Distribution of meiofaunal abundance in relation to environmental factors in Beibu Gulf,South China Sea显示文摘This study aims to explore the distribution of meiofaunal abundance in relation to environmental factors in the Beibu Gulf,a natural semi-enclosed part of the South China Sea,surrounded by China and Vietnam.Meiofauna and ten benthic environmental factors were determined at 27 sampling stations in the Beibu Gulf in four surveys during 2006-2007.The results show a clear geographical trend in meiofaunal abundance, water depth, salinity and clay content. The meiofaunal abundance and the clay content decreased, whereas the water depth and the salinity increased from the north to the south of the Gulf. The percentage of meiofaunal abundance in the 0-2 cm layer increased, whereas in the 2-5 cm and 5-10 cm layers it decreased from the north to the south of the Gulf.Correlation analysis show significant negative correlations between meiofaunal abundance and water depth, benthic temperature, salinity and pH,but significant positive correlations between meiofaunal abundance and dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a and clay content.CAI Lizhe FU Sujing YANG Jie ZHOU Xiping 2012Acta Oceanologica Sinica2012,31,6:17
Studies on the role of marine bacteria in the upwelling ecosystem——Ⅰ.Bacterial biomass in the upwelling regions显示文摘-Six cruises were carried out off the south bank of Fujian - Taiwan during the period of December 21, 1987 to November 15, 1988 to estimate the contribution of bacterial biomass carbon (BBC) to the totai particulate organic pools using epifluorescent microscopic technique. The results show that the standing crop of bacteria fluctuated from 0. 95 to 66. 60 mg /m3 (dry weight). Upwelling phenomena appeared in the region around Nanpeng Island in summer while in the region of Waixie in all seasons. The average value of BBC was 27. 60(±6. 08)mg/m3and 21. 32 (±2. 34) mg/m3 respectively. The seasonal and spatial distribution is discussed in relation to environmental factors as well as upwelling phenomena. The role of bacteria in the flow of material and energy in the upwelling ecosystem is emphasized.Zheng Tianling, Cai Lizhe and Jiang Xianquan Environmental Science Research Center, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China Department of Oceanography, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China 1993Acta Oceanologica Sinica1993,12,2:14
Species composition and distribution of marine nematode community in the North Taiwan Strait显示文摘Marine free-living nematodes were investigated at 13 sampling stations divided into three transects in the northern Taiwan Strait in February 1998. One hundred species of marine nematodes belonging to 91 Genera 28 Families 3 Orders were identified and were first recorded in the northern Taiwan Strait. The dominant species were Vasostoma sp., Sabatieria sp. 1, Linhystera sp. 1, Spilophorella sp., Daptonema sp., Halalaimus sp. and Dorylaimopsis variabilis. Their main densities were all over 4 950 ind./m2. According to mean density at transects, marine nematode density decreased from coastal Weitou to off Minjiang Estuary, which was similar to polychaete distribution in northern Taiwan Strait. The selective deposit feeder (1A) was the dominant food type of marine nematodes in the northern Taiwan Strait, but non-selective deposit feeders (1B) and epigrowth feeders (2A) occupied high proportion, indicating diverse feeding types of marine nematodes in the northern Taiwan Strait. Some environmental factors such as currents are discussed.Cai Lizhe, Hong Huasheng, Zou Chaozhong, Fang Shaohua, Lu Xiaomei, Zhang Yueping (1. 4Comparison of Meiofaunal Abundance in Two Mangrove Wetlands in Tong'an Bay, Xiamen, China显示文摘To compare meiofaunal community in the two mangrove wetlands in Tong'an Bay, Xiamen, China, and probe the response of meiofauna to high organic matter, sampling was carried out in Fenglin and Xiang'an mangrove wetlands in the bay. The results showed that the Ne/Co ratio(nematode to benthic copepod) and organic matter in Fenglin mangrove wetland were higher than those in Xiang'an mangrove wetland. The meiofaunal abundance in Fenglin mangrove was all lower than that in Xiang'an mangrove wetland in summer, autumn and spring, while the meiofaunal abundance in Fenglin mangrove was higher than that in Xiang'an mangrove wetland in winter. Two-way ANOVA results showed that the meiofaunal abundance and nematode abundance were significantly different between regions, seasons and region×season. With all the results in the present study, we confirmed that the positive response of meiofaunal and nematode abundance were only detected for medium organic matter contents according to the Xiang'an wetland's level, and that the distribution of meiofaunal abundance would be influenced by sand content. Higher copepod abundance and lower N/C value usually suggest better environmental quality.ZHOU Xiping CAI Lizhe FU Sujing 2015Journal of Ocean University of China2015,14,5:4
Current status of bacteriological parameters and DOC/POC in Xiamen coastal waters显示文摘The surface and bottom waters samples were collected from six locations in Xiamen west-em sea. The quantified estimation of bacterial production (3H-thymidine method) and observation ofbacterial heterotrophic activity (14C-glucose method) have been made in order to have a better under-standing of the role of marine bacteria and their activities. The results showed that the mean value ofbacterial heterotrophic activity was 9 × 108 cells/(L. h) in the surface waters and 2.6 × 108 cells/( L. h)in the bottom waters. The mean value of bacterial production was 38 × 108 cells/( L. h) in the surfacewaters and 7.1 × 108 cells/(L.h) in the bottom waters. The relationship between bacterial production, heterotrophic activity, POC and DOC measured during this survey were discussed. The good under-standing of the relationship between bacteria activity and total coliform was addressed.Khalid Maskaoui, Tianling Zheng , Huasheng Hong Zhiming Yu, Zhong Hu, Yun Tian, Lizhe Cai School of Life Sciences, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, ChinaKey Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science of SED, Xiamen 361005, ChinaKey Laboratory of Marine Ecology & Environmental Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao 266071, China + Corresponding author:86-592-2183217,Fax:86-592-2181510. 6Secondary Production of Macrobenthos in Mangrove Area of Tong'an Bay,China显示文摘Studies on secondary production lead to a better understanding of the functions of the macrobenthic ecosystem.Basedon the macrobenthic data obtained at 6 sampling stations from April 2006 to January 2007,Brey's(1990)empirical formula wasapplied to calculate the secondary production of macrobenthos in the mangrove area of Tong'an Bay.The results showed that themean annual secondary production of macrobenthos was 13.24 gAFDWm-2-a-1.The mean secondary production in the mangrovehabitat was 12.22 gAFDWm-2-a-1,lower than that in the non-mangrove habitat, which was 15.29 gAFDWm-2-a-1.Two possible rea-sons existed for this difference.First, mollusk and crustacean, which contribute more to the secondary production, probably benefitfrom longer inundation period in the non-mangrove habitat.Second, the higher organic matter in the mangrove habitat results in hy-poxia in the bottom sediment, which may decrease the secondary production. The annual mean production-to-biomass(P/B)ratio inTong'an Bay was 1.17,with a ratio of 1.27 in the mangrove habitat and 0.96 in the non-mangrove habitat, which was coincident withthe much higher density of Limnodriloides sp.and Corophium sp.in the mangrove habitat than in the non-mangrove habitat.Themaximum secondary production and P/B ratio of macrobenthos both appeared at sampling station FL2 in April,2006(namelyApril-FL2)with values of 31.38 gAFDWm-2-a-1and 2.20,respectively.The macrobenthic secondary production in Tong'an Bay islower than those in other intertidal studies except that in Haitan Strait, the reason being the different sediment properties. The P/Bratio in Tong'an Bay was the lowest due to the high proportion of crustaceans in the macrobenthic community.ZHOU Xiping CAI Lizhe 2010Journal of Ocean University of China2010,9,2:2

Spatiotemporal variations of benthic macrofaunal community in the Xiamen Amphioxus Nature Reserve, eastern South China Sea显示文摘In order to realize the spatiotemporal variations of benthic macrofaunal communities at the'Amphioxus Sand'habitat, six surveys including four seasons and three consecutive summers(i.e.,2014,2015 and 2016)were conducted in two core sites,i.e.,Huangcuo(HC)and Nanxian-Shibaxian(NX),in the Xiamen Amphioxus Nature Reserve in China.A total of 155 species of macrofauna were recorded, therein, polychaetes were dominant in terms of species number and density.Significant spatiotemporal variations of macrofaunal communities were observed. The density of polychaetes and the biomass of molluscs in the HC site were higher than those in the NX site.Macrofauna were more diverse and abundant in the cold seasons(winter and spring)than that in the warm seasons(summer and autumn). The annual variations of macrofaunal communities may be attributed to the changes in sediment texture among the three years of the survey. The variations in macrofaunal communities were mainly related to the proportion of polychaetes within the community. In addition, the density of amphioxus(include Branchiostoma japonicum and B.belcheri)was negatively correlated to that of polychaetes, bivalves, and crustaceans.Amphioxus was less likely to be found in the sediments with higher silt and clay content.Five biotic indices including Margaref’s richness index(d),Peilou’s evenness index(J′),Shannon-Wiener diversity index(H′),AMBI and M-AMBI were calculated in the present study.AMBI seems suitable in assessing benthic health at the'Amphioxus Sand'habitat, and a potential risk of ecological health in Xiamen Amphioxus Nature Reserve should be aware.Yiyong Rao Lizhe Cai Wenjun Li Xinwei Chen Deyuan Yang 2020Acta Oceanologica Sinica2020,39,6:1

Comparison of the Macrozoobenthic Community and Sedimentary Environment with and Without Horseshoe Crab Presence in the Crocodile Island Intertidal Zone,Xiamen,China显示文摘In order to compare the macrozoobenthic community and sedimentary environment with and without the presence of horseshoe crabs, the benthic macrofauna, sediment grain size, chromium(Cr),cobalt(Co),nickel(Ni),polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAHs),organic carbon and nitrogen were seasonally investigated at site A(with horseshoe crab presence),sites B and C(without horseshoe crab presence)in the Crocodile Island intertidal zone in Xiamen from June 2018 to July 2019.The results showed that most of the community parameters of benthic macrofauna, population parameters of common benthic macrofauna and environmental parameters were significantly different at the sites with horseshoe crab versus non-horseshoe crab sites.A two-way ANOVA test showed that the densities of Ceratonereis erythraeensis and Sigambra hanaokai had significant site variation.Cluster and nonmetric multi-dimensional scaling(NMDS)analysis showed the community composition of benthic macrofauna was significantly different among the three sampling sites over four seasons. The mean sand content at site A(64.32%)was higher than those at site B(36.01%)and site C(18.86%).Conversely,the mean contents of silt, clay,Cr,Co,Ni,organic carbon, organic nitrogen, phenanthrene, and pyrene at site A were lower than those at site B and site C.These observations are consistent with the expected preferences of horseshoe crabs to live in areas with 60%sand content, which is associated with abundant and edible clamworms in the Crocodile Island intertidal zone,Xiamen.CAI Lizhe ZHAO Xiaoyu PENG Wenqing LIN Jingxiang YANG Deyuan RAO Yiyong FU Sujing CHEN Xinwei CAO Wenzhi 2022Journal of Ocean University of China2022,21,3:1
Two New Species of Free-Living Marine Nematodes of the Desmodoridae from Mangrove Wetlands of Xiamen Bay, China显示文摘Mangroves are unique in their biodiversity, but studies on their meiobenthic biodiversity in China are scarce.Despite the importance of mangroves, little work has been done on the classification of nematodes in mangrove wetlands.Fujian Province is the most northern point of China’s natural mangrove distribution, and it is also one of the provinces with the earliest constructed mangrove forest. In this paper, two new free-living marine nematode species of Desmodoridae from the Xiamen mangrove wetlands in China are described.Metachromadora xiamenensis sp.nov.is characterized by a cylindrical body, and smooth head capsule set off from the rest of the body. The cuticle is finely annulated and thickened at the midbody.Lateral ridges run from the posterior end of the pharynx to the middle of the tail. The amphid foveae is loop shaped and opens at the top with a double contour amphidial, pharynx with bipartite cuticularized internal cavity. There are 18 tubular precloacal supplements and tail with three small protuberances.Molgolaimus euryformis sp.nov.is characterized by a relatively short and plump body with finely annulated cuticle, which is particularly obvious in the tail. The head is small and wide with intensive striates. The inner and outer labial sensilla are indistinct with short spicules and ventral apophysis,a gubernaculum with a block-shaped hook,a swollen conical-cylindrical tail and an absence of precloacal supplements.ZHOU Xiping ZENG Jiali CAI Lizhe FU Sujing TAN Wenjuan 2020Journal of Ocean University of China2020,19,1:0
Geographical Variation in Oligochaete Density and Biomass in Subtropical Mangrove Wetlands of China显示文摘Oligochaetes play an important role in nutrient cycling and energy flow in benthic food webs as well as in mangrove wetlands. However, they have not been as extensively studied as other macrofaunal groups such as polychaetes, gastropods, bivalves, and crustaceans. Under the assumption that oligochaete density and biomass obey specific geographical distribution patterns in subtropical mangrove wetlands of China, we investigated these two parameters in the Luoyang Estuary of Quanzhou Bay, Zhangjiang Estuary and Gaoqiao mangrove wetlands. A geographical gradient in oligochaete density was present in Aegiceras corniculatum and Kandelia obovata habitats, whereby it decreased from lower latitudes to higher latitudes. Further, ANOVA tests on oligochaete distribution revealed that both oligochaete density and biomass were significantly influenced by region, season and region × season at the A. corniculatum and K. obovata habitats. The annual average oligochaete density and biomass at the A. corniculatum habitat were higher than that at the K. obovata habitat, in both the Luoyang and Zhangjiang estuaries. There were significant correlations between oligochaete density and biomass and sediment particle size parameters, confirming that sand, silt, and clay contents were the key environmental factors affecting oligochaete distribution.CHEN Xinwei CAI Lizhe ZHOU Xiping RAO Yiyong 2017Journal of Ocean University of China2017,16,5:0
