| 3 | Variation in growth potential between hybrid clones of Eucalyptus trees in eastern South Africa显示文摘Growth of commercial forestry is highly dependent on the availability of fast-growing planting materials. Consequently, the efficient utilization of fastgrowing plantations can greatly impact productivity. The objectives of this study were to evaluate variations in the growth potential of two clones and to estimate the average stem radial growth advantage of a fast-growing clone using data obtained from Sappi landholdings in eastern South Africa and a mixed modelling approach that permits the incorporation of covariance structure into the statistical model. During the first 2 years of growth, the stem radius of nine trees each of two clones was measured using dendrometer attached to the tree. A second-degree fractional polynomial model was chosen to show the functional relationship between stem radius and tree age. Growth of the two hybrid clones differed significantly. The Eucalyptus grandis×Eucalyptus urophylla clone grew faster than the E. grandis×camaldulensis clone, indicating better genetic potential for rapid growth and yield. This study can be considered as starting point to further compare the potential for rapid growth of several hybrid clones using the longitudinal data modelling approach. | Sileshi F. | 4 | Additive mixed models to study the effect of tree age and climatic factors on stem radial growth of Eucalyptus trees显示文摘The effect of tree age and climatic variables on stem radial growth of two hybrid clones of Eucalyptus was determined using longitudinal data from eastern South Africa.The stem radius of was measured weekly as the response variable.In addition to tree age,average weekly temperature,solar radiation,relative humidity and wind speed were simultaneously recorded with total rainfall at the site.An additive mixed effects model that incorporates a non-parametric smooth function was used.The results of the analysis indicate that the relationship between stem radius and each of the covariates can be explained by nonlinear functions.Models that account for the effect of clone and season together with their interaction in the parametric part of the additive mixed model were also fitted.The interaction between clone and season was not significant in all cases.For analyzing the joint effect all the covariates,additive mixed models that included two or more covariates were fitted.A significant effect of tree age was found in all cases.Although tree age was the key determinant of stem radial growth,weather variables also had a significant effect that was dependent on season. | Sileshi F.Melesse Temesgen Zewotir | 2020 | Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,2: | 1 |

| 18 | Status,approaches,and challenges of ecosystem services exploration in Ethiopia:A systematic review显示文摘Healthy ecosystems benefit humans in various forms,and ecosystem services(ESs)are the benefits reaped by people in various forms.However,increase in global human population and the resulting anthropogenic activities have led to rapid alterations in the composition,structure,and functions of the ecosystems as well as their degradation,increasing the losses associated with ES values.Livelihoods of people in several developing countries are highly dependent on their surrounding ecosystems and the services they provide.Therefore,management and reduction of ecosystem modification are required;especially in developing countries,this requirement is even more urgent.In Africa,ecosystem-based studies are limited and in still in their initial stages.Hence,this paper examines dynamic Ethiopian ESs in Africa from 2010 to 2019 based on a systematic bibliometric analysis of articles from the Scopus database using a set of standard criteria.In total,73 articles were published on Africa,including Ethiopia.The results reveal that the spatial distribution trend of ES studies is unevenly distributed,where most studies were conducted in the central highlands,followed by southwestern regions,with no studies on the western part of Ethiopia.Regarding service providing units(SPUs),the urban ecosystem and agroecosystem accounted for 25%and mixed ecosystems accounted for 20%.Furthermore,a total of 67 specific ESs were investigated by researchers,among which 81.25%of the specific ESs were classified into two ES categories.Provisioning ES(40.29%)dominated across all of the ES types while the cultural ES(5.97%)type has received little attention.Based on keywords,ESs were strongly linked to South Africa,Ethiopia,and biodiversity.In terms of the co-authorship network,authors from the United Kingdom,Italy,Burkina Faso,the Netherlands,and Germany actively collaborated with the Ethiopian researchers,and approximately 50%of the studies were aimed at estimating the value of the ESs through an applied mixed mode of ES study approaches.This review indicates that,due to land use land cover(LULC)changes from 1985 to 2015,approximately US$149.5 million or US$4.98 million annually in ES values were lost.Moreover,there is a critical need to extend ES studies to entire Ethiopia to capture the spatial and socioeconomic uniqueness of various ecosystems and focus more on multiple ES categories as a means to address ES synergies and provide unit-services to strengthen the relations among benefiting areas in Ethiopia. | Mekonnen Amberber Mekuria Argaw Gudina Legese Feyisa Sileshi Degefa | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Population,Resources and Environment2020,18,3: | 1 |
