1Automated Image Analysis of Mud and Mudrock Microstructure and Characteristics of Hemipelagic Sediments: IODP Expedition 339显示文摘The microstructural analysis of muds and mudrocks requires very high-resolution measurement. Recent advances in electron microscopy have contributed significantly to the improved characterisation of mudrock microstructures and their consequent petrophysical properties. However, imaging through electron microscopy is limited to small areas of coverage such that upscaling of these properties is a great challenge. In this paper, we develop a new methodology for multiple large-area imaging using scanning electron microscopy through automated acquisition and stitching from polished thin-sections and ion-milled samples. The process is fast, efficient and minimises user-input and bias. It can provide reliable, quantifiable data on sediment grain size, grain orientation, pore size and porosity. Limitations include the time involved for individual runs and manual segmentation, the large amount of computer memory required, and instrument resolution at the nano-scale. This method is applied to selected samples of Quaternary muddy sediments from the Iberian margin at IODP Site 1385. The section comprises finegrained(very fine clayey silts), mixed-composition, biogenic-terrigenous hemipelagites, with a pronounced but non-regular colour cyclicity. There is a multi-tiered and diverse trace fossil assemblage of the deep-water Zoophycos ichnofacies. The sediment microstructures show small-scale heterogeneity in all properties, and an overall random fabric with secondary preferred grain-alignment. These results on the fabric differ, in part, from previous studies of hemipelagic muds. 7Tracing the Methane Events by Stable Carbon Isotopes of Benthic Foraminifera at Glacial Periods in the Andaman Sea显示文摘Stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen variations in foraminiferal shells have been widely used in paleo-environment studies.However,studies about the shells of benthic foraminifera in methanehydrate-bearing sediments as reliable geochemical proxies to reconstruct the potential methane release events in the geologic past are rare.In this study,we present the stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of fossil benthic foraminifera including one epifaunal species(Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi)and two infaunal species(Bulimina mexicana and Uvigerina peregrina)from the Site U1447 of IODP 353 Expedition to trace methane events in the Andaman Sea,where one of the thickest and deepest gas hydrate stability zones was discovered.Theδ^(13)C values of benthic foraminifera show that there are eight distinct intervals with negative values in the last~10 Myr,interpreted as a record of long-term fluctuations in methane emission.Six of these methane events occurred during the glacial sea-level lowstands in the last~1.1 Myr.We,therefore,infer that the trigger mechanism for these events might be the hydrate destabilization caused by sea level fall.The methane events that occurred at~2.11 and~5.93 Ma are more likely related to the sudden changes in sedimentation,either slide events or marked variations in sedimentation rate.Yue Cen Jiasheng Wang Xuan Ding Dorrik Stow Zhou Wang Can Chen Xiaochen Ma 2022Journal of Earth Science2022,33,6:1

13The Pliocene-Recent Euphrates river system:Sediment facies and architecture as an analogue for subsurface reservoirs显示文摘The Tigris-Euphrates is a continental-scale fluvial system,around 2800 km in length,which drains over 1 million km2 of SWAsia.The system originated in the Late Miocene and developed into the principal axial drainage system of the region,which follows broad regional structural features of the Mesopotamian Foreland Basin.Good preservation and outcropping of the Pliocene and Quaternary Euphrates deposits yield a viable local analogue for subsurface fluvial reservoirs in the region,and for other fluvial systems that have developed in foreland basin settings.This paper documents the first detailed study of the sedimentary characteristics of these Pliocene and Quaternary fluvial deposits along the middle reaches of the present-day Euphrates in Syria.The Euphrates fluvial system developed from small and probably short-lived isolated cut-and-fill channels in the Pliocene,characterised by abundant debrite and slump facies,through to a broad meandering system at present.The Quaternary deposits represent a braided to meandering system that was more energetic than that of the modern day Euphrates.The Quaternary facies include a dominance of gravels,pebbly sands and sands as channel associations,coupled with sands,muds and paleosols representing channel abandonment,overbank and crevasse-splay associations.Channel widths,where observed,range from 50 to 500 m,and minimum fill thicknesses range from 3 to 7 m.The combined channel-fill for stacked channels is up to 25 m thick.Lateral correlation of channel elements over at least 1 km of section indicates that rapid and extensive lateral migration has occurred.Crevasse splay lobes can be identified in the overbank deposits,with a width of 30e60 m and sand thickness of 0.5e1.5 m.The geometry,nature and dimensions of these architectural elements provide a useful analogue for subsurface reservoirs.The high-energy channel facies of the Quaternary system show very good reservoir attributes,with good correlation and connectivity.At the bed-scale there is significant heterogeneity of characteristics that would impact fluid-flow for hydrocarbon production from a subsurface reservoir.However,incomplete preservation of these Quaternary fluvial deposits at outcrop remains a challenge for accurately determining the scale of sedimentary features and also the size of the paleo-river.Dorrik Stow Uisdean Nicholson Samantha Kearsey Dominic Tatum Andy Gardiner Amer Ghabra Mahmoud Jaweesh 2020Energy Geoscience2020,1,3:0
14Bowland Shale well placement strategy-Part 2:Fracture simulations using a 3D geomechanical model and implications for stratigraphic and spatial horizontal well locations显示文摘Hydraulic fracture modelling is a key component of a shale reservoir well placement strategy as it provides an indication of the typical lengths and heights of stimulated fractures and of the changes to the stress environment in which these are propagating.However,spatial and stratigraphic variations in the stress and geomechanical properties of shales make accurate modelling a challenging task.For the UK Bowland Shale,stacked horizontal wells targeting multiple stratigraphic intervals could be used to avoid large offset faults in a geologically complex area.However,it is not known how these intervals may respond to hydraulic fracturing and predicting the height and length of hydraulic fractures is necessary in order to assess the likelihood of vertical fracture interference across landing zones or propagation towards major faults.In the case of the former,intervals of high effective stress may be key to containing fractures within their desired target.Using a planar hydraulic fracture simulator,and a 3D geomechanical model incorporating dipping stratigraphy,the issue of predicting hydraulic fracture geometry in the Bowland Shale was assessed through a series of modelling exercises using well Preese Hall-1 and horizontal pseudo-wells.When pre-defined landing zones were targeted,narrow and long transverse fractures around 1 km from the well were simulated.When the simulation design mimicked perforation clusters placed at 12 m intervals along horizontal pseudo-wells,the effects of stress shadowing were acute and resulted in irregular fracture geometries.Furthermore,high effective stress intervals performed efficiently as barriers to vertical hydraulic fracture propagation,reinforcing the feasibility of using stacked production for the Bowland Shale.The modelling results were then used to discuss the possible placement of horizontal wells in a mapped,100 km2 region around well Preese Hall-1,where up to 13 sites could be positioned,with a horizontal well length of around 1.5 km.Finally,by drawing on a wellestablished analogue for the Bowland Shale,it was estimated that up to 195 Bcf of gas could be produced from the 13 locations in the area if three stratigraphic intervals are produced from one location.Iain de Jonge-Anderson Jingsheng Ma Xiaoyang Wu Dorrik Stow David Griffiths 2022Energy Geoscience2022,3,3:0
15The role of the Mid-Cimmerian Unconformity on the quality of the underlying Skagerrak sandstone reservoir in the Kittiwake Field,central North Sea显示文摘The central aim of this paper is to address the role of unconformities in affecting reservoir quality.Do they facilitate diagenesis that leads to either enhanced or reduced porosity through dissolution or cementation?Or,do they have little effect?We have investigated the Late Triassic Skagerrak sandstone reservoir underlying the Mid-Cimmerian Unconformity in the Kittiwake Field,central North Sea.There is strong evidence for the development of secondary porosity through the dissolution of unstable silicate minerals,primarily feldspars.This includes the presence of oversized pores,partial dissolution of framework grains,and complete dissolution of grains leaving remnant grain margins and partially filled cores.This dissolution as a late-stage event is demonstrated by the complete lack of compaction effects on the secondary pores and diagenetic products despite present burial depths in excess of 3000 m.These observations,coupled with an absence of systematic trends linked to the unconformity surface in respects of reservoir porosity,feldspar amount and dissolution,and kaolinization,lead to the conclusion that there has been no effect of the Mid-Cimmerian Unconformity on reservoir quality in the Kittiwake Field.There is no evidence for leaching or cementation linked to meteoric water influx either shortly after deposition or following the uplift and exposure,which led to development of the Mid-Cimmerian Unconformity.Instead,we propose that the late-stage dissolution of feldspar and generation of secondary porosity are most likely related to the influx of organic acids and carbon dioxide generated either from thermogenic maturation of the source rock or from biodegradation of oil within the reservoir near the oil-water contact(OWC)transition zone.Abdulati Araibi Dorrik Stow Helen Lever Zeinab Smillie 2021Energy Geoscience2021,2,4:0
