Summer atmospheric boundary layer structure in the hinterland of Taklimakan Desert, China显示文摘Understanding the characteristics of the structure of desert atmospheric boundary layer and its land surface process is of great importance to the simulations of regional weather and climate. To investigate the atmospheric boundary layer structure and its forming mechanism of Taklimakan Desert, and to improve the accuracy and precision of regional weather and climate simulations,we carried out a GPS radiosonde observation experiment in the hinterland of Taklimakan Desert from 25 June to 3 July,2015.Utilizing the densely observed sounding data,we analyzed the vertical structures of daytime convective boundary layer and nighttime stable boundary layer in summer over this region, and also discussed the impacts of sand-dust and precipitation events on the desert atmospheric boundary layer structure. In summer, the convective boundary layer in the hinterland of Taklimakan Desert developed profoundly and its maximum height could achieve 4,000 m;the stable boundary layer at nighttime was about 400–800-m thick and the residual mixing layer above it could achieve a thickness over 3,000 m.Sand-dust weather would damage the structures of nighttime stable boundary layer and daytime convective boundary layer, and the dust particle swarm can weak the solar radiation absorbed by the ground surface and further restrain the strong development of convective boundary layer in the daytime.Severe convective precipitation process can change the heat from the ground surface to the atmosphere in a very short time, and similarly can damage the structure of desert atmospheric boundary layer remarkably. Moreover, the height of atmospheric boundary layer was very low when raining. Our study verified the phenomenon that the atmospheric boundary layer with supernormal thickness exists over Taklimakan Desert in summer, which could provide a reference and scientific bases for the regional numerical models to better represent the desert atmospheric boundary layer structure. | WANG Minzhong WEI Wenshou HE Qing YANG Yuhui FAN Lei ZHANG Jiantao | 2016 | Journal of Arid Land2016,8,6: | 17
Temporal and spatial variation of atmospheric water vapor in the Taklimakan Desert and its surrounding areas显示文摘The study of the temporal and spatial variation of atmospheric water vapor has the important significance to show the response to climate change in the Taklimakan Desert. The series of monthly atmospheric water vapor from 1961 to 1998 are reconstructed using the observation data including the precipitation, ground water vapor pressure data over the period of 1961 to 2006 from 27 observation stations in its surrounding areas and meteorological data from the Tazhong station during 1999-2006. Then the relationship between atmospheric water vapor and ground vapor pressure is calculated and validated using the observation data for the period of 1976 to 2006 from 5 sounding stations (Hotan, Kuqa, Ruoqiang, Kashgar, and Minfeng). The temporal and spatial variation of atmospheric water vapor in the Taklimakan Desert and its surrounding areas is studied and then its distribution is generated. Results show that high value zone of atmospheric water vapor is mainly distributed in the northern Taklimakan Desert and the oasis-marginal belt of western desert and the value ranges from 14 to 15 mm. The low value center of atmospheric water vapor is in the hinterland of the desert and the value is only 7―8 mm. The annual variations of atmospheric water vapor show generally the increasing trend. How- ever, the variation of atmospheric water vapor in the surrounding areas and the hinterland of the desert is insignificant during 1961―1986. The atmospheric water vapor changes abruptly after 1986 and increases clearly in the two regions. The variation trend accords with that of the precipitation’s increasing significantly in southern Xinjiang for the recent 50 years. There is great error between the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data of atmospheric water vapor and real data in theTaklimakan Desert. | Qin Yang WenShou Wei Jun Li | 2008 | Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,S2: | 6

Effects of Meridional Sea Surface Temperature Changes on Stratospheric Temperature and Circulation显示文摘Using a state-of-the-art chemistry-climate model, we analyzed the atmospheric responses to increases in sea surface temperature(SST). The results showed that increases in SST and the SST meridional gradient could intensify the subtropical westerly jets and significantly weaken the northern polar vortex. In the model runs, global uniform SST increases produced a more significant impact on the southern stratosphere than the northern stratosphere, while SST gradient increases produced a more significant impact on the northern stratosphere. The asymmetric responses of the northern and southern polar stratosphere to SST meridional gradient changes were found to be mainly due to different wave properties and transmissions in the northern and southern atmosphere. Although SST increases may give rise to stronger waves, the results showed that the effect of SST increases on the vertical propagation of tropospheric waves into the stratosphere will vary with height and latitude and be sensitive to SST meridional gradient changes. Both uniform and non-uniform SST increases accelerated the large-scale Brewer–Dobson circulation(BDC), but the gradient increases of SST between 60°S and 60°N resulted in younger mean age-of-air in the stratosphere and a larger increase in tropical upwelling, with a much higher tropopause than from a global uniform 1.0 K SST increase. | HU Dingzhu TIAN Wenshou XIE Fei SHU Jianchuan Sandip DHOMSE | 2014 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2014,31,4: | 5
Surface-ligand protected reduction on plasmonic tuning of one-dimensional MoO_(3−x)nanobelts for solar steam generation显示文摘Sub-stoichiometric MoO_(3−x)nanostructures with plasmonic absorption via creating oxygen vacancies have attracted extensive attentions for many intriguing applications. However, the synthesis of one-dimensional(1D)plasmonic MoO_(3−x)nanostructures with widely tunable plasmonic absorption has remained a significant challenge because of their serious morphological destruction and phase change with increasing the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Here we demonstrate a surface-ligand protected reduction strategy for the synthesis of 1D MoO_(3−x)nanobelts with tunable plasmonic absorption in a wide wavelength range from 200 to 2,500 nm.Polyethylene glycol(PEG-400)is used as both the reductant to produce oxygen vacancies and the surface protected ligands to maintain 1D morphology during the formation process of MoO_(3−x)nanobelts,enabling the widely tunable plasmonic absorption.Owing to their broad plasmonic absorption and unique 1D nanostructure,we further demonstrate the application of 1D MoO_(3−x)nanobelts as photothermal film for interfacial solar evaporator. The surface-ligand protected reduction strategy provides a new avenue for the developing plasmonic semiconductor oxides with maintained particle morphology and thus enriching their wide applications. | Xindian Li Dongyang Wang Yun Zhang Luntao Liu Wenshou Wang | 2020 | Nano Research2020,13,11: | 4
Analyses of temperature and humidity profiles and heat balance of the surface boundary-layer in the hinterland of the Taklimakan Desert显示文摘The daily variation regularities of micro-meteorological features, such as the surface layer temperature and humidity profiles of the inner desert in summer, the temperature of sand bed, the radiation of the earth's surface and the heat balance, were analyzed by combination method and logarithm regression according to the data obtained from the Atmospheric Environmental Observation Station of Taklimakan Desert in July―August of 2006 and 2007. It has been shown that temperature inversion occurred near the surface layer at night in summer, the temperature increased with the height within a certain altitude range, and the reverse was true during the daytime. The ground surface radiation balance of the Taklimakan Desert was mainly positive; other radiation components (the global radiation, the reflective radiation, the ground upward long wave radiation and the net radiation) exhibited daily variation char- acteristics evidently and showed normal diurnal cycle, except for the downward atmospheric long-wave radiation. The heat exchange of the surface layer of the desert was dominated by turbulence sensible heat, and only a small portion of heat was transferred to the atmospheric surface layer in the form of latent heat. The surface sensible heat and latent heat changed with the increase and decrease of sun elevation angle, with maximum of the latent heat appearing in wee hours and the peak value of the sensible heat appearing at noon. Observation and analysis showed that heating effect of the underlying surface of the desert was great on the aerosphere; the surface was a high heat source during the day and became a weak cold source at night. | WEI WenShou WANG MinZhong HE Qing LEI JiaQiang ALI Mamtimin | 2008 | Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,S2: | 4
Different Impact of Central Pacific and Eastern Pacific El Nio on the Duration of Sudden Stratospheric Warming显示文摘The NCEP–NCAR reanalysis dataset and the Had ISST dataset(1959–2014) are used to analyze the impact of two types of El Nio events, i.e., eastern Pacific El Nio(EP-El Nio) and central Pacific El Nio(CP-El Nio) events, on the duration of major and minor sudden stratospheric warmings(SSWs) in Northern Hemisphere winter(November to February). Although the frequency of major and minor SSWs during different types of El Nio shows no distinct differences, the duration of both major and minor SSWs during CP-El Nio is shorter than that during EP-El Nio. The spatial distribution of geopotential height anomalies preceding major SSWs resembles the western Pacific(WP) teleconnection pattern, while the spatial distribution of geopotential height anomalies preceding minor SSWs bears similarity to the Pacific–North America(PNA)teleconnection pattern. An enhancement of the strength of both wavenumber 1 and wavenumber 2 is found before major SSWs. Before minor SSWs, wavenumber 1 is also strengthened, but wavenumber 2 is weakened. The analysis also reveals that EP-El Nio tends to induce positive phases of PNA and WP teleconnections, while CP-El Nio induces negative-phase WP teleconnection. As the positive phases of the PNA and WP teleconnections are related to the strengthening of wavenumber 1, EP-El Nio causes an enhancement of wavenumber 1 in the high-latitude upper troposphere and an enhancement of the upward wave flux in the high-latitude stratosphere, accompanied by a negative anomaly in Eliassen–Palm flux divergence in the subpolar stratosphere, which accounts for the longer SSW duration during EP-El Nio than during CP-El Nio. | Yuanpu LI Wenshou TIAN | 2017 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2017,34,6: | 4
Spatial and temporal temperature variations in Xinjiang,China during 1961-2008显示文摘This study examines spatial and temporal changes in 16 extreme temperature indices at 37 weather stations in Xinjiang and their associations with changes in climate means during 1961-2008.Linear regression analyses reveal that significant increasing trends in temperature were observed over Xinjiang, with the rate of 0.13 °C/decade,0.24 °C/decade,and 0.52 °C/decade for annual mean temperature, annual maximum, and minimum temperature, respectively.Annual frequency of cool nights(days) has decreased by 2.45 days/decade(0.86 days/decade),whereas the frequency of warm nights(days) has increased by 4.85 days/decade(1.62 days/decade).Seasonally,the frequencies of summer warm nights and days are changing more rapidly than the corresponding frequencies for cool nights and days. However, normalization of the extreme and mean series shows that the rate of changes in extreme temperature events are generally less than those of mean temperatures, except for winter cold nights which are changing as rapidly as the winter mean minimum temperatures. These results indicate that there have been seasonally and diurnally asymmetric changes in extreme temperature events relative to recent increases in temperature means in Xinjiang. | YanWei Zhang WenShou Wei FengQing Jiang MingZhe Liu WenWen Wang Lei Bai KaiFeng Li Rui Shao ZhiWen Dong | 2012 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2012,4,1: | 4
Variations of Snow Temperature and their Influence on Snow Cover Physical Parameters in the Western Tianshan Mountains,China显示文摘This article discussed about snow temperature variations and their impact on snow cover parameters.Automatic temperature recorders were used to sample at 10-minute intervals at the Tianshan Station for Snow-cover and Avalanche Research,Chinese Academy of Sciences.10-layer snow temperature and the snow cover parameters were measured by the snow property analyzer (Snow Fork) in its Stable period,Interim period and Snow melting period. Results indicate that the amplitude of the diurnal fluctuation in the temperature during Snow melting period is 1.62 times greater than that during Stable period.Time up to the peak temperature at the snow surface lags behind the peak solar radiation by more than 2.5 hours, and lags behind the peak atmospheric temperature by more than 0.2 hours during all three periods. The optimal fitted function of snow temperature profile becomes more complicated from Stable period to Snow melting period.22 h temperature profiles in Stable period are the optimal fitted by cubic polynomial equation. In Interim period and Snow melting period, temperature profiles are optimal fitted by exponential equation between sunset and sunrise, and by Fourier function when solar radiation is strong. The vertical gradient in the snow temperature reaches its maximum value at the snow surface for three periods. The peak of this maximum value occurs during Stable period, and is 4.46 times greater than during Interim period. The absolute value of temperature gradient is lower than 0.1°C cm-1 for 30 cm beneath snow surface.Snow temperature and temperature gradient in Stable period~Interim period indirectly cause increase (decrease) of snow density mainly by increasing (decreasing) permittivity. While it dramatically increases its water content to change its permittivity and snow density in Snow melting period. | CHEN Xia WEI WenShou LIU MingZhe GU GuangQin | 2011 | Journal of Mountain Science2011,8,6: | 3
Aerosol optical absorption by dust and black carbon in Taklimakan Desert, during no-dust and dust-storm conditions显示文摘Aerosol absorption coefficient ap involves the additive contribution of both black carbon aerosol(BC)and dust aerosol. The linear statistical regression analysis approach introduced by Fialho et al.(2005)is used to estimate the absorption exponents of BC and dust aerosol absorption coefficients, and further to separate the contributions of these two types of aerosols from the total light absorption coefficient measured in the hinterland of Taklimakan Desert in the spring of 2006.Absorption coefficients are measured by means of a 7-wavelength Aethalometer from 1 March to 31 May and from 1 November to 28 December,2006. The absorption exponent of BC absorption coefficient α is estimated as(-0.95±0.002)under background weather(supposing the observed absorption coefficient is due only to BC);the estimated absorption exponent of dust aerosol absorption coefficient β during the 6 dust storm periods(strong dust storm)is (?2.55±0.009).Decoupling analysis of the measured light absorption coefficients demonstrates that,on average, the light absorptions caused by dust aerosol and BC make up about 50.5%and 49.5%respectively of the total light absorption at 520 nm;during dust weather process periods(dust storm, floating dust, blowing dust),the contribution of dust aerosol to absorption extinction is 60.6%on average;in the hinterland of desert in spring, dust aerosol is also the major contributor to the total aerosol light absorption, more than that of black carbon aerosol. | Hui Lu Wenshou Wei Mingzhe Liu Weidong Gao Xi Han | 2012 | Particuology2012,10,4: | 3

The Impacts of Trade Restrictions on World Agricultural Price Volatility during the COVID-19 Pandemic显示文摘During the COVID-19 pandemic, countries applied trade restrictions to insulate their domestic markets from the world market. However, these trade policies could have amplified international market price fluctuations. This paper explores the effects of trade restrictions on international agricultural price volatility.A theoretical model is developed to quantify how trade policies amplify the initial shock.Using panel data covering 71 countries from January 2020 to July 2021,we examine empirically the effects of trade policies on world agricultural price volatility. The results show that trade distortions further induced volatility of world agricultural prices by around 22 percent during the COVID-19 pandemic. The multiplier effects are much more substantial in agricultural exporting countries than in importing countries.Large countries like China and the US could make significant contributions to stabilizing world prices by limiting the extent of unilateral trade policy interventions. | Wenshou Yan Yan Cai Faqin Lin Dessie Tarko Ambaw | 2021 | China & World Economy2021,29,6: | 2

Assessing changes in extreme precipitation over Xinjiang using regional climate model of PRECIS显示文摘In this paper, an analysis, with the simulation of PRECIS(Providing Regional Climate for Impact Studies), was made for future precipitation extremes, under SRES(Special Report on Emission Scenarios) A2 and B2 in IPCC(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) AR4. The precipitation extremes were calculated and analyzed by ETCCDI(Climate Change Detection and Indices). The results show that:(1) In Present Scenario(1961–1900), PRECIS could capture the spatial pattern of precipitation in Xinjiang.(2) The simulated annual precipitation and seasonal precipitation in Xinjiang had a significantly positive trend and its variability had been deeply impacted by terrain. There was a strong association between increasing trend and the extreme precipitation's increase in frequency and intensity during 1961–2008. Under SRES A2 and B2, extreme precipitation indicated an increasing tendency at the end of the 21 st century. The extreme summer precipitation increased prominently in a year.(3) PRECIS's simulation under SRES A2 and B2 indicated increased frequency of heavy precipitation events and also enhancement in their intensity towards the end of the 21 st century. Both A2 and B2 scenarios show similar patterns of projected changes in precipitation extremes towards the end of the 21 st century. However, the magnitude of changes in B2 scenario was on the lower side. In case of extreme precipitation, variation between models can exceed both internal variability and variability of different SRES. | YanWei Zhang QuanSheng Ge FengQing Jiang JingYun Zheng WenShou Wei | 2015 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2015,7,2: | 2
The Impacts of Two Types of El Nińo on Global Ozone Variations in the Last Three Decades显示文摘The effects of El Nińo Modoki events on global ozone concentrations are investigated from 1980 to 2010 El Nińo Modoki events cause a stronger Brewer–Dobson(BD) circulation which can transports more ozone-poor air from the troposphere to stratosphere, leading to a decrease of ozone in the lower-middle stratosphere from 90°S to 90°N. These changes in ozone concentrations reduce stratospheric column ozone. The reduction in stratospheric column ozone during El Nińo Modoki events is more pronounced over the tropical eastern Pacific than over other tropical areas because transport of ozone-poor air from middle–high latitudes in both hemispheres to low latitudes is the strongest between 60°W and 120°W. Because of the decrease in stratospheric column ozone during El Nińo Modoki events more UV radiation reaches the tropical troposphere leading to significant increases in tropospheric column ozone An empirical orthogonal function(EOF) analysis of the time series from 1980 to 2010 of stratospheric and tropospheric ozone monthly anomalies reveals that: El Nińo Modoki events are associated with the primary EOF modes of both time series. We also found that El Nińo Modoki events can affect global ozone more significantly than canonical El Nińo events. These results imply that El Nińo Modoki is a key contributor to variations in global ozone from 1980 to 2010. | XIE Fei LI Jianping TIAN Wenshou ZHANG Jiankai SHU Jianchuan | 2014 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2014,31,5: | 2
Direct and indirect effects of solar variations on stratospheric ozone and temperature显示文摘We have used a fully coupled chemistry-climate model(WACCM)to investigate the relative importance of the direct and indirect effects of 11a solar variations on stratospheric temperature and ozone.Although the model does not contain a quasi-biennial oscillation(QBO)and uses fixed sea surface temperature(SST),it is able to produce a second maximum solar response in tropical lower stratospheric(TLS)temperature and ozone of approximately 0.5 K and 3%,respectively.In the TLS,the solar spectral variations in the chemistry scheme play a more important role than solar spectral variations in the radiation scheme in generating temperature and ozone responses. The chemistry effect of solar variations causes significant changes in the Brewer-Dobson(BD)circulation resulting in ozone anomalies in the TLS.The model simulations also show a negative feedback in the upper stratosphere between the temperature and ozone responses.A wavelet analysis of the modeled ozone and temperature time series reveals that the maximum solar responses in ozone and temperature caused by both chemical and radiative effects occur at different altitudes in the upper stratosphere. The analysis also confirms that both the direct radiative and indirect ozone feedback effects are important in generating a solar response in the upper stratospheric temperatures, although the solar spectral variations in the chemistry scheme give the largest solar cycle power in the upper stratospheric temperature. | SHANG Lin TIAN WenShou DHOMSE Sandip CHIPPERFIELD Martyn P LIU Yi WANG WuKe | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,31: | 2
Comparisons of AGRI/FY-4A Cloud Fraction and Cloud Top Pressure with MODIS/Terra Measurements over East Asia显示文摘Fengyun-4 A(FY-4 A),the second generation of China’s geostationary meteorological satellite, provides high spatiotemporal resolution cloud products over East Asia.In this study, cloud fraction(CFR)and cloud top pressure(CTP)products in August 2017 derived from the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager(AGRI)aboard FY-4 A(AGRI/FY-4 A)are retrospectively compared with those from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)aboard Terra(MODIS/Terra)over East Asia.To avoid possible errors in the comparison caused by the lower temporal coverage of MODIS/Terra products compared to that of AGRI/FY-4 A over the same region and to account for time lags between observations of the two instruments,we construct datasets of AGRI/FY-4 A CFR and CTP to match those of MODIS/Terra in each scan over East Asia in August 2017.Results show that the CFR and CTP datasets of the two instruments generally agree well, with the linear correlation coefficients(R)between CFR(CTP)data of 0.83(0.80)regardless of time lags.Though longer time lags contribute to the worse consistency between CFR(CTP)data derived from observations of the two instruments in most cases, large CFR/CTP discrepancies do not always match with long time lags.Large CFR discrepancies appear in the vicinity of the Tibetan Plateau(TP;28°–45°N,75°–105°E).These differences in the cloud detection by the two instruments largely occur when MODIS/Terra detects clear-sky while AGRI/FY-4 A detects higher values of CFR,and this accounts for 61%of the CFR discrepancy greater than 50%near the TP.In the case of CTP,the largest discrepancies appear in the eastern Iranian Plateau(IP;25°–45°N,60°–80°E),where there are some samples with long time lags(20–35 min)and fewer daily data samples are available for computing monthly means compared to other regions since there are many clearsky data samples there during the study period. | Tao WANG Jiali LUO Jinglin LIANG Baojian WANG Wenshou TIAN Xiaoyan CHEN | 2019 | Journal of Meteorological Research2019,33,4: | 2
