Real-time computerized video enhancement for minimally invasive fetoscopic surgery显示文摘Background:The only definitive treatment for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome is minimally invasive fetoscopic surgery for the selective coagulation of placental blood vessels.Fetoscopic surgery is a technically challenging operation, mainly due to the poor visibility conditions in the uterine environment. We present the design of an algorithm for the computerized enhancement of fetoscopic video and show that the enhanced video increases the ability of human users to identify blood vessels within fetoscopic video rapidly and accurately. Methods:A computer algorithm for the enhancement of fetoscopic video frames was created.First, optical fiber artifacts were removed via a modification of unsharp masking.Second, image contrast was increased via Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization(CLAHE).Third, the effect of contrast enhancements on stationary features was removed by normalizing to a windowed mean of the video frames.Fourth, color information was reincorporated by combining the mean-normalized result with the unnormalized contrast enhanced image using the soft light blending algorithm.Medical trainees(n?16)were recruited into a study to validate the algorithm.Subjects were shown enhanced or unenhanced fetoscopic video frames on a screen and were asked to identify whether a randomly placed marker fell on a blood vessel or on background. The accuracy of their responses was recorded. Results:On the subset of images where subjects had the lowest mean accuracy in identifying the placement of the marker, subjects performed better when viewing video frames enhanced by the computer(accuracy 74.27%;SE 0.97)than when viewing unenhanced video frames(accuracy 63.78%;SE 2.79).This result was statistically significant(p<0.01).Conclusion:Real-time computerized enhancement of fetoscopic video has the potential to ease the readability of video in poor lighting conditions, thus providing a benefit to the surgeon intraoperatively.Praneeth Sadda John Onofrey Metehan Imamoglu Xenophon Papademetris Bilal Qarni Mert Ozan Bahtiyar 2018Laparoscopic, Endoscopic and Robotic Surgery2018,1,2:1

Expanding beyond endoscopy: A review of non-invasive modalities in Barrett’s esophagus screening and surveillance显示文摘Barrett’s esophagus(BE)is a condition that results from replacement of the damaged normal squamous esophageal mucosa to intestinal columnar mucosa and is the most significant predisposing factor for development of esophageal adenocarcinoma.Current guidelines recommend endoscopic evaluation for screening and surveillance based on various risk factors which has limitations such as invasiveness, availability of a trained specialist, patient logistics and cost.Trans-nasal endoscopy is a less invasive modality but still has similar limitations such as limited availability of trained specialist and costs.Non-endoscopic modalities,in comparison, require minimal intervention, can be done in an office visit and has the potential to be a more ideal choice for mass public screening and surveillance, particularly in patents at low risk for BE.These include newer generations of esophageal capsule endoscopy which provides direct visualization of BE,and tethered capsule endomicroscopy which can obtain high-resolution images of the esophagus.Various cell collection devices coupled with biomarkers have been used for BE screening.Cytosponge,in combination with TFF3,as well as EsophaCap and EsoCheck have shown promising results in various studies when used with various biomarkers.Other modalities including circulatory microRNAs and volatile organic compounds that have demonstrated favorable outcomes.Use of these cell collection methods for BE surveillance is a potential area of future research.Dariush Shahsavari Praneeth Kudaravalli John Erikson L Yap Kenneth J Vega 2022World Journal of Gastroenterology2022,28,32:1
Microarchitectural mimicking of stroma-induced vasculature compression in pancreatic tumors using a 3D engineered model显示文摘Fibrotic tumors, such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC),are characterized for high desmoplastic reaction, which results in high intra-tumoral solid stress leading to the compression of blood vessels. These microarchitectural alterations cause loss of blood flow and poor intra-tumoral delivery of therapeutics.Currently, there is a lack of relevant in vitro models capable of replicating these mechanical characteristics and to test anti-desmoplastic compounds. Here,a multi-layered vascularized 3D PDAC model consisting of primary human pancreatic stellate cells(PSCs)embedded in collagen/fibrinogen(Col/Fib),mimicking tumor tissue within adjunct healthy tissue,is presented to study the fibrosis-induced compression of vasculature in PDAC.It is demonstrated how the mechanical and biological stimulation induce PSC activation, extracellular matrix production and eventually vessel compression. The clinical relevance is confirmed by correlating with patient transcriptomic data.Furthermore, the effects of gradual vessel compression on the fluid dynamics occurring within the channel is evaluated in silico. Finally,it is demonstrated how cancer-associated fibroblast(CAF)-modulatory therapeutics can inhibit the cell-mediated compression of blood vessels in PDAC in vitro,in silico and in vivo.It is envisioned that this 3D model is used to improve the understanding of mechanical characteristics in tumors and for evaluating novel anti-desmoplastic therapeutics.Marcel Alexander Heinrich Irene Uboldi Praneeth Reddy Kuninty Marc J.K.Ankone Joop van Baarlen Yu Shrike Zhang Kartik Jain Jai Prakash 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,4:0
Quantification of vascular morphology in optical coherence tomography angiography in primary open angle glaucoma显示文摘open-angle glaucoma(POAG)using optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)scans. Methods:This is a retrospective and cross-sectional study which include healthy individuals and individuals with POAG that underwent OCTA imaging at an academic center's glaucoma clinic. We analyzed OCTA scans of the macula and optic nerve head(ONH)of one eye from each subject to quantitatively measure vessel density(VD),vessel length density(VLD),and branchpoint density(BPD).We compared these 3 parameters between the healthy and POAG groups and used logistic regression classification models to determine their diagnostic value in differentiating healthy and glaucomatous eyes. Results:We included 49 healthy subjects and 49 subjects with POAG.After age-adjusted analysis, the parameters of VD,VLD,and BPD were significantly reduced in eyes with POAG(P<0.001)in all scan layers and most significantly around the ONH.The parameter with the best performances were radial peripapillary capillary(RPC)VD[AUC(areas under the curve):0.939(0.891,0.987)]which had statistically higher performances(P<0.05)than parameters in the superficial or deep layers. All 3 parameters in the RPC layer had statistically similar performances. Conclusions:We found that VD,VLD,and BPD were reduced in glaucomatous eyes. The morphologic parameters of VLD and BPD had similar performances to the traditional parameter of VD in RPC layers. Our results suggest that vascular morphology parameters may provide additional value in the diagnosis and evaluation of glaucoma.Praneeth Kalva Rubeel Akram Priya Mekala Monica Patel Sruthi Suresh Karanjit S.Kooner 2023Advances in Ophthalmology Practice and Research2023,3,3:0
Mosaicing of multiplanar regions through autonomous navigation of off-the-shelf quadcopter显示文摘The real world is made up of multiplanar and curved surfaces.Imaging such surfaces with an orthographic view using a handheld camera is tiring if the scene encompasses a view larger than the camera field of view.If the scene is geographically beyond the reach of humans,or access to the scene is denied,it is not possible to take such a frontal view of the scene from handheld devices. The advent of inexpensive flying vehicles such as quadcopters enables the orthographic imaging of large surfaces for later analysis either for leisure or serious scientific purposes. However, manual navigation of the quadcopter around such surfaces is tedious and results are not satisfactory. In this paper, the authors present a method for autonomous navigation of a quadcopter for imaging multiplanar surfaces. The proposed method builds on the existing parallel tracking and mapping based approach to create an approximate sparse three-dimensional map of the input scene.Next, the authors determine precise locations for obtaining videos for each bounded plane, and then autonomously manoeuver the quadcopter at these waypoints. This results in an end-to-end application for visualising scenes with an off-the-shelf quadcopter.Meghshyam G.Prasad Sona Praneeth Akula Anirudh Vemula Sharat Chandran 2019IET Cyber-Systems and Robotics2019,1,3:0
