| 1 | Effects of resource additions on species richness and ANPP in an alpine meadow community显示文摘Aims Theories based on resource additions indicate that plant species richness is mainly determined by the number of limiting resources.However,the individual effects of various limiting resources on species richness and aboveground net primary productivity(ANPP)are less well understood.Here,we analyzed potential linkages between additions of limiting resources,species loss and ANPP increase and further explored the underlying mechanisms.Methods Resources(N,P,K and water)were added in a completely randomized block design to alpine meadow plots in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.Plant aboveground biomass,species composition,mean plant height and light availability were measured in each plot.Regression and analysis of variance were used to analyze the responses of these measures to the different resource-addition treatments.Important Findings Species richness decreased with increasing number of added limiting resources,suggesting that plant diversity was apparently determined by the number of limiting resources.Nitrogen was the most important limiting resource affecting species richness,whereas Pand K alone had negligible effects.The largest reduction in species richness occurred when all three elements were added in combination.Water played a different role compared with the other limiting resources.Species richness increased when water was added to the treatments with N and P or with N,P and K.The decreases in species richness after resource additions were paralleled by increases in ANPP and decreases in light penetration into the plant canopy,suggesting that increased light competitionwas responsible for the negative effects of resource additions on plant species richness. | Zhengwei Ren Qi Li Chengjin Chu Luqiang Zhao Jieqi Zhang Dexiecuo Ai Yingbo Yang Gang Wang | 2010 | Journal of Plant Ecology2010,3,1: | 40 |
| 2 | Effects of traits,species identity and local environmental conditions on the assessment of interactions:insights from an alpine meadow community显示文摘Aims The prediction that facilitation is the dominant interaction in physically stressful conditions has been supported by many but not all field studies.In the present paper,we tested the effects of the identity of species,the local environmental conditions and the currencies of performance measurement on such variation.Methods Using contrasting two plots,six species,and up to five multiple traits,we comprehensively explored the effects of the above factors on the assessment of plant interactions in an alpine meadow of the QingHai Tibetan Plateau.Additionally,we attempted to figure out the possible mechanisms underlying the responses observed.The data were analysed by both standard ANOVAs and multivariate statistics.Important findings Our results demonstrated that the response to the removal of neighbours was both species and trait specific,and the effect of the ocal environmental conditions was dependent on the species involved.The contrast between plots had crucial influence on the net interactions of Kobresia macrantha,but little effect on Elymus nutans.Regarding the abiotic conditions,neighbours had significant impact on soil temperature,moist and solar radiation.The results contribute to advance our knowledge on the potential underlying factors influencing the assessment of facilitation. | Chengjin Chu Youshi Wang Qi Li Luqiang Zhao Zhengwei Ren Sa Xiao Jianli Yuan Gang Wang | 2009 | Journal of Plant Ecology2009,2,3: | 6 |
| 3 | Positive interactions can produce species-rich communities and increase species turnover through time显示文摘Aims The process of facilitation,where a species increases the survival,growth,and fitness of another species,is becoming increasingly recognized as a critical factor in shaping the structure of plant communities.This process is particularly important in stressful environments.Yet few studies have attempted to incorporate positive interactions into community ecological theories such as the neutral theory of biodiversity.Here,we use an equalizing trade-off model as a foundation to study the potential impact of facilitation on species richness and community temporal turnover.Methods Based on a spatially explicit birth–death trade-off model,we assume that the occurrence of facilitation is dependent on the presence of interspecific neighbours.We further propose that the realized birth rate for a given individual subject to facilitation is proportional to the number of interspecific neighbours within its neighbourhood.Thus,in our model,the individuals of rare species will benefit more from the existence of heterospecific individuals than common species.Important Findings As the facilitative coefficient increased,the species richness for simulated communities at the dynamically stochastic equilibrium was also increasing.Simulations also demonstrated that facilitation could increase the replacement of species through time:communities with facilitation become more dissimilar(i.e.have smaller Bray–Curtis similarity values)than communities without or with a lower degree of facilitation after the same time interval.Facilitation from interspecific neighbours on rare species increased their population sizes and consequently made them less prone to extinction,thus enhancing species richness.Meanwhile,in a saturated community,with the increase of species richness,mean population size of entire communities decreased,making species more prone to extinction on average,and thus increased the community temporal turnover.Our results suggest that future experimental work on the effect of facilitation on community-level properties should focus not just on species richness but also on other descriptors of community dynamics such as the temporal species turnover. | Youshi Wang M.D.Farnon Ellwood Fernando TMaestre Zhiyong Yang Gang Wang Chengjin Chu | 2012 | Journal of Plant Ecology2012,5,4: | 3 |
| 4 | Beyond direct neighbourhood effects:higher-order interactions improve modelling and predicting tree survival and growth显示文摘It is known that biotic interactions are the key to species coexistence and maintenance of species diversity.Traditional studies focus overwhelmingly on pairwise interactions between organisms,ignoring complex higher-order interactions(HOIs).In this study,we present a novel method of calculating individual-level HOIs for trees,and use this method to test the importance of size-and distance-dependent individual-level HOIs to tree performance in a 25-ha temperate forest dynamic plot.We found that full HOI-inclusive models improved our ability to model and predict the survival and growth of trees,providing empirical evidence that HOIs strongly influence tree performance in this temperate forest.Specifically,assessed HOIs mitigate the competitive direct effects of neighbours on survival and growth of focal trees.Our study lays a foundation for future investigations of the prevalence and relative importance of HOIs in global forests and their impact on species diversity. | Yuanzhi Li Margaret M.Mayfield Bin Wang Junli Xiao Kamil Krai David Janik Jan Holik Chengjin Chu | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,5: | 2 |
| 5 | 植物物种多度受功能性状和负密度依赖共同影响--以中国南亚热带黑石顶森林样地为例显示文摘影响植物群落中植物物种多度的因素较多,确定关键影响因素及阐明其具体机制一直是群落生态学的研究重点之一。目前确定性的影响因素主要有两大类:植物功能性状和负密度依赖。功能性状通过影响植物的竞争能力、资源的获取效率、对环境的适应能力等方面进而影响植物的多度;负密度依赖表现在同种或异种植物个体在空间上聚集,特异性的寄主(病原菌、昆虫等)传播容易导致植物个体(主要为幼苗和小树)死亡,种群发生自疏,进而影响植物的多度。到目前为止,单一探究植物功能性状或负密度依赖对植物多度影响机制的研究己有大量报道,而将两者结合来探讨对植物多度的影响的工作相对较少。为了更深入地探索影响植物多度的机制,本研究中我们综合分析了功能性状与负密度依赖对植物多度的影响。研究地点为广东省黑石顶亚热带森林50 ha大样地;功能性状方面选取了叶面积(LA)、比叶面积(SLA)、叶片干物质含量(LDMC)、叶片氮含量(LNC)和最大电子传输速率(ETRmax);植物物种所受负密度依赖强度通过构建小树在样地两次普查期间的存活状况受邻体密度影响的层次贝叶斯模型计算;通过结构方程模型构建功能性状-负密度依赖-物种多度的内在联系框架。结构方程模型结果显示,物种多度受功能性状和负密度依赖共同作用,其中功能性状对物种多度的影响包括直接作用和通过负密度依赖的间接作用。具体来说,SLA对多度的影响包括直接和间接两种;LDMC和LNC仅间接影响物种多度;LA和ETRmax对多度只有直接影响:负密度依赖与物种多度之间存在直接的负相关关系,说明多度较高的物种受到的负密度依赖效应更强。结构方程模型对物种多度差异的解释度达到20%。以上结果表明,黑石顶植物多度分布是功能性状与负密度依赖共同作用的结果;比叶面积在所研究的因素中贡献最大。该项工作有助于提高我们对亚热带森林植物常见种和稀有种分布格局的理解。 | Weitao Wang Yun Jiang Buhang Li Nianxun Xi Yongfa Chen Dong He Jiayi Feng Chengjin Chu | 2021 | Journal of Plant Ecology2021,14,3: | 2 |
| 6 | The effects of fertilization on the trait-abundance relationships in a Tibetan alpine meadow community显示文摘Aims Comparisons of the trait-abundance relationships from various habitat types are critical for community ecology,which can offer us insights about the mechanisms underlying the local community assembly,such as the relative role of neutral vs.niche processes in shaping community structure.Here,we explored the responses of trait-abundance relationships to nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P)and potassium(K)fertilization in an alpine meadow.Methods Five fertilization treatments(an unfertilized control and additions of N,P,K and NPK respectively)were implemented using randomized block design in an alpine Tibetan meadow.Species relative abundance(SRA),plant above-ground biomass and species richness were measured in each plot.For 24 common species,we measured species functional traits:saturated height,specific leaf area(SLA)and leaf dry matter content(LDMC)in each treatment but seed size only in the unfertilized control.Standard major axis(SMA)regression and phylogenetically independent contrasts(PICs)analysis were used to analyse species trait-abundance relationships in response to different fertilization treatments.Important Findings Positive correlations between SRA and saturated height were raised following N,P and NPK fertilizations,which indicated an increase in light competition in these plots.In P fertilized plots,SRA was also positively correlated with LDMC because tall grasses with a nutrients conservation strategy often have a relative competitive advantage in capturing limited light and soil nutrients.In K fertilized plots,neither the trait-abundance relationships nor above-ground biomass or species richness significantly differed from that in the control,which suggests that K was not a limiting resource in our study site.These significant correlations between species traits and relative abundance in fertilized treatment suggest that trait-based selection plays an important role in determining species abundance within local communities in alpine meadows. | Xiaolong Zhou Youshi Wang Pengfei Zhang Zhi Guo Chengjin Chu Guozhen Du | 2016 | Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,2: | 1 |

| 9 | 从功能性状的种内变异和环境因子的角度理解局域森林群落嵌套格局的成因显示文摘生态学中“嵌套”的概念源于生物地理学,指的是物种较少的斑块为物种较多斑块的嵌套子集,在集合群落和生物互作网络中得到了广泛应用,嵌套格局的存在往往被认为有利于物种多样性的维持和保证了网络结构的稳定性。目前,针对局域植物群落嵌套格局的研究较少,相关研究也很少将功能性状和环境因子同时纳入考虑以探讨格局成因。本研究依托位于中国南部的黑石顶50公顷森林大样地,将样地植物普查数据和位置信息转换为物种-样方矩阵,对该矩阵重排寻找到矩阵的最大嵌套结构。针对最大嵌套结构,使用零模型方法验证嵌套结构的显著性;根据物种和样方在最大嵌套结构内的排序,划定物种和样方的嵌套等级。随后,使用回归树方法分别确定物种和样方嵌套等级与功能性状和环境因子的联系,物种功能性状数据包括性状均值与性状种内变异。研究结果表明,黑石顶植物群落存在显著的嵌套格局,回归树结果发现,样方嵌套等级与土壤速效磷、土壤水分含量、土壤有机质含量和土壤pH相关,以上因子共解释了32%的样方嵌套等级变异;物种嵌套等级主要受物种功能性状的种内变异而非性状均值影响,其中叶片碳含量、叶片pH、叶片干物质含量和最大光合速率的种内变异是主导因素,它们共解释了物种嵌套等级变异的49%。以上结果说明,关键性的环境因子与物种对环境的适应能力共同作用,使局域植物群落形成了嵌套格局。本研究从样方嵌套等级和物种嵌套等级的角度探讨嵌套格局成因,为理解嵌套格局提供了新的角度,加深了研究者对于局域植物群落构建机制的理解。 | Weitao Wang Yun Jiang Yongfa Chen Wenqi Luo Dong He Youshi Wang Chengjin Chu Buhang Li | 2022 | Journal of Plant Ecology2022,15,6: | 0 |
| 10 | Sexual competition and kin recognition co-shape the traits of neighboring dioecious Diospyros morrisiana seedlings显示文摘Plants respond differently to the identity of their neighbors,such as their sex and kinship,showing plasticity in their traits.However,how the functional traits of dioecious trees are shaped by the recognition of neighbors with different sex and kinship remains unknown.In this study,we set up an experiment with different kin/nonkin and inter/intrasexual combinations for a dioecious tree species,Diospyros morrisiana.The results showed that plants grew better with nonkin and intrasexual neighbors than with kin and intersexual neighbors.Kin combinations had significantly shorter root length in the resource-overlapping zone than nonkin combinations,suggesting that kin tended to reduce competition by adjusting their root distribution,especially among female siblings.Our study suggested that the seedling growth of D.morrisiana was affected by both the relatedness and sexual identity of neighboring plants.Further analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that the root exudate composition of female seedlings differed from that of male seedlings.Root exudates may play important roles in sex competition in dioecious plants.This study indicates that sex-specific competition and kin recognition interact and co-shape the traits of D.morrisiana seedlings,while intrasexual and nonkin neighbors facilitate the growth of seedlings.Our study implies that kin-and sex-related interactions depend on different mechanisms,kin selection,and niche partitioning,respectively.These results are critical for understanding how species coexist and how traits are shaped in nature. | Yulin He Han Xu Hanlun Liu Meiling Luo Chengjin Chu Suqin Fang | 2021 | Horticulture Research2021,8,1: | 0 |
