Environmental and technological effects on ancient social evolution at different spatial scales显示文摘The rise and fall of ancient cultures and civilizations is a hotly debated topic that has generated disagreements and disputes. In this paper we summarize some case studies on the abandonment of ancient sites, the prosperity and collapse of ancient cultures, and demographic changes, as well as the influence of environment and technology during the prehistoric and historic periods. We then suggest that the dominant influencing factors for the evolution of ancient societies vary by spatial scale. At the local scale, sudden disasters are critical factors leading to the destruction and abandonment of large settlements. On a regional scale, climatic variations(e.g., droughts or cold events lasting for decades or centuries) are important factors that induce the collapse of ancient civilizations and mass migrations, while an enduring and stable optimal climate facilitated the prosperity of ancient civilizations. On a global scale, major technological innovations and their dispersion lasting for centuries and even millennia are major catalysts for population growth and social development. Lastly, we illustrate a possible mechanism under which environmental and technological factors played a critical role in ancient human survival and social evolution on different spatial scales.DONG GuangHui LIU FengWen CHEN FaHu 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,12:10
Multiple evidences indicate no relationship between prehistoric disasters in Lajia site and outburst flood in upper Yellow River valley, China显示文摘All around the world, ancient legends exist about the Great Flood, and the influence of the Great Flood in human evolutionary history is a hotly debated topic. In China, the legend of the prehistoric Great Flood and Yu the Great's flood control has a long history and is considered to be closely linked to the establishment of the Xia Dynasty. However, there is a lack of solid scientific evidence. Against this issue, some scholars have proposed that an earthquake around 1920 BCE in the Guanting Basin along the upper reaches of the Yellow River led to the creation of a lake by damming in the Jishi Gorge and that the outburst of water from that lake led to the massive flood in the Yellow River region. These studies provided new scientific evidence for the Chinese legend. In this paper, we date skeletal samples embedded in earthquake sand blasting from the Lajia site, analyze remains from natural disasters(such as earthquakes and floods) and also archaeological remains. In addition, we compared the skeletal samples dating with that of sediments from the dammed-up lake. Our results are inconsistent with those of previous scholars. The earthquake at the Lajia site occurred no earlier than 1800 BCE, and the dammed-up lake in Jishi Gorge had disappeared by 3600 BCE. Thus, the formation and outburst of the dammed lake, the sudden death of ancient humans at the Lajia site and the ancient earthquake were independent events occurring at different times. In addition, the massive flood in the upper reaches of the Yellow River did not actually happen. Thus, we argue against and invalidate the hypothesis that the massive flood was related to Yu the Great's flood control and the establishment of the Xia Dynasty.DONG GuangHui ZHANG FanYu LIU FengWen ZHANG DongJu ZHOU AiFeng YANG YiShi WANG GongHui 2018Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,4:7
Prehistoric agriculture development in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, southwest China: Archaeobotanical evidence显示文摘The origin, development and expansion of prehistoric agriculture in East Asia have been widely investigated over the past two decades using archaeobotanical analysis from excavated Neolithic and Bronze Age sites. Research on prehistoric agriculture has predominantly focused in the valleys of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. Agricultural development during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau of southwest China, an important passageway for human migration into Southeast Asia, still remains unclear. In this paper, based on macrofossil and microfossil analysis and radiocarbon dating at the Shilinggang site, we investigate plant subsistence strategies in the Nujiang River valley during the Bronze Age period. Combined with previous archaeobotanical studies in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, we explore agricultural development processes in this area during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Our results indicate that rice and foxtail millet were cultivated in Shilinggang around 2500 cal a BP. Three phases of prehistoric agricultural development in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau can be identified: rice cultivation from 4800–3900 cal a BP, mixed rice and millet crop(foxtail millet and broomcorn millet) cultivation from 3900–3400 cal a BP, and mixed rice, millet crop and wheat cultivation from 3400–2300 cal a BP. The development of agriculture in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods was primarily promoted by prehistoric agriculture expansion across Eurasia, agricultural expansion which was also affected by the topographic and hydrological characteristics of the area.LI HaiMing ZUO XinXin KANG LiHong REN LeLe LIU FengWen LIU HongGao ZHANG NaiMeng MIN Rui LIU Xu DONG GuangHui 2016Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,8:6
Detecting anthropogenic impact on forest succession from the perspective of wood exploitation on the northeast Tibetan Plateau during the late prehistoric period显示文摘Human activities are usually considered to have had impacts on forest degradation and/or changes of forest composition in the past. The Tibetan Plateau,an environmentally sensitive area, has witnessed a high intensity of human activities since the late Neolithic, but the evidence is still incomplete concerning how human activities affected the environment, especially vegetation changes. This may result,in part, from the fact that research on prehistoric wood utilization by humans in the northeast Tibetan Plateau(NETP)is scarce, especially from the perspective of charcoal analysis, which is an archaeological index directly related to human activities. To fill this gap,we report new data here concerning charcoal analysis from 24 archaeological sites dated 5200–2300 a BP in the NETP,where this period saw remarkable environmental and social changes.By coupling the results with published paleoenvironment records(especially pollen),we aim to explore the utilization of wood and its spatial-temporal changes,as well as the anthropogenic impacts on past forest dynamics in the NETP.The results suggest that the wood resources collected by humans were mainly needleleaf trees(Picea L.and Pinus L.),broadleaved trees(Populus L.,Salix L.,and Betula)as well as shrubs(Hippophae L.and Tamarix L.),and that these were distributed around the human habitation areas. There was a clear spatial difference in the woody assemblage collected by humans in the period 3600–2300 a BP.This was likely related to the diversity of natural environments in local areas, but there was an abnormal spatial pattern of forest composition with broadleaved trees dominant above 2500 masl caused not by climate change, but by the rapid increase of human settlement and wood collection in high altitude areas of the NETP since 3600 a BP.Fengwen LIU Shanjia ZHANG Hucai ZHANG Guanghui DONG 2022Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,11:3

A fully biodegradable polydioxanone occluder for ventricle septal defect closure显示文摘Ventricular septal defect(VSD)is one of the commonest congenital heart diseases(CHDs).Current occluders for VSD treatment are mainly made of nitinol, which has the risk of nickel allergy, persistent myocardial abrasion and fatal arrythmia.Herein,a fully biodegradable polydioxanone(PDO)occluder equipped with a shape line and poly-L-lactic acid PLLA membranes is developed for VSD closure without the addition of metal marker.PDO occluder showed great mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, geometry fitness, biocompatibility and degradability. In a rat subcutaneous implantation model,PDO filaments significantly alleviated inflammation response, mitigated fibrosis and promoted endothelialization compared with nitinol. The safety and efficacy of PDO occluder were confirmed in a canine VSD model with 3-year follow-up,demonstrating the biodegradable PDO occluder could not only effectively repair VSD,induce cardiac remodeling but also address the complications associated with metal occluders.Furthermore,a pilot clinical trial with five VSD patients indicated that all the occluders were successfully implanted under the guidance of echocardiography and no adverse events occurred during the 3-month follow-up.Collectively,the fully bioresorbable PDO occluder is safe and effective for clinical VSD closure and holds great promise for the treatment of structural CHDs.Zefu Li Pengxu Kong Xiang Liu Shuyi Feng Wenbin Ouyang Shouzheng Wang Xiaopeng Hu Yongquan Xie Fengwen Zhang Yuxin Zhang Rui Gao Weiwei Wang Xiangbin Pan 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,6:1
Radiation Retinopathy Associated with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion显示文摘Purpose: To report a case of radiation retinopathy associated with central retinal vein occlusion. Methods: The clinical features and fundus fluorescein angiography of this case were analyzed. Results: The patient had been treated with radiotherapy for her nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and presented with sudden visual loss in the left eye. The funduscopic examination and fluorescein angiography showed the features of radiation retinopathy in both eyes, and central retinal vein occlusion in the left eye. Conclusions: Radiation retinopathy can be associated with central retinal vein occlusion in the same eye, and it seems that the endothelial cell loss caused by radiation retinopathy may lead to retinal vein occlusion.Yan Liu FengWen 2007眼科学报2007,23,2:1
β-Ga2O3 MOSFETs on the Si substrate fabricated by the ion-cutting process显示文摘β-Ga2O3 MOSFETs are demonstrated on heterogeneous Ga2O3-Al2O3-Si(GaOISi)substrate fabricated by ion-cutting process.Enhancement(E)-and depletion(D)-modeβ-Ga2O3 transistors are realized on by varying the channel thickness(Tch).E-mode GaOISi transistor with a Tchof 15 nm achieves a high threshold voltage VTHof^8 V.With the same T increase,GaOISi transistors demonstrate more stable ON-current IONand OFF-current IOFFperformance compared to the reported devices on bulk Ga2O3 wafer.Transistors on GaOISi achieve the breakdown voltage of 522 and 391 V at 25°C and 200°C,respectively.YiBo Wang WenHui Xu TianGui You FengWen Mu HaoDong Hu Yan Liu Hao Huang Tadatomo Suga GenQuan Han Xin Ou Yue Hao 2020Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2020,63,7:1

Undrained stability of pit-in-pit braced excavations under hydraulic uplift显示文摘Pit-in-pit(PIP)excavations in an aquifer–aquitard system likely undergo catastrophic failures under the hydraulic uplift, the associated undrained stability problem, however, has not been well analyzed in the past.To this end,a hypothetical model of PIP braced excavation in typical soil layers of Shanghai,China is developed using the finite element limit analysis(FELA)tool. The FELA solutions of safety factors(FSs)against hydraulic uplift are verified with the results from the finite element analysis with strength reduction technique(SRFEA)and existing design approaches.Subsequently,FELA is employed to identify the triggering and failure mechanisms of PIP braced excavations subjected to hydraulic uplift.A series of parametric studies considering the various geometric configurations of the PIP excavation, undrained shear strengths of aquitard, and artesian pressures are carried out.The sensitivities of relevant design parameters are further assessed using a multivariate adaptive regression splines(MARS)model that is capable of accurately capturing the nonlinear relationships between a set of input variables and output variables in multi-dimensions.A MARS-based design equation used for predicting FS is finally presented using the artificial dataset from FELA for practical design uses.Fengwen Lai Fuquan Chen Songyu Liu Suraparb Keawsawasvong Jim Shiau 2022Underground Space2022,7,6:1

Efficient thermal dissipation in wafer-scale heterogeneous integration of single-crystallineβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)thin film on SiC显示文摘The semiconductor,β-Ga_(2)O_(3)is attractive for applications in high power electronic devices with low conduction loss due to its ultra-wide bandgap(∼4.9 eV)and large Baliga’s figure of merit. However, the thermal conductivity ofβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)is much lower than that of other wide/ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors, such as SiC and GaN,which results in the deterioration ofβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)-based device performance and reliability due to self-heating.To overcome this problem,a scalable thermal management strategy was proposed by heterogeneously integrating wafer-scale single-crystallineβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)thin films on a highly thermally conductive SiC substrate.Characterization of the transferredβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)thin film indicated a uniform thickness to within±2.01%,a smooth surface with a roughness of 0.2 nm,and good crystalline quality with an X-ray rocking curves(XRC)full width at half maximum of 80 arcsec.Transient thermoreflectance measurements were employed to investigate the thermal properties. The thermal performance of the fabricatedβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)/SiC heterostructure was effectively improved in comparison with that of theβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)bulk wafer, and the effective thermal boundary resistance could be further reduced to 7.5 m 2 K/GW by a post-annealing process.Schottky barrier diodes(SBDs)were fabricated on both aβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)/SiC heterostructured material and aβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)bulk wafer.Infrared thermal imaging revealed the temperature increase of the SBDs onβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)/SiC to be one quarter that on theβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)bulk wafer with the same applied power, which suggests that the combination of the-Ga_(2)O_(3)thin film and SiC substrate with high thermal conductivity promotes heat dissipation inβ-Ga_(2)O_(3)-based devices.Wenhui Xu Tiangui You Yibo Wang Zhenghao Shen Kang Liu Lianghui Zhang Huarui Sun Ruijie Qian Zhenghua An Fengwen Mu Tadatomo Suga Genquan Han Xin Ou Yue Hao Xi Wang 2021Fundamental Research2021,1,6:0
Spatiotemporal variation of agricultural patterns in different geomorphologic and climatic environments in the eastern Loess Plateau,north-central China during the late Neolithic and Bronze Ages显示文摘Human settlement and agricultural development are closely linked to local geomorphological and climatic environments. However, the variation in agricultural systems in different environmental and prehistoric contexts remains unknown. We report new archaeobotanical and radiocarbon dates from 34 Neolithic and Bronze Age sites in the Hutuo River Valley(HTRV)in north-central China and compare them with updated archaeobotanical studies in the Sushui River Valley(SSRV)and Henan Province(HNP),to explore the similarities and differences of agricultural patterns under different geomorphologic and climatic environments in north-central China. Our results reveal that humans consistently cultivated foxtail and broomcorn millet in the HTRV from the Miaodigou(6000–5700 cal.a BP)to the Shang-Zhou(3600–2256 cal.a BP)period, despite the introduction of wheat and barley into the area around 4000 a BP.Climate conditions and hilly landforms in the HTRV,SSRV and some parts of the HNP led people to develop foxtail and broomcorn millet dry land farming practices between 7000 and 3000 a BP.Alternatively,in other areas of the HNP,the climate conditions and alluvial plains enabled people to develop a mixed agriculture of millets, soybeans, and rice from 7000 to 4000 a BP,with the addition of wheat between 4000 and 3000 a BP.Farmers’different agricultural technologies and interactions with foreign cultures may have also influenced the formation of different agricultural patterns in the three regions between 7000 and 3000 a BP.Population growth during 7000–3000 a BP can explain the overall propensity of the higher-yield foxtail millet rather than broomcorn millet as the main cultivated crop.In the HTRV,however, higher proportions of broomcorn millet(as compared to the SSRV and HNP),may reflect the greater drought and heat tolerance of broomcorn millet, representing an adaptive agricultural strategy in the river valley.Haiming LI Yifu CUI Nathaniel JAMES Melissa RITCHEY Fengwen LIU Junna ZHANG Minmin MA Guanghui DONG 2022Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,5:0

Quantitative studies on charcoalification:Physical and chemical changes of charring wood显示文摘Charcoal is commonly preserved in both natural and artificial sediments, and is intensively used in paleontological, paleoenvironmental, and archaeological studies due to the abundant bio-information it contains. The biochemical properties of charcoal are also used for paleoclimatic reconstruction;however, the reliability of this approach has been challenged due to a lack of clarity on how physicochemical properties change during the charring process,as well as the temperatures required for charcoalification. To address this lack,in this study,Qinghai spruce and Chinese pine wood samples from the northeastern Tibetan Plateau were heated at different temperatures and for different lengths of time under restricted oxygen conditions. The reflectance;carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen content;and tracheid morphology were quantified before and after heating to assess changes related to the charring process.Archaeological charcoal remains were then evaluated to determine the charcoalification temperatures by comparing with the experimental results. The minimum temperature required for wood charcoalification was∼300℃,while temperatures recorded by archaeological charcoal were concentrated at 400-500℃.During the charring experiments, the tracheid cell walls gradually homogenized, and tracheid cell wall thickness and lumen area decreased by∼20%.On average,50%mass losses were observed;the carbon and oxygen content(%wt.)approximately changed from 47%to 60%and 48%to 35%respectively,while the nitrogen content(%wt.)fluctuated around 0.2%.The reflectance increased slightly from 0%to 0.5%.We propose that the charcoalification of wood tissue refers to charring(in restricted air)and carbonization(in the almost absence of air)when the wood is exposed to a heat source, which then finally transforms into a black, inert solid. This quantitative study provided valuable data and a thorough assessment of the process of wood charcoalification,as well as accurately estimated the feasibility of using charcoal physicochemical properties in paleoclimatic research.Gang Li Linlin Gao Fengwen Liu Menghan Qiu Guanghui Dong 2024Fundamental Research2024,4,1:0
