivity for a general representative woodland species using an interpatch dispersal distance and gap crossing threshold, and resistance from different land cover types. The gap crossing distance threshold was used to model movement between fine-scaled vegetation features. We compared the least-cost paths modelled with and without scattered trees. Results:Our results show that by excluding scattered trees,least-cost paths across the cleared pasture landscape did not reflect the types of movement patterns typically observed from field studies, such as those associated with a foray-search strategy used by small and medium mammals and birds. The modelling also shows that the KaruahMyall catchments are well connected and provide value to biodiversity beyond the catchment borders,by connecting coastal vegetation to the Great Eastern Ranges national wildlife corridor initiative. Conclusion:Connectivity models that exclude fine-scale landscape features such as scattered trees and small, linear patches risk misrepresenting connectivity patterns.Models of regional-scale connectivity can be influenced by the presence or absence of even the smallest features, such as scattered trees.Darrel Chin Fung Tiang Andrew Morris Mathew Bell Christopher NGibbins Badrul Azhar Alex MLechner 2021Ecological Processes2021,10,1:1
Threshold logic based low-level vision sparse object features显示文摘Purpose-The real-time generation of feature descriptors for object recognition is a challenging problem. In this research, the purpose of this paper is to provide a hardware friendly framework to generate sparse features that can be useful for key feature point selection, feature extraction, and descriptor construction. The inspiration is drawn from feature formation processes of the human brain, taking into account the sparse, modular, and hierarchical processing of visual information.Design/methodology/approach-A sparse set of neurons referred as active neurons determines the feature points necessary for high-level vision applications such as object recognition.A psycho-physical mechanism of human low-level vision relates edge detection to noticeable local spatial stimuli, representing this set of active neurons.A cognitive memory cell array-based implementation of low-level vision is proposed.Applications of memory cell in edge detection are used for realizing human vision inspired feature selection and leading to feature vector construction for high-level vision applications.Findings-True parallel architecture and faster response of cognitive circuits avoid time costly and redundant feature extraction steps.Validation of proposed feature vector toward high-level computer vision applications is demonstrated using standard object recognition databases. The comparison against existing state-of-the-art object recognition features and methods shows an accuracy of 97,95,69 percent for Columbia Object Image Library-100,ALOI,and PASCAL VOC 2007 databases indicating an increase from benchmark methods by 5,3 and 10 percent,respectively.Originality/value-A hardware friendly low-level sparse edge feature processing system isproposed for recognizing objects. The edge features are developed based on threshold logic of neurons, and the sparse selection of the features applies a modular and hierarchical processing inspired from the human neural system.Nitha Thomas Joshin John Mathew Alex James 2016International Journal of Intelligent Computing and Cybernetics2016,9,4:0
Human-Centered A.I. and Security Primitives显示文摘The paper reviews how human-centered artificial intelligence and securityprimitive have influenced life in the modern world and how it’s useful inthe future. Human-centered A.I. has enhanced our capabilities by the wayof intelligence, human informed technology. It has created a technologythat has made machines and computer intelligently carry their function. The security primitive has enhanced the safety of the data and increasedaccessibility of data from anywhere regardless of the password is known. This has improved personalized customer activities and filled the gapbetween the human-machine. This has been successful due to the usageof heuristics which solve belowems by experimental, support vector machinewhich evaluates and group the data, natural language processingsystems which change speech to language. The results of this will lead toimage recognition, games, speech recognition, translation, and answeringquestions. In conclusion, human-centered A.I. and security primitivesis an advanced mode of technology that uses statistical mathematicalmodels that provides tools to perform certain work. The results keep onadvancing and spreading with years and it will be common in our lives.Alex Mathew 2020Journal of Computer Science Research2020,2,4:0
Health behavior outcomes in stroke survivors prescribed wearables for atrial fibrillation detection stratified by age显示文摘BACKGROUND Smartwatches have become readily accessible tools for detecting atrial fibrillation(AF).There remains limited data on how they affect psychosocial outcomes and engagement in older adults. We examine the health behavior outcomes of stroke survivors prescribed smartwatches for AF detection stratified by age.METHODS We analyzed data from the Pulsewatch study,a randomized controlled trial that enrolled patients(≥50 years)with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack and CHA2DS2-VASc≥2.Intervention participants were equipped with a cardiac patch monitor and a smartwatch-app dyad, while control participants wore the cardiac patch monitor for up to 44 days.We evaluated health behavior parameters using standardized tools, including the Consumer Health Activation Index, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire, the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey, and wear time of participants categorized into three age groups:Group 1(ages 50-60),Group 2(ages 61-69),and Group 3(ages 70-87).We performed statistical analysis using a mixedeffects repeated measures linear regression model to examine differences amongst age groups.RESULTS Comparative analysis between Groups 1,2 and 3 revealed no significant differences in anxiety, patient activation, perception of physical health and wear time. The use of smartwatch technology was associated with a decrease in perception of mental health for Group 2 compared to Group 1(β=-3.29,P=0.046).CONCLUSION Stroke survivors demonstrated a willingness to use smartwatches for AF monitoring.Importantly, among these study participants, the majority did not experience negative health behavior outcomes or decreased engagement as age increased.Joanne Mathew Jordy Mehawej Ziyue Wang Taylor Orwig Eric Ding Andreas Filippaios Syed Naeem Edith Mensah Otabil Alex Hamel Kamran Noorishirazi IrinaRadu Jane Saczynski David D.McManus Khanh-Van Tran 2024Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2024,21,3:0
A Capra hircus chromosome 19 locus linked to milk production influences mammary conformation显示文摘Background:Economically important milk production traits including milk volume, milk fat and protein yield vary considerably across dairy goats in New Zealand.A significant portion of the variation is attributable to genetic variation.Discovery of genetic markers linked to milk production traits can be utilised to drive selection of highperformance animals.A previously reported genome wide association study across dairy goats in New Zealand identified a quantitative trait locus(QTL)located on chromosome 19.The most significantly associated single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)marker for this locus is located at position 26,610,610(SNP marker rs268292132).This locus is associated with multiple milk production traits including fat, protein and volume. The predicted effect of selection for the beneficial haplotype would result in an average production increase of 2.2 kg fat,1.9 kg protein and 73.6 kg milk yield. An outstanding question was whether selection for the beneficial allele would co-select for any negative pleiotropic effects. An adverse relationship between milk production and udder health traits has been reported at this locus. Therefore,a genome wide association study was undertaken looking for loci associated with udder traits. Results:The QTL and production associated marker rs268292132 was identified in this study to also be associated with several goat udder traits including udder depth(UD),fore udder attachment(FUA)and rear udder attachment(RUA).Our study replicates the negative relationship between production and udder traits with the high production allele at position 19:26,610,610(SNP marker rs268292132)associated with an adverse change in UD,FUA and RUA.Conclusions:Our study has confirmed the negative relationship between udder traits and production traits in the NZ goat population. We have found that the frequency of the high production allele is relatively high in the NZ goat population, indicating that its effect on udder conformation is not significantly detrimental on animal health. It will however be important to monitor udder conformation as the chromosome 19 locus is progressively implemented for marker assisted selection. It will also be of interest to determine if the gene underlying the production QTL has a direct effect on mammary gland morphology or whether the changes observed are a consequence of the increased milk volume.Andrew Jiang Alex Ankersmit-Udy Sally-Anne Turner Megan Scholtens Mathew D.Littlejohn Nicolas Lopez-Villalobos Colin G.Proser Russell G.Snell Klaus Lehnert 2022Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2022,13,3:0
