A review on promising phytochemical, nutritional and glycemic control studies on Moringa oleifera Lam. in tropical and sub-tropical regions显示文摘Plants have provided sources to find novel compounds. These plants are being used as therapeutic purposes since the birth of mankind. The traditional healers normally utilize medicinal plants as crude drugs while scientists using the folk claim as guides to explore medicinal plants. Moringa oleifera is a famous edible plant having therapeutic and nutritive values. The present study was designed to cumulate the research data regarding to what extent, phytochemical, nutritional and glycemic control studies has been explored using its different extracts. The articles indicated that the powder, aqueous, methanol and ethanol extracts of Moringa oleifera(leaves, pods, seeds, stem and root bark) have significant therapeutic herbal potential to treat diabetes mellitus. Collectively, the mechanism behind is intestinal glucose inhibition, insulin release as well as decrease in insulin resistance probably regeneration of b-cells of pancreas, increase in glutathione and reduction in malondialdehyde. Conclusively, this article give descriptive information about antidiabetic effect, claimed marker compounds and proposed antihyperglycemic mechanism of a single plant. It can be suggested a potential herbal source to treat diabetes mellitus as being widely accepted by major population as nutrition and therapeutic agent.Hafiz Irfan Muhammad Mohd Zaini Asmawi Nurzalina Abdul Karim Khan 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,10:8
Hypoglycemic and anti-hyperglycemic study of Gynura procumbens leaf extracts显示文摘Objective:To study the antidiabetic activity of Gynura procumbens(G.procumbens)used in the traditional management of diabetes in Southern Asia.Methods:G.procumbens leaves were extracted sequentially with graded percentage of ethanol in water(95%,75%,50%,25%and 0%),and the extracts were tested for antidiabetic activity using acute(7 h),subcutaneous glucose tolerance test and sub-chronic(14 d)test in non-diabetic and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The extracts were further subjected to phytochemical studies. Results:In acute dose(1 g/kg),the extracts significantly lowered fasting blood glucose(FBG)in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats(P<0.05).However,the FBG-lowering effect of the 25%extract compared to the other extracts, was rapid(47%after 2 h)and the highest:53%,53%and 60%in the 3rd,5th,and 7th h,respectively(P<0.05),comparable only to the effect of metformin.Furthermore, the extracts suppressed peak FBG in subcutaneous glucose tolerance test, but only the 0%and 25%extracts,and metformin sustained the decrease until the 90th min(P<0.05).Moreover,in the 14 days study, the 25%extract exerted the highest FBG-lowering effect, namely 49.38%and 65.43%on days 7 and 14,respectively(P<0.05),similar to the effect of metformin(46.26%and 65.42%).Total flavanoid and phenolic contents in the extracts were found to decrease with increase in polarity of extraction solvents. The composition of reference compounds(chlorogenic acid, rutin, astragalin and kaempferol-3-O-nrtinoside)followed a similar trend.Conclusions:G.procumbens contains antidiabetic principles, most extracted in 25%ethanol.Interaction among active components appears to determine the antidiabetic efficacy, achieved likely by a metformin-like mechanism.Khalid Algariri Kuong Y Meng Item J Atangwho Mohd Z Asmawi Amirin Sadikun Vikneswaran Murugaiyah Norhyati Ismail 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,5:4
Antioxidants in aqueous extract of Myristica fragrans(Houtt.) suppress mitosis and cyclophosphamide-induced chromosomal aberrations in Allium cepa L.cells显示文摘In this study,freeze-dried water extract from the leaves of Myristica fragrans(Houtt.) was tested for mutagenic and antimutagenic potentials using the Allium cepa assay.Freeze-dried water extract alone and its combination with cyclophosphamide(CP)(50 mg/kg) were separately dissolved in tap water at 500,1000,2000,and 4000 mg/kg.Onions(A.cepa) were suspended in the solutions and controls for 48 h in the dark.Root tips were prepared for microscopic evaluation.2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radicals' scavenging power of the extract was tested using butylated hydroxyanisole(BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT) as standards.Water extract of Myristica fragrans scavenged free radicals better than BHA,but worse than BHT.The extract alone,as well as in combination with CP suppressed cell division, and induced chromosomal aberrations that were insignificantly different from the negative control(P≤0.05).However,cytotoxic and mutagenic actions of CP were considerably suppressed. The observed effects on cell division and chromosomes of A.cepa may be principally connected to the antioxidant properties of the extract. The obtained results suggest mitodepressive and antimutagenic potentials of water extract of the leaves of M.fragrans as desirable properties of a promising anticancer agent.Akeem AKINBORO Kamaruzaman Bin MOHAMED Mohd Zaini ASMAWI Shaida Fariza SULAIMAN Othman Ahmad SOFIMAN 2011Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2011,12,11:4
Decomposition and Reformulation of Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction:A Vasodilatory Approach显示文摘Objective To decompose and reformulate Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction(BBT) in order to optimize its ratio for vasodilatory effect. The fingerprints of these six component herbs were also studied via Tri-step FTIR analysis. Methods The herbal components of BBT were extracted separately with different solvents, such as 95%ethanol,50%ethanol,and distilled water. The vasodilatory effect of the extracts was studied using the in vitro pre-contracted aortic ring model.Among these extracts, the water extracts of Pinellia ternata[PT(W)]and Citri reticulatae[CR(W)],50%ethanol extracts of Castrodia elata[GE(50)]and Clycyrrhiza uralensis[GU(50)],and 95%ethanol extracts of Atractylodes macrocephala[AM(E)],and Poria cocos[PC(E)]were selected for the orthogonal stimulus-response compatibility group study due to their high effectiveness in vasodilation. Results The best combination ratio(G2) was GE(50),GU(50),AM(E),PC(E),CR(W),and PT(W) at EC_0,EC_5,EC_5,EC_5,EC_5,and EC_5,with EC_(50) of(0.06 ± 0.01) mg/mL.Comparison between the vasodilatory effects of extracts derived from G2 and BBT were also studied. From the results, the 50%ethanol extract following G2 ratio was found to be most potent extract with the highest vasodilatory effect compared with other extracts derived from G2 or BBT,with EC_(50) of(0.05 ±0.005) mg/mL.Conclusion The optimum ratio and appropriate extraction method for the new BBT formulae are obtained.G2 is determined as the best formulae with the highest potency in producing the vasodilatory effect on isolated rat aortic rings. The results obtained suggest that 50%ethanol is found to be the best solvent to extract the vasoactive compounds of G2 in order to exhibit the highest efficacy of vasodilatory effect.Chu Shan Tan Yean Chun Loh Yung Sing Ch'ng Mariam Ahmad Mohd.Zaini Asmawi Mun Fei Yam 2017Chinese Herbal Medicines2017,9,2:3

Antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of Nypa fruticans Wurmb. vinegar sample from Malaysia显示文摘Objective: To study the antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of nipa palm vinegar(NPV) used in traditional Malay medicine for treating diabetes. Methods: NPV was extracted using liquid-liquid extraction method and the obtained samples were subjected to antidiabetic studies using normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat models whereas antidoxidant activities were investigated via in vitro antioxidant tests namely 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid free radicals scavenging activities and the reducing power assay. Results: Single administration of NPV and its extracts were not effective in both normal and diabetic rats. In intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test, NPV and its aqueous extract showed significant blood glucose lowering effect. In the sub-acute study, compared with the diabetic control, aqueous extract of NPV showed the most notable blood glucose lowering effect(56.6%) and a significant improvement in serum insulin levels(79.8%, P<0.05). To assess NPV's antioxidant activity, three in vitro antioxidant tests were employed: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid free radical-scavenging assays, and the reducing power assay. Ethyl acetate extract had the greatest antioxidant potential and content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. A linear positive correlation between the antioxidant parameters was observed. Chemical profiling analysis of aqueous extract of NPV revealed the presence of acetic acid(35.25%), the main active constituent which significantly contributed to the observed antidiabetic activity. Conclusions: Aqueous extract of NPV possesses antihyperglycaemic activities comparable to the metformin, while the ethyl acetate extract precipitated significant antioxidant effects attributable to its high phenolic content. These findings suggest that antioxidant compounds of NPV do not contribute much towards the overall observed antidiabetic effect.Nor Adlin Yusoff Mun Fei Yam Hooi Kheng Beh Khairul Niza Abdul Razak Tri Widyawati Roziahanim Mahmud Mariam Ahmad Mohd Zaini Asmawi 2015Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2015,8,8:1
In vivo hypoglycemic investigation, antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic potentials of Pereskia bleo Kunth. in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective: To elucidate the in vivo hypoglycemic capability, antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities of Pereskia bleo(Kunth) leaves extracts and bioactive fraction. Methods: The various solvent extracts of Pereskia bleo were investigated for the hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activities using a relevant in vivo normal rat model and streptozotocininduced diabetic rat model with glibenclamide and metformin utilized as positive controls. The effects of the most potent extract and its bioactive fraction on the insulin level, lipid profile and body weight of the diabetic rats were also analyzed. Results: All the extracts showed no hypoglycemic effect while petroleum ether, chloroform and aqueous extracts demonstrated significant(P<0.05) reduction in blood sugar level in the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test. Aqueous extract and aqueous fraction significantly(P<0.05) reduced the blood glucose level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats as early as day 6 compared to the diabetic control as well as significantly restored the serum insulin of diabetic rats. Moreover, the aqueous extract and aqueous fraction disclosed a significant(P<0.05) reduction in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein levels. An elevation in high-density lipoprotein as well as improved body weight loss of the diabetic rats were also observed. Conclusions: In summary, Pereskia bleo appears effective in the management of diabetes and correlated impairments arising from high blood sugar level. Further studies will possibly bring about the discovery of effective and secure plant derived antidiabetic drugs.Anis Najwa Abdul Rani Roziahanim Mahmud Norliyana Amran Mohd Zaini Asmawi Nornisah Mohamed Shanmugapriya Perumal 2019Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2019,9,2:1
