2Systematic Assessment of Synthesized Tri-magnesium Phosphate Powders(Amorphous,Semi-crystalline and Crystalline) and Cements for Ceramic Bone Cement Applications显示文摘Magnesium phosphate cements have come under investigation in recent years for use as an alternative to calcium phosphate cements for bone void repair applications.Evidence indicates that magnesium phosphate cements obtain higher initial strengths after cement reaction and resorption in more clinically appropriate time frames than commercially available calcium phosphate cements.In this study,amorphous,partially amorphous and crystalline tri-magnesium phosphate powders were synthesized via an aqueous precipitation reaction with subsequent thermal treatment,and characterized using techniques such as X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.These materials were assessed for their functionality in cementing reaction with a 3.0 mol/L,pH 7.0 ammonium phosphate solution,including setting time and pH evolution in phosphate buffered saline solution.Results indicated that the amorphous and semi-crystalline tri-magnesium phosphate powders were highly reactive with the setting solution but resulted in mechanically weak cements,while the crystalline tri-magnesium phosphate powder reacted efficiently with the cement solution and were mechanically strong following the cement reaction.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses indicated significant changes in the phase composition and morphology of the cements following incubation in phosphate buffered saline.These were perceived to be detrimental to the integrity of the amorphous and semi-crystalline tri-magnesium phosphate derived cements but not to those created with fully crystalline tri-magnesium phosphate.The crystalline tri-magnesium phosphate material resulted in the most functional cement as this embodiment displayed the most clinically relevant setting time as well as the highest mechanical resilience and neutral pH during incubation in saline solution rendering them potentially viable as bone void fillers.Nicole Ostrowski Vidisha Sharma Abhijit Roy Prashant N.Kumta 2015Journal of Materials Science & Technology2015,31,5:3

5Sexual Dimorphism of Foramen Magnum between Two Different Groups of Indian Population: A Cross‑Sectional Cone‑Beam Computed Tomography Study显示文摘The foramen magnum (FM), being a vital landmark at the base of the skull, includes interests to many fields of medicine. Many authors haverecounted the usefulness of the FM in gender determination. The emphasis of this study is to evaluate the shape and dimensions of the FM among males and females and to establish its role in sexual dimorphism using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Furthermore, to evaluate the area and FM index (FMI) among males and females and finally to evaluate the differences in FM measurements if any in twodifferent regions of an Indian population. One hundred and ten CBCT scans (55 males and 55 females;age range, 20–80 years) were selectedfor this study. The sagittal diameter, transverse diameter, area, FMI, and circumference of FM were measured, and data were subjected to discriminant analysis for the evaluation of sexual dimorphism. The area of FM was the best discriminant parameter which was used to study the sexual dimorphism with an overall accuracy of 90.9%. 7A New Species of Euphlyctis (Amphibia, Anura, Dicroglossidae) from the West Coastal Plains of India显示文摘The genus Euphlyctis is widely distributed across Southwestern Arabian Peninsula into parts of Southeast Asia. Five of the seven known Euphlyctis species are found within the Indian subcontinent. Here, we describe a new species, Euphlyctis karaavali sp. nov. from South-west coast of India, which was discovered during surveys engaging citizens. This species was identified to be distinct based on molecular and morphological evidence. We provide a detailed description of this species along with its call description and compare it with closest congeners. Previous studies in the region had identified this species as E. hexadactylus but suggested the possibility of it being cryptic. Genetically E. karaavali sp. nov. is distinct from E. hexadactylus with a genetic divergence of 9.2%(12S and 16S) and shows a high divergence with E. kalasgramensis and E. ehrenbergii(13.04% each).
