4Inocula selection in microbial fuel cells based on anodic biofilm abundance of Geobacter sulfurreducens显示文摘Microbial fuel cells(MFCs)rely on microbial conversion of organic substrates to electricity.The optimal performance depends on the establishment of a microbial community rich in electrogenic bacteria.Usually this microbial community is established from inoculation of the MFC anode chamber with naturally occurring mixed inocula.In this study,the electrochemical performance of MFCs and microbial community evolution were evaluated for three inocula including domestic wastewater(DW),lake sediment(LS)and biogas sludge(BS)with varying substrate loading(L_(sub))and external resistance(R_(ext))on the MFC.The electrogenic bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens was identified in all inocula and its abundance during MFC operation was positively linked to the MFC performance.The LS inoculated MFCs showed highest abundance(18% ± 1%)of G.sulfurreducens,maximum current density [I_(max)=(690 ± 30)m A·m^(-2)] and coulombic efficiency(CE = 29% ± 1%)with acetate as the substrate.Imaxand CE increased to(1780 ± 30)m A·m^(-2)and 58% ± 1%,respectively,after decreasing the R_(ext) from 1000 Ω to 200 Ω,which also correlated to a higher abundance of G.sulfurreducens(21% ± 0.7%)on the MFC anodic biofilm.The data obtained contribute to understanding the microbial community response to Lsub and R_(ext)for optimizing electricity generation in MFCs.Guotao Sun Diogo de Sacadura Rodrigues Anders Thygesen Geoffrey Daniel Dinesh Fernando Anne S.Meyer 2016Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2016,24,3:1
5Diversity,endemism and conservation of the freshwater crabs of China(Brachyura:Potamidae and Gecarcinucidae)显示文摘China lies at the heart of the global center of freshwater crab diversity in tropical Asia,where the 2 most diverse families occur:Potamidae(505 species,95 genera)and Gecarcinucidae(344 species,59 genera).China stands out as the country with the highest species richness of freshwater crabs globally.Its fauna comprises 243 species in 37 genera and in 2 families,and species discovery is still progressing at a rapid pace.The vast majority of the species are distributed in southwest,south central and eastern China in the Oriental zoogeographical region.China also stands out as having a highly endemic freshwater crab fauna at the species level(96%)and at the genus level(78%).Although the recent International Union for the Conservation of Nature(IUCN)red list conservation assessment found only 6 out of 228 species(2%)to be threatened(5 potamids and 1 gecarcinucid),the majority(more than 75%)of Chinese species are regarded as data deficient,so the number of threatened species is likely to be a serious underestimate.Threats from increasing habitat destruction and pollution are a major concern due to the rapidly growing economy and massive developments taking place in China.There is therefore an urgent need for increased species exploration and for the development of a conservation strategy for China’s threatened(and potentially threatened)endemic freshwater crab species.Neil CUMBERLIDGE Peter K.L.NG Darren C.J.YEO Tohru NARUSE Kirstin S.MEYER Lara J.ESSER 2011Integrative Zoology2011,6,1:0

7Investigation of normal,lateral,and oblique impact of microscale projectiles into unidirectional glass/epoxy composites显示文摘Spacesuits and spacecraft must endure high velocity impacts from micrometeoroids. This work considers the impact of 100 μm diameter projectiles into composite targets at velocities from 0.5 km/s to 2 km/s.This work begins by presenting an energy-based theoretical model relating depth of penetration(Do P)and impact force to impact velocity, characteristic time, and threshold velocity and force. Next, this work compares numerical simulations of normal impact on composites to the theoretical model. Numerical simulations are conducted with LS-DYNA and the well-known composite model, MAT-162. The numerical models consider unidirectional S2-glass fiber reinforced SC-15 epoxy composite laminates. The numerical model shows good correlation with the theoretical model. The numerical model also investigates lateral impact, parallel to the fiber direction, and oblique impact at angles from 30°to 82.5°.This work decomposes oblique impact into normal and lateral components, and compares them with normal and lateral impact results. The results show good correlation of the normal component of oblique results with the theoretical model. This numerical and theoretical study focuses on Do P, velocity, and penetration resistance force as functions of time. The theoretical model and numerical simulations are used to determine new Do P parameters: characteristic time of depth of penetration and threshold impact velocity.
