Occurrence, seasonal variation and human exposure to pharmaceuticals and personal care products in surface water, groundwater and drinking water in Lagos State,Nigeria显示文摘The occurrence of 28 pharmaceuticals and personal care products(PPCPs)was investigated in 17 surface water samples(rivers, canals, and lagoons),12 groundwater samples(wells and boreholes, which can also be consumed for drinking)and 8 drinking water samples(bottles and sachets)during dry and rainy seasons in Lagos state,Nigeria. The most prevalent compound detected in all samples was amoxicillin(an antibiotic)at median concentrations of 1614,238 and 358 ng/L in surface water, ground water and drinking water, respectively. This is of concern due to potential impact on development of antibioticresistant microbial strains.Other frequently-detected compounds include acetaminophen, nicotine, ibuprofen, and codeine with detection frequencies of more than 70%.Investigation of seasonal variability revealed that glyburide, caffeine, naproxen and diclofenac concentrations were significantly(P<0.05)higher during the dry season(winter),while Nicotine and Codeine levels were higher during the rainy season(summer). The factors influencing such seasonal variability include:dilution by extensive rainfall, agricultural activity(for nicotine)and usage patterns of pharmaceuticals among the local community.Measured concentrations in drinking water samples were used to assess inadvertent human exposure to PPCPs in Nigerian adults. Results revealed average daily exposures of 81,14 and 3 ngƩPPCPs/kg BW/day via drinking borehole, sachet water and bottled water, respectively. While there exists no health-based limit value(HBLV)for chronic exposure to mixtures of PPCPs,our results raise concern and warrant further investigation of the potential health implications of such unintended PPCPs exposure.Anekwe Jennifer Ebele Temilola Oluseyi Daniel S.Drage Stuart Harrad Mohamed Abou-Elwafa Abdallah 2020Emerging Contaminants2020,6,1:4
Hexabromocyclododecane and tetrabromobisphenol-A in indoor dust from France, Kazakhstan and Nigeria: Implications for human exposure显示文摘Concentrations of hexabromocyclododecane isomers(α-,β-and γ-HBCDs)and tetrabromobisphenol-A(TBBP-A)were measured-for the first time-in indoor dust from homes, offices and cars from France,Kazakhstan and Nigeria.∑HBCDs in French and Kazakhstani house dust(median=1351 and 280 ng g^-1,respectively)were consistent with previous reports from the UK and Romania, respectively.Concentrations of ∑HBCDs in Nigerian domestic dust(median=394 ng g^-1)were substantially higher than those reported from Egyptian homes. In general, concentrations of ∑HBCDs in the studied microenvironments were higher than those of TBBP-A,which may be attributed to the major application of TBBP-A as a reactive flame retardant;rendering its release to dust more difficult.Statistical analysis revealed significantly lower ∑HBCDs in French houses than those found in both offices and cars, while ∑HBCDs in cars from Kazakhstan were higher(P<0.05)than those in homes and offices.Moreover,TBBP-A concentrations in car dust from Nigeria were lower than those found in homes and offices.Exposure estimates revealed higher intake of HBCDs and TBBP-A by toddlers via indoor dust ingestion compared to adults.Combined with their low body weight, this can raise concerns over the potential adverse health effects of such high exposure in toddlers.Mohamed Abou-Elwafa Abdallah Michael Bressi Temilola Oluseyi Stuart Harrad 2016Emerging Contaminants2016,2,2:2

Determinants of adoption of multiple sustainable agricultural practices among smallholder farmers in Nigeria显示文摘Despite the important roles of Sustainable Agricultural Practices(SAPs)in improving productivity, welfare, and food security of farming households, the adoption rates of SAPs have been perceived to be generally low, especially in developing countries.Using cross-sectional data collected from the 2015 Nigeria General Household Survey, this study examines the factors influencing the adoption of multiple SAPs,while also considering the drivers of the intensity of adoption of these practices. The methods of data analysis are based on the Multivariate probit and the Ordered probit models. The SAPs considered include improved seeds, inorganic fertilizer,mixed-cropping techniques, and organic manure. The empirical results show that farmers’adoption of different SAPs and their intensity of use depend significantly on factors such as the age of household head, gender, education, household size, access to extension services, and household wealth status. Our findings imply that policymakers and agricultural development agencies should seek to maintain or increase household asset bases, and encourage both formal and informal training programme among farming households to facilitate the adoption of SAPs.Zainab Oyetunde-Usman Kehinde Oluseyi Olagunju Oyinlola Rafiat Ogunpaimo 2021International Soil and Water Conservation Research2021,9,2:0
Screening Landraces for Additional Sources of Field Resistance to Cassava Mosaic Disease and Green Mite for Integration into the Cassava Improvement Program显示文摘Twelve cassava landraces were evaluated for sources of resistance genes to diseases and pests of major economic importance in Africa. The objective was to assess their levels of field resistance to mosaic disease (ACMD), bacterial blight (CBB), anthracnose (CAD), and green mite (CGM), compared to TMS30572, an elite cultivar widely adopted in Africa. Considerable genotypic variation was observed among cultivars for resistance to ACMD and CGM but not for CBB and CAD. The lowest mean incidence of 12% and severity of 1.8 on a scale of 1-5 for ACMD was recorded for Atu, a landrace with farmer acceptable qualities. In comparison, the improved cultivar, TMS 30572, had a mean disease incidence of 72% and a severity score of 2.8. Another landrace, MS-20 had the lowest CGM damage score (2.1) while TMS 30572 emerged as one of the susceptible cultivars with a damage score of 3. Additional sources of resistance to ACMD and CGM that may possibly be better than the popular improved cultivar, TMS 30572, were identified in this study. These could serve as novel sources of additional genes to complement existing resources for elite cassava breeding in Africa.Adebola Raji Oluseyi Ladeinde Alfred Dixon 2008Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2008,50,3:0
Source rock geochemistry of central and northwestern Niger Delta: Inference from aromatic hydrocarbons content显示文摘The influence of origin, depositional environment and thermal maturity of organic matter on the occurrence of aromatic hydrocarbons in source rocks from the central and northwestern Niger Delta was investigated. Eighty two source rock samples from four oil wells in the central and northwestern Niger Delta were analyzed for the aromatic hydrocarbon content using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results of analysis of aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of the source rock extracts show the presence of many classes of aromatic hydrocarbons, which include naphthalenes, phenanthrenes, biphenyls, dibenzothiophenes and fluorenes. Trimethylnaphthalene (TMN) is the most abundant among the naphthalenes while dimethylphenanthrene (DMP) is the most abundant among the phenanthrenes. Among the biphenyls, 3-methylbiphenyl (3 MB) is the most abundant while 4-methyldibenzothiophene (4MDBT) is the most abundant among the dibenzothiphenes. Only two fluorenes were detected, and fluorene is more in abundance than 1-methylfluorene (1 MF). Depositional environment indicators of aromatic hydrocarbon organic matter reveal that the organic materials in the source rocks in these wells were deposited in marine-to-swamp depositional environments under reducing to suboxic conditions. Thermal maturity indicators calculated from the abundance of the aromatic hydrocarbons indicate that the source rock samples are thermally mature. Most of the source rocks are at the peak of oil window while a few at the early oil window. Source rocks from wells GB, OP and OT in the central Niger Delta are thermally more mature than those from well AW in the northwestern Niger Delta.Akinsehinwa Akinlua Olugbemiga Raphael Dada Fuad Oluseyi Usman Solomon Adeniyi Adekola 2023Energy Geoscience2023,4,3:0
