| 1 | Infected pancreatic necrosis: Not necessarily a late event in acute pancreatitis显示文摘It is widely believed that infection of pancreatic necrosis is a late event in the natural course of acute pancreatitis. This paper discusses the available data on the timing of pancreatic infection. It appears that infected pancreatic necrosis occurs early in almost a quarter of patients. This has practical implications for the type, timing and duration of preventive strategies used in these patients. There are also implications for the classification of severity in patients with acute pancreatitis. Given that the main determinants of severity are both local and systemic complications and that they can occur both early and late in the course of acute pancreatitis, the classification of severity should be based on their presence or absence rather than on when they occur. | 3 | Interleukin-1βinduces human cementoblasts to support osteoclastogenesis显示文摘Injury of the periodontium followed by inflammatory response often leads to root resorption. Resorption is accomplished by osteoclasts and their generation may depend on an interaction with the cells in direct contact with the root, the cementoblasts.Our study aimed to investigate the role of human cementoblasts in the formation of osteoclasts and the effect of interleukin(IL)-1β hereupon. Extracted teeth from healthy volunteers were subjected to sequential digestion by type I collagenase and trypsin.The effect of enzymatic digestion on the presence of cells on the root surface was analyzed by histology. Gene expression of primary human cementoblasts(p HCB) was compared with a human cementoblast cell line(HCEM). The p HCBs were analyzed for their expression of IL-1 receptors as well as of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand(RANKL) and osteoprotegerin(OPG). In a co-culture system consisting of osteoclast precursors(blood monocytes) and p HCBs, the formation of osteoclasts and their resorptive activity was assessed by osteo-assay and ivory slices. The cells obtained after a 120 min enzyme digestion expressed the highest level of bone sialoprotein, similar to that of HCEM. This fraction of isolated cells also shared a similar expression pattern of IL-1 receptors(IL1-R1 and IL1-R2). Treatment with IL-1β potently upregulated RANKL expression but not of OPG. p HCBs were shown to induce the formation of functional osteoclasts. This capacity was significantly stimulated by pretreating the p HCBs with IL-1β prior to their co-culture with human blood monocytes. Our study demonstrated that cementoblasts have the capacity to induce osteoclastogenesis, a capacity strongly promoted by IL-1β. | 8 | Mosquito larvicidal properties of Orthosiphon thymiflorus(Roth)Sleesen.(Family:Labiatae)against mosquito vectors,Anopheles stephensi,Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti(Diptera:Culicidae)显示文摘Objective:To determine the mosquito larvicidal activities of hexane,chloroform,ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol leaf extract of Orthosiphon thymiflorus(O.thymiflorus) against Anopheles stephensi(An.stephensi),Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx.quinquefasciatus) and Aedes aegypti (Ae.aegypti).Methods:The larvicidal activity was assayed against three mosquito species at various concentrations ranging from(50-450 ppm) under the laboratory conditions.The LC50 and LC90value of the O.thymiflorus leaf extract was determined by Probit analysis.Results:The LC50 values of hexane,chloroform,ethyl acetate,acetone and methanol extract of O.thymiflorus third instar larvae of An.stephensi were LC50= 201.39,178.76,158.06,139.22 and 118.74 ppm; Cx.quinquefasciatus were LC50=228.13,209.72.183.35,163.55 and 149.96 ppm and Ae.aegypti were LC50=215.65,197.91,175.05,154.80 and 137.26 ppm,respectively.Maximum larvicidal activity was observed in the methanolic extract followed by acetone,ethyl acetate chloroform and hexane extract.The larval mortality was observed after 24 h exposure.No mortality was observed in control.Conclusions:The present results suggest that the effective plant crude extracts have potential to be used as an ideal eco-friendly approach for the control of mosquito vectors.This study provides the first report on the larvicidal activity of this plant crude solvent extract of against An.stephensi,Cx.quinquefasciatus and Ae.aegypti mosquitoes. | K Kovendan K Murugan S Vincent Donald R Barnard | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,4: | 2 |
| 9 | Transposon mouse models to elucidate the genetic mechanisms of hepatitis B viral induced hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘The major type of human liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), and there are currently many risk factors that contribute to this deadly disease. The majority of HCC occurrences are associated with chronic hepatitis viral infection, and hepatitis B viral(HBV) infection is currently a major health problem in Eastern Asia. Elucidating the genetic mechanisms associated with HBV-induced HCC has been difficult due to the heterogeneity and genetic complexity associated with this disease. A repertoire of animal models has been broadly used to study the pathophysiology and to develop potential treatment regimens for HBVassociated HCC. The use of these animal models has provided valuable genetic information and has been an important contributor to uncovering the factors involved in liver malignant transformation, invasion and metastasis. Recently, transposon-based mouse models are becoming more widely used in liver cancer research to interrogate the genome by forward genetics and also used to validate genes rapidly in a reverse genetic manner. Importantly, these transposon-based rapid reverse genetic mouse models could become crucial in testing potential therapeutic agents before proceeding to clinical trials in human. | 15 | Atrophy of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is associated with poor performance in verbal fluency in elderly poststroke women显示文摘This study aimed to investigate the association between atrophy in the prefrontal cortex with executive function and verbal fluency in elderly male and female patients poststroke.Thirty elderly female patients with non-aphasic ischemic stroke aged ≥ 60 years and 30 age-matched non-aphasic male patients with ischemic stroke were recruited.Automatic magnetic resonance imaging segmentation was used to assess the volume of the whole prefrontal cortex,along with its subdivisions:anterior cingulate cortex,orbitofrontal cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.The Semantic Verbal Fluency Test was administered at 3 and 15 months poststroke.At 3 months poststroke,left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex volume was significantly correlated with Verbal Fluency Test score in female patients only(partial coefficient = 0.453,P = 0.045),after controlling for age,education,diabetes,neurological deficit,white matter lesions volume,as well as the location and volume of infarcts.At 15 months poststroke,there remained a significant association between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex volume and Verbal Fluency Test(partial coefficient = 0.661,P = 0.001) and between the left prefrontal cortex volume and Verbal Fluency Test(partial coefficient = 0.573,P = 0.004) in female patients after the same adjustments.These findings indicate that atrophy of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex contributes to the impairment of verbal fluency in elderly female patients with stroke.Sex differences may be present in the neuropsychological mechanisms of verbal fluency impairment in patients with stroke. | Yang-Kun Chen Wei-Min Xiao Defeng Wang Lin Shi Winnie CW Chu Vincent CT Mok Ka Sing Wong Gabor S Ungvari Wai Kwong Tang | 2013 | Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,4: | 2 |

| 19 | Effect of low temperature in the development cycle of Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera, Calliphoridae): implications for the minimum postmortem interval estimation显示文摘Knowledge of necrophagous insects' developmental data is necessary for the forensic entomologist to estimate a reliable minimum postmortem interval (PMImin).Among the most represented necrophagous species,Lucilia sericata (Diptera,Calliphoridae) is particularly interesting.It is regularly identified in samples,with a predominance in summer,and is commonly used by analysts of our entomology department (Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale) to estimate the PMImin with the accumulated degree days (ADD) method.This method requires the mathematical lower thermal threshold to be known.This value dictates the quality of the applied ADD method but cannot be considered as fixed,especially when insect development occurs at temperatures close to the biological threshold.In such conditions,it is necessary to study the influence of such temperatures on development rate,as well as the consequences of estimating the period of first oviposition on cadavers,when using the ADD method.Seven replicate rearings were conducted at six different temperatures: 30 ℃,24 ℃,18 ℃,15 ℃,12 ℃ and 10 ℃.Time of development and time of emergence were recorded.The effect of low temperature on the development cycle and the reliability of the ADD method under this entire temperature spectrum were studied using different linear regression models.Calculated durations of total insect time development and experimental rearing duration were then compared.A global linear model cannot be used on the whole temperature spectrum experienced by L.sericata without resulting in an overestimation at some temperatures.We found a combination of two linear regression models to be suitable for the estimation of the total development time,depending on the temperature experienced by L.sericata.This approach allowed us to obtain a variation lower than 2% at 12 ℃ and 10 ℃ between the calculated duration and experimental duration of development.In comparison,the results obtained with a global model show a variation higher than 3% at 12 ℃ and 10%at 10℃. | Laetitia Cervantès Laurent Dourel Emmanuel Gaudry Thierry Pasquerault Benoit Vincent | 2018 | Forensic Sciences Research2018,3,1: | 2 |
