2Ethnic difference of Helicobacter pylori gastritis: Korean and Japanese gastritis is characterized by male- and antrum-predominant acute foveolitis in comparison with American gastritis显示文摘AIM: To investigate the clinicopathological factors underlying the ethnic differences of Helicobacter pylori gastritis and cancer.METHODS: We analyzed clinicopathological parameters of gastric biopsies having H pylori infection that were randomly selected from different ethnic populations including 147 Americans, 149 Japanese, and 181 Koreans.RESULTS: Males were predominant in Japanese and Korean populations (77.9 and 67.4% respectively) in comparison with Americans (48.3%) (P<0.001). H pylori gastritis in Koreans and Japanese was characterized by the predominant antral involvement. In the antrum,neutrophilic infiltration into the proliferative zone of pit, i,e.acute foveolitis, was more frequent in Koreans (82%) than in Japanese (71%) (P<0.05) and Americans (61%) (P<0.001).Interstitial neutrophilic infiltration, intestinal metaplasia and atrophy were also frequent in Koreans and Japanese. In the body, the prevalence of acute foveolitis was not significantly different among the populations while chronic interstitial inflammation and lymphoid follicles were more pronounced in the body of Americans than in the body of others (P<0.01).CONCLUSION: The male-, and antrum-predominant Hpylori gastritis in Koreans and Japanese is compatible with the pattern of sex and topographical distribution of gastric cancer incidence. 3Stable femtosecond X-rays with tunable polarization from a laser-driven accelerator显示文摘Technology based on high-peak-power lasers has the potential to provide compact and intense radiation sources for a wide range of innovative applications.In particular,electrons that are accelerated in the wakefield of an intense laser pulse oscillate around the propagation axis and emit X-rays.This betatron source,which essentially reproduces the principle of a synchrotron at the millimeter scale,provides bright radiation with femtosecond duration and high spatial coherence.However,despite its unique features,the usability of the betatron source has been constrained by its poor control and stability.In this article,we demonstrate the reliable production of X-ray beams with tunable polarization.Using ionization-induced injection in a gas mixture,the orbits of the relativistic electrons emitting the radiation are reproducible and controlled.We observe that both the signal and beam profile fluctuations are significantly reduced and that the beam pointing varies by less than a tenth of the beam divergence.The polarization ratio reaches 80%,and the polarization axis can easily be rotated.We anticipate a broad impact of the source,as its unprecedented performance opens the way for new applications.Andreas Döpp Benoit Mahieu Agustin Lifschitz Cedric Thaury Antoine Doche Emilien Guillaume Gabriele Grittani Olle Lundh Martin Hansson Julien Gautier Michaela Kozlova Jean Philippe Goddet Pascal Rousseau Amar Tafzi Victor Malka Antoine Rousse Sebastien Corde Kim Ta Phuoc 2017Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1:2
4Engineered Biomimetic Platelet Membrane-Coated Nanoparticles Block Staphylococcus aureus Cytotoxicity and Protect Against Lethal Systemic Infection显示文摘Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)is a leading human pathogen capable of producing severe invasive infections such as bacteremia,sepsis,and endocarditis with high morbidity and mortality,exacerbated by the increasingly widespread antibiotic resistance exemplified by methicillin-resistant strains(MRSA).S.aureus pathogenesis is fueled by the secretion of toxins—such as the membrane-damaging pore-forming atoxin,which have diverse cellular targets including the epithelium,endothelium,leukocytes,and platelets.Here,we examine the use of human platelet membrane-coated nanoparticles(PNPs)as a biomimetic decoy strategy to neutralize S.aureus toxins and preserve host cell defense functions.The PNPs blocked platelet damage induced by S.aureus secreted toxins,thereby supporting platelet activation and bactericidal activity.Likewise,the PNPs blocked macrophage damage induced by S.aureus secreted toxins,thus supporting macrophage oxidative burst,nitric oxide production,and bactericidal activity,and diminishing MRSA-induced neutrophil extracellular trap release.In a mouse model of MRSA systemic infection,PNP administration reduced bacterial counts in the blood and protected against mortality.Taken together,the results from the present work provide a proof of principle of the therapeutic benefit of PNPs in toxin neutralization,cytoprotection,and increased host resistance to invasive S.aureus infection.Jwa-Kyung Kim Satoshi Uchiyama Hua Gong Alexandra Stream Liangfang Zhang Victor Nizet 2021Engineering2021,7,8:2
