| 1 | Heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions by chitosan-based magnetic composite flocculants显示文摘In this study, three magnetic flocculants with different chelating groups, namely, carboxymethyl chitosan-modified Fe_(3)O_(4)flocculant(MC),acrylamide-grafted magnetic carboxymethyl chitosan flocculant(MCM),and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid copolyacrylamide-grafted magnetic carboxymethyl chitosan flocculant(MCAA)were prepared, synthesized, and characterized by photopolymerization technology. They were applied to the flocculation removal of Cr(Ⅲ),Co(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ).The effect of flocculation condition on the removal performance of Cr(Ⅲ),Co(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ)was studied.Characterization results show that the three magnetic carboxymethyl chitosan-based flocculants have been successfully prepared with good magnetic induction properties.Flocculation results show that the removal rates of MC,MCM,and MCAA on Cr(Ⅲ)are 51.79%,82.33%,and 91.42%,respectively,under the conditions of 80 mg/L flocculant,pH value of 6,reaction time of 1.5 hr,G value of 200 s^(-1),and precipitation magnetic field strength of 120 mT.The removal rates of Co(Ⅱ)by MC,MCM,and MCAA are 54.33%,84.99%,and 90.49%,respectively.The removal rates of Pb(Ⅱ)by MC,MCM,and MCAA are 61.54%,91.32%,and 95.74%,respectively.MCAA shows good flocculation performance in composite heavy metal-simulated wastewater. The magnetic carboxymethyl chitosan-based flocculant shows excellent flocculation performance in removing soluble heavy metals. This research provides guidance and ideas for the development of efficient and low-cost flocculation technology to remove heavy metals in wastewater. | Xuefeng Xiao Yuanyuan Yu Yongjun Sun Xing Zheng Aowen Chen | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,10: | 9 |
| 2 | Multi-strategy engineering greatly enhances provitamin A carotenoid accumulation and stability in Arabidopsis seeds显示文摘Staple grains with low levels of provitamin A carotenoids contribute to the global prevalence of vitamin A deficiency and therefore are the main targets for provitamin A biofortification. However, carotenoid stability during both seed maturation and postharvest storage is a serious concern for the full benefits of carotenoid biofortified grains. In this study,we utilized Arabidopsis as a model to establish car-otenoid biofortification strategies in seeds. We discovered that manipulation of carotenoid biosynthetic activity by seed-specific expression of Phytoene synthase(PSY)increases both provitamin A and total carotenoid levels but the increased carotenoids are prone to degradation during seed maturation and storage, consistent with previous studies of provitamin A biofortified grains. In contrast, stacking with Orange(OR^(His)),a gene that initiates chromopl ast biogenesis, dramatically enhances provitamin A and total carotenoid content and stability.Up to 65-and 10-fold increases of β-carotene and total car-otenoids,res pectively, with provitamin A carotenoids composing over 63%were observed in the seeds containing OR^(His) and PSY.Co-expression of Homogen tisate geranylgeranyl transferase(HGGT)with OR^(His) and PSY further increases carotenoid accumulation and stability during seed maturation and storage.Moreover,knocking-out of B-carotene hydroxylase 2(BCH2)by CRISPR/Cas9 not only potentially facilitates β-carotene accumulation but also minimizes the negative effect of carotenoid over production on seed germi nation. Our findings provide new insights into various processes on carotenoid accu-mulation and stability in seeds and establish a multiplexed strategy to simultaneously target carotenoid biosynthesis, turnover, and stable storage for carotenoid biofortification in crop seeds. | Tianhu Sun Qinlong Zhu Ziqing Wei Lauren AOwens Tara Fish Hyojin Kim Theodore W.Thannhauser Edgar B.Cahoon Li Li | 2021 | aBIOTECH2021,2,3: | 2 |

| 5 | Whole-milk consumption decreases the risk of inflammatory bowel disease:a two-sample Mendelian rand omization analysis显示文摘Objective: The impact of dairy fat on inflammatory bowel disease remained inconclusive. We aimed to compare the effects of whole-milk and skimmed-milk consumption on the risk of inflammatory bowel disease using a Mendelian randomization analysis. Methods: We conducted a genome-wide association study of the preference for whole versus skimmed milk using data for 20,200 whole-milk consumers and 67,847 skimmed-milk consumers from the UK Biobank. The lead single nucleotide polymorphisms in the associated loci were identified at the genome-wide significance level, and were further employed as instrumental variables for whole-milk preference. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis with whole-milk preference as the exposure and inflammatory bowel disease as the outcome. The pleiotropic effects and heterogeneity of the instrumental variables were estimated using Mendelian randomization-Egger regression and CochranQ test, respectively. This study was conducted using the UKB resources under the application '53536' . The UK Biobank was approved by the North West Multi-center Research Ethics Committee, the National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care in England and Wales, and the Community Health Index Advisory Group in Scotland. Results: The genome-wide association study identified five lead nucleotide polymorphisms associated with whole-milk preference. Mendelian randomization indicated that whole-milk preference significantly decreased the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (β=-1.735,P=0.048). Of the two subtypes, whole-milk preference was associated with a lower risk of Crohn disease (β=-2.549,P=0.032), but had no significant effect on the risk of ulcerative colitis (β=-1.002,P=0.44).Conclusion: Consumption of whole-milk fat may protect against Crohn disease, compared with skimmed milk. This conclusion was based on causal inference in a cohort study, and further validation in randomized controlled trials is warranted. | Jiuling Li Haoxue Zhu Aowen Tian Ying Guo Xiaoxuan Zhao Miaoran Zhang Lanlan Chen Jianping Wen Jianli Yang Baiyu Qi Peng Chen | 2021 | Journal of Bio-X Research2021,4,3: | 0 |
