| 2 | Huge undifferentiated carcinoma of the pancreas with osteoclast-like giant cells显示文摘Undifferentiated carcinoma of the pancreas with osteoclast-like giant cells(OGCs)is very rare,less than1%of all pancreatic malignancies,and shows worse prognosis than that of invasive ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.We present a case of en bloc resection for a huge undifferentiated carcinoma with OGCs that invaded the stomach and transverse mesocolon.A 67-year female was admitted for left upper quadrant pain and computed tomography demonstrated a mass occupying the lesser sac and abutting the stomach and pancreas.There were no distant metastases and the patient underwent subtotal pancreatectomy with splenectomy,total gastrectomy,and segmental resection of the transverse colon.Histopathological examination confirmed an 11 cm-sized undifferentiated carcinoma of the pancreas with OGCs.Immunohistochemical staining revealed reactivity with pan-cytokeratin in adenocarcinoma component,with vimentin in neoplastic multinucleated cells,with CD45/CD68 in OGCs,and with p53 in tumor cells,respectively.The patient had suffered from multiple bone metastases and survived9 mo after surgery.This case supports the ductal epithelial origin of undifferentiated carcinoma with OGCs and early diagnosis could result in favorable surgical outcomes.Investigations on the surgical role and prog-nostic factors need to be warranted in this tumor. | Sungho Jo | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,10: | 7 |
| 3 | Changes in the distribution of South Korean forest vegetation simulated using thermal gradient indices显示文摘To predict changes in South Korean vegetation distribution,the Warmth Index(WI) and the Minimum Temperature of the Coldest Month Index(MTCI) were used.Historical climate data of the past 30 years,from 1971 to 2000,was obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration.The Fifth-Generation National Center for Atmospheric Research(NCAR) /Penn State Mesoscale Model(MM5) was used as a source for future climatic data under the A1B scenario from the Special Report on Emission Scenario(SRES) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC).To simulate future vegetation distribution due to climate change,the optimal habitat ranges of Korean tree species were delimited by the thermal gradient indices,such as WI and MTCI.To categorize the Thermal Analogy Groups(TAGs) for the tree species,the WI and MTCI were orthogonally plotted on a two-dimensional grid map.The TAGs were then designated by the analogue composition of tree species belonging to the optimal WI and MTCI ranges.As a result of the clustering process,22 TAGs were generated to explain the forest vegetation distribution in Korea.The primary change in distribution for these TAGs will likely be in the shrinkage of areas for the TAGs related to Pinus densiflora and P.koraiensis,and in the expansion of the other TAG areas,mainly occupied by evergreen broad-leaved trees,such as Camellia japonica,Cyclobalanopsis glauca,and Schima superba.Using the TAGs to explain the effects of climate change on vegetation distribution on a more regional scale resulted in greater detail than previously used global or continental scale vegetation models. | CHOI Sungho LEE Woo-Kyun SON Yowhan YOO Seongjin LIM Jong-Hwan | 2010 | Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,7: | 6 |

| 9 | Signal processing for real-time identification of similar metals by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy显示文摘Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) is regarded as a promising technique for realtime sorting of scrap metals due to its capability of fast multi-elemental and in-air analysis. This work reports a method for signal processing which ensures high accuracy and high speed during similar metal sorting by LIBS. Similar metals such as aluminum alloys or stainless steel are characterized by nearly the same constituent elements with slight variations in elemental concentration depending on metal type. In the proposed method, the original data matrix is substantially reduced for fast processing by selecting new input variables(spectral lines) using the information for the constituent elements of similar metals. Specifically, principal component analysis(PCA) of full-spectra LIBS data was performed and then, based on the loading plots, the input variables of greater significance were selected in the order of higher weights for each constituent element. The results for the classification test with aluminum alloy, copper alloy,stainless steel and cast steel showed that the classification accuracy of the proposed method was nearly the same as that of full-spectra PCA, but the computation time was reduced by a factor of 20 or more.
