Historical trends of heavy metal contamination and their sources in lacustrine sediment from Xijiu Lake,Taihu Lake Catchment,China显示文摘Concentrations of Cd,Cr,Cu,Pb,Zn and Hg in Xijiu Lake sediment from the Taihu Lake catchment,China, were analyzed.Their contamination state was investigated based on the geoaccumulation index and enrichment factors.Statistical analysis was used to differentiate the anthropogenic versus natural sources of heavy metals (HMs),and the anthropogenic accumulation fluxes were calculated to quantify anthropogenic contribution to HMs.The results indicated that the lake sediment had been heavily contaminated by Cd,enrichment of Zn and Hg was at a relatively high level, while that of Cu and Pb was in the lower-to-moderate level and Cr was in the low enrichment level.Sources of Cr in the sediment were mainly from natural inputs, while other metals, especially Cd,were predominantly derived from anthropogenic sources. In the past century, anthropogenic accumulation fluxes of Pb,Zn and Hg increased by 0.1-47.3 mg/(cm2·yr),2.4-398.1 mg/(cm2·yr),and 3.7-110.3 ng/(m2·yr),respectively,accounting for most inputs of HMs entering the sediment. The contamination state of HMs varied with industrial development of the catchment, which demonstrated that contamination started in the early 20th century, reached the maximal level between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s,and decreased a little after the implementation of constraints on high contamination industries, although the contamination of some HMs,such as Cd,Zn and Hg,is still at high levels.Haijian Bing Yanhong Wu Zhaobin Sun Shuchun Yao 2011Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,10:18
Assessment of heavy metal enrichment and its human impact in lacustrine sediments from four lakes in the mid-low reaches of the Yangtze River, China显示文摘Sediments from four lakes in the mid-low reaches of the Yangtze River, Taibai Lake, Longgan Lake, Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake, were chosen to evaluate their enrichment state and history. The state of heavy metal enrichment was at a low level in the sediment of Taibai Lake and Longgan Lake. The enrichment state of Co, Cr and Ni was also low in the sediment of Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake, while Cu, Pb and Zn enrichment reached a higher level. Mass accumulation fluxes were calculated to quantitatively evaluate the anthropogenic contribution to heavy metals in the sediment. The anthropogenic accumulation fluxes were lower in the sediment of Taibai Lake and Longgan Lake compared with the other two lakes, where heavy metals, especially Cu, Pb and Zn, were mainly from anthropogenic sources. Heavy metal accumulation did not vary greatly in the sediment of Taibai Lake and Longgan Lake, while that in Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake increased since the 1950s and substantially increased since the 1980s, although a decrease occurred since 2000 AD in Xijiu Lake. Heavy metal enrichment was strongly related to human activities in the catchment. The development of urbanization and industrialization was much more rapid in the catchments of Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake than of the other two lakes, and thus large amounts of anthropogenically sourced heavy metals were discharged into the lakes, which resulted in a higher contamination risk. However, human activities in the Longgan Lake and Taibai Lake catchments mainly involved agriculture, which contributed a relatively small portion of heavy metals to the lakes.Haijian Bing Yanhong Wu Enfeng Liu Xiangdong Yang 2013Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,7:14
Strength and deformation behaviors of bedded rock mass under bolt reinforcement显示文摘The mechanism of bolt support is an important topic in mining engineering and slope treatment. The artificial material and loading system were self-developed to study the influence of bedding cohesion and bolt number on the anchoring behavior of bedded rock mass. The results show that, both peak strength and elasticity modulus increase gradually with the increase of bedding cohesion and bolt number. The axial stress–strain curve of bedded rock mass under the reinforcement of bolts presents the features of strain-softening and secondary strengthening. Finally, anchoring behavior of bedded rock mass with different bolt numbers was simulated by using FLAC3 D numerical program and the results were compared with the experimental results. This study can provide certain bases to the stability control and support design of bedded rock mass in roadway.Wenxin Zhu Hongwen Jing Lijun Yang Bing Pan Haijian Su 2018International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2018,28,4:7
Soil phosphorus bioavailability assessed by XANES and Hedley sequential fractionation technique in a glacier foreland chronosequence in Gongga Mountain, Southwestern China显示文摘The primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems is influenced by soil phosphorus bioavailability, which depends largely on chemical fractions of phosphorus. The sequential fractionation technique developed by Hedley et al. or its subsequent modification is a well-known method to determine soil phosphorus forms. Hedley sequential fractionation technique separates the phosphorus into fractions based on their different chemical solubilities in extractants with certain chemical properties. Recently, synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure(XANES) spectroscopy has been employed to measure soil phosphorus species directly and non-invasively. The XANES method provides information concerning local structure and chemical information of target elements at a molecular level. Thus, it can distinguish phosphorus fractions bound by metal oxides or hydroxides(such as Fe, Al, and Ca). In this present work, the phosphorus speciation of topsoil along a glacial foreland chronosequence in Gongga Mountain is determined using these two methods. The changes in soil phosphorus bioavailability along the 120-year-old chronosequence are assessed based on comparisons of the results obtained by these two methods. The results indicate that Hedley sequential fractionation technique shows a greater ability to determine soil bioavailable phosphorus(Resin-P and NaCHO3-P), while XANES is effective in distinguishing phosphorus bound by metal compounds. In the chronosequence, Ca- and Al-bound phosphorus were derived mainly from primary minerals, whose phosphorus contents decreased within 120 years of moraine weathering and soil development. The content of soil bioavailable phosphorus increased rapidly after 30 years since deglaciation. The increasing phosphorus bioavailability promoted the colonizing and primary succession vegetation.WU YanHong Jrg PRIETZEL ZHOU Jun BING HaiJian LUO Ji YU Dong SUN ShouQin LIANG JianHong SUN HongYang 2014Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,8:6
Geochronology of recent lake sediments from Longgan Lake, middle reach of the Yangtze River, influenced by disturbance of human activities显示文摘The impacts of human activities in Longgan Lake region on the distribution of 210Pb in lake sediment made it difficult to establish geochronological sequence. However, environmental proxies recorded these human activities and could be used as time marker to check 210Pb dating results. Based on the analysis of 210Pbexc distribution in cores LS-1 and LGL-1, and in combination with the human activities records in grain-size and element concentration, the sedimentation rates in the upper layers of these two cores were determined to be 0.19 and 0.23 cm/a respectively. The MAR (mass accumulation rates) of these two cores demonstrated that natural condition, such as precipitation and runoffs, led to the variation of MAR before human disturbance, and human activities controlled the sedimentary processes afterwards, which obviously reduced the particles influx into the lakes. During 1940s when human activity had not changed the water system within the catchment, 210Pb activity was abnormally strong in lakes along middle to lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which might be attributed to less precipitation and can be used as a time marker for geochronological research.WU YanHong LIU EnFeng BING HaiJian YANG XiangDong XUE Bin XIA WeiLan 2010Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,8:4
Trace metal contamination in soils from mountain regions across China:spatial distribution, sources, and potential drivers显示文摘Trace metal contamination in soils is a threat with an uncertain limit to maintain planet safety, and the issue of trace metal contamination in mountain soils is still of low concerned. In this study,we assessed the contamination of six trace metals(Cd,Cr,Cu,Ni,Pb,and Zn)in mountain soils across China and deciphered the potential drivers of their spatial distribution. The results showed that concentrations of Cd and Pb decreased significantly with soil depth, and their concentrations were markedly higher in northwest, south, and southwest China than elsewhere.Among the metals,Cd was the priority for control with moderate to heavy contamination, followed by Pb,whereas the other metals did not show evident contamination. The altitudinal pattern and isotopic tracing revealed that the significant enrichment and marked contamination of Cd and Pb in surface soils were primarily attributed to deposition through long-range transboundary atmospheric transport and condensation.Ore mining, nonferrous smelting, and coal and fuel combustion were identified as primary anthropogenic sources of the Cd and Pb.Soil organic matter content,pH,and soil forming processes directly determined the accumulation of trace metals in the soils, and orographic effects, including local climate, vegetation composition, and canopy filtering, regulated the spatial distribution of the metals. This study highlights the significance of soil Cd contamination in mountains, which are considered of low concern, and suggests that long-term monitoring of trace metal contamination is necessary to improve biogeochemical models that evaluate the responses of the mountain critical zone to future human-and climate-induced environmental changes.Haijian Bing Shaojun Qiu Xin Tian Jun Li He Zhu Yanhong Wu Gan Zhang 2021Soil Ecology Letters2021,3,3:2
Incubation experiment demonstrates effects of carbon and nitrogen on microbial phosphate-solubilizing function显示文摘Dear Editor,Phosphorus(P)ultimately comes from rock weathering in natural ecosystems(Porder et al.,2007),and thus solubilization of rock phosphate plays a crucial ecological role in P supply for the ecosystems.Especially, microbial solubilization of rock phosphate is a vital process for the replenishment of available P in alpine ecosystems where the weathering degree of soil is low.The phosphate solubilizing microorganisms(PSM),major participants in the process, are directlyHongyang Sun Yanhong Wu Jun Zhou Haijian Bing 2017Science China(Life Sciences)2017,60,4:2

Air-drying changes the distribution of Hedley phosphorus pools in forest soils显示文摘Hedley labile phosphorus(P)pools in soil tend to be several times larger than annual forest requirements, even in highly weathered soils characterized by P limitation. The discrepancy between plant and soil P status could be partly attributable to the frequently adopted air-drying pretreatment that tends to increase soil P solubility. In this study, the effects of air-drying on the distribution of Hedley P fractions were examined using soils collected under 4 forest types at Gongga Mountain, southwestern China. The results showed that the microbial biomass P(Pmic)in the organic horizon decreased markedly after air-drying.The concentrations of Hedley labile P in the air-dried samples were 31%–73%more than those in the field-moist samples.Consequently, the air-drying-induced increments of Hedley labile P pools in the surface soil horizons were 0.8–3.8 times the annual plant P requirements. The organic horizon was more susceptible to the air-drying-induced increases in Hedley labile P than the mineral horizon, probably because of the stronger release of Pmicand disruption of soil organic matter. The quality of P,indexed by the ratio of Hedley labile P to slowly cycling P,shifted in favor of the Hedley labile fractions after air-drying,further revealing that air-drying changed the distribution of Hedley P pools in forest soils. These indicated that the effects of air-drying could not be ignored when interpreting the discrepancy between the P status of plants and the Hedley labile P pools in forest soils. To more efficiently evaluate the P status in forest soils via the Hedley fractionation procedure, the use of field-moist soils is recommended.Jipeng WANG Yanhong WU Jun ZHOU Haijian BING Hongyang SUN Ji LUO Shengyan PU 2020Pedosphere2020,30,2:1
