| 1 | Etiological role of brucellosis in autoimmune hepatitis显示文摘To show that brucellosis may trigger autoimmune hepatitis(AIH), in addition to nonspecific liver involvement and toxic hepatitis, due to a class effect of tetracycline family used for treatment. We present a female patient admitted to our hospital due to partially improved fatigue and elevated liver enzymes following doxycycline and streptomycin usage for brucellosis. Brucellosis is endemic in our country, Turkey. It may involve any organ in the body. Liver is frequently involved. Doxycycline used for treatment occasionally may lead to hepatotoxicity. AIH is a necroinflammatory disease of the liver. Certain drugs (e.g. Minocycline), toxins, and viruses (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, EBV, etc.) can trigger AIH. Only one case of AIH probably caused by doxycycline and brucellosis was reported. We discuss the relationship between brucellosis, AIH, and hepatotoxicity of doxycycline. | 2 | Relation of eye dominancy with color vision discrimination performance ability in normal subjects显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the performance of dominant eye(DE) for color vision discrimination ability among the medical students with normal color vision.METHODS:Total of 50 students studying at Baskent University Faculty of Medicine,including 31 males(62%) and 19 females(38%),with visual acuity of 20/20 and without congenital color vision deficiency(CCVD) evaluated by Ishihara pseudoisochromatic plate test(IPPT) were recruited for this prospective comparative study upon their voluntary participation.DE was determined by the Gündogan Method.The color discrimination ability was examined with the FarnsworthMunsell 100 hue(FM100) test.Test was applied by two days interval to all subjects for the three times while two eyes(TE),right eye(RE) and left eye(LE) were seeing for detecting red-green(r/g),blue-yellow(b/y) local color spectral regions error scores.The error scores were evaluated for both in DE and non-dominant(NDE).P values below 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant.RESULTS:The students aged 21.18±2.52 years(mean±SD).Without sex difference the RE and the LE dominancy were found 22(44%) and 28(56%) respectively and FM 100 test total error scores of DE in both r/g-b/y regions were found without gender difference 24.12±14.70,34.68±18.95,respectively.For the NDE in both,r/gb/y regions error scores without gender difference were 32.20±19.21,36.24±17.56,respectively.The difference of total error scores between the DE and NDE was found as 58.80±29.92,68.44±31.46.The statistical differences among the DE and the NDE in r/g local region and total error scores were found significant in both genders(P<0.05,P<0.001). | 4 | An Invasive Succulent Plant (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) Influences Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Mineralization in a Neotropical Semiarid Zone显示文摘It has long been recognized that plant invasions may alter carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) cycles, but the direction and magnitude of such alterations have been rarely quantified. In this study, we quantified the effects caused by the invasion of a noxious exotic plant,Kalanchoe daigremontiana(Crassulaceae), on C and N mineralization and enzymatic and microbial activities in the soil of a semiarid locality in Venezuela. We compared soil parameters associated with these processes(C and N mineralization time and the cumulative values, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity, and activities of dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, glucosaminidase, and urease) between invaded and adjacent non-invaded sites. In addition, correlations among these parameters and the soil physical-chemical properties were also examined to determine if a positive feedback exists between nutrient availability and K. daigremontiana invasion. Overall,our results showed that C mineralization and transformation of organic compounds to NH_4^+ were favored at sites colonized by K.daigremontiana. With this species, we found the highest cumulative amounts of NH_4^+-N and C and the lowest mineralization time.These results could be explained by higher activities of urease and glucosaminidase in soils under the influence of K. daigremontiana.In addition, higher amounts of organic matter and moisture content in invaded soils might favor C and N mineralization. In conclusion,invasion of Neotropical semiarid zones by K. daigremontiana may influence the chemical and biological properties of the soils covered by this species, increasing nutrient bioavailability, which, in time, can facilitate the invasion process. | Ileana HERRERA Jose R.
