| 1 | Evaluation of VEGF gene polymorphisms and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in Mexican population显示文摘● AIM: To assess if the included vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) polymorphisms rs3025035, rs3025021 and rs2010963 are associated to proliferative retinopathy in a Mexican population with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).● METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in adult individuals with T2 DM associated to proliferative retinopathy or non-proliferative retinopathy from Oct. 2014 to Jun. 2015 from the Retina Department of the Asociation to Prevent Blindness in Mexico. The selected patients were adults with a diagnosis of T2 DM ≥5y. All subjects had a comprehensive ocular examination and the classification of the retinopathy severity was made considering the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study(ETDRS) standardization protocols. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole fresh blood. All samples were genotyped by q PCR for selected VEGF polymorphisms. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was calculated by comparing Chi-square values between the expected and the observed values for genotype counts.● RESULTS: In total 142 individuals were enrolled, 71 individuals with T2 DM and associated proliferative retinopathy and 71 individuals with non-proliferative retinopathy. One-sided Fisher's exact test was performed for rs3025021[OR(95% CI)=0.44(0.08-2.2); P=0.25] and rs2010963 [OR(95% CI)=0.63(0.25-1.6); P=0.23]. The minor allelic frequencies obtained were 26% for rs3025021, 10% for rs3025035 and 61% for rs2010963. The pairwise linkage disequilibrium between the three SNP was assessed, and was as follows: rs3025021 vs rs3025035: D'=1.0, r^2=0.1043, P≤0.0001; rs3025021 vs rs2010963: D'=0.442, r^2=0.0446, P=0.149; rs3025035 vs rs2010963: D'=0.505, r^2=0.0214, P=0.142.● CONCLUSION: This is the first analysis involving VEGFA polymorphisms and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in a Mexican population. A major finding of the present study is that none of the polymorphisms studied was significantly associated with proliferative retinopathy. Based on these results, we can infer that different populations have different associations for the same polymorphisms. | Roberto Gonzalez-Salinas Maria C Garcia-Gutierrez Gerardo Garcia-Aguirre Virgilio Morales-Canton Raul Velez-Montoya Vidal R Soberon-Ventura Victoria Gonzalez Rodrigo Lechuga Pablo Garcia-Solis David G Garcia-Gutierrez Marco Vinicio Garcia-Solis Manuel Saenz de Viteri Juan C Solis-S | 2017 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,1: | 12 |
| 2 | Hepatitis B virus/hepatitis D virus epidemiology: Changes over time and possible future influence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic显示文摘Hepatitis D virus(HDV)is a defective liver-tropic virus that needs the helper function of hepatitis B virus(HBV)to infect humans and replicate.HDV is transmitted sexually or by a parenteral route,in co-infection with HBV or by super-infection in HBV chronic carriers.HDV infection causes acute hepatitis that may progress to a fulminant form(7%-14%by super-infection and 2%-3%by HBV/HDV co-infection)or to chronic hepatitis(90%by HDV super-infection and 2%-5%by HBV/HDV co-infection),frequently and rapidly progressing to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Peg-interferon alfa the only recommended therapy, clears HDV in only 10%-20%of cases and, consequently, new treatment strategies are being explored.HDV endemicity progressively decreased over the 50 years from the identification of the virus, due to improved population lifestyles and economic levels,to the use of HBV nuclei(t)side analogues to suppress HBV replication and to the application of universal HBV vaccination programs.Further changes are expected during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 pandemic, unfortunately towards increased endemicity due to the focus of healthcare towards coronavirus disease 2019 and the consequently lower possibility of screening and access to treatments, lower care for patients with severe liver diseases and a reduced impulse to the HBV vaccination policy. | Caterina Sagnelli Mariantonietta Pisaturo Caterina Curatolo Alessio Vinicio Codella Nicola Coppola Evangelista Sagnelli | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,42: | 3 |
| 3 | Deposition of litter and nutrients in leaves and twigs in different plant communities of northeastern Mexico显示文摘Studies on litterfall and decomposition provide estimations of decomposition rates of different ecosystems. This is key information to understanding ecosystem dynamics and changes in a scenario of global warming. The objective of this research was to assess litterfall production, the potential deposition of macro and micronutrients through leaf and twig fall as well as macronutrient—use efficiency in three forest ecosystems at different altitudes: a pine forest mixed with deciduous species(S1); a Quercus spp.forest(S2); and,a Tamaulipan thornscrub forest(S3).Total annual litterfall deposition was 594,742 and 533 g m^(-2) for S1,S2 and S3.Leaf litter was higher (68%) than twigs(18%),reproductive structures(8%) or miscellaneous material(6%).Micronutrient leaf deposition was higher for Fe followed by Mn,Zn and Cu.Macronutrient leaf deposition was higher for Ca followed by K,Mg and P.Even though P deposition in leaves and twigs was lower than other macronutrients, its nutrient use efficiency was higher than Ca,Mg or K.Altitude and species composition determine litter and nutrient deposition, with higher values at mid-altitudes(550 m).Altitude is an important factor to consider when analyzing litter production as well as nutrient deposition as shown in this study.Litter production and nutrient deposition are expected to change in a scenario of global warming. | Humberto González-Rodríguez Roque Gonzalo Ramírez-Lozano Israel Cantú-Silva Marco Vinicio Gómez-Meza Eduardo Estrada-Castillón José Ramón Arévalo | 2018 | Journal of Forestry Research2018,29,5: | 2 |

| 8 | Interaction network between frugivorous birds and zoochorous plants in cloud forest riparian strips immersed in anthropic landscapes显示文摘Worldwide, tropical montane cloud forest is one of the most important and biodiverse ecosystems;however,it is also one of those most threatened by anthropic activities. These activities lead to a fragmented, deforested landscape with narrow riparian forest strips immersed in an agricultural matrix dominated by pastures. Here,we characterize the interaction network between frugivorous birds and zoochorous plants in riparian strips of cloud forest in deforested landscapes of Central Veracruz,Mexico. To characterize the network of this mutualistic interaction,we estimated network-and species-level metrics using the Bipartite R package.Nestedness, modularity and robustness were used to describe network structure.Centrality measures of degree, closeness, betweenness centrality and their relative contribution to nestedness were used to determine the importance of each bird/plant species to the network’s structure. This interaction network has 24 species of birds and 30 species of plants, with low connectance(0.11),low nestedness(11.53),and intermediate but not significant modularity(0.49).The bird species most important to network stability were Chlorospingus flavopectus,Myadestes occidentalis, and Catharus mexicanus. The most important plants were Conostegia xalapensis,C.arborea, and Rubus ulmifolius.Network robustness varied from 0.36 to 0.86 and its stability is compromised when species of birds or plants with the highest values of centrality are removed, with plant removal more detrimental.Riparian strips of cloud forest crossing deforested areas maintain a relatively rich set of birds that disperse the seeds of many forest plants, thus they are crucial to the preservation of this mutualistic network in anthropic landscapes.Network stability is severely undermined by the loss of any of the few species—whether birds or plants—with high centrality values. The most important plants for this stability are pioneer tree and shrub species that provide food for several bird species, and they are also crucial to cloud forest regeneration.A worrisome finding is that some of the bird species most important to network stability are also among the most sought-after as ornamental birds by illegal collectors in the region. | Omar A.Hernández-Dávila Javier Laborde Vinicio J.Sosa Cecilia Díaz-Castelazo | 2022 | Avian Research2022,13,3: | 1 |
