1Diabetes mellitus increases risk for colorectal adenomas in younger patients显示文摘AIM:To determine if diabetes mellitus(DM)is associated with increased risk of colorectal adenomas in younger subjects.METHODS:This was a retrospective cohort study of375 patients undergoing index colonoscopy at a single tertiary care center in the United States.Three cohorts of patients matched for exam date and gender were compared:(1)ages 40-49 years with DM;(2)ages40-49 years without DM;and(3)ages 50-59 years without DM.Data collected included demographics,co-morbidities,colonoscopy and pathology results.Adenoma detection rates(ADR)were calculated and compared.Conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between each cohort and ADR.RESULTS:One hundred and twenty-five patients ages40-49 with DM met study eligibility criteria.Patients in the other two cohorts were randomly selected,match-ing for date of exam and gender.ADR was 14.4%in those ages 40-49 years without DM,30.4%in those ages 40-49 years with DM,and 32.0%in those ages50-59 years without DM.Compared to those ages40-49 years without DM,ADR was higher in those ages40-49 years with DM(OR=3.1;95%CI:1.5-6.4;P=0.002)and those ages 50-59 years without DM(OR=2.9;95%CI:1.5-5.6;P=0.002).There was no difference between the ADR in those ages 40-49 years with DM and those ages 50-59 years without DM(P=0.83).CONCLUSION:DM was associated with higher risk of colorectal adenomas in patients ages 40-49 years.These subjects harbored as many adenomas as those at the standard screening age of 50-59 years without DM.Hongha T Vu Nneka Ufere Yan Yan Jean S Wang Dayna S Early Jill E Elwing 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,22:5
2Phytochemical analysis,hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of Alchornea cordifolia methanol leaf extract on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic damage in rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities of Alchornea cordifolia (A.cordifolia) leaf extract.Methods:Various solvent fractions of the methanol extract of the leaf of the plant.4.cordifolia Mull.Arg(Fam:Euphorbiaceae) were evaluated for hepatoprotective activity by carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in rats.The degree of protection was measured by using biochemical parameters such as serum glutamate oxalate transaminase(SGOT/ AST),serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase(SCPT/ALT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and total bilirubin.The in vitro antioxidant activity of the extract was also evaluated by the I,I-diphenyl 2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radical scavenging assay.The extract was subjected to preliminary phytoehemical screening.Results:The ethyl acetate and chloroform fractions,at a dose of 300 mg/kg,produced significant(P<0.05) hepatoprolection by decreasing the activities of the serum enzymes and bilirubin while there were marked scavenging of the DPPH free radicals by the fractions.The effects were comparable to those of the standard drugs used for the respective experiments,silymarin and ascorbic acid.Alkaloids,flavonoids,saponins and tannins were delected in the phylochemical screening.Conclusion:From this study,it was concluded that the plant of A.cordifolia possesses hepatoprotective as well as antioxidant activities and these activities reside mainly in the ethyl acetate and acetone fractions of methanol leaf extract.Patience O Osadebe Festus BC Okoye Philip F Uzor Nneka R Nnamani Ijeoma E Adiele Nkemakonam C Obiano 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,4:2
3Cytological and biochemical studies during the progression of alloxan-induced diabetes and possible protection of an aqueous leaf extract of Costus afer显示文摘Some plants have proven efficacy in the management of diabetes mellitus, of which Costus afer is one. This study was designed to evaluate the cytological and biochemical properties, and comparative ameliorating effects, of an aqueous extract of Costus afer Ker Gawl.(Costaceae) leaf and glibenclamide(GBM), in liver, kidney, and pancreatic injury induced by alloxan. Thirty male albino rats were divided into six weight-matched groups. Group one served as the negative control(non-induced and non-treated, control), while groups 2–6 were alloxan-induced diabetic groups. Group 2 served as a positive control(induced and non-treated, IC), groups 3–5 were treated with different doses of the extract(375, 750, and 1 125 mg/kg body weight) and glibenclamide, respectively. Body weight, absolute and relative organ weights, food and fluid intake, levels of serum glucose and liver enzymes and kidney parameters were calculated and compared. Hepatocytes, renal tubules, and pancreatic cells of diabetic rats, in diabetic non-treated and treated rats were harvested and examined histopathologically. There was dose dependent amelioration on the injuries induced by alloxan on both hepatocytes, renal tubules, and pancreatic cells after treatment with Costus afer. The glucose level was reduced significantly in the Costus afer treated diabetic rats compared with the non-treated diabetic group. 6Evaluation of rice husk ash and Portland cement reinforced clay for use as road subgrade using the CBR test显示文摘The amount of rice husk waste generated in Nigeria is posing serious threat to the environment and the ecosystem.Utilizing these wastes for productive purposes has been of interest to government and researchers.This study evaluated rice hush ash(RHA)reinforced clay for use as road subgrade,using the California Bearing Ratio(CBR)as prescribed in ASTM D1883.The clay was mixed with RHA/Portland cement in the ratios of 0%(control),2.5%,5%,7.5%and 10%.Results showed that the physical properties of the soil in its natural form did not meet the FMW&H guideline specification for subgrade road;thus there was a need to stabilize the soil.As the percentage of RHA increased,the strength of the soil increased,with the maximum strength observed at 5%RHA,beyond which there was decrease in the load bearing capacity of the soil.Optimal CBR ratio of 9.35%was obtained at 5%RHA,5%Portland cement and 90%clay soil.Comparing this result with the soil at natural state(CBR=1.55%),it shows that RHA is a good improvement agent for the soil.This research can be beneficial to highway road construction in areas with similar soil conditions.Nneka Juliana Ogbuagu Emmanuel Amagu Echiegu Uche Jenice Chiwetalu 2018Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts2018,3,2:0
7Remedial ability of maize(Zea-Mays)on lead contamination under potted condition and non-potted field soil condition显示文摘This study presents the remedial ability of maize on lead(Pb)contaminated soil.Soil samples were collected randomly from the site and subjected to physico-chemical tests before experimen-tation.The samples were contaminated artificially at six different concentration levels of lead nitrate(Pb(NO_(3))_(2)).Experimental design was 4-factorial combination(6×6×2×1).The study duration was 10 weeks,and during this period,Pb contents of the soil were analyzed in intervals of two weeks.Analyzed physico-chemical properties of the soil showed that the soil was loamy with pH 6.82,electrical conductivity 1.62 dS/m and adequate macro nutrient elements.The av-erage percentage removal of Pb from the soil was 2.25%and 3.67%for potted and non-potted experiments,respectively.Similarly,the average percentage of Pb in the roots was 1.10%and 1.68%for potted and non-potted experiments,respectively.The result of this study indicated that extraction of Pb by the plant system increased with the increase of lead concentration in the soil as well as in the extent of vegetation attained by the crop.It also clearly showed that the non-potted experiments demonstrated greater influence on removal of Pb from the soil system than the potted experiments.Uche Jenice Chiwetalu Constantine Crowner Mbajiorgu Nneka Juliana Ogbuagu 2020Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts2020,5,1:0

10Geoelectrical Investigation of Groundwater Potentials of Northern Paiko,Niger State,North Central Nigeria显示文摘Vertical electrical sounding(VES) was carried out in northern part of Paiko, North Central Nigeria, using Abem terrameter model SAS 4000 to determine the subsurface layer parameters(resistivities, depths and thickness) employed in delineating the groundwater potential of the area. A total of six transverses with ten VES stations along each traverse, at intervals of 50 m were investigated. It has a maximum current electrode separation(AB/2) of 100 m. Three to four distinct geoelectric layers were observed, namely, the top layer, the weathered layer, the fractured/fresh layer, and the fresh basement layer. The observed frequencies in curve types include 21% of H, 4.2% of HA, 2.4% of K, 4.2% of A, 1.67% of KH and 3% of HK. Eight VES stations were delineated as ground water potentials of the area, with third and fourth layer resistivities ranging from 191 to 398 ?·m. Depths range from 13.60 to 36.60 m and thickness varies from 9.23 to 30.51 m. A correlation of the borehole log with the VES lithology is in agreement. 11Bioactive profile of borno brown Vigna unguiculata grains as influenced by pre-harvest synthetic chemicals显示文摘This study investigated the impact of pre-harvest synthetic chemical treatments on the post-harvest bioactive contents,pasting,colour,and thermal properties of borno brown V.unguiculata(L.)Walp grains.Seeds of borno brown V.unguiculata(L.)Walp was planted on an already ploughed,harrowed and ridged plot of land with a portion cultivated as organic and another non-organic.After 90 days,mature grains were harvested and analyzed using standard procedures.Results showed that a total of 44.33 g bioactive compounds/100g grain was present in the organic borno brown V.unguiculata grains whereas,20.56 g bioactive compounds/100g grain was present in the non-organic(control).The identified bioactive compounds in the organic grains included[heneicosane(4.50g/100g grain)];[12-Methyl-E,E-2,13-octadecadien-1-ol(4.09/100g grain)];[3-(2-Hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone(7.40 g/100g grain)];[Methaqualone(9.08 g/100g grain)].The non-organic contained[heneicosane(4.07g/100g grain)];[3-(2-Hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone(5.09 g/100g grain)];[Methaqualone(10.61 g/100g grain)].Flavonoids,alkaloids,total phenolic,2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazl(DPPH)and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power(FRAP)contents of the organic grains were 19 mgRE/100g,3.40 mg/100g,1550 mgGAE/100g,2840μmolTEAC/100g,and 20.08 mmol Fe^(2+)/100g,respectively.The non-organic grains had flavonoids(11.31 mgRE/100g),alkaloids(1.86 mg/100g),total phenolic(1110 mgGAE/100g),DPPH(1779μmolTEAC/100g)and FRAP(12.24 mmol Fe^(2+)/100g).The peak viscosity of 111.52 RVU,final viscosity(141.25 RVU)and pasting temperature(82.01℃)were obtained for the organic grains while non-organic had peak viscosity of 93.10RVU,final viscosity(95.20 RVU)and pasting temperature(80.10℃).The colour parameters L^(*),a^(*),b^(*)and ΔE were 73.10,0.68,14.47 and 12.98 for the organic and 84.25,0.30,21.10,and 0.00,respectively for non-organic grains.The thermal property showed enthalpy(ΔH)and peak temperature(T_(p))of 3.12 J/g and 78.25℃ for organic,and 2.14 J/g and 76.28℃ for non-organic grains,respectively.Phenolic compounds profile showed that organic grains were richer in epicatechin,gallic acid,ferulic acid,chlorogenic acid,4-hydroxy benzoic acid,and catechin.Organic grains showed significant(p<0.05)superiority in bioactive compounds,phytochemicals,and antioxidants over non-organic grains.Good pasting properties of the organic grains showed that it could function as a food thickener.Organic borno brown V.unguiculata grains are rich in health-promoting compounds and could,therefore,be used as an ingredient in the development of functional foods.Temitope Omolayo Fasuan Nneka Nkechi Uchegbu Titilope Modupe Olagunju Oyenike Olubunmi Falola 2022Food Bioscience2022,45,1:0

13Comparing posture induced intraocular pressure variations in normal subjects and glaucoma patients显示文摘AIM:To compare the posture-induced variations in intraocular pressure(IOP)between the primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)and non-glaucomatous eyes.METHODS:A case-controlled age matched study was conducted in 55 successive newly diagnosed POAG and 56 non-glaucomatous patients seen in glaucoma clinic and general outpatient eye clinic in the Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital,Abakaliki.The IOPs of eligible correspondents were measured with Perkin’s hand-held tonometer in the sitting,supine flat and supine with pillow positions respectively.Measurement of IOP in each position was done after 15 min of assuming such posture.RESULTS:The IOP difference between the sitting and supine flat position was significantly higher in the POAG than non-glaucoma subjects(7.68±2.08 vs 4.03±0.13 mm Hg,P<0.001).The IOP difference between the sitting and supine with pillow positions was 2.61±1.49 mm Hg for POAG and 1.44±0.70 mm Hg in non-glaucoma(P<0.001),while difference between supine flat and supine with pillow positions was 5.07±2.24 mm Hg in POAG and 2.59±0.66 mm Hg in non-glaucomatous patients(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Greater variations in posture induced IOP occurred in POAG patients than non-glaucomatous.The posture induced IOP variation is lowest in the sitting position and highest in the supine flat position.Evaluation of posture induced IOP changes may be an important tool in the management of glaucoma.Onyekachi Jane Ireka Chimdia E Ogbonnaya Obinna C Arinze Nneka Ogbu Chimdi M Chuka-Okosa 2021International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2021,14,3:0
14Autonomous Unbiased Study Group Formation Algorithm for Rapid Knowledge Propagation显示文摘Knowledge propagation is a necessity,both in academics and in the industry.The focus of this work is on how to achieve rapid knowledge propaga-tion using collaborative study groups.The practice of knowledge sharing in study groupsfinds relevance in conferences,workshops,and class rooms.Unfortu-nately,there appears to be only few researches on empirical best practices and techniques on study groups formation,especially for achieving rapid knowledge propagation.This work bridges this gap by presenting a workflow driven compu-tational algorithm for autonomous and unbiased formation of study groups.The system workflow consists of a chronology of stages,each made of distinct steps.Two of the most important steps,subsumed within the algorithmic stage,are the algorithms that resolve the decisional problem of number of study groups to be formed,as well as the most effective permutation of the study group participants to form collaborative pairs.This work contributes a number of new algorithmic concepts,such as autonomous and unbiased matching,exhaustive multiplication technique,twisted round-robin transversal,equilibrium summation,among others.The concept of autonomous and unbiased matching is centered on the constitution of study groups and pairs purely based on the participants’performances in an examination,rather than through any external process.As part of practical demon-stration of this work,study group formation as well as unbiased pairing were fully demonstrated for a collaborative learning size of forty(40)participants,and partially for study groups of 50,60 and 80 participants.The quantitative proof of this work was done through the technique called equilibrium summation,as well as the calculation of inter-study group Pearson Correlation Coefficients,which resulted in values higher than 0.9 in all cases.Real life experimentation was carried out while teaching Object-Oriented Programming to forty(40)under-graduates between February and May 2021.Empirical result showed that the per-formance of the learners was improved appreciably.This work will therefore be of immense benefit to the industry,academics and research community involved in collaborative learning.Monday Eze Charles Okunbor Solomon Esomu Nneka Richard-Nnabu Kayode Oladapo Oghenetega Avwokuruaye Abisola Olayiwola Akpovi Ominike Godwin Odulaja Oluwatobi Akinmerese 2022Computer Systems Science & Engineering2022,42,7:0
