| 1 | Breath-based meditation: A mechanism to restore the physiological and cognitive reserves for optimal human performance显示文摘Stress can be associated with many physiologicalchanges resulting in significant decrements in human performance.Due to growing interests in alternative and complementary medicine by Westerners, many of the traditions and holistic yogic breathing practices today are being utilized as a measure for healthier lifestyles. These state-of-the-art practices can have a significant impact on common mental health conditions such as depression and generalized anxiety disorder. However, the potential of yogic breathing on optimizing human performance and overall well-being is not well known.Breathing techniques such as alternate nostril,Sudarshan Kriya and bhastrika utilizes rhythmic breathing to guide practitioners into a deep meditative state of relaxation and promote self-awareness.Furthermore,yogic breathing is physiologically stimulating and can be described as a natural'technological'solution to optimize human performance which can be categorized into:(1)cognitive function(i.e.,mind,vigilance);and(2)physical performance(i.e.,cardiorespiratory,metabolism,exercise,whole body).Based on previous studies,we postulate that daily practice of breathing meditation techniques play a significant role in preserving the compensatory mechanisms available to sustain physiological function. This preservation of physiological function may help to offset the time associated with reaching a threshold for clinical expression of chronic state(i.e.,hypertension,depression,dementia)or acute state(i.e.,massive hemorrhage, panic attic)of medical conditions. However, additional rigorous biomedical research is needed to evaluate the physiological mechanisms of various forms of meditation(i.e.,breath-based,mantra,mindfulness)on human performance. These efforts will help to define how compensatory reserve mechanisms of cardiovascular and immune systems are modulated by breath-based meditation. While it has been suggested that breath-based meditation is easier for beginning practitioners when compared to other forms of meditation more research is needed to elucidate these observations.A breath-based meditation sequence suchas Sudarshan Kriya has the potential to help develop an individual’s self-awareness and support better integration of the brain(i.e.,mind)with other organ systems(i.e.,body)for enhanced human performance. | Kirtigandha Salwe Carter Robert Carter III | 2016 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2016,4,4: | 4 |
| 2 | On-line non-intrusive particle size measurement of pulverised fuel through digital imaging显示文摘This paper presents the basic principles of particle size measurement and latest industrial results recorded using an innovative optical instrumentation system designed to measure the size distribution of particles in a pneumatic suspension. The system is non-intrusive and cost-effective.A low-cost CCD camera is used to capture images of the particulate flow field, which is illuminated by a low-cost pulsed laser sheet generator. The particle size distribution is then determined by processing the particle images through the use of novel processing algorithms.Experimental results obtained in the past on a small scale particle flow test rig have demonstrated that the system is capable of measuring the size distribution of pneumatically conveyed particles with an accuracy of a few percent. For the present paper results obtained when testing the system at a 4 MW industrial test facility are presented.Comparisons are made with both off-line reference data achieved through sieving and on-line laser diffraction data recorded using an intrusive, extractive,Malvern Instruments system. In general there is good agreement between results when considering the characteristics and limitations of the individual methodologies. The novel imaging system shows itself to be rugged, practical and useful under genuine industrial conditions. | Carter Robert M | 2007 | 仪器仪表学报2007,28,11: | 3 |

| 9 | Heat Related Illnesses显示文摘KEY POINTS Heat illnesses range in severity from mild(heat rash, heat syncope, cramps) to serious(heat exhaustion, heat injury, heat stroke).Although heat illness can occur in anyone,an increased risk is associated with a variety of environmental factors, personal characteristics, health conditions, and medications. The risk of serious heat illness can be markedly reduced by implementing a variety of countermeasures, including becoming acclimated to the heat, managing heat stress exposure, and maintaining hydration.Athletes, coaches, training staff, and medical personnel should be vigilant for signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses. If warning signs are acted upon and body cooling rapidly administered, serious heat illness can be avoided. If heat stroke is suspected, rapid body cooling by immersion or soaking in cold water or ice water should be initiated. | Robert Carter III Samuel N.Cheuvront Michael N.Sawka | 2007 | 中国运动医学杂志2007,26,6: | 1 |

| 15 | Retinoid X receptor α downregulation is required for tail and caudal spinal cord regeneration in the adult newt显示文摘Some adult vertebrate species, such as newts, axolotls and zebrafish, have the ability to regenerate their central nervous system(CNS).However, the factors that establish a permissive CNS environment for correct morphological and functional regeneration in these species are not well understood.Recent evidence supports a role for retinoid signaling in the intrinsic ability of neurons,in these regeneration-competent species,to regrow after CNS injury.Previously,we demonstrated that a specific retinoic acid receptor(RAR)subtype,RARβ,mediates the effects of endogenous retinoic acid(RA)on neuronal growth and guidance in the adult newt CNS after injury. Here,we now examine the expression of the retinoid X receptor RXRα(a potential heterodimeric transcriptional regulator with RARβ),in newt tail and spinal cord regeneration. We show that at 21 days post-amputation(dpa),RXRαis expressed at temporally distinct periods and in non-overlapping spatial domains compared to RARβ.Whereas RARβprotein levels increase,RXRαproteins level decrease by 21 dpa.A selective agonist for RXR,SR11237,prevents both this downregulation of RXRαand upregulation of RARβand inhibits tail and caudal spinal cord regeneration. Moreover, treatment with a selective antagonist for RARβ,LE135,inhibits regeneration with the same morphological consequences as treatment with SR11237.Interestingly,LE135 treatment also inhibits the normal downregulation of RXRαin tail and spinal cord tissues at 21 dpa. These results reveal a previously unidentified, indirect regulatory feedback loop between these two receptor subtypes in regulating the regeneration of tail and spinal cord tissues in this regeneration-competent newt. | Sarah E.Walker Rachel Nottrodt Lucas Maddalena Christopher Carter Gaynor E.Spencer Robert L.Carlone | 2018 | Neural Regeneration Research2018,13,6: | 1 |
