Unravelling the complexity in achieving the 17 sustainable-development goals显示文摘It is now more than 3 years since the ratification of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development framework[1]but,according to the latest progress report, unless the rate of progress increases,it is challenging that all of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)will be achieved by 2030[2].With only 11 years remaining until the 2030 deadline,it has become imperative to develop a plan of action to enable the full agenda to be realized.Specifically, there is an urgent need for a holistic approach to clarify the interrelationships between the 17 SDGs,while also taking into account their complexity and their sometimes mutually reinforcing or conflicting nature.Trying to achieve these goals separately in succession is nonsensical, but pursuing them simultaneously is impractical[3].Bojie Fu Shuai Wang Junze Zhang Zengqian Hou Jinghai Li 2019National Science Review2019,6,3:32
Virtual experimentation through 3D full-loop simulation of a circulating fluidized bed显示文摘Eulerian granular multiphase model with a drag coefficient correction based on the energy-minimization multi-scale (EMMS) model was used to simulate a semi-industry scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB). Three-dimensional (3D), time-dependent simulation of a full-loop CFB revealed that the axial profiles of cross-sectionally averaged solid volume fraction, and the radial profiles of solid axial velocity and solid volume fraction were in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Based on this agreement, database derived from experiments not yet accomplished was replenished with such simulations, and fluid regime diagrams and pressure balance around the CFB loop were derived accordingly. This work presents an integrated viewpoint on CFB and unfolds a fresh paradigm for CFB modeling, which can be expected to help resolve certain issues long in dispute but hard for experiments.Nan Zhang Bona Lu Wei Wang Jinghai Li 2008Particuology2008,6,6:23

Focusing on the meso-scales of multi-scale phenomena-In search for a new paradigm in chemical engineering显示文摘To celebrate the 90th birthday of Professor Mooson Kwauk, who supervised the multi-scale research at this Institute in the last three decades,we dedicate this paper outlining our thoughts on this subject accumulated from our previous studies. In the process of developing, improving and extending the energyminimization multi-scale(EMMS)method,we have gradually recognized that meso-scales are critical to the understanding of the different kinds of multi-scale structures and systems. It is a common challenge not only for chemical engineering but also for almost all disciplines of science and engineering, due to its importance in bridging micro-and macro-behaviors and in displaying complexity and diversity. It is believed that there may exist a common law behind meso-scales of different problems, possibly even in different fields. Therefore,a breakthrough in the understanding of meso-scales will help materialize a revolutionary progress, with respect to modeling, computation and application.Jinghai Li Wei Ge Wei Wang Ning Yang 2010Particuology2010,8,6:16
Quasi-real-time simulation of rotating drum using discrete element method with parallel GPU computing显示文摘Real-time simulation of industrial equipment is a huge challenge nowadays. The high performance and fine-grained parallel computing provided by graphics processing units (GPUs) bring us closer to our goals. In this article, an industrial-scale rotating drum is simulated using simplified discrete element method (DEM) without consideration of the tangential components of contact force and particle rotation. A single GPU is used first to simulate a small model system with about 8000 particles in realtime, and the simulation is then scaled up to industrial scale using more than 200 GPUs in a 1D domain-decomposition parallelization mode. The overall speed is about 1/11 of the real-time. Optimization of the communication part of the parallel GPU codes can speed up the simulation further, indicating that such real-time simulations have not only methodological but also industrial implications in the near future.Ji Xu Huabiao Oi Xiaojian Fang Liqiang Lu Wei Ge Xiaowei Wang Ming xu Feiguo Chen xianfeng He Jinghai Li 2011Particuology2011,9,4:16
Commissioning progress of the FAST显示文摘The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope(FAST) was completed with its main structure installed on September 25, 2016, after which it entered the commissioning phase. This paper aims to introduce the commissioning progress of the FAST over the past two years. To improve its operational reliability and ensure effective observation time, FAST has been equipped with a real-time information system for the active reflector system and hierarchical commissioning scheme for the feed support system, which ultimately achieves safe operation of the two systems. For meeting the high-performance indices, a highprecision measurement system was set up based on the effective control methods that were implemented for the active reflector system and feed support system. Since the commissioning of the FAST, a low-frequency ultra-wideband receiver and 19-beam1.05-1.45 GHz receiver have been mainly used. Telescope efficiency, pointing accuracy, and system noise temperature were completely tested and ultimately achieved the acceptance indices of the telescope. The FAST has been in the process of national acceptance preparations and has begun to search for pulsars. In the future, it will still strive to improve its capabilities and expand its application prospects.Peng Jiang YouLing Yue HengQian Gan Rui Yao Hui Li GaoFeng Pan JingHai Sun DongJun Yu HongFei Liu NingYu Tang Lei Qian JiGuang Lu Jun Yan Bo Peng ShuXin Zhang QiMing Wang Qi Li Di Li 2019Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2019,62,5:11

Parallelizing of macro-scale pseudo-particle modeling for particle-fluid systems显示文摘A parallel algorithm suitable for simulating multi-sized particle systems and multi- phase fluid systems is proposed based on macro-scale pseudo-particle modeling (MaPPM). The algorithm employs space-decomposition of the computational load among the processing ele- ments (PEs) and multi-level cell-subdivision technique for particle indexing. In this algorithm, a 2D gas-solid system is simulated with the temporal variations of drags on solids, inter-phase slip velocities and solids concentration elaborately monitored. Analysis of the results shows that the algorithm is of good parallel efficiency and scalability, demonstrating the unique advantage of MaPPM in simulating complex flows.TANG Dexiang GE Wei WANG Xiaowei MA Jingsen GUO Li LI Jinghai 2004Science China Chemistry2004,47,5:6
Application of the Mole-8.5 supercomputer:Probing the whole influenza virion at the atomic level显示文摘Discrete computer simulations are quite helpful in understanding dynamic structures in complex systems.Recently, using the Mole-8.5 supercomputer and molecular dynamics simulations as a'computational microscope',we simulated the dynamic structure of a whole H1N1 influenza virion in solution for the first time at the atomic level. In total,300 million atoms in a periodic cube with an edge length of 148.5 nm were simulated.Using 288 low level hybrids with 1728 C2050 GPUs and a software package developed specifically for the hardware, the simulation executed 770 ps/d with an integration time step of 1 fs,and analyzed the dynamic structure. With the tremendous computational power of GPUs,efficient software packages for various hardware designs, and consistent physical models, more challenging applications will be carried out in the near future.XU Ji WANG XiaoWei HE XianFeng REN Ying GE Wei LI JingHai 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,20:5

Extending EMMS-based models to CFB boiler applications显示文摘Recently,EMMS-based models are being widely applied in simulations of high-throughput circulating fluidized beds(CFBs) with fine particles. Its use for low flux systems, such as CFB boiler(CFBB),still remains unexplored. In this work,it has been found that the original definition of cluster diameter in EMMS model is unsuitable for simulations of the CFB boiler with low solids flux.To remedy this,we propose a new model of cluster diameter. The EMMS-based drag model(EMMS/matrix model) with this revised cluster definition is validated through the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation of a CFB boiler.Bona Lu Nan Zhang Wei Wang Jinghai Li 2012Particuology2012,10,6:4

Unified stability condition for particulate and aggregative fluidization—Exploring energy dissipation with direct numerical simulation显示文摘Fully resolved simulations of particulate and aggregative fluidization systems are performed successfully with the so-called combined lattice Boltzmann method and time-driven hard-sphere model(LBM-TDHS).In this method, the discrete particle phase is described by time-driven hard-sphere model, and the governing equations of the continuous fluid phase are solved with lattice Boltzmann method.Particle-fluid coupling is implemented by immersed moving boundary method.Time averaged flow structure of the simulated results show the formation of core-annulus structure and sigmoid distribution of voidage in the axial direction, which are typical phenomena in fluidization systems.Combining the results of the simulation, the energy consumption N_(st)for suspending and transporting solids is calculated from the direct numerical simulation(DNS)of fluidization, and the stability criterion N_(st)/N_T=min proposed in EMMS/bubbling model is verified numerically.Furthermore the numerical results show that the value of N_(st)/N_T in particulate fluidization is much higher than that in aggregative fluidization, but N_(st)/N_T=min is effective for both particulate and aggregative fluidization.Min Wei Limin Wang Jinghai Li 2013Particuology2013,11,2:3
A stability condition for turbulence model:From EMMS model to EMMS-based turbulence model显示文摘The closure problem of turbulence is still a challenging issue in turbulence modeling. In this work,a stability condition is used to close turbulence.Specifically,we regard single-phase flow as a mixture of turbulent and non-turbulent fluids, separating the structure of turbulence.Subsequently, according to the picture of the turbulent eddy cascade, the energy contained in turbulent flow is decomposed into different parts and then quantified.A turbulence stability condition, similar to the principle of the energy-minimization multi-scale(EMMS) model for gas-solid systems,is formulated to close the dynamic constraint equations of turbulence, allowing the inhomogeneous structural parameters of turbulence to be optimized. We name this model as the 'EMMS-based turbulence model',and use it to construct the corresponding turbulent viscosity coefficient. To validate the EMMS-based turbulence model,it is used to simulate two classical benchmark problems,lid-driven cavity flow and turbulent flow with forced convection in an empty room. The numerical results show that the EMMS-based turbulence model improves the accuracy of turbulence modeling due to it considers the principle of compromise in competition between viscosity and inertia.Lin Zhang Xiaoping Qiu Limin Wang Jinghai Li 2014Particuology2014,12,5:3
