1Discrimination of False Negative Results in RT-PCR Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNAs in Clinical Specimens by Using an Internal Reference显示文摘Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)is an essential method for specific diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection.Unfortunately,false negative test results are often reported.In this study,we attempted to determine the principal causes leading to false negative results of RT-PCR detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNAs in respiratory tract specimens.Multiple sputum and throat swab specimens from 161 confirmed COVID-19 patients were tested with a commercialfluorescent RT-PCR kit targeting the ORF1 ab and N regions of SARS-CoV-2 genome.The RNA level of a cellular housekeeping gene ribonuclease P/MRP subunit p30(RPP30)in these specimens was also assessed by RT-PCR.Data for a total of 1052 samples were retrospectively re-analyzed and a strong association between positive results in SARS-CoV-2 RNA tests and high level of RPP30 RNA in respiratory tract specimens was revealed.By using the ROC-AUC analysis,we identified Ct cutoff values for RPP30 RT-PCR which predicted false negative results for SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR with high sensitivity(95.03%–95.26%)and specificity(83.72%–98.55%)for respective combination of specimen type and ampli-fication reaction.Using these Ct cutoff values,false negative results could be reliably identified.Therefore,the presence of cellular materials,likely infected host cells,are essential for correct SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection by RT-PCR in patient specimens.RPP30 could serve as an indicator for cellular content,or a surrogate indicator for specimen quality.In addition,our results demonstrated that false negativity accounted for a vast majority of contradicting results in SARS-CoV-2 RNA test by RT-PCR.Yafei Zhang Changtai Wang Mingfeng Han Jun Ye Yong Gao Zhongping Liu Tengfei He Tuantuan Li Mengyuan Xu Luping Zhou Guizhou Zou Mengji Lu Zhenhua Zhang 2020Virologica Sinica2020,35,6:5

5Effect of Varying Temperature and Oxygen on Particulate Matter Formation in Oxy-Biomass Combustion显示文摘Offsetting particulate matter emissions has become a critical global aim as there are concerted efforts to deal with environmental and energy poverty challenges.This study consists of investigations of computing emissions of particulate matter from biomass fuels in various atmospheres and temperatures.The laboratory setup included a fixed bed electric reactor and a particulate matter(PM)measuring machine interfaced with the flue gas from the fixed bed reactor combustion chamber.The experiments were conducted at seven different temperatures(600℃-1200℃)and six incremental oxygen concentrations(21%-100%).Five biomass types were studied;A-cornstalk,B-wood,C-wheat straw,D-Rice husk,E-Peanut shell,each pulverized to a size of approximately 75 microns.The study shows that PM emitted during char combustion is consistently higher than that emitted during the de-volatilization.During de-volatilization,increase in temperature leads to linear decrease in PM emission between atmospheres of 21%O_(2)to 50%O_(2),thereafter,between 70%O_(2)to 100%O_(2);increase in temperature leads to a rise in PM emission.The average PM formation from all the five considered biomass is relatively comparable however,with differing atmospheres and temperatures,the fibrous and low-density biomass forms more PM.During char combustion,the study shows that at oxygen levels of 21%,70%,90%and 100%,increase in temperature leads to increased PM emission.The increase in oxygen concentration and temperature increases the rate of combustion hence diminishing the time of combustion.Chen Wang Cicilia Kemunto Mesa Samuel Bimenyimana Nathan Bogonko George Adwek Yiyi Mo Godwin Norense Osarumwense Asemota Changfu Yuan Yaowen Chen Changtai Li Etienne Ntagwirumugara Aphrodis Nduwamungu 2022Energy Engineering2022,119,3:0
6Association between serum albumin levels and disease severity in adult patients with dengue: A 7-year retrospective cohort study in China's Mainland显示文摘Objective:To identify the association between serum albumin levels and disease severity among adult patients with dengue in China's Mainland.Methods:This retrospective cohort study analyzed the data of adult patients(aged≥18 years)hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed dengue in a tertiary center for infectious diseases from 2013 to 2019 in China's Mainland.Serum albumin levels were estimated and compared between patients with severe dengue and non-severe dengue.Additionally,the association between serum albumin levels and severe dengue was evaluated using a generalized linear model[relative risks(RR)].Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the potential predictors of severe dengue.Results:Overall,1568 patients were included in this study.Of these patients,34(2.17%)developed severe dengue.The median serum albumin levels were significantly lower in patients with severe dengue than that in those with non-severe dengue(33 g/L vs.37 g/L,P<0.001).After adjustment for age,sex,and comorbidities,hypoalbuminemia(RR 4.877,95%CI 2.193-11.461,P<0.001)was found to be a predictor of severe dengue.Serum albumin levels(OR 1.303,95%CI 1.161-1.462,P<0.001)and age(OR 1.038,95%CI 1.017-1.061,P<0.001)were significant risk factors for severe dengue.The area under the curve for serum albumin levels to distinguish severe dengue was 0.787.Conclusions:Lower serum albumin levels were significantly associated with disease severity in adult patients with dengue.Hypoalbuminemia on admission resulted in at least a four-fold increased risk of severe dengue.Changtai Wang Huiqin Yang Jielan Xu Jian Wang Lingzhai Zhao Wenxin Hong Fuchun Zhang 2023Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2023,16,5:0

8A novel fractal-statistical scaling model of rocks considering strain rate显示文摘The scaling-dependent behaviors of rocks are significant to the stability and safe operation of the structures built in or on rock masses for practical engineering.Currently,many size effect models are employed to connect laboratory measurements at small scales and engineering applications at large scales.However,limited works consider the strain rate effect.In this study,an fractal-statistical scaling model incorporating strain rate is proposed based on a weakest-link approach,fractal theory and dynamic fracture mechanics.The proposed scaling model consists of 8 model parameters with physical meaning,i.e.rate-dependent parameter,intrinsic material parameter,dynamic strain rate,quasi-static strain rate,quasi-static fracture toughness,micro-crack size,micro-crack intensity and fractal dimension,enabling the proposed scaling model to model the scaling behaviors under different external conditions.Theoretical predictions are consistent with experimental data on red sandstone,proving the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed scaling model.Thus,the scaling behaviors of rocks under dynamic loading conditions can be captured by the proposed fractal-statistical scaling model.The sensitivity analysis indicates that the nominal strength difference becomes more obvious with a higher strain rate,larger fractal dimension,smaller micro-crack size or lower micro-crack intensity.Therefore,the proposed scaling model has the potential to capture the scaling behaviors considering the thermal effect,weathering effect,anisotropic characteristic etc.,as the proposed scaling model incorporated model parameters with physical meaning.The findings of this study are of fundamental importance to understand the scaling behaviors of rock under dynamic loading condition,and thus would facilitate the appropriate design of rock engineering.Changtai Zhou Heping Xie Zhihe Wang Tao Zhou Jianbo Zhu 2023Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2023,15,11:0
