| 1 | Efficient unidirectional polarization-controlled excitation of surface plasmon polaritons显示文摘Efficient excitation of surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)remains one of the most challenging issues in areas of plasmonics related to information communication technologies.In particular,combining high SPP excitation efficiency and acceptance of any polarization of incident light appeared to be impossible to attain due to the polarized nature of SPPs.Here we demonstrate plasmonic couplers that represent arrays of gap SPP resonators producing upon reflection two orthogonal phase gradients in respective linear polarizations of incident radiation.These couplers are thereby capable of efficiently converting incident radiation with arbitrary polarization into SPPs that propagate in orthogonal directions dictated by the phase gradients.Fabricated couplers operate at telecom wavelengths and feature the coupling efficiency of,25%for either of two linear polarizations of incident radiation and directivity of SPP excitation exceeding 100.We further demonstrate that an individual wavelength-sized unit cell,representing a meta-scatterer,can also be used for efficient and polarization sensitive SPP excitation in compact plasmonics circuits. | Anders Pors Michael G Nielsen Thomas Bernardin Jean-Claude Weeber Sergey I Bozhevolnyi | 2014 | Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1: | 11 |
| 2 | High-fidelity multimode fibre-based endoscopy for deep brain in vivo imaging显示文摘Progress in neuroscience relies on new techniques for investigating the complex dynamics of neuronal networks.An ongoing challenge is to achieve minimally invasive and high-resolution observations of neuronal activity in vivo inside deep brain areas.Recently introduced methods for holographic control of light propagation in complex media enable the use of a hair-thin multimode optical fibre as an ultranarrow imaging tool.Compared to endoscopes based on graded-index lenses or fibre bundles,this new approach offers a footprint reduction exceeding an order of magnitude,combined with a significant enhancement in resolution.We designed a compact and high-speed system for fluorescent imaging at the tip of a fibre,achieving a resolution of 1.18±0.04μm across a 50-μm field of view,yielding 7-kilopixel images at a rate of 3.5 frames/s.Furthermore,we demonstrate in vivo observations of cell bodies and processes of inhibitory neurons within deep layers of the visual cortex and hippocampus of anaesthetised mice.This study paves the way for modern microscopy to be applied deep inside tissues of living animal models while exerting a minimal impact on their structural and functional properties. | Sergey Turtaev Ivo T.Leite Tristan Altwegg-Boussac Janelle M.P.Pakan Nathalie L.Rochefort Tomáš Čižmár | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 8 |
| 3 | Bifunctional gap-plasmon metasurfaces for visible light: polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon excitation and beam steering at normal incidence显示文摘Integration of multiple diversified functionalities into a single,planar and ultra-compact device has become an emerging research area with fascinating possibilities for realization of very dense integration and miniaturization in photonics that requires addressing formidable challenges,particularly for operation in the visible range.Here we design,fabricate and experimentally demonstrate bifunctional gap-plasmon metasurfaces for visible light,allowing for simultaneous polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon polariton(SPP)excitation and beam steering at normal incidence.The designed bifunctional metasurfaces,consisting of anisotropic gap-plasmon resonator arrays,produce two different linear phase gradients along the same direction for respective linear polarizations of incident light,resulting in distinctly different functionalities realized by the same metasurface.The proof-of-concept fabricated metasurfaces exhibit efficient(425%on average)unidirectional(extinction ratio 420 dB)SPP excitation within the wavelength range of 600–650 nm when illuminated with normally incident light polarized in the direction of the phase gradient.At the same time,broadband(580–700 nm)beam steering(30.6°–37.9°)is realized when normally incident light is polarized perpendicularly to the phase gradient direction.The bifunctional metasurfaces developed in this study can enable advanced research and applications related to other distinct functionalities for photonics integration. | Fei Ding Rucha Deshpande Sergey I Bozhevolnyi | 2017 | Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Linagliptin alleviates fatty liver disease in diabetic db/db mice显示文摘AIM To study the effects of linagliptin on the structural signs of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) in db/db mice. METHODS Male diabetic db /db mice(BKS.Cg-Dock7m+/+Leprdb/J) aged 10 wk received the dipeptidyl peptidase 4(DPP4) inhibitor linagliptin(10 mg/kg) or saline as a placebo once per day by gavage for 8 wk. Intact db/db mice served as controls. Structural changes in the liver were analyzed from light and electron microscopic images of sections from intact, placebo-treated and linagliptin-treated animals. We estimated the changes in hepatocytes, sinusoidal cells, liver microvasculature and lymphatic roots. Hepatic staining for lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor-1(LYVE-1) was assessed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS In 18-wk-old diabetic mice, liver steatosis(predominantly microvesicular and mediovesicular steatosis) was accompanied by dilation of the roots of the lymphatic system, interlobular blood vessels and bile canaliculi. Compared to saline-treated mice, linagliptin-treated mice exhibited a reduction in the mean numeral densities of hepatocytes with lipid droplets(92.4% ± 1.7% vs 64.9% ± 5.8% per field of view, P = 0.0002) and a lower proportion of hepatocytes with a high density of lipid droplets(20.7% ± 3.6% vs 50.4% ± 3.1%, P = 0.0007). We observed heterogeneous hepatocytes and relatively preserved cell structures in the linagliptin group. Dilation of blood and lymphatic vessels, as well as ultrastructural changes in the hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, were alleviated by linagliptin treatment. In intact and placebo-treated mice, immunohistochemical staining for LYVE-1 was observed in the endothelial cells of interlobular lymphatic vessels and on the membranes of some endothelial sinusoidal cells. We observed an enlarged LYVE-1 reaction area in linagliptin-treated mice compared to intact and placebo-treated mice. The improvement in the structural parameters of the liver in linagliptin-treated mice was independent to changes in the plasma glucose levels.
