1The use of poly(styrene-block-isobutyleneblock-styrene)as a microshunt to treat glaucoma显示文摘The InnFocus MicroShuntVR is a minimally invasive glaucoma drainage microtube used to shunt aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye to a flap formed under the conjunctiva and Tenon’s capsule.The safety and clinical performance of this device approaches that of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C,the current‘gold standard’treatment for advanced glaucoma.The invention of a new biomaterial called poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene)or‘SIBS’is the enabling factor which led to the success of this product.SIBS is ultrastable with virtually no foreign body reaction in the body,which manifests as clinically insignificant inflammation and capsule formation in the eye.The lack of capsule formation enables unobstructed flow through the 70 mm lumen tube and the achievement of controlled low intraocular pressure,which is important for the management of glaucoma.This article summarizes the integration of SIBS into a glaucoma drainage device and confirms its functionality with clinical success over a 2-year period.Leonard Pinchuk Isabelle Riss Juan F.Batlle Yasushi P.Kato John B.Martin Esdras Arrieta Paul Palmberg Richard K.Parrish Bruce A.Weber Yongmoon Kwon Jean-Marie Parel 2016Regenerative Biomaterials2016,3,2:5

5Seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Sw.) performance under shade in multi-environment trials显示文摘Shade caused by trees or buildings can affect the quality and growth of turfgrasses.Thus,breeding for shade tolerance is an essential component of most turfgrass improvement programs.The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of seashore paspalum(Paspalum vaginatum Sw.)breeding lines under shade in multi-environment trials.Germplasm sources were 20 lines from the University of Georgia seashore paspalum breeding program and two checks,the cultivars'SeaDwarf'and'SeaStar'.Field trials were conducted from 2016 to 2019 under shade structures designed to reduce ambient sunlight at three locations:Citra(FL),Tifton(GA),and Raleigh(NC).The response variables evaluated were percent living ground cover(%GC),dark green color index(DGCI),canopy height(CH)and turfgrass quality(TQ).Data were analyzed by mixed model approaches using ASReml-R,and the t-statistics were used to group the entries.Significant genetic variances were observed in the single-location-repeated-measures analysis for CH and DGCI at Citra and Tifton,%GC at Citra,and TQ at Raleigh.Spearman correlations of the predicted values for entries between locations ranged from low to moderate,with the exception of between Citra and Tifton(0.76)for CH.There were a few breeding lines with superior performance to the entry average for all traits for which the entry variance was significant.In conclusion,genetic variability was observed for all traits and superior seashore paspalum breeding lines for multiple traits were identified under shade.Beatriz Tome Gouveia Paul Raymer Brian M.Schwartz Esteban F.Rios Kevin E.Kenworthy J.Bryan Unruh Charles Fontanier Esdras M.Carbajal Jason Kruse Natasha K.Restuccia Susana R.Milla-Lewis 2021Grass Research2021,1,1:0
6Performance and playability of experimental low-input coarsetextured zoysiagrass in multiple climates显示文摘A 3-year experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance and playability of 24 coarse-textured zoysiagrass(Zoysia spp.Willd.)experimental genotypes in comparison to five commercially available cultivars maintained as a low-maintenance turf across multiple climates(Indiana,North Carolina,Georgia,Arizona,and California).Following establishment in 2018,plots were maintained under low-maintenance regimes and evaluated for quality,density,uniformity,color,winterkill damage,drought resistance,and golf ball lie in 2019 and 2020.A turf performance index(TPI)was calculated for each treatment at each site,which represented the number of times the treatment occurred in the top statistical group.The unique climate for each site led to differences in TPI scores.For instance,the arid climates of Arizona and California resulted in distinct differences in performance among treatments compared to the other sites.However,consistencies in performance across sites were also observed.For example,the 2018−2019 winter resulted in winterkill differences among entries in both Indiana and North Carolina,which led to some similarities in TPI.Furthermore,the southern humid climates of North Carolina and Georgia produced consistencies in overall TPI.Under the minimal inputs and the hot-humid or arid climates evaluated in this study,all of the check cultivars were some of the poorest performing treatments,which clearly illustrates there is a need for breeding programs to develop zoysiagrass genotypes for these climates.However,experimental lines that exhibited excellent persistence under these conditions were identified indicating the genetic potential for wider adaptation to lower input environments exists within the species.Ross C.Braun Susana R.Milla-Lewis Esdras M.Carbajal Brian M.Schwartz Aaron J.Patton 2021Grass Research2021,1,1:0
7Analysis of 12 variants in the development of gastric and colorectal cancers显示文摘AIM To evaluate the relation between 12 polymorphisms and the development of gastric cancer(GC) and colorectal cancer(CRC).METHODS In this study,we included 125 individuals with GC diagnosis,66 individuals with CRC diagnosis and 475 cancer-free individuals. All participants resided in the North region of Brazil and authorized the use of their samples. The 12 polymorphisms(in CASP8,CYP2 E1,CYP19 A1,IL1 A,IL4,MDM2,NFKB1,PAR1,TP53,TYMS,UGT1 A1 and XRCC1 genes) were genotyped in a single PCR for each individual,followed by fragment analysis. To avoid misinterpretation due to population substructure,we applied a previously developed set of 61 ancestryinformative markers that can also be genotyped by multiplex PCR. The statistical analyses were performed in Structure v.2.3.4,R environment and SPSS v.20.RESULTS After statistical analyses with the control of confounding factors,such as genetic ancestry,three markers(rs79071878 in IL4,rs3730485 in MDM2 and rs28362491 in NFKB1) were positively associated with the development of GC. One of these markers(rs28362491) and the marker in the UGT1 A1 gene(rs8175347) were positively associated with the development of CRC. Therefore,we investigated whether the joint presence of the deleterious alleles of each marker could affect the development of cancer and we obtained positive results in all analyses. Carriers of the combination of alleles RP1 + DEL(rs79071878 and rs28361491,respectively) are at 10-times greater risk of developing GC than carriers of other combinations.
