1TT virus infection in patients with chronic hepatitis B and response of TTV to lamivudine显示文摘AIM: To investigate the responses of TT virus (TTV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) to a long-term lamivudine therapy.METHODS: Sixteen patients infected with both TTV and HBV were treated with lamivudine 100 mg daily for 30 months. Blood samples were drawn at the beginning of the therapy and subsequently at month 3, 6, 9, 12 and 30.Serum TTV was quantified by real time PCR and serum HBV was detected by hybridization assay and nested polymerase chain reaction.RESULTS: TTV infection was detected in 100 % of HBV-infected patients. Loss of serum TTV DNA after one year of treatment occurred in 1/16 (6 %) patients. At the end of therapy, TTV DNA was positive in 94 % of them. 3Error induced by the estimation of the corneal power and the effective lens position with a rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal intraocular lens显示文摘AIM : To evaluate the prediction error in intraocular lens(IOL) power calculation for a rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal IOL and the impact on this error of the optimization of the keratometric estimation of the corneal power and the prediction of the effective lens position(ELP).METHODS: Retrospective study including a total of 25 eyes of 13 patients(age, 50 to 83y) with previous cataract surgery with implantation of the Lentis Mplus LS-312 IOL(Oculentis Gmb H, Germany). In all cases, an adjusted IOL power(P IOLadj) was calculated based on Gaussian optics using a variable keratometric index value(n kadj) for the estimation of the corneal power(P kadj) and on a new value for ELP(ELP adj) obtained by multiple regression analysis.This P IOLadj was compared with the IOL power implanted(P IOLReal) and the value proposed by three conventional formulas(Haigis, Hoffer Q and Holladay Ⅰ).RESULTS: P IOLReal was not significantly different than P IOLadj and Holladay IOL power(P >0.05). In the Bland and Altman analysis, P IOLadj showed lower mean difference(-0.07 D) and limits of agreement(of 1.47 and-1.61 D)when compared to P IOLReal than the IOL power value obtained with the Holladay formula. Furthermore, ELP adj was significantly lower than ELP calculated with other conventional formulas(P <0.01) and was found to be dependent on axial length, anterior chamber depth and P kadj. 4Role of double-balloon enteroscopy in malignant small bowel tumors显示文摘AIM: To assess the double-balloon enteroscopy(DBE) role in malignant small bowel tumors(MSBT).METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study performed in a single center. All consecutive patients who underwent a DBE with final diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm from 2004 to 2014 in our referral center were included. Patient demographic and clinical pathological characteristics were recorded and reviewed. MSBT diagnosis was achieved either by DBE directed biopsy with multiple tissue sampling, endoscopic findings or histological analysis of surgical specimen. We have analyzed double-balloon enteroscopy impact in outcome and clinical course of these patients. RESULTS: Of 627 patients, 28(4.5%)(mean age = 60 ± 17.3 years) underwent 30 procedures(25 anterograde, 5 retrograde) and were diagnosed of a malignant tumor. Patients presented with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(n = 19, 67.9%), occlusion syndrome(n = 7, 25%) and diarrhea(n = 1, 3.6%). They were diagnosed by DBE biopsy(n = 18, 64.3%), histological analysis of surgical specimen(n = 7, 25%) and unequivocal endoscopic findings(n = 2, 7.1%). Gastrointestinal stromal tumor(n = 8, 28.6%), adenocarcinoma(n = 7, 25%), lymphoma(n = 4, 14.3%), neuroendocrine tumor(n = 4, 14.3%), metastatic(n = 3, 10.7%) and Kaposi sarcoma(n = 1, 3.6%) were identified. 7Feather content of porphyrins in Eurasian eagle owl(Bubo bubo)fledglings depends on body condition and breeding site quality显示文摘Porphyrins are pigments produced in most animal cells during the synthesis of heme,but their importance for external coloration is unclear.Owls(Order Strigiformes)are among the few animals that accumulate porphyrins in the integument,where it could serve as a means of signaling.Here we hypothesized that the porphyrin content of feathers may depend on body condition and breeding site quality in Eurasian eagle owl(Bubo bubo)fledglings and,thus,constitute amplifiers of the quality of the area where they are born.Using high-performance liquid chromatography,we found 2 porphyrins(protoporphyrin IX and coproporphyrin III)in the body feathers of 19 eagle owl fledglings from 7 breeding territories.Coproporphyrin III,but not protoporphyrin IX feather concentration,was positively associated with the body mass of fledglings and with the quality of the breeding sites where they were reared with respect to food quality and availability.As coproporphyrin III is produced under oxidative stress,we suggest that good breeding sites may lead to fledglings in good condition.This,in turn,may make fledglings induce a certain level of free radical and coproporphyrin III production to signal to conspecifics their site-mediated capacity to cope with oxidative stress.This is the first time that porphyrin content in the integument has been found to be related to individual quality,opening a new scenario for studying evolution of animal coloration.Ismael GALVÁN María del Mar DELGADO Pablo RCAMARERO Rafael MATEO RuiLOURENÇO Vincenzo PENTERIANI 2018Integrative Zoology2018,13,5:0
8Image analysis of Moroccan carob seeds(Ceratonia siliqua L.)revealed substantial intraspecific variations depending on climate and geographic origin显示文摘Background:The carob tree(Ceratonia siliqua L.)is one of the most iconic tree species of the Mediterranean region,with valuable economic,ecological and cultural value.Carob has been exploited around the Mediterranean region since antiquity and has been regarded as an important component of natural habitats and traditional agroecosystems.Several studies have focused on its morphological,biochemical,and genetic diversity.However,less is known about the intraspecific variation of seed traits.In this regard,and as an overall objective,we intend to evaluate the amplitude and the expression of intraspecific variations of carob seed traits at different ecological scales ranging from individual trees to different geographical landscapes.In addition,we investigated how the climate along the study area affects the extent of carob seed variability.Using image analysis techniques,we measured seven traits related to the size and the shape of 1740 seeds collected from 18 populations of spontaneous C.siliqua distributed along a latitudinal transect in Morocco under different bioclimatic conditions.Results:The morphometric analysis of carob seed showed the effectiveness of adopted approach to highlight the amount and the amplitude of intraspecific variation according to geographic and climatic factors.Seed trait analysis revealed high intraspecific variability,explained by differences between and among carob populations and geographic zones.Seed area,perimeter,length,and width showed the largest variability between geographic zones.However,circularity,aspect ratio,and seed roundness showed higher variability at the tree level.Finally,our results show that seed traits vary depending on altitude and climate condition.Conclusions:Revealing the amount and the structure of intraspecific traits variability of carob seed provides interesting insights to understand the mechanisms underlying trees adaptation to various environmental and ecological conditions.Therefore,intraspecific variation of seed traits should be integrated into trait‑based functional ecology to assess plant species responses to environmental changes.Jalal Kassout Younes Hmimsa Salama El Fatehi Abdeltif El Ouahrani Khalil Kadaoui Soufian Chakkour David Ariza‑Mateos Guillermo Palacios‑Rodríguez Rafael Navarro‑Cerrillo Mohammed Ater 2022Ecological Processes2022,11,1:0
