Perspective and Prospects for Rare Earth Permanent Magnets显示文摘Rare earth permanent magnets constitute a mature technology, but the shock of the 2011 rare earth crisis led to the re-evaluation of many ideas from the 1980s and 1990s about possible new hard magnets containing little or no rare earth(or heavy rare earth).Nd-Fe-B magnets have been painstakingly and skillfully optimized for a wide range of applications in which high performance is required at reasonable cost.Sm-Co is the material of choice when high-temperature stability is required, and Sm-Fe-N magnets are making their way into some niche applications. The scope for improvement in these basic materials by substitution has been rather thoroughly explored, and the effects of processing techniques on the microstructure and hysteresis are largely understood.A big idea from a generation ago-which held real potential to raise the record energy product significantly-was the oriented exchange-spring hard/soft nanocomposite magnet;however,it has proved very difficult to realize.Nevertheless, the field has evolved, and innovation has flourished in other areas. For example, electrical personal transport has progressed from millions of electric bicycles to the point where cars and trucks with electrical drives are becoming mainstream, and looks ready to bring the dominance of the internal combustion engine to an end.As the limitations of particular permanent magnets become clearer, ingenuity and imagination are being used to design around them, and to exploit the available mix of rare earth resources most efficiently.Huge new markets in robotics beckon, and the opportunities offered by additive manufacturing are just beginning to be explored.New methods of increasing magnet stability at elevated temperature are being developed, and integrated multifunctionality of hard magnets with other useful properties is now envisaged. These themes are elaborated here, with various examples. | J.M.D.Coey | 2020 | Engineering2020,6,2: | 31

Insight of magnesium alloys and composites for orthopedic implant applications-a review显示文摘Magnesium(Mg)and its alloys have been widely researched for orthopedic applications recently.Mg alloys have stupendous advantages over the commercially available stainless steel,Co-Cr-Ni alloy and titanium implants.Till date, extensive mechanical,in-vitro and in-vivo studies have been done to improve the biomedical performance of Mg alloys through alloying, processing conditions, surface modification etc. This review comprehensively describes the strategies for improving the mechanical and degradation performance of Mg alloys through properly tailoring the composition of alloying elements, reinforcements and processing techniques. It also highlights the status and progress of research in to(i)the selection of nutrient elements for alloying, reinforcement and its effects(ii)type of Mg alloy system(binary, ternary and quaternary)and composites(iii)grain refinement for strengthening through severe plastic deformation techniques.Furthermore it also emphasizes on the importance of Mg composites with regard to hard tissue applications. | R Radha D Sreekanth | 2017 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2017,5,3: | 21
Theoretical analysis and experimental investigation on flexural performance of steel reinforced ultrahigh toughness cementitious composite (RUHTCC) beams显示文摘UHTCC (ultrahigh toughness cementitious composite), which is a kind of ultrahigh toughness cemen- titious composites material, exhibits pseudo strain hardening feature when subjected to tension load, and has enormous ductility and prominent crack dispersal ability. Accordingly, UHTCC can improve mechanical behavior of ordinary concrete structure especially its durability, and has been regarded as historical breakthrough to traditional cementitious materials. In this paper, the study focuses on flexure behavior of steel reinforced beam made of UHTCC. Based on the plane section assumption, along with two equilibrium equations of force and moment, the formulae to calculate the flexural load capability for the reinforced ultrahigh toughness cementitious composite (RUHTCC) beam were developed under the assumption that the compression stress- strain relationship in the UHTCC material is a bilinear model. Following this, the simplified formulae were further evolved by effective rectangle stress distribution approach in order to facilitate design of practical engineering. Two effective parameters introduced in effective rectangle approach were determined. The mathematical expressions to evaluate limited rein- forcement ratio, flexural stiffness as well as ductility index were proposed, too. Last, two series of dif- ferent reinforcement ratios of the RUHTCC beams were tested in four-point flexure loading. For com- parison purposes, ordinary RC (reinforced concrete) beams also were prepared. Both moment curva- ture curves and load mid-span displacement curves were recorded and compared with the theoretical calculations. A good agreement between them was found, which validates the proposed theoretical formulae. For ductility index, a slightly big difference between the experimental values and the calcu- lated ones exists. The experimental results show that, compared to control RC beams, the RUHTCC beam can improve both flexural capacity and ductility index, and the degree of improvement will de- crease with the increase in the reinforcement ratio. Particularly, the results also reveal that lager crack width in control beams can be greatly reduced by formation of tightly-spaced fine cracks in UHTCC, which offers more durable structures. | XU ShiLang ZHANG XiuFang | 2009 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,4: | 18
Fluorine-containing oxidizers for metal fuels in energetic formulations显示文摘Fluorine containing oxidizers, primarily polymers, are extensively used in pyrotechnic compositions.Fluorinated oxidizers are less explored for metalized propellants and explosives despite a potential advantage of substantial heat release combined with gaseous combustion products. This review summarizes different types of fluorinated oxidizers used in energetic formulations or of potential interest for such systems, including gases, polymers, and inorganic compounds. Types of energetic formulations employing metals and fluoropolymers are discussed in more detail, including methods used to prepare composites and resulting salient features of the obtained materials. Laboratory experiments characterizing such materials, in particular, electron microscopy and thermal analysis, are discussed, showing characteristic morphologies and reaction sequences observed in different metal-fluorinated oxidizer composites. Striking similarities are noted in reaction sequences for diverse compositions hinting at possible similarities in the respective reaction mechanisms. Experiments probing ignition and combustion of metal-fluorinated oxidizer composites in laboratory conditions are also reviewed, including impact, flash heating and shock ignition. Finally, some practical performance tests for energetic formulations are described following by a brief discussion of the reaction mechanisms expected to govern ignition and combustion in various metal-fluorinated oxidizer composites. The conclusions are combined with recommendation for future research in the area of reactive metal-fluorinated oxidizer composites. | Siva Kumar Valluri Mirko Schoenitz Edward Dreizin | 2019 | Defence Technology(防务技术)2019,15,1: | 17
Investigation on microstructural, mechanical and electrochemical properties of aluminum composites reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets显示文摘In present study, the microstructure, mechanical and electrochemical properties of aluminum-graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs) composites were investigated before and after extrusion. The contents of graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs) were varied from 0.25 to 1.0 wt.%in aluminum matrix. The composites were fabricated thorough powder metallurgy method, and the experimental results revealed that Al-0.25%GNPs composite showed better mechanical properties compared with pure Al,Al-0.50%GNPs and Al-0.1.0%GNPs composites. Before extrusion, the Al-0.25%GNPs composite showed ~13.5%improvement in ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and ~50%enhancement in failure strain over monolithic matrix. On the other hand,Al-0.50%GNPs and Al-0.1.0%GNPs composites showed the tensile strength lower than monolithic matrix. No significant change was observed in 0.2%yield strength(YS) of the composites. However, the extruded materials showed different trends.The0.2%YS of composites increased with increase in GNPs filler weight fractions.Surprisingly,UTS of composites with 0.25 and 0.50%GNPs was lower than monolithic matrix. The failure strain of the baseline matrix was enhanced by ~46%with 0.25%graphene nanoplatelets. The superior mechanical properties(in terms of failure strain) of the Al-0.25%GNPs composite maybe attributed to 2-D structure, high surface area and curled nature of graphene. In addition, the corrosion resistance of pure Al and its composites reinforced with 0.5 and 1.0 wt%GNPs was also investigated. It was found that the corrosion rate increased considerably by the presence of GNPs. | Muhammad Rashad Fusheng Pan Zhengwen Yu Muhammad Asif Han Lin Rongjian Pan | 2015 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2015,25,5: | 17
Numerical simulation of isothermal chemical vapor infiltration process in fabrication of carbon-carbon composites by finite element method显示文摘The chemical vapor infiltration process in fabrication of carbon-carbon composites is highly inefficient and requires long processing time. These limitations add considerably to the cost of fabrication and restrict the application of this material. Efforts have been made to study the CVI process in fabrication of carbon-carbon composites by computer simulation and predict the process parameters, density, porosity, etc. According to the characteristics of CVI process, the basic principle of FEM and mass transport, the finite element model has been established. Incremental finite element equations and the elemental stiffness matrices have been derived for the first time. The finite element program developed by the authors has been used to simulate the ICVI process in fabrication of carbon-carbon composites. | 8 | Recent advances in joining of SiC-based materials(monolithic SiC and SiC_f/SiC composites):Joining processes, joint strength, and interfacial behavior显示文摘Silicon carbide(SiC) has been widely concerned for its excellent overall mechanical and physical properties, such as low density, good thermal-shock behavior, high temperature oxidation resistance, and radiation resistance; as a result, the SiC-based materials have been or are being widely used in most advanced fields involving aerospace, aviation, military, and nuclear power. Joining of SiC-based materials(monolithic SiC and SiCf/SiC composites) can resolve the problems on poor processing performance and difficulty of fabrication of large-sized and complex-shaped components to a certain extent, which are originated from their high inherent brittleness and low impact toughness.Starting from the introduction to SiC-based materials, joining of ceramics, and joint strength characterization, the joining of SiC-based materials is reviewed by classifying the as-received interlayer materials, involving no interlayer, metallic, glass-ceramic, and organic interlayers. In particular, joining processes(involving joining techniques and parameter conditions), joint strength, interfacial microstructures, and/or reaction products are highlighted for understanding interfacial behavior and for supporting development of application-oriented joining techniques. | Guiwu LIU Xiangzhao ZHANG Jian YANG Gunjun QIAO | 2019 | Journal of Advanced Ceramics2019,8,1: | 14
Ablation and radar-wave transmission performances of the nitride ceramic matrix composites显示文摘The 2.5 dimensional silica fiber reinforced nitride matrix composites (2.5D SiO2f/Si3N4-BN) were prepared through the preceramic polymer impregnation pyro- lysis (PIP) method. The ablation and radar-wave transparent performances of the composite at high temperature were evaluated under arc jet. The composition and ablation surface microstructures were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the 2.5D SiO2f/Si3N4-BN composites have a linear ablation rate of 0.33 mm/s and high radar-wave trans- parent ratio of 98.6%. The fused layer and the matrix are protected by each other, and no fused layer accumulates on the ablation surface. | 10 | Finite element analysis on the static and fatigue characteristics of composite multi-leaf spring显示文摘This paper investigated the static and fatigue behaviors of steel and composite multi-leaf spring using the ANSYS V12 software. The dimensions of an existing conventional leaf spring of a light commercial vehicle were used. The same dimensions were used to design composite multi-leaf spring for the two materials, E-glass fiber/epoxy and E-glass fiber/vinyl ester, which are of great interest to the transportation industry. Main consideration was given to the effects of material composition and its fiber orientation on the static and fatigue behaviors of leaf spring. The design constraints were bending stresses, deflection and fatigue life. Compared to the steel leaf spring, the designed composite spring has much lower bending stresses and deflections and higher fatigue life cycles. | Joo-teck Jeffrey KUEH Tarlochan FARIS | 2012 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science A(Applied Physics & Engineering)2012,13,3: | 14
Deposition of FeCoNiCrMn high entropy alloy(HEA) coating via cold spraying显示文摘High entropy alloys(HEAs) are of great interest in the community of materials science and engineering due to their unique phase structure. They are constructed with five or more principal alloying elements in equimolar or near-equimolar ratio. Therefore, HEAs can derive their performance from multiple principal elements rather than a single element. In this work, solid-state cold spraying(CS) was applied for the first time to produce FeCoNiCrMn HEA coating. The experimental results confirm that CS can be used to produce a thick HEA coating with low porosity. As a low-temperature deposition process, CS completely retained the HEA phase structure in the coating without any phase transformation. The characterization also reveals that the grains in the CSed HEA coating had experienced significant refinement as compared to those in the as-received HEA powder due the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization at the highly deformed interparticle region. Due to the increased dislocation density and grain boundaries,CSed HEA coating was much harder than the as-received powder. The tribological study shows that the CSed FeCoNiCrMn HEA coating resulted in lower wear rate than laser cladded HEA coatings. | Shuo Yin Wenya Li Bo Song Xingchen Yan Min Kuang Yaxin Xu Kui Wen Rocco Lupoi | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,6: | 13
3D Shapeable,Superior Electrically Conductive Cellulose Nanofibers/Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene Aerogels/Epoxy Nanocomposites for Promising EMI Shielding显示文摘In this work,3D highly electrically conductive cellulose nanofibers(CNF)/Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene aerogels(CTA)with aligned porous structures are fabricated by directional freezing followed by freeze-drying technique, and the thermally annealed CTA(TCTA)/epoxy nanocomposites are then fabricated by thermal annealing of CTA,subsequent vacuum-assisted impregnation and curing method. Results show that TCTA/epoxy nanocomposites possess 3D highly conductive networks with ultralow percolation threshold of 0.20 vol%Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x).When the volume fraction of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) is 1.38 vol%,the electrical conductivity(σ),electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness(EMI SE),and SE divided by thickness(SE/d)values of the TCTA/epoxy nanocomposites reach 1672 Sm-1,74 dB,and 37 dBmm-1,respectively,which are almost the highest values compared to those of polymer nanocomposites reported previously at the same filler content. In addition, compared to those of the samples without Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x),the storage modulus and heat-resistance index of TCTA/epoxy nanocomposites are enhanced to 9792.5 MPa and 310.7℃,increased by 62%and 6.9℃,respectively,presenting outstanding mechanical properties and thermal stabilities. The fabricated lightweight,easy-to-process,and shapeable TCTA/epoxy nanocomposites with superior EMI SE values, excellent mechanical properties, and thermal stabilities greatly broaden the applications of MXene-based polymer composites in the field of EMI shielding. | Lei Wang Ping Song Cheng-Te Lin Jie Kong Junwei Gu | 2020 | Research2020,,1: | 13
Carbon materials from melamine sponges for supercapacitors and lithium battery electrode materials: A review显示文摘With the increasing energy demand together with the deteriorating environment and decreasing fossil fuel resources, the development of highly efficient energy conversion and storage devices is one of the key challenges of both fundamental and applied research in energy technology.Melamine sponges(MS)with low density, high nitrogen content, and high porosity have been used to design and obtain three‐dimensional porous carbon electrode materials.More importantly, they are inexpensive, environment‐friendly, and easy to synthesize. There have been many reports on the modification of carbonized MS and MS‐based composites for supercapacitor and lithium battery electrode materials. In this paper, recent studies on the fabrication of electrode materials using MS as raw materials have been mainly reviewed, including carbonation, doping activation, and composite modification of MS,and expectations for the development of porous carbon materials for energy storage as a reference with excellent performance, environment‐friendliness, and long life. | Yanying Shi Guijing Liu Rencheng Jin Hui Xu Qingyao Wang Shanmin Gao | 2019 | Carbon Energy2019,1,2: | 11
Yolk-shell Si/C composites with multiple Si nanoparticles encapsulated into double carbon shells as lithium-ion battery anodes显示文摘The conceptual design of yolk-shell structured Si/C composites is considered to be an effective way to improve the recyclability and conductivity of Si-based anode materials. Herein, a new type of yolk-shell structured Si/C composite (denoted as TSC-PDA-B) has been intelligently designed by rational engineering and precise control. In the novel structure, the multiple Si nanoparticles with small size are successfully encapsulated into the porous carbon shells with double layers benefiting from the strong etching effect of HF. The TSC-PDA-B product prepared is evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The TSC-PDA-B product exhibits an excellent lithium storage performance with a high initial capacity of 2108 mAh g^-1 at a current density of 100 mA g^-1 and superior cycling performance of 1113 mAh g^-1 over 200 cycles. The enhancement of lithium storage performance may be attributed to the construction of hybrid structure including small Si nanoparticles, high surface area, and double carbon shells, which can not only increase electrical conductiv让y and intimate electrical contact with Si nanoparticles, but also provide built-in buffer voids for Si nanoparticles to expand freely without damaging the carbon layer. The present findings can provide some scientific insights into the design and the application of advanced Si-based anode materials in energy storage fields. | Le Hu Bin Luo Chenghao Wu Pengfei Hu Lianzhou Wang Haijiao Zhang | 2019 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2019,28,5: | 10
KD-S SiC_f/SiC composites with BN interface fabricated by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process显示文摘Continuous silicon carbide fiber reinforced silicon carbide matrix(SiC_f/SiC) composites are attractive candidate materials for aerospace engine system and nuclear reactor system. In this paper, SiC_f/SiC composites were fabricated by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis(PIP) process using KD-S fiber as the reinforcement and the LPVCS as the precursor, while the BN interface layer was introduced by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) process using borazine as the single precursor. The effect of the BN interface layer on the structure and properties of the SiC_f/SiC composites was comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the BN interface layer significantly improved the mechanical properties of the KD-S SiC_f/SiC composites. The flexure strength and fracture toughness of the KD-S SiC_f/SiC composites were evidently improved from 314±44.8 to 818±39.6 MPa and 8.6± 0.5 to 23.0±2.2 MPa·m^(1/2), respectively. The observation of TEM analysis displayed a turbostratic structure of the CVD-BN interface layer that facilitated the improvement of the fracture toughness of the SiC_f/SiC composites. The thermal conductivity of KD-S SiC_f/SiC composites with BN interface layer was lower than that of KD-S SiC_f/SiC composites without BN interface layer, which could be attributed to the relative low thermal conductivity of BN interface layer with low crystallinity. | Honglei WANG Shitao GAO Shuming PENG Xingui ZHOU Haibin ZHANG Xiaosong ZHOU Bin Li | 2018 | Journal of Advanced Ceramics2018,7,2: | 10
Mechanical and thermal properties of sodium silicate treated moso bamboo particles reinforced PVC composites显示文摘The main objective of this research was to study the potential of sodium silicate modification on moso bamboo particles as reinforcements for thermoplastic. Moso bamboo particles were modified with sodium silicate aqueous solutions (of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 10% concentrations). The mechanical properties of sodium silicate treated moso bamboo particles reinforced PVC composites (BPPC) were calculated and compared with raw bamboo particles filled samples. The thermal characteristics of the BPPC were studied to investigate the feasibility of sodium silicate treatment on moso bamboo particles. The particle morphology and BPPC microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of the BPPC increased before the concentration of sodium silicate solution reached 5% and got their maximum values of 15.72 MPa and 2956.80 MPa, respectively at 5% concentration. The modulus of rupture obtained the maximum value of 27.73 MPa at 2% concentration. The mechanical curve decreased as the concentration of solution went higher. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis illustrated that the sodium silicate solution treated BPPC possesses a better compatibility. More uniform dispersion of moso bamboo particles in PVC matrix was obtained after the sodium silicate treatment. Hence, the sodium silicate was a feasible and competitive agent of creating moso bamboo particles reinforced PVC composites. | WANG Hui, SHENG KuiChuan*, CHEN Jie, MAO HaiLiang & QIAN XiangQun School of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science,Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310029, China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,11: | 9

Strategies for improving the storage performance of silicon-based anodes in lithium-ion batteries显示文摘Silicon has attracted much attention as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and rich resource abundance. However, the practical battery use of Si is challenged by its low conductivity and drastic volume variation during the Li uptake/release process. Tremendous efforts have been made on shrinking the particle size of Si into nanoscale so that the volume variation could be accommodated. However, the bare nano-Si material would still pulverize upon (de)lithiation. Moreover, it shows an excessive surface area to invite unlimited growth of solid electrolyte interface that hinders the transportation of charge carriers, and an increased interparticle resistance. As a result, the Si nanoparticles gradually lose their electrical contact during the cycling process, which accounts for poor thermodynamic stability and sluggish kinetics of the anode reaction versus Li. To address these problems and improve the Li storage performance of nano-Si anode, proper structural design should be applied on the Si anode. In this perspective, we will briefly review some strategies for improving the electrochemistry versus Li of nano-Si materials and their derivatives, and show opinions on the optimal design of nanostructured Si anode for advanced LIBs. | Wei Tao Ping Wang Ya You Kyusung Park Cao-Yu Wang Yong-Ke Li Fei-Fei Cao Sen Xin | 2019 | Nano Research2019,12,8: | 9
