2Targeted sequencing supports morphology and embryo features in resolving the classification of Cyperaceae tribe Fuireneae s.l.显示文摘Molecular phylogenetic studies based on Sanger sequences have shown that Cyperaceae tribe Fuireneae s.l.is paraphyletic.However,taxonomic sampling in these studies has been poor,topologies have been inconsistent,and support for the backbone of trees has been weak.Moreover,uncertainty still surrounds the morphological limits of Schoenoplectiella,a genus of mainly small,amphicarpic annuals that was recently segregated from Schoenoplectus.Consequently,despite ample evidence from molecular analyses that Fuireneae s.l.might consist of two to four tribal lineages,no taxonomic changes have yet been made.Here,we use the Angiosperms353 enrichment panel for targeted sequencing to(i)clarify the relationships of Fuireneae s.l.with the related tribes Abildgaardieae,Eleocharideae,and Cypereae;(ii)define the limits of Fuireneae s.s.,and(iii)test the monophyly of Fuireneae s.l.genera with emphasis on Schoenoplectus and Schoenoplectiella.Using more than a third of Fuireneae s.l.diversity,our phylogenomic analyses strongly support six genera and four major Fuireneae s.l.clades that we recognize as tribes:Bolboschoeneae stat.nov.,Fuireneae s.s.,Schoenoplecteae,and Pseudoschoeneae tr.nov.These results are consistent with morphological,micromorphological(nutlet epidermal cell shape),and embryo differences detected for each tribe.At the generic level,most sub-Saharan African perennials currently treated in Schoenoplectus are transferred to Schoenoplectiella.Our targeted sequencing results show that these species are nested in Schoenoplectiella,and their treatment here is consistent with micromorphological and embryo characters shared by all Schoenoplectiella species.Keys to recognized tribes and genera are provided.Julian R.Starr Pedro Jiménez-Mejías Alexandre R.Zuntini Étienne Léveillé-Bourret Ilias Semmouri Muthama Muasya William J.Baker Grace E.Brewer Niroshini Epitawalage Isabel Fairlie Félix Forest Izai A.B.Sabino Kikuchi Lisa Pokorny Isabel Larridon 2021Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,4:1

4National prevalence and risk factors for tungiasis in Kenya显示文摘Background Tungiasis is a highly neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea,Tunga penetrans,the female of which burrows into the skin,causing pain and itching.The disease occurs throughout South America and sub-Saharan Africa but there are few systematic data on national disease burdens.The tungiasis research community is keen to develop survey methods to fill this gap.Here we used a school-based,thorough examination method to determine the prevalence and risk factors for tungiasis in Kenya.Methods We conducted the first nationally representative survey of tungiasis,including nine counties covering the major ecological zones of Kenya.A stratified multistage random sampling was used to select 22 primary schools from each of the nine counties and to select up to 114 pupils aged 8 to 14 years in each school.Pupils were examined thoroughly for tungiasis.Two surveys were conducted,the first between May and July 2021 and the second between October 2021 and April 2023 when pupils were also interviewed for risk factors.Mixed effect logistic regression models were used to test associations of independent variables with tungiasis using the school as a random effect.Results The overall prevalence of tungiasis in the first survey was 1.35%[95%confidence interval(CI):1.15-1.59%],and 0.89%in the second survey.The prevalence ranged from 0.08%(95%CI:0.01-0.59%)in Taita Taveta county to 3.24%(95%CI:2.35-4.44%)in Kajiado county.Tungiasis infection was associated with county of residence,male sex[adjusted odds ratio(aOR)=2.01,95%CI:1.52-2.67],and lower age(aOR=0.81,95%CI:0.75-0.88).For the first time we demonstrate an association with attending public schools rather than private schools(aOR=5.62,95%CI:1.20-26.22)and lower socioeconomic status(aOR=0.10,95%CI:0.03-0.33).Using a rapid screening method of the top of feet only,would have missed 62.9%of all cases,78.9%of mild cases and 20.0%of severe cases.Conclusions Tungiasis is widely but heterogeneously distributed across Kenya.School-based surveys offer an efficient strategy for mapping tungiasis distribution.Lynne Elson Christopher Kamau Sammy Koech Christopher Muthama George Gachomba Erastus Sinoti Elwyn Chondo Eliud Mburu Miriam Wakio Jimmy Lore Marta Maia Ifedayo Adetifa Benedict Orindi Phillip Bejon Ulrike Fillinger 2023Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,5:0
5Forage Monitoring and Prediction Model for Early Warning Application over the East of Africa Region显示文摘Rangelands dominate arid and semi-arid lands of the Greater Horn of Africa(GHA)region,whereby pastoralism being the primary source of livelihood.The pastoral livelihood is affected by the seasonal variability of pasture and water resources.This research sought to design a grid-based forage monitoring and prediction model for the cross-border areas of the GHA region.A technique known as Geographically Weighted Regression was used in developing the model with monthly rainfall,temperature,soil moisture,and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI).Rainfall and soil moisture had a high correlation with NDVI,and thus formed the model development parameters.The model performed well in predicting the available forage biomass at each grid-cell with March-May and October-December seasons depicting a similar pattern but with a different magnitude in ton/ha.The output is critical for actionable early warning over the GHA region’s rangeland areas.It is expected that this mode can be used operationally for forage monitoring and prediction over the eastern Africa region and further guide the regional,national,sub-national actors and policymakers on issuing advisories before the season.Jully Ouma Dereje Wakjira Ahmed Amdihun Eva Nyaga Franklin Opijah John Muthama Viola Otieno Eugene Kayijamahe Solomon Munywa Guleid Artan 2022Journal of Atmospheric Science Research2022,5,4:0
