Effects of gaps on regeneration of woody plants: a meta-analysis显示文摘Forest gaps, openings in the canopy caused by death of one or more trees, have a profound effect on forest regeneration and drive the forest growth cycle. It is therefore necessary to understand the effects of forest gaps on regeneration for modern forest management. In order to provide a quantitative assessment of the effects of forest gaps on regeneration of woody plants, we conducted this review of gap effects on woody plant regeneration on the basis of 527 observations from 42 individual papers, and reported the results of these data in a meta-analysis. Overall, densities of regenerated woody plants were significantly greater(359%) in forest gaps than on the closed-canopy forest floor. The regeneration density in gaps of plantation forests was significantly greater(P < 0.05) than that of natural forest because the regeneration in gaps of plantation forests was improved by both gap effects and experimental measures. Similarly, in comparison to natural gaps, regeneration was better enhanced in artificial gaps. Regeneration density exhibited a significantly positive correlation with gap size, but a negative correlation with gap age because the gap size decreased with increasing gap age. Shade tolerance of woody plants affected regeneration density in gaps and understory. Average regeneration density of shade-tolerant species exhibited a significantly positive response to gaps but densities remained lower in total than those of intermediate and shade-intolerant species. Gap effects on regeneration decreased in response to increasing temperature and precipitation because of the limiting effects of lower temperature and moisture on woody plant regeneration. In summary, forest gaps enhance woody plant regeneration, and the effects of gaps varied by forest type, gap characteristics, environmental factors and plant traits. The results of this meta-analysis are useful for better understanding the effects and roles of gaps on forest regeneration and forest management. | Jiaojun Zhu Deliang Lu Weidong Zhang | 2014 | Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,3: | 15
Rapid growth cost in “all-fish” growth hormone gene transgenic carp:Reduced critical swimming speed显示文摘Evidence has accumulated that there is a trade-off between benefits and costs associated with rapid growth. A trade-off between growth rates and critical swimming speed (Ucrit) had been also reported to be common in teleost fish. We hypothesize that growth acceleration in the F3 generation of 'all-fish' growth hormone gene (GH) transgenic common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) would reduce the swimming abilities. Growth and swimming performance between transgenic fish and non-transgenic controls were compared. The results showed that transgenic fish had a mean body weight 1.4―1.9-fold heavier, and a mean specific growth rate (SGR) value 6%―10% higher than the controls. Transgenic fish, however, had a mean absolute Ucrit (cm/s) value 22% or mean relative Ucrit (BL/s) value 24% lower than the controls. It suggested that fast-growing 'all-fish' GH-transgenic carp were inferior swimmers. It is also supported that there was a trade-off between growth rates and swimming performance,i.e. faster-growing individuals had lower critical swimming speed. | LI DeLiang FU CuiZhang HU Wei ZHONG Shan WANG YaPing ZHU ZuoYan | 2007 | Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,11: | 14
Strong link between large tropical volcanic eruptions and severe droughts prior to monsoon in the central Himalayas revealed by tree-ring records显示文摘Large tropical volcanic eruptions can cause short-term global cooling. However, little is known whether large tropical volcanic eruptions, like the one in Tambora/Indonesia in 1815, cause regional hydroclimatic anomalies. Using a tree-ring network of precisely dated Himalayan birch in the central Himalayas, we reconstructed variations in the regional pre-monsoon precipitation back to 1650 CE. A superposed epoch analysis indicates that the pre-monsoon regional droughts are associated with large tropical volcanic eruptions, appearing to have a strong influence on hydroclimatic conditions in the central Himalayas. In fact, the most severe drought since 1650 CE occurred after the Tambora eruption. These results suggest that dry conditions prior to monsoon in the central Himalayas were associated with explosive tropical volcanism. Prolonged La Ni?a events also correspond with persistent pre-monsoon droughts in the central Himalayas. Our results provide evidence that large tropical volcanic eruptions most likely induced severe droughts prior to monsoon in the central Himalayas. | Eryuan Liang Binod Dawadi Neil Pederson Shilong Piao Haifeng Zhu Shalik Ram Sigdel Deliang Chen | 2019 | Science Bulletin2019,64,14: | 8
Titanium carbonitride thick coating prepared by plasma spray synthesis and its tribological properties显示文摘TiCN coating, owing to its superior wear-resistance, has been frequently applied in many fields. TiCN thick coating was first prepared by reactive plasma spraying. The phase composition, microstructure and tribological properties of the TiCN coating were investigated in this research. Experimental results show that the microstructure of the TiCN coating was quite dense, and there was also a little amount of titanium oxides within the coating. By XPS analysis, Ti-C and Ti-N bonds were detected in the coating. The TiCN coating exhibited superior wear-resistance. The failure mechanism was attributed to the ad-hesive wear, the grinding of TiCN hard-grain, as well as the coating failure by oxidation. There were more Fe, Cr, O, etc. in the failure zone, suggesting that the corrosion propagated gradually from sur-face to interior. | ZHU Lin HE JiNing YAN DianRan XIAO LiSong DONG YanChun XUE DingChuan MENG DeLiang | 2007 | Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,13: | 6
Acute and chronic un-ionized ammonia toxicity to ‘all-fish’ growth hormone transgenic common carp(Cyprinus carpio L.)显示文摘Ammonia is toxic to fish in natural and artificial waters. We evaluated the acute(96 h) and chronic(21 d) toxicity of un-ionized ammonia to GH transgenic common carp(Cyprinus carpio L.) and non-transgenic common carp using a static-renewal bioassay. The 24,48,72 and 96 h median lethal concentrations(LC50) of un-ionized ammonia were slightly lower in transgenic carp(2.64,2.44,2.28 and 2.16 mg N/L,respectively) than in non-transgenic carp(2.70,2.64,2.52 and 2.33 mg N/L,respectively).Similarly,the median lethal time(LT50) was significantly shorter for transgenic carp(1.41,7.91 and 117.42 h) than for non-transgenic common carp(2.53,14.06 and 150.44 h) following exposure to 3.86,3.29,or 2.09 mg N/L,respectively.Moreover,the mortality of transgenic carp was significantly higher than that of non-transgenic carp at all un-ionized ammonia concentrations((0.91 ± 0.12),(0.48 ± 0.06) and(0.12 ± 0.01) mg N/L) during the 21 d chronic toxicity test. Our results suggest that GH transgenic carp are less tolerant of unionized ammonia than non-transgenic carp. Our data are useful for evaluating potential environmental risk, optimizing stocking density in intensive aquaculture and establishing water quality criteria for ammonia in aquaculture. | GUAN Bo HU Wei ZHANG TangLin DUAN Ming LI DeLiang WANG YaPing ZHU ZuoYan | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,35: | 4
Nematode-Encoded RALF Peptide Mimics Facilitate Parasitism of Plants through the FERONIA Receptor Kinase显示文摘The molecular mechanism by which plants defend against plant root-knot nematodes(RKNs)is largely unknown. The plant receptor kinase FERONIA and its peptide ligands, rapid alkalinization factors(RALFs),regulate plant immune responses and cell expansion, which are two important factors for successful RKN parasitism. In this study,we found that mutation of FERONIA in Arabidopsis thaliana resulted in plants showing low susceptibility to the RKN Meloidogyne incognita. To identify the underlying mechanisms associated with this phenomenon,we identified 18 novel RALF-likes from multiple species of RKNs and showed that two RALF-likes(i.e.,MiRALF1 and MiRALF3)from M.incognita were expressed in the esophageal gland with high expression during the parasitic stages of nematode development. These nematode RALF-likes also possess the typical activities of plant RALFs and can directly bind to the extracellular domain of FERONIA to modulate specific steps of nematode parasitism-related immune responses and cell expansion.Genetically, both MiRALF1/3 and FERONIA are required for RKN parasitism in Arabidopsis and rice.Collectively, our study suggests that nematode-encoded RALFs facilitate parasitism via plant-encoded FERONIA and provides a novel paradigm for studying host-pathogen interactions. | Xin Zhang Huan Peng Sirui Zhu Junjie Xing Xin Li Zhaozhong Zhu Jingyuan Zheng Long Wang Bingqian Wang Jia Chen Zhenhua Ming Ke Yao Jinzhuo Jian Sheng Luan Devin Coleman-Derr Hongdong Liao Yousong Peng Deliang Peng Feng Yu | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,10: | 3

Light-triggered NO-releasing nanoparticles for treating mice with liver fibrosis显示文摘Liver fibrosis, resulting from chronic liver damage and characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, is a characteristic of most types of chronic liver diseases. The activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC) is considered an essential pathological hallmark in liver fibrosis. Although nitric oxide (NO) can effectively induce HSC apoptosis, the systemic administration of NO is ineffective and may cause severe complications such as hypotension. To overcome this limitation, nanoparticles were designed to target HSCs and release NO locally under the exposure of near infrared light (NIR). To achieve this, upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) cores were enveloped in mesoporous silica shells (UCNP@mSiO2), which were modified with hyaluronic acid (HA-UCNP@mSiO2) and Roussin’s black salt (RBS). HA molecules recognize and bind to CD44 proteins, which are overexpressed on activated HSCs. Under exposure to a 980-nm NIR laser, the UCNP cores convert the 980-nm wavelength into ultraviolet (UV) light, which then energizes the RBS (NO donors), resulting in an efficient release of NO inside of the HSCs. Once released, NO triggers HSC apoptosis and reverses the liver fibrosis. This targeted and controlled release method provides the theoretical and experimental basis for novel therapeutic approaches to treat hepatic fibrosis. | Hongxia Liang Zhenhua Li Zhigang Ren Qiaodi Jia Linna Guo Shasha Li Hongyu Zhang Shiqi Hu Dashuai Zhu Deliang Shen Zujiang Yu Ke Cheng | 2020 | Nano Research2020,13,8: | 1

Significant histological changes are not rare in indeterminate‐phase chronic hepatitis B patients with hepatitis B e antigen‐negative and normal alanine aminotransferase levels显示文摘Background&Objectives:The degree of liver injury in indeterminate chronic hepatitis B(CHB)infection patients with Hepatitis B e antigen(HBeAg)‐negative and persistently normal alanine aminotransferase(PNALT)levels is yet unclear. Therefore,we aimed to assess liver histological changes in such patients by liver biopsy and explore possible predictors.Methods:Overall,711 HBeAg‐negative CHB patients with PNALT levels who underwent liver biopsy from January 2017 to June 2022 were included in this retrospective study. The relationships between histological changes and predictors were assessed by smooth curve fitting and multivariate logistic regression analysis models.Data were also analyzed using American Association for the Study of Liver Disease(AASLD)modified alanine aminotransferase(ALT)criteria. Results:The proportion of significant histological changes in the indeterminate phase was higher than that in the inactive phase(53.97%vs.41.33%).The adjusted odds ratios(aORs)of significant necroinflammation and histological changes for the indeterminate phase were 2.05 and 1.43,respectively,when compared with the inactive phase by multivariate logistic regression analyses.Significant histological changes in the‐phase were positively associated with age,ALT,Aspartate aminotransferase(AST),Hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg),and Hepatitis B virus(HBV)DNA levels but negatively correlated with platelet(PLT)levels.HBV DNA≥5 log10 U/L and PLT<200109/L were independent predictive factors for assessing histological changes in indeterminate‐phase patients.Similar analysis findings were obtained using the two sets of modified ALT criteria. Conclusions:Significant histological changes are not rare in indeterminatephase CHB patients and are higher than in the inactive phase, regardless of the ALT criteria.Histological investigation is strongly suggested for intermediate stage patients with HBV DNA>5 log10 U/L or PLT<200109/L and antiviral therapy should be considered for such patients. | Deliang Huang Guangde Zhou Jinghan Peng Qinxian Cai Guojun Li Hong Yu Zhibing Zhu Yuanyuan Chen Huiyi Lai Jinyan Jiang Hong Yu Jun Chen | 2023 | iLABMED2023,1,3: | 0
Exposures to temperature beyond threshold disproportionately reduce vegetation growth in the northern hemisphere显示文摘In recent decades, terrestrial vegetation in the northern hemisphere(NH)has been exposed to warming and more extremely high temperatures. However, the consequences of these changes for terrestrial vegetation growth remain poorly quantifed and understood.By examining a satellite-based vegetation index,tree-ring measurements and land-surface model simulations,we discovered a consistent convex patern in the responses of vegetation growth to temperature exposure(TE)for forest, shrub and grass in both the temperate(30°-50°N)and boreal(50°-70°N)NH during the period of 1982-2012.Te response of vegetation growth to TE for the three vegetation types in both the temperate and boreal NH increased convergently with increasing temperature, until vegetation type-dependent temperature thresholds were reached.A TE beyond these temperature thresholds resulted in disproportionately weak positive or even strong negative responses.Vegetation growth in the boreal NH was more vulnerable to extremely high-temperature events than vegetation growth in the temporal NH.Te non-linear responses discovered here provide new insights into the dynamics of northern terrestrial ecosystems in a warmer world. | Xiuchen Wu Weichao Guo Hongyan Liu Xiaoyan Li Changhui Peng Craig D.Allen Cicheng Zhang Pei Wang Tingting Pei Yujun Ma Yuhong Tian Zhaoliang Song Wenquan Zhu Yang Wang Zongshan Li Deliang Chen | 2019 | National Science Review2019,6,4: | 0
Storage and transfer of optical excitation energy in GaInP epilayer:Photoluminescence signatures显示文摘GaInP alloy could be the most trusted key material for fabricating super-high-efficiency single-and multijunction solar cells, especially for space applications. The storage and transfer of optical excitation energy in this key alloy is thus a key subject of the energy conversion from optical to electrical. In this article we present a study of the subject through investigating photoluminescence(PL) degradation in the GaInP epilayer at 4 K under the continuous optical excitations of ultraviolet(UV) 325 nm, visible 488.0 and 514.5 nm lasers. It is found that the decline of PL intensity with the irradiation time may be represented by I(t)/I0=(1 + tτ-1)-1+C, where I0 is the luminescence intensity at the beginning of irradiation, a time constant, and C a background. Moreover, the PL degradation degree reduces with increasing the excitation wavelength. In addition, some red shift of the PL peak is observed accompanying with the intensity decline under the UV laser excitation. These PL signatures indicate that the localized carriers within the local atomic ordering domains play a major role in the storage and transfer of the excitation energy via photon recycling processes. | Shijie Xu Ying Huang Zhicheng Su Rongxin Wang Jianrong Dong Deliang Zhu | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,7: | 0
3-5 An Experiment Setup for Synergetic Effect of Irradiation and LBE in IMP显示文摘Due to its unique properties, such as favorable neutronic characteristic, low melting point(~125 ?C) and highboiling point (> 1 600 ?C), good natural circulation and chemical inertness with water and air (unlike sodium), etc, lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been considered as perspective coolant and spallation target for accelerator drivensystems (ADS)[1;2]. The spallation structural materials of ADS will be long-term irradiated with fast neutrons whilesimultaneous being contact with LBE coolant. In the past few decades, irradiation or LBE corrosion behaviors invarious of materials have been massively investigated for the purpose of developing ADS. However, there are onlya few experiment data on the combined effect of irradiation and LBE corrosion on structural materials due to lackof related experimental setups[3;4]. Such tests are not only essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of ADS,but also necessary for building a database for licensing any materials for use in LBE cooled nuclear systems. | Yao Cunfeng Wang Zhiguang Zhang Hongpeng Sheng Yanbin Chang Hailong Sun Jianrong Wei Kongfang Li Bingsheng Shen Tielong Pang Lilong Zhu Yabin Wang Dong Du Yangyang Wang Ji Cui Minhuan Zhu Huiping Liu Chao Yang Yongwei Fan Deliang | 2014 | IMP & HIRFL Annual Report2014,,1: | 0

A General Strategy for Ordered Carrier Transport of Quasi‑2D and 3D Perovskite Films for Giant Self‑Powered Photoresponse and Ultrahigh Stability显示文摘Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have been focusing more attention in the field of self-powered photodetectors due to their superb photoelectric properties. However,a universal growth approach is required and challenging to realize vertically oriented growth and grain boundary fusion of 2D and 3D perovskite grains to promote ordered carrier transport, which determines superior photoresponse and high stability.Herein,a general thermal-pressed(TP)strategy is designed to solve the above issues, achieving uniaxial orientation and single-grain penetration along the film thickness direction. It constructs the efficient channel for ordered carrier transport between two electrodes.Combining of the improved crystal quality and lower trap-state density, the quasi-2D and 3D perovskite-based self-powered photodetector devices(with/without hole transport layer)all exhibit giant and stable photoresponse in a wide spectrum range and specific wavelength laser. For the MAPbI_(3)-based self-powered photodetectors, the largest R_(λ) value is as high as 0.57 A W^(−1)at 760 nm,which is larger than most reported results.Meanwhile, under laser illumination(532 nm),the FPEA_(2)MA_(4)Pb_(5)I_(16)-based device exhibits a high responsivity(0.4 A W^(−1)) value, which is one of the best results in 2DRP self-powered photodetectors. In addition, fast response, ultralow detection limit, and markedly improved humidity, optical and heat stabilities are clearly demonstrated for these TP-based devices. | Fei Zhu Gang Lian Deliang Cui Qilong Wang Haohai Yu Huaijin Zhang Qingbo Meng Ching‑Ping Wong | 2023 | Nano-Micro Letters2023,15,8: | 0
PLSCR1 promotes apoptosis and clearance of retinal ganglion cells in glaucoma pathogenesis显示文摘Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. In the pathogen-esis of glaucoma, activated microglia can lead to retinal ganglion cells(RGCs)apoptosis and death, however, the molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. We demonstrate that phospholipid scramblase 1(PLSCR1)is a key regulator promoting RGCs apoptosis and their clearance by microglia. As evidenced in retinal progenitor cells and RGCs of the acute ocular hypertension(AOH)mouse model, overexpressed PLSCR1 induced its translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and cytomembrane,as well as elevated phosphatidylserine exposure and reactive oxygen species generation with subsequent RGCs apoptosis and death. These damages were effectively attenuated by PLSCR1 inhibition. In the AOH model,PLSCR1 led to an increase in M1 type microglia activation and retinal neuroinflammation.Upregulation of PLSCR1 resulted in strongly elevated phagocytosis of apoptotic RGCs by activated microglia.Taken together, our study provides important insights linking activated microglia to RGCs death in the glaucoma pathogenesis and other RGC-related neurodegenerative diseases. | Jingyi Luo Qing Lian Deliang Zhu Minglei Zhao Tingfang Mei Bizhi Shang Zeqiu Yang Chujun Liu Wenchang Xu Lan Zhou Keling Wu Xinqi Liu Yuhua Lai Fuxiang Mao Weihua Li Chengguo Zuo Kang Zhang Mingkai Lin Yehong Zhuo Yizhi Liu Lin Lu Ling Zhao | 2023 | Genes & Diseases2023,10,4: | 0
