1Toxicity of cadmium and lead on tropical midge larvae,Chironomus kiiensis Tokunaga and Chironomus javanus Kieffer(Diptera:Chironomidae)显示文摘Objective:To investigate the acute toxicity of cadmium and lead on larvae of two tropical Chironomid species,Chironomus kiiensis(C.kiiensis) Tokunaga and Chironomus javanus(C. javanus) Kieffer.Methods:Different larval instars(first-fourth) were exposed using a sialic non-replacement testing procedures to various concentrations of cadmium and lead.Results: In general,younger larvae(first and second instars) of both species were more sensitive to both metals than older larvae(third and forth instars).The toxic effects of the metals on C.kiiensis and C. javanus were influenced by the age of the larvae(first to fourth instars),types of metals(cadmium or lead) and duration of larval exposure(24,48,72 and 96 h) to the metals.Conclusions:Cadmium was more toxic to the chironomids than lead and C.javanus was significantly more sensitive to both metals than C.kiiensis(P<0.05).Warrin Ebau Che Salmah Md Rawi Zubir Din Salman Abdo Al-Shami 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,8:5
2Distribution of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) in polluted rivers of the Juru River Basin, Penang, Malaysia显示文摘The influence of physical and chemical parameters on the abundance and diversity of chironomids was studied in six rivers with moderate to highly polluted water in the Juru River Basin. The rivers: Ceruk Tok Kun (CTKR) as reference site, and polluted rivers of Pasir (PR), Juru (JR), Permatang Rawa (PRR), Ara (AR) and Kilang Ubi (KUR) were sampled over a period of five months (November 2007-March 2008). Nine chirnomid species: Chironimus kiiensis, C. javanus, Polypedilum trigonus, Microchironomus sp., Dicrotendipes sp., Tanytarsus formosanus, Clinotanypus sp., Tanypus punctipennis and Fittkauimyia sp. were identified. Assessment of their relationships with several environmental parameters was performed using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Tanytarsus formosanus was the most dominant in the relatively clean CTKR and moderately polluted JR with mean densities of 19.66 and 25.32 m 2 , respectively while C. kiiensis was abundant in more polluted rivers. Tanytarsus formosanus, Dicrotendipes sp. and Microchironomus sp. were grouped under moderate to high water temperature, total organic matter (TOM), total suspended solids (TSS), velocity, pH, phosphates and sulphates. However, Tanypus punctipennis, Fittkauimyia sp., and Clinotanypus sp. were associated with high contents of river sediment such as TOM, Zn and Mn and water ammonium-N and nitrate-N and they were associated with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) content in the water. Chironomus kiiensis, C. javanus and P. trigonus showed positive relationships with TOM, ammonium-N and nitrate-N as well as trace metals of Zn, Cu and Mn. These three species could be considered as tolerant species since they have the ability to survive in extreme environmental conditions with low DO and high concentrations of pollutants. Based on the water parameter scores in all rivers, the highest diversity of chironomid larvae was reported in CTKR. With higher concentrations of organic and/or inorganic pollutants as reported in PPR, KUR and AR, the chironomid larval diversity decreased, and the abundance of tolerant species, mainly Chironomus spp., increased.Salman A. 3Glutathione (GSH) improves sperm quality and testicular morphology in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice显示文摘Diabetes mellitus(DM)is known to cause reproductive impairment.In men,it has been linked to altered sperm quality and testicular damage.Oxidative stress(OS)plays a pivotal role in the development of DM complications.Glutathione(GSH)is a part of a nonenzymatic antioxidant defense system that protects lipid,protein,and nucleic acids from oxidative damage.However,the protective effects of exogenous GSH on the male reproductive system have not been comprehensively examined.This study determined the impact of GSH supplementation in ameliorating the adverse effect of type 1 DM on sperm quality and the seminiferous tubules of diabetic C57BL/6NTac mice.GSH at the doses of 15 mg kg^(-1)and 30 mg kg^(-1)was given intraperitoneally to mice weekly for 6 consecutive weeks.The mice were then weighed,euthanized,and had their reproductive organs excised.The diabetic(D Group)showed significant impairment of sperm quality and testicular histology compared with the nondiabetic(ND Group).Diameters of the seminiferous lumen in diabetic mice treated with 15 mg kg^(-1) GSH(DGSH15)were decreased compared with the D Group.Sperm motility was also significantly increased in the DGSH15 Group.Improvement in testicular morphology might be an early indication of the protective roles played by the exogenous GSH in protecting sperm quality from effects of untreated type 1 DM or diabetic complications.Further investigation using different doses and different routes of GSH is necessary to confirm this suggestion.Fathiah Abdullah Mohamed Noor Khan Nor-Ashikin Renu Agarwal Yuhaniza Shafinie Kamsani Mastura Abd Malek Nor Salmah Bakar Aqila-Akmal Mohammad Kamal Mimi-Sophia Sarbandi Nor-Shahida Abdul Rahman Nurul Huda Musa 2021Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,3:3
4The biology and demographic parameters of Aedes albopictus in northern peninsular Malaysia显示文摘Objective:To generate life table characteristics for the dengue vector Aedes albopictus(A. albopictus) under uncontrolled conditions,incorporating both the aquatic and the adult stages. Methods:Ten females derived from wild pupae were allowed to fully blood-feed on restrained mice.774 eggs were hatched in seasoned water.F1 larvae were followed for development until their F2 counterparts emerged as adults.Some population parameters were monitored(Fl) or estimated(F2).Results:A.albopictus exhibited increased fecundity and egg hatch success. 13DISTRIBUTION OF ODONATA (INSECTA) IN VARIOUS ECOSYSTEMS IN NORTHERN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA显示文摘Odonata larvae and adults were collected from fourteen sites of various habitats including rivers, rice fields, mountain streams, freshwater and peat swamps, oil palm, sugarcane and rubber plantations and lake. Out of 51species recorded, Libellulidae made up the most dominant of 10 families followed by Gomphidae and Coenagrionidae.Other families were less common. Riverine and stream ecosystems were the most diverse, both with six families and 19 and 13 species respectively. In the rice fields, Libellulidae and Coenagrionidae were represented by 17 and seven species respectively. The poorest fauna of Odonata was recorded from a lake system. A few of libellulids were found to be pollution tolerant and widespread in distribution. 15Seasonal Changes in Mayfly Communities and Abundance in Relation to Water Physicochemistry in Two Rivers at Different Elevations in Northern Peninsular Malaysia显示文摘A field study was performed at rivers in Gunung Jerai forest reserve(Kedah,Malaysia) to assess seasonal changes in mayfly community structure and abundance in relation to altitude and water physicochemistry.Rivers at lower(Batu Hampar River) and higher(Teroi River) elevations were visited through dry and wet seasons in September 2007 to August 2008.Monthly visits were made to 20 sites on each river,and water and aquatic insects were sampled using D-pond aquatic nets.Water was warmer,more acid,and more turbid in Teroi River during wet season.Ammonia was the only nutrient exhibiting significant seasonal variations(greater during wet season).Chemical oxygen demand content was higher in Teroi River where biochemical oxygen demand content was low during wet season.Species richness was higher in Batu Hampar River,but displayed seasonal variations only in Teroi River.Among the eight families encountered,Baetidae was the commonest.Baetid abundance was usually high during wet season,and those belonging to the dominant genus(Baetis) were more abundant in Teroi River.Heptageniidae was the second commonest family;its predominant genus,Thalerospyrus was more abundant in Teroi River during dry season.Caenidae,Leptophlebiidae and Oligoneuriidae were only found in Batu Hampar River where their abundances peaked during dry season,i.e.,Habrophlebiodes sp.and Isonychia sp.Ephemerellidae and Teloganodidae occurred only in Teroi River,with the first found only during dry season.Mayflies were recorded under very distinct physicochemical conditions,illustrating their potential usefulness for assessing water quality.Caenids,leptophlebids,oligoneurids ephemerellids and teloganodids seem to be particularly sensitive to temperature,acidity,turbidity,chemical oxygen demand and biochemical oxygen demand,parameters that varied with river altitude.Suhaila Abdul Hamid Mohd Ravi Che Salmah Hamady Dieng Abu Hassan Ahmad Tomomitsu Satho Fumio Miake 2011湿地科学2011,9,3:1
