| 1 | Markers of systemic inflammation and colorectal adenoma risk: Meta-analysis of observational studies显示文摘AIM To perform a meta-analysis of observational studies on inflammatory markers levels and occurrence of colorectal adenoma.METHODS Pub Med and EMBASE databases were searched until March 2016 for the articles reporting on the circulating levels of inflammatory markers, including: C-reactive protein(CRP), interleukin-6(IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-a) and risk of colorectal adenoma. Random-effects models were used to calculate summary odds ratios(ORs) with 95%CIs for the highest vs lowest category of exposure. Heterogeneity was assessed by using the Q test and I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were also performed to test for potential source of heterogeneity.RESULTS A total of 14 case-control studies were included. Ten studies on CRP including a total of 3350 cases and 4168 controls showed non-significant summary(OR = 1.23, 95%CI: 0.98-1.54; I2 = 54%, P heterogeneity = 0.01) in the general analysis, but significant increased odds when considering only advanced adenoma(OR = 1.59, 95%CI: 1.09-2.32; I2 = 44%, P heterogeneity = 0.15). Subgroup and stratified analyses revealed a potential influence of smoking status and aspirin use on the association between CRP levels and colorectal adenoma. Five studies examined the association between circulating levels of TNF-a and colorectal adenoma risk, including a total of 1,568 cases and 2,832 controls. The summary OR for the highest vs the lowest category of exposure was 1.00(95%CI: 0.77-1.29). The relationship between circulating IL-6 levels and colorectal adenoma risk was investigated in 7 studies including a total of 1936 cases and 3611 controls. The summary OR for the highest vs the lowest category of exposure was 1.19(95%CI: 0.92-1.55).CONCLUSION Summary of current evidence suggests a positive association of CRP levels and advanced colorectal adenoma risk. The role of potential confounding factors should be further evaluated. | Justyna Godos Antonio Biondi Fabio Galvano Francesco Basile Salvatore Sciacca Edward L Giovannucci Giuseppe Grosso | 2017 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,10: | 5 |
| 2 | L-carnitine supplementation improves hematological pattern in patients affected by HCV treated with Peg interferon-α 2b plus ribavirin显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of L-carnitine on alleviating anemia, thrombocytopenia and leukopenia, and minimizing dose reductions in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV)in treatment with Interferonα(IFN-α)plus ribavirin.METHODS:Sixty-nine patients with chronic hepatitis C were enrolled in the study and divided into two groups.group A(n=35)received Peg-IFN-α2b plus ribavirin plus L-carnitine,and group B(n=34)received Peg-IFN-αand ribavirin for 12 mo.All patients underwent laboratory investigations including:red cell count,he-moglobin,white cell count, platelets, bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and viremia.RESULTS:After 12 mo in group A compared to group B we observed significant differences in AST 108.8 vs 76.8(IU/L;P<0.001),ALT 137.vs 112.3(IU/L;P 0.001),viremia 4.04 vs 2.36(106 copies/mL;P< 0.001),Hb 1 vs 3.5(g/dL;P<0.05),red blood cells 0.3 vs 1.1(X1012/L;P0.001),white blood cells 1.5 vs 3(10/L;Pn0.001)and platelets 86 vs 85(×10/L;P0.001).The end treatment responders were 18 vs 12(60%vs>44%)and the non responders were 12 vs 15(40%vs<50%)[odds ratio(OR)1.65,n5%CI =0.65-5.37,P<0.05?.In group A compared to group B there was a significant improvement of sustained vi-rological response in 15 vs 7 patients(50%vs>25%),while the relapsers were 3 vs 5(10%vs<18%)(OR>3.57,n5%CI=0.65-1n.3,Pn0.001).CONCLUSION:L-carnitine supplementations modulate erythropoiesis, leucopoiesis and thrombocytopoiesis, and may be useful in patients treated for HCV.L-carni-tine treatment offers the possibility of achieving a sustained virological response while preventing overtreatment. | Michele Malaguarnera Marco Vacante Maria Giordano Massimo Motta Gaetano Bertino Manuela Pennisi Sergio Neri Mariano Malaguarnera Giovanni Li Volti Fabio Galvano | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,39: | 4 |

| 4 | Moro orange juice prevents fatty liver in mice显示文摘AIM:To establish if the juice of Moro,an anthocyaninrich orange, may improve liver damage in mice with diet-induced obesity.METHODS:Eight-week-old mice were fed a high-fat diet(HFD) and were administrated water or Moro juice for 12 wk.Liver morphology, gene expression of lipid transcription factors, and metabolic enzymes were assessed.RESULTS:Mice fed HFD displayed increased body weight, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.Moro juice administration limited body weight gain, enhanced insulin sensitivity, and decreased serum triglycerides and total cholesterol.Mice fed HFD showed liver steatosis associated with ballooning.Dietary Moro juice markedly improved liver steatosis by inducing the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α and its target gene acylCoA-oxidase,a key enzyme of lipid oxidation.Consistently,Moro juice consumption suppressed the expression of liver X receptor-α and its target gene fatty acid synthase, and restored liver glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase 1 activity.CONCLUSION:Moro juice counteracts liver steatogenesis in mice with diet-induced obesity and thus may represent a promising dietary option for the prevention of fatty liver. | Federico Salamone Giovanni Li Volti Lucilla Titta Lidia Puzzo Ignazio Barbagallo Francesco La Delia Shira Zelber-Sagi Michele Malaguarnera Pier Giuseppe Pelicci Marco Giorgio Fabio Galvano | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,29: | 2 |
| 5 | Natural heme oxygenase-1 inducers in hepatobiliary function显示文摘Many physiological effects of natural antioxidants, their extracts or their major active components, have been reported in recent decades. Most of these compounds are characterized by a phenolic structure, similar to that of α-tocopherol,and present antioxidant proper-ties that have been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo.Polyphenols may increase the capacity of en-dogenous antioxidant defences and modulate the cellu-lar redox state.Changes in the cellular redox state may have wide-ranging consequences for cellular growth and differentiation. The majority of in vitro and in vivo studies conducted so far have attributed the protective effect of bioactive polyphenols to their chemical reac-tivity toward free radicals and their capacity to prevent the oxidation of important intracellular components. However,in recent years a possible novel aspect in the mode of action of these compounds has been sug-gested; that is,the ultimate stimulation of the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway is likely to account for the established and powerful antioxidant/anti-inflam-matory properties of these polyphenols. The products of the HO-catalyzed reaction, particularly carbon mon-oxide (CO) and biliverdin/bilirubin have been shown to exert protective effects in several organs against oxidative and other noxious stimuli. In this context,it is interesting to note that induction of HO-1 expression by means of natural compounds contributes to protec-tion against liver damage in various experimental mod-els.The focus of this review is on the significance of targeted induction of HO-1 as a potential therapeutic strategy to protect the liver against various stressors in several pathological conditions. | Giovanni Li Volti David Sacerdoti Claudia Di Giacomo Maria Luisa Barcellona Antonio Scacco Paolo Murabito Antonio Biondi Francesco Basile Diego Gazzolo Raul Abella Alessandro Frigiola Fabio Galvano | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,40: | 2 |
