1Palestinian Refugees in Arab Countries and Their Impacts显示文摘Apart from West Bank and Gaza Strip,it is the Arab countries that most Palestinian refugees seek shelter in.These Palestinian refugees not only live a hard life, but also are put into an awkward situation. The denial of Palestinian refugees’right of return from the Israeli government, the economic weakness of Palestine and interest consideration of Arab countries contributed to the suspense of the solution to the Palestinian refugee problem. The presence and continuation of the problem have great impacts on the nation and state-building of Palestine and those Arab countries sheltering the Palestinian refugees. The final solution depends on the support from Arab countries.Tianshe Chen 2009Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies2009,3,3:0
2Exploration of the Hamas Suicide Attacks显示文摘The majority of the Hamas suicide attacks were carried out by young fellows. There were various motivations for the suicide attacks, including four social factors.Firstly, the miserable experiences of the Palestinian people became a hotbed for the suicide attackers.Secondly, the wide public sympathy of suicide attackers among the Palestinian people provided support for Hamas and the suicide attacks.Thirdly, the Palestinians turned to violence as a last resort from the disappointment of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. Finally, the Hamas suicide attacks had many religious factors. The Hamas suicide attack has two effects. One is that it causes the Palestinians and Israelis to fall into a vicious circle of’’violence to violence’’;however it also strengthens Hamas’s leading position as a resistant organization.Another is that it has caused the martyrdom culture to become popular in Palestine and inspired many Palestinians to join suicide attacks. In conclusion, the roots of the suicide attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian groups are found in Palestinian despair of the status quo and therefore, the Palestine issue has still not been resolved.CHEN Tianshe 2012Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies2012,6,2:0
3Four Points toward the Understanding of Egypt’s Foreign Relations显示文摘To understand and perceive the foreign relations of contemporary Egypt, the focus must be placed on four essential starting points, namely, geography, interests, the Cold War and the leaders of Egypt. As the basis of Egypt’s foreign relations, the geography of Egypt determines fundamental directions of Egypt’s foreign relations:the Arab world,Israel, great powers,Europe and Africa.Although safeguarding national interests is the fundamental starting point in Egypt’s foreign relations, the national interests of Egypt have different points of emphasis at different times.Additionally,Egypt still bears the mission of protecting the interests of the Arab nation. As the international background of Egypt’s foreign relations before the 1990s,the Cold War had great impact on many aspects of Egypt’s foreign relations;the United States and the Soviet Union were top priority in its foreign relations during that period of time.Under the unique political mechanism,Egyptian leaders have supreme power in foreign policy decision-making and Egypt’s foreign relations are branded with a mark of personal traits of Egyptian leaders.Despite the recent Egyptian political mutation, geography, interest and leaders are still the basic focus of external relations of Egypt,so Egyptian diplomatic pattern is unlikely to have dramatic changes.CHEN Tianshe 2011Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies2011,5,1:0
4Support or Hostility:the Relationship between Arab Countries and Hamas显示文摘Many Arab countries maintain some kind of relations with Hamas, offering financial, moral,or rhetorical support to it,out of consideration of protection and promotion over Arabic national interests.Their support has become important exogenous aid that Hamas could resort to.Among all the Arab countries,Jordan and Syria draw special attention from the outside world for their especially intimate relations with Hamas. However, many Arab countries do not like Hamas,or even have some hostilities to it.There are three reasons that can explain such a paradox:1)They are afraid that Hamas might stir up Islamic extremism inside their own countries;2)The extremist attitudes of Hamas have become a tremendous barrier obstructing the permanent resolution to the Israel-Arab problem;3)They are worrying about the strengthening of Iran.In the final analysis,no matter whether giving support or having hostility towards Hamas,Arab countries formulate their policies on the basis of an overall evaluation and contemplation over their own national interests.CHEN Tianshe 2010Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies2010,4,2:0
