Relationship between the Asian-Pacific oscillation and the tropical cyclone frequency in the western North Pacific显示文摘The relationship between the Asian-Pacific oscillation (APO) and the tropical cyclone frequency over the western North Pacific (WNP) in summer is preliminarily investigated through an analysis of ob- served data. The result has shown clearly that APO is significantly and positively correlated to the tropical cyclone frequency in the WNP. If APO is above (below) the normal in summer, more (less) tropical cyclones will tend to appear in the WNP. The present study also addresses the large-scale at- mospheric general circulation changes underlying the linkage between APO and the WNP tropical cy- clone frequency. It follows that a positive phase of summer APO is concurrent with weakened as well as northward and eastward located western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), low-level convergence and high-level divergence, and reduced vertical zonal wind shear in the WNP, providing favorable envi- ronment for the tropical cyclone genesis, and thus more tropical cyclones will come into being, and vice versa.ZHOU BoTao1, CUI Xuan2 & ZHAO Ping3 1 Laboratory for Climate Studies, National Climate Center, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China 2 National Meteorological Center, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China 3 Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China 2008Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,3:40

Influence of interannual variability of Antarctic oscillation on mei-yu along the Yangtze and Huaihe River valley and its importance to prediction显示文摘Both correlation analysis and case study indi-cate that Antarctic oscillation (AAO) is closely related withsummer rainfall in eastern China. When AAO is stronger inboreal spring, especially in May, there is more mei-yu rain-fall in summer with a longer period along the Yangtze andHuaihe River valley. In contrast, there is less rainfall with ashorter period corresponding to a weaker AAO. Besides, ananomalous AAO changes the position and intensity of severalcirculation systems, which are important to summer rainfallalong the Yangtze and Huaihe River valley. Furthermore, theAntarctic sea ice is negatively correlated with the intensity ofAAO with a 6-month leading time. The result in this studyprovides a new method for the prediction of mei-yu.GAO Hui~(1,2), XUE Feng~1 WANG Huijun~1 1. 5Kinematics Modeling and Experiments of Pectoral Oscillation Propulsion Robotic Fish显示文摘A robotic fish driven by oscillating fins, 'Cownose Ray-I', is developed, which is in dorsoventrally flattened shape withouta tail. The robotic fish is composed of a body and two lateral fins. A three-factor kinematic model is established and used in thedesign of a mechanism. By controlling the three kinematic parameters, the robotic fish can accelerate and maneuver. Forwardvelocity is dependent on the largest amplitude and the number of waves in the fins, while the relative contribution of fin beatfrequency to the forward velocity of the robotic fish is different from the usual result. On the other hand, experimental results onmaneuvering show that phase difference has a stronger effect on swerving than the largest amplitude to some extent. In addition,as propulsion waves pass from the trailing edge to the leading edge, the robotic fish attains a backward velocity of 0. 15 m·s-1.Shao-bo Yang,Jing Qiu,Xiao-yun HanInstitute of Mechatronical Engineering and Automatization,National University of Defense Technology,Changsha 410073,P.R.China 2009Journal of Bionic Engineering2009,6,2:25

Direct numerical simulation of shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction in a supersonic compression ramp显示文摘A direct numerical simulation of the shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction flow in a supersonic 24-degree compression ramp is conducted with the free stream Mach number 2.9.The blow-and-suction disturbance in the upstream wall boundary is used to trigger the transition. Both the mean wall pressure and the velocity profiles agree with those of the experimental data, which validates the simulation. The turbulent kinetic energy budget in the separation region is analyzed. Results show that the turbulent production term increases fast in the separation region, while the turbulent dissipation term reaches its peak in the near-wall region. The turbulent transport term contributes to the balance of the turbulent conduction and turbulent dissipation.Based on the analysis of instantaneous pressure in the downstream region of the mean shock and that in the separation bubble, the authors suggest that the low frequency oscillation of the shock is not caused by the upstream turbulent disturbance, but rather the instability of separation bubble.LI XinLiang1,FU DeXun2,MA YanWen2 & LIANG Xian1 1 Key Laboratory of High Temperature Gas Dynamics,Institute of Mechanics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100190,China 2 The State Key Laboratory of Nonlinear Mechanics,Institute of Mechanics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100190,China 2010Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2010,53,9:24
Research on the mechanics of underwater supersonic gas jets显示文摘An experimental research was carried out to study the fluid mechanics of underwater supersonic gas jets. High pressure air was injected into a water tank through converging-diverging nozzles (Laval nozzles). The jets were operated at different conditions of over-, full- and under-expansions. The jet sequences were visualized using a CCD camera. It was found that the injection of supersonic air jets into water is always accompanied by strong flow oscillation, which is related to the phenomenon of shock waves feedback in the gas phase. The shock wave feedback is different from the acoustic feedback when a supersonic gas jet discharges into open air, which causes screech tone. It is a process that the shock waves enclosed in the gas pocket induce a periodic pressure with large amplitude variation in the gas jet. Consequently, the periodic pressure causes the jet oscillation including the large amplitude expansion. Detailed pressure measurements were also conducted to verify the shock wave feedback phenomenon. Three kinds of measuring methods were used, i.e., pressure probe submerged in water, pressure measurements from the side and front walls of the nozzle devices respectively. The results measured by these methods are in a good agreement. They show that every oscillation of the jets causes a sudden increase of pressure and the average frequency of the shock wave feedback is about 5–10 Hz.SHI HongHui1, WANG BoYi2 & DAI ZhenQing2 1 College of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, Hangzhou 310018, China 2 State Key Laboratory of Nonlinear Mechanics, Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China 2010Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2010,53,3:22
Significant relationship between spring AO and the summer rainfall along the Yangtze River显示文摘The influence of spring AO on the summer rainfall along the Yangtze River is investigated. The long-term rainfall observations are filtered to remove the low-frequency variations longer than 10 years. The inter-annual components show a high correlation to AO in the last hundred years. The strongest correlation appears for May AO and summer rainfall with a value of -0.39, significant above the 99% confidence level. Associated with one standard deviation stronger May AO index, the rainfall over the Yangtze River to the southern Japan decreases by about 3%-9%, while, at the same time increases by about 3%-6% in the northern China and far-eastern Russia. The coherent changes in rainfall are significantly related to the East Asian summer jet stream in the upper troposphere. When there is stronger AO in spring, the jet stream tends to move polarward in summer, and leads the rainfall-belt to move northward too. That gives rise to a drier condition in the Yangtze River valley, wetter anomalies in northern China.GONG Daoyi ZHU Jinhong WANG Shaowu 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,11:22
Variation of the NAO and NPO associated with climate jump in the 1960s显示文摘The interannual variation of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and its relationship with the climate jump in the Northern Hemisphere in the 1960s, are discussed using the data analyses. 11An Observational Study of the 30-50 Day Atmospheric Oscillations Part I: Structure and Propagation显示文摘Features of structure and propagation of the 30 to SO day atmospheric oscillations are investigated using the ECMWF analysis of 1980-1983. Evidence is provided to confirm the characteristics of the oscillation in the equatorial region. Those in the mid-high latitudes, however, are revealed to be very different from the tropics and pose a strong barotropic structure. Horizontal coherence shows teleconnection patterns which can be identified as EAP and PNA. The wind field of the specified time scale of the oscillation appears as long-lived vortices and vortex pairs. Mid-latitude perturbations propagate clearly westwards, especially during the winter season. In the high latitudes, they propagate westwards in the winter but eastwards in the summer. Meridional propagations are rather different from region to region.李崇银 1990Advances in Atmospheric Sciences1990,7,3:20

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE TROPICAL INTRASEASONAL OSCILLATION AND THE EFFECT OF WARM SST显示文摘An atmospheric general circulation model is used in a series of three experiments to simulate the intraseasonaloscillation in the tropical atmosphere.Analyses of the model daily data show that various physical variables, from sever-al different regions, exhibit fluctuations with a spectral peak between 30 and 60 days. This represents a 30—60 dayoscillation in the tropical atmosphere and possesses several features which are consistent with observations. These in-clude a horizontal structure dominated by zonal wavenumber 1 and a vertical structure which is predominantlybaroclinic. The effect of warm SST (sea surface temperature) anomalies on the 30—60 day oscillation in the tropical atmos-phere is also simulated by prescribing global SST as observed in 1983.This has the effect of weakening the oscillationwhile at the same time the vertical structure becomes less baroclinic. The importance of cumulus convection to the propagational characteristics of this oscillation is demonstrated by acomparison of results based on different parameterizations for convection. In one case, where the maximum convectionover the Pacific is simulated to be too far east, the simulated 30—60 day oscillation shows evidence of westward propa-gation.In the second case, where the convection maximum is located near the observed position in the western Pacific, there is more clearly evidence of eastward propagation. Both results suggest that the location of maximum convection in the Pacific can have an important influence on thestrength, structure and propagation of the 30—60 day oscillation.李崇银 Ian Smith 1995Acta meteorologica Sinica1995,9,1:16
Antarctic oscillation: concept and applications显示文摘Based on the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data set, empirical orthogonal function analysis and correlation analysis have been carried out. Antarctic oscillation index (AOI) is defined as the difference between the zonal-mean monthly sea level pressure departures of 40°S and 65°S. Regional surface temperature and precipitation over the extratropical Southern Hemisphere have a close relationship with AOI.Daoyi Gong Shaowu Wang 1998Chinese Science Bulletin1998,43,9:15
Power system low frequency oscillation monitoring and analysis based on multi-signal online identification显示文摘The advance in the wide-area measurement system (WAMS) is driving the power system to the trend of wide-area monitoring and control. The Prony method is usually used for low frequency oscillation online identification. However, the identified amplitude and phase information is not sufficiently used.In this paper, the amplitude is adopted to detect the occurrence of the oscillation and to obtain the mode observability of the sites. The phase is adopted to identify the oscillation generator grouping and to obtain the mode shapes. The time varying characteristics of low frequency oscillations are studied. The behaviors and the characters of low frequency oscillations are displayed by dynamic visual techniques.Demonstrations on the '11.9' low frequency oscillation of the Guizhou Power Grid substantiate the feasibility and the validation of the proposed methods.YUAN Ye1,2,SUN YuanZhang2,CHENG Lin2,CHEN Gang2 & WANG Peng3 1 State Nuclear Electric Power Planning Design and Research Institute,Beijing 100032,China 2 State Key Laboratory of Power Systems,Deptment of Electrical Engineering,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100084,China 3 EEE School,Nanyang Technological University,Singapore 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,9:13
Evolution mechanisms of the intraseasonal oscillation associated with the Yangtze River Basin flood in 1998显示文摘With 1998 NCEP reanalysis data and the linear diagnostic equation for local me- ridional circulation, four main processes and the boundary effects with relatively large contribu- tions to the intraseasonal oscillation of the vertical branches of the East Asian meridional circula- tion are quantitatively identified among all the processes involved in the quasi-primitive equations used in the derivation of the linear diagnostic equation. The numerical results show that the main processes with maximal contributions in the lower latitudes include the latent heating and vertical transports of sensible heat. These processes are mainly associated with the tropical convective activities and result in the low-frequency cyclones in the lower latitudes. The main processes with maximal contributions in the higher latitudes are the horizontal transports of westerly momentum and horizontal temperature advections. These processes are mainly associated with the fluctua- tions in the westerlies and result in the low-frequency cyclones in the higher latitudes. The low-frequency cyclones propagating away from lower latitudes not only interact with those from higher latitudes to enhance the lifting of the moist air in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), but also leave room for the development of the low-frequency anticyclones over the South China Sea (SCS). The southwesterly in the northwestern quadrant of the SCS anticyclones provides the YRB with abundant moisture. This favorable moisture condition along with the enhanced rising motion in the YRB leads to the extraordinary flood in 1998.CHEN Guixing LI Weibiao YUAN Zhuojian WEN Zhiping 2005Science China Earth Sciences2005,48,7:13
The relationship between the thermohaline circulation and climate variability显示文摘The long-term integration with the Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System model of the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics(IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences has been used in the investigations on the relationship between the thermohaline circulation and climate variability. The results show that the strength of the North Atlantic Thermohaline circulation (THC) is negatively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Based on this kind of relationship, and also the instrument-measured climate record such as air pressure and sea surface temperature, the activity of the thermohaline circulation during the 20th century has been evaluated. The inferred variations of the strength of the THC is that, during two multi-decadal periods of 1867-1903 and 1934-1972, the THC is estimated to have been running stronger, whereas during the two periods of 1904-1933 and 1973-1994, it appears to have been weaker.ZHOU Tianjun ZHANG Xuehong WANG Shaowu 2000Chinese Science Bulletin2000,45,11:13
Oscillation characteristics of summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley and relevant climate background显示文摘Based on the summer precipitation data from the Huaihe River valley and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River from 1922 to 2007,we analyzed the interannual and interdecadal oscillation and probability distribution characteristics of summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley during the same period, using the wavelet transform and generalized extreme distribution methods.Whereby,we studied the climate background of East Asia Summer Monsoon (EASM),Sea Surface Temperature (SST),East Asia telecorrelation circulation, and their relationship with the interannual and interdecadal oscillation of summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley. We further compared the difference of interdecadal oscillation of summer precipitation and the relevant climate background between the Huaihe River valley and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The results show that:1) The intensity change of quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley is consistent with that of interdecadal oscillation. The summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley has been more than normal since the end of the 1990s,and the QBO is very significant.Meanwhile, the probability of occurrence of extreme heavy rainfall increased obviously.2) The interdecadal oscillation of summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley has a close relationship with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and interdecadal oscillation of EASM.When PDO is in the cold phase and EASM weakens, the summer precipitation will be greater than normal.3) QBO of summer precipitation in the Huaihe River valley is mainly controlled by that of EASM,and it has a relationship with a circulation pattern of 'positive-negative-positive' from the high to the low latitudes in East Asia.4) There is interdecadal phase difference in summer precipitation between the Huaihe River valley and the middle and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which is mainly related to the intensity and position of West Pacific subtropical high.FengYing Wei Ting Zhang 2010Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,2:13
