9Modeling Size-number Distributions of Seeds for Use in Soil Bank Studies显示文摘Knowledge of soil seed banks is essential to understand the dynamics of plant populations and communities and would greatly benefit from the integration of existing knowledge on ecological correlations of seed size and shape. The present study aims to establish a feasible and meaningful method to describe size-number distributions of seeds in multi-species situations. For that purpose,size-number distributions of seeds with known length,width and thickness were determined by sequential sieving. The most appropriate combination of sieves and seeds dimensions was established,and the adequacy of the power function and the Weibull model to describe size-number distributions of spherical,non-spherical,and all seeds was investigated. We found that the geometric mean of seed length,width and thickness was the most adequate size estimator,providing shape-independent measures of seeds volume directly related to sieves mesh side,and that both the power function and the Weibull model provide high quality descriptions of size-number distributions of spherical,non-spherical,and all seeds. We also found that,in spite of its slightly lower accuracy,the power function is,at this stage,a more trustworthy model to characterize size-number distributions of seeds in soil banks because in some Weibull equations the estimates of the scale parameter were not acceptable.Hugo Casco Alexandra Soveral Dias Luís Silva Dias 2008Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2008,50,5:0
10Immunological mechanisms of fecal microbiota transplantation in recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection显示文摘Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)is a successful method for treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile(C.difficile)infection(rCDI)with around 90%efficacy.Due to the relative simplicity of this approach,it is being widely used and currently,thousands of patients have been treated with FMT worldwide.Nonetheless,the mechanisms underlying its effects are just beginning to be understood.Data indicate that FMT effectiveness is due to a combination of microbiological direct mechanisms against C.difficile,but also through indirect mechanisms including the production of microbiota-derived metabolites as secondary bile acids and short chain fatty acids.Moreover,the modulation of the strong inflammatory response triggered by C.difficile after FMT seems to rely on a pivotal role of regulatory T cells,which would be responsible for the reduction of several cells and soluble inflammatory mediators,ensuing normalization of the intestinal mucosal immune system.In this minireview,we analyze recent advances in these immunological aspects associated with the efficacy of FMT.Lucas F Soveral Gabriela G Korczaguin Pedro S Schmidt Isabel S Nunes Camilo Fernandes Carlos R Zarate-Blades 2022World Journal of Gastroenterology2022,28,33:0
