2Pro-oxidative and anti-oxidative imbalance in human semen and its relation with male fertility显示文摘Oxidative stress is a common condition suffered by biological systems in aerobic conditions.Human semen also has its own molecular guard against the free radicals created by normal respiratory process or from immune reactions.The equilibrium of the creation and scavenging of free radicals is mandatory in the spermatozoa to fertilize and initiate a full-term pregnancy.The paper is a systematic review of publications that evaluate oxidative stress in semen.The Cochrane Library,Medline (1966-2003),Embase (1988-2003),SciSearch (1981-2003) and the conference papers were searched,When sperm samples from fertile and infertile males were analyzed,some of the mechanisms that determine the oxidative stress level were found to be impaired while others were unaltered.In conclusion,the literature as a whole provides contradictory findings and it is necessary to carry out more work to identify all the enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems involved in oxidative stress in the ejaculate,in order to develop new diagnostic systems and therapeutic strategies for combating detrimental free radical imbalance in the semen.(Asian J Androl 2004 Mar;6:59-65)Nicolás Garrido Marcos Meseguer Carlos Simon Antonio Pellicer José Remohi 2004Asian Journal of Andrology2004,6,1:10
3Endoscopic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging for re-staging rectal cancer after radiotherapy显示文摘AIM:To compare the sensitivity and specificity of two imaging techniques,endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),in patients with rectal cancer after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy. And we compared EUS and MRI data with histological fi ndings from surgical specimens. METHODS:Thirty-nine consecutive patients (51.3% Male; mean age:68.2 ± 8.9 years) with histologically confirmed distal rectal cancer were examined for staging. All patients underwent EUS and MRI imaging before and after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy. RESULTS:After neoadjuvant chemoradiation,EUS and MRI correctly classified 46% (18/39) and 44% (17/39) of patients,respectively,in line with their histological T stage (P > 0.05). These proportions were higher for both techniques when nodal involvement was considered:69% (27/39) and 62% (24/39). When patients were sorted into T and N subgroups,the diagnostic accuracy of EUS was better than MRI for patients withT0-T2 (44% vs 33%,P > 0.05) and N0 disease (87% vs 52%,P = 0.013). However,MRI was more accurate than EUS in T and N staging for patients with more advanced disease after radiotherapy,though these differences did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION:EUS and MRI are accurate imaging techniques for staging rectal cancer. 6Activation of the pattern recognition receptor NOD1 augments colon cancer metastasis显示文摘While emerging data suggest nucleotide oligomerization domain receptor 1(NOD1),a cytoplasmic pattern recognition receptor,may play an important and complementary role in the immune response to bacterial infection,its role in cancer metastasis is entirely unknown.Hence,we sought to determine the effects of NOD1 on metastasis.NOD1 expression in paired human primary colon cancer,human and murine colon cancer cells were determined using immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting(WB).Clinical significance of NOD1 was assessed using TCGA survival data.A series of in vitro and in vivo functional assays,including adhesion,migration,and metastasis,was conducted to assess the effect of NOD1.C12-iE-DAP,a highly selective NOD1 ligand derived from gram-negative bacteria,was used to activate NOD1.ML130,a specific NOD1 inhibitor,was used to block C12-iE-DAP stimulation.Stable knockdown(KD)of NOD1 in human colon cancer cells(HT29)was constructed with shRNA lentiviral transduction and the functional assays were thus repeated.Lastly,the predominant signaling pathway of NOD1-activation was identified using WB and functional assays in the presence of specific kinase inhibitors.Our data demonstrate that NOD1 is highly expressed in human colorectal cancer(CRC)and human and murine CRC cell lines.Clinically,we demonstrate that this increased NOD1 expression negatively impacts survival in patients with CRC.Subsequently,we identify NOD1 activation by C12-iE-DAP augments CRC cell adhesion,migration and metastasis.These effects are predominantly mediated via the p38 mitogen activated protein kinase(MAPK)pathway.This is the first study implicating NOD1 in cancer metastasis,and thus identifying this receptor as a putative therapeutic target.Henry Y.Jiang Sara Najmeh Guy Martel Elyse MacFadden-Murphy Raquel Farias Paul Savage Arielle Leone Lucie Roussel Jonathan Cools-Lartigue Stephen Gowing Julie Berube Betty Giannias France Bourdeau Carlos HFChan Jonathan D.Spicer Rebecca McClure Morag Park Simon Rousseau Lorenzo E.Ferri 2020Protein & Cell2020,11,3:3

8Complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation in colorectal cancer in the era of minimally invasive surgery显示文摘Since the 19th century,appropriate lymphadenectomy has been considered a cornerstone of oncologic surgery and one of the most important prognostic factors.This approach can be applied to any surgery for gastrointestinal cancer.During surgery for colon and rectal cancer,an adequate portion of the mesentery is removed together with the segment of bowel affected by the disease.The adequate number of lymph nodes to be removed is standardized and reported by several guidelines.It is mandatory to determine the appropriate extent of lymphadenectomy and to balance its oncological benefits with the increased morbidity associated with its execution in cancer patients.Our review focuses on the concept of“complete mesenteric excision(CME)with central vascular ligation(CVL),”a radical lymphadenectomy for colorectal cancer that has gained increasing interest in recent years.The aim of this study was to evaluate the evolution of this approach over the years,its potential oncologic benefits and potential risks,and the improvements offered by laparoscopic techniques.Theoretical advantages of CME are improved local-relapse rates due to complete removal of the intact mesocolic fascia and improved distance recurrence rates due to ligation of vessels at their origin(CVL)which guarantees removal of a larger number of lymph nodes.The development and worldwide diffusion of laparoscopic techniques minimized postoperative trauma in oncologic surgery,providing the same oncologic results as open surgery.This has been widely applied to colorectal cancer surgery;however,CME entails a technical complexity that can limit its wide minimally-invasive application. 9Bimanual microincision cataract surgery with implantation of the new Incise~? MJ14 intraocular lens through a 1.4 mm incision显示文摘AIM: To analyze the visual outcomes and the posterior capsule opacification(PCO) with the new Incise? MJ14 intraocular lens(IOL) implanted through a 1.4 mm clear corneal incision(CCI) in patients who underwent bimanual microincision cataract surgery(B-MICS). METHODS: Eighty eyes which underwent cataract surgery using B-MICS technique performed by the same experienced surgeon were included in the study: 40 eyes were implanted with an Incise? MJ14 IOL through a 1.4 mm CCI(group A)without enlargement of the main CCI, while 40 eyes were implanted with an Akreos? MI60 IOL with enlargement of the main CCI to 1.8 mm(group B). Best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), astigmatism and endothelial cell loss were evaluated before and after surgery at 7, 30 d and 6 mo.Anterior segment-optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT) of CCI was performed at 1, 3, 7, 30 d, 6 and 18 mo. PCO incidence was evaluated at 18 mo using EPCO 2000 Software. RESULTS: Mean BCVA improvement and endothelial cell loss were statistically significant at 18 mo in both groups with no difference between the two groups; no statistically significant difference in surgically induced astigmatism(SIA) was noticed in the two groups. At AS-OCT the only significant alterations in the CCI were endothelial gaping and local detachment of Descemet's membrane at 1 and 7 d after surgery; no statistically significant alterations were found at 1, 6 and 18 mo. PCO score at 18 mo was 0.03±0.07 for group A and 0.08±0.18 for group B(P=0.11) with no sign of central optic plate invasion in both groups.CONCLUSION: The implant of the new Incise? MJ14 IOL through a 1.4 mm CCI and B-MICS technique appeared to be a safe and effective procedure with rapid visual recovery. 20Integrated silicon ohotonic MEMS显示文摘Silicon photonics has emerged as a mature technology that is expected to play a key role in critical emerging applications,including very high data rate optical communications,distance sensing for autonomous vehicles,photonic-accelerated computing,and quantum information processing.The success of silicon photonics has been enabled by the unique combination of performance,high yield,and high-volume capacity that can only be achieved by standardizing manufacturing technology.Today,standardized silicon photonics technology platforms implemented by foundries provide access to optimized library components,including low-loss optical routing,fast modulation,continuous tuning,high-speed germanium photodiodes,and high-effciency optical and electrical interfaces.However,silicon's relatively weak electro-optic effects result in modulators with a significant footprint and thermo-optic tuning devices that require high power consumption,which are substantial impediments for very large-scale integration in silicon photonics.Microelectromechanical systems(MEMS)technology can enhance silicon photonics with building blocks that are compact,low-loss,broadband,fast and require very low power consumption.Here,we introduce a silicon photonic MEMS platform consisting of high-performance nano-opto-electromechanical devices fully integrated alongside standard silicon photonics foundry components,with wafer-level sealing for long-term reliability,flip-chip bonding to redistribution interposers,and fibre-array attachment for high port count optical and electrical interfacing.Our experimental demonstration of fundamental silicon photonic MEMS circuit elements,including power couplers,phase shifters and wavelength-division multiplexing devices using standardized technology lifts previous impediments to enable scaling to very large photonic integrated circuits for applications in telecommunications,neuromorphic computing,sensing,programmable photonics,and quantum computing.Niels Quack Alain Yuji Takabayashi Hamed Sttari Pieirre Edinger Gaehun Jo Simon JBleker Carlos Errando-Herranz Kristinn BGylfason Frank Niklaus Umar Khan Peter Verheyen Arun Kumar Malik Jun Su Lee Moises Jezzini Padraic Morrissey Cleitus Antony Peter O'Brien Wim Bogaertso 2023Microsystems & Nanoengineering2023,9,2:1
