1Roles of insulin-like growth factor Ⅱ in regulating female reproductive physiology显示文摘The number of growth factors involved in female fertility has been extensively studied, but reluctance to add essential growth factors in culture media has limited progress in optimizing embryonic growth and implantation outcomes, a situation that has ultimately led to reduced pregnancy outcomes. Insulin-like growth factor Ⅱ(IGF-Ⅱ) is the most intricately regulated of all known reproduction-related growth factors characterized to date, and is perhaps the predominant growth factor in human ovarian follicles. This review aims to concisely summarize what is known about the role of IGF-Ⅱ in follicular development, oocyte maturation, embryonic development, implantation success, placentation, fetal growth, and in reducing placental cell apoptosis, as well as present strategies that use growth factors in culture systems to improve the developmental potential of oocytes and embryos in different species. 2Localization and the possible role of plasminogen activators and inhibitors in early stages of placentation显示文摘The distribution of mRNAs of tissue type (t) and urokinase type (u) plasminogen activator (PA) plus their corresponding inhibitors, type-1 (PAI-1) and type-2 (PAI-2) have been studied in the tissues of human first and second trimester placentae by in situ hybridization. The results show that: (i) All the molecules, tPA, uPA, PAI-1 and PAI-2, were identified in the blood vessels, the majority of extravillous trophoblastic cells of the decidual layer between Rohr’s and Nitabuch’s stria and in the trophoblast cells lining the chorionic plate, basal plate, intercotyledonary septae and cytotrophoblast cells of the chorionic villous tree. (ii) No expression of such probes was observed in the basal and chorionic plate, glandular cells of the decidua, the septal tissues or the villous core mesenchyme. 4Insights into the Pathogenesis of Preeclampsia Based on the Features of Placentation and Tumorigenesis显示文摘Placentation and tumorigenesis have many common features.Human placentation builds a maternal-fetal connection,circumvents maternal immune rejection of the fetus,and utilizes mechanisms that support tumorigenesis,such as proliferation,invasion,angiogenesis,and immune tolerance.Trophoblasts of the human placenta mimic the behavior of malignant cells,proliferating and invading the uterine decidua until reaching the myometrium and remodeling the spiral arteries that establish a new vascular system and escape the maternal immune response.These processes are under precise temporal and spatial regulation,and their dysregulation is associated with different pregnancy syndromes,including preeclampsia(PE),a pregnancy syndrome that is the leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity.At present,the precise mechanisms underlying the development of PE remain unclear.Here,we summarize and dissect the features between physiological placentation and pathological tumorigenesis to explore the pathogenesis of PE-which we believe to be the result of insufficient placentation,compared to the overaggression of tumorigenesis-to provide novel strategies to prevent and treat PE.Yun-Qing Zhu Xing-Yu Yan Hua Li Cong Zhang 2021Reproductive and Developmental Medicine2021,5,2:0
5Basic Research Advances in China on Embryo Implantation,Placentation,and Parturition显示文摘This review aimed to summarize the major progress in maternal-fetal medicine achieved by Chinese scientists in recent years.PubMed was systematically searched from January 2020 to November 2023.Publications that reported the progress in embryo implantation,placentation,and parturition made by Chinese scientists in the last 3 years were selected.The milestone events during gestation,embryo implantation,endometrial decidualization,placentation,and parturition are pivotal to a successful pregnancy.Embryo implantation requires intricate interactions between implantation-competent blastocysts and receptive endometrium.To adapt to pregnancy,endometrial stromal cells transform into specialized decidual cells,which occur spontaneously under the influence of ovarian hormones in humans but require the presence of embryos in mice.With embryonic development,the placenta forms to support fetal growth until parturition.The maternal-fetal interface is composed of diverse cell types,including endometrial decidual cells,placental trophoblast cells,endothelial cells,and various immune cells,a sophisticated interplay among which contributes to the maintenance of pregnancy.Near term,the uterus transitions from quiescence to contractility,in preparation for delivery.Disruptions to these events lead to pregnancy-related disorders such as repeated implantation failure,recurrent pregnancy loss,preeclampsia,fetal growth restriction,preterm birth,and infertility.In recent years,Chinese scientists have made prominent achievements in basic research on the aforementioned pregnancy events.Chinese scientists have made remarkable contributions to reproductive biology and maternal-fetal medicine research in recent years,highlighting future research directions in this field.Haili Bao Haibin Wang 2024Maternal-Fetal Medicine2024,6,1:0
