| 1 | SEDIMENT RESEARCH FOR THE THREE GORGES PROJECT ON THE YANGTZE RIVER SINCE 1993显示文摘This article addresses sediment research carried out for the Three Gorges Project since 1993, when the construction of the project was formally started. Emphasis of the research has been placed on the solution of relevant problems arising from design and construction of various structures, including sedimentation problems in the Chongqing reach; layout of the upper lock approach channel and ways and means to mitigate its deposition; increasing reservoir capacity by optimizing reservoir operation; compensating depth of flow required by navigation below the Gezhouba Project caused by scouring; mitigation of adverse effects of erosion on the reach from Zhicheng to Jiangkou; and evaluating scour of the Jinjiang reach caused by releasing flows of low concentrations from the TGP. | 2 | Preparation and characterization of sulfated TiO_2 with rhodium modification used in esterification reaction and decomposition of methyl orange显示文摘A unique Rh/TiO_2 solid acid catalyst modified with H_2SO_4 was synthesized and evaluated in the esterification reaction of propylene glycol methyl ether and decomposition of methyl orange(MO) in aqueous phase under halogen lamp irradiation. For this purpose, rhodium(Rh) nanoparticles were loaded on SO_4^(2-)/TiO_2 via the photo-deposition method. It was found that SO_4^(2-)/Rh–TiO_2 exhibited stronger catalytic activity than SO_4^(2-)/TiO_2. The new catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction(XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET), Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and high-resolution(HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Results from XRD and BET show that SO_4^(2-)/Rh–TiO_2 has higher specific surface area and smaller pore size than SO42-/TiO_2. The distribution of loaded Rh was found to be uniform with a particle size of 2–4 nm. Data from XPS reveal that Rh primarily exists as Rh^0 and Rh^(3+)in Rh–TiO_2 and SO_4^(2)-/Rh–TiO_2. These valence forms of Rh likely contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity. Furthermore, FT-IR spectra of the catalysts show an abundance of surface hydroxyl groups, which help the formation of hydroxyl radicals and the enhancement of surface acid density. The results show that more acid sites are formed on the sulfated Rh–TiO_2, and these acidic sites are largely responsible for improving the catalytic performance. | 3 | Finite element modeling of cable sliding and its effect on dynamic response of cable-supported truss显示文摘The cable system of cable-supported structures usually bears high tension forces, and clip joints may fail to resist cable sliding in cases of earthquake excitations or sudden cable breaks. A analytical method that considers the dynamic cable sliding effect is proposed in this paper. Cable sliding behaviors and the resultant dynamic responses are solved by combining the vector form intrinsic finite element framework with cable force redistribution calculations that consider joint frictions. The cable sliding effect and the frictional tension loss are solved with the original length method that uses cable length and the original length relations. Then, the balanced tension distributions are calculated after frictional sliding. The proposed analytical method is achieved within MATLAB and applied to simulate the dynamic response of a cable-supported plane truss under seismic excitation and sudden cable break. During seismic excitations, the cable sliding behavior in the cable-supported truss have an averaging effect on the oscillation magnitudes, but it also magnifies the internal force response in the upper truss structure.
