1Advances in Tropical Soil Characterization via Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry显示文摘Portable X-ray fluorescence(pXRF) spectrometers can be used to determine the elemental composition easily, rapidly, and without using chemical reagents, which is very important for tropical regions due to the lack of detailed soil characterization data. Moreover,pXRF data can be used to predict the results of more expensive, time-consuming, and conventional laboratory analyses. This study sought to determine the elemental composition of various soil profiles using pXRF. Two operational modes(Trace Mode and General Mode) and two scanning time(30 and 60 s) were assessed to determine their effects on the correlation of pXRF dataset with respect to conventional inductively coupled plasma(ICP)-optical emission spectrometry analysis. This relationship has been reported in previous studies, however, few studies were performed on tropical soils, which are unique. Furthermore, such relationships establish the viability of developing prediction models directly from pXRF data. Linear regression was applied to develop calibration models for the prediction of ICP analysis results and exchangeable and available elemental contents based on pXRF data. High coefficients of determination(R^2) were obtained for Ca(0.87), Cu(0.90), Fe(0.95), Mn(0.85), Cr(0.95), V(0.72), and Ni(0.90), with adequate validation. Statistically significant results were not found for Al, K, Zn, Ti, and Zr. The models predicting the exchangeable Ca based on the total Ca from p XRF reached an R^2 of up to 0.85. Operational modes influenced the pXRF results. Our results illustrate that pXRF holds great promise for tropical soil characterization and the development of prediction models, justifying the need for larger-scale studies in tropical countries worldwide.Elen A. 2Quantitative analysis of conjunctival microvasculature imaged using optical coherence tomography angiography显示文摘Background:The goal was to quantitatively analyze the bulbar conjunctival microvascular density using optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)and compare it to the vessel density using functional slit-lamp biomicroscopy(FSLB).Methods:Temporal bulbar conjunctiva of 20 eyes(10 healthy subjects)was imaged using both OCTA and FSLB.Image processing was performed including equalization,de-noising,thresholding,and skeletonization.The vessel density was measured by fractal analysis(box counting,Dbox)and pixel counting(%).Results:Vessel density(Dbox)of the bulbar conjunctiva obtained using OCTA was 1.28±0.01 Dbox,which was significantly lower than the result(1.32±0.01 Dbox,P<0.001)obtained using FSLB.Furthermore,the vessel density(%)obtained using OCTA was 3.31±0.12%,which was also significantly lower than the result(3.69±0.16%,P<0.001)obtained using FSLB.No significant correlations(r ranged from 0.21 to 0.32,P>0.05)between both instruments were found in both vessel density methods(Dbox and percentage).However,in each of the devices,vessel density in Dbox was significantly correlated with the vessel density in percentage(r=1.0 for FSLB and r=0.98 for OCTA,both P<0.001).Conclusion:This study demonstrated that the vessel density of the bulbar conjunctiva obtained using OCTA can be quantified,and the results were not compatible with that obtained using slit-lamp biomicroscopy photography.Zhiping Liu Hua Wang Hong Jiang Giovana Rosa Gameiro Jianhua Wang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:4

4Retinal tissue hypoperfusion in patients with clinical Alzheimer’s disease显示文摘Background:It remains unknow whether retinal tissue perfusion occurs in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.The goal was to determine retinal tissue perfusion in patients with clinical Alzheimer’s disease(CAD).Methods:Twenty-four CAD patients and 19 cognitively normal(CN)age-matched controls were recruited.A retinal function imager(RFI,Optical Imaging Ltd.,Rehovot,Israel)was used to measure the retinal blood flow supplying the macular area of a diameter of 2.5 mm centered on the fovea.Blood flow volumes of arterioles(entering the macular region)and venules(exiting the macular region)of the supplied area were calculated.Macular blood flow was calculated as the average of arteriolar and venular flow volumes.Custom ultra-high-resolution optical coherence tomography(UHR–OCT)was used to calculate macular tissue volume.Automated segmentation software(Orion,Voxeleron LLC,Pleasanton,CA)was used to segment six intra-retinal layers in the 2.5 mm(diameter)area centered on the fovea.The inner retina(containing vessel network),including retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL),ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer(GCIPL),inner nuclear layer(INL)and outer plexiform layer(OPL),was segmented and tissue volume was calculated.Perfusion was calculated as the flow divided by the tissue volume.Results:The tissue perfusion in CAD patients was 2.58±0.79 nl/s/mm^(3)(mean±standard deviation)and was significantly lower than in CN subjects(3.62±0.44 nl/s/mm^(3),P<0.01),reflecting a decrease of 29%.The flow volume was 2.82±0.92 nl/s in CAD patients,which was 31%lower than in CN subjects(4.09±0.46 nl/s,P<0.01).GCIPL tissue volume was 0.47±0.04 mm^(3) in CAD patients and 6%lower than CN subjects(0.50±0.05 mm^(3),P<0.05).No other significant alterations were found in the intra-retinal layers between CAD and CN participants.Conclusions:This study is the first to show decreased retinal tissue perfusion that may be indicative of diminished tissue metabolic activity in patients with clinical Alzheimer’s disease.Giovana Rosa Gameiro Hong Jiang Yi Liu Yuqing Deng Xiaoyan Sun Bernardo Nascentes Bernard Baumel Tatjana Rundek Jianhua Wang 2018Eye and Vision2018,5,1:2
5Similar Soils but Different Soil-Forming Factors: Converging Evolution of Inceptisols in Brazil显示文摘Soils result from the interaction of five independent formation factors.If one factor varies,while the others remain constant,different soils can be produced.Herein,we demonstrated an opposing trend,wherein two soils were similar,despite considerable differences in all factors of soil formation.We sampled two Inceptisols(Oxic Dystrudepts) formed on different parent materials(gneiss vs.mica schist),climate(tropical altimontane vs.warmer,drier plateau),topography(1 650 m,45% slope vs.1 000 m,8% slope),time(rejuvenated vs.old,stable surface),and vegetation(rainforest vs.Cerrado savanna).The two soils had similar chemical properties,whereas the soil on mica schist had finer particle size distribution,lower porosity,and lower saturated hydraulic conductivity.These properties were related to a coarser blocky microstructure compared to the soil on gneiss.Both soils presented active mineral weathering and pronounced pedoplasmation,demonstrated by clay contents>300 g kg^(-1),although only the Dystrudept on gneiss possessed coarse rock fragments.The C horizons of both soils presented fragmented clay coatings suggestive of argilluviation,likely relict,because they were not observed in the B horizons.The similarities in many properties of the two Dystrudepts,despite contrasting factors of soil formation,suggest converging evolution and that soil classification at the subgroup level was efficient in grouping similar formative processes in tropical conditions.Moreover,this work revealed that similar pedogenic processes acting on different factors of soil formation can result in similar soil properties,at least for Inceptisols where further soil development is hindered by topographic limitations.Alba L.A.SKORUPA Sérgio H.G.SILVA Giovana C.POGGERE Diego TASSINARI Leundro C.PINTO Yuri L.ZINN Nilton CURI 2017Pedosphere2017,27,4:2

15Current impact of viral hepatitis on liver cancer development: The challenge remains显示文摘Chronic infections due to hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses are responsible for most cases of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)worldwide,and this association is likely to remain during the next decade.Moreover,viral hepatitis-related HCC imposes an important burden on public health in terms of disability-adjusted life years.In order to reduce such a burden,some major challenges must be faced.Universal vaccination against hepatitis B virus,especially in the neonatal period,is probably the most relevant primary preventive measure against the development of HCC.Moreover,considering the large adult population already infected with hepatitis B and C viruses,it is also imperative to identify these individuals to ensure their access to treatment.Both hepatitis B and C currently have highly effective therapies,which are able to diminish the risk of development of liver cancer.Finally,it is essential for individuals at high-risk of HCC to be included in surveillance programs,so that tumors are detected at an early stage.Patients with hepatitis B or C and advanced liver fibrosis or cirrhosis benefit from being followed in a surveillance program.As hepatitis B virus is oncogenic and capable of leading to liver cancer even in individuals with early stages of liver fibrosis,other high-risk groups of patients with hepatitis B are also candidates for surveillance.Considerable effort is required concerning these strategies in order to decrease the incidence and the mortality of viral hepatitis-related HCC.Ângelo Zambam de Mattos Jose D Debes Andre Boonstra Ju-Dong Yang Domingo C Balderramo Giovana D P Sartori Angelo Alves de Mattos 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,24:1
16Microcirculation in the conjunctiva and retina in healthy subjects显示文摘Background:The aim was to determine the relationship between bulbar conjunctival microcirculation and retinal microcirculation in a healthy population.Method:A functional slit-lamp biomicroscope(FSLB)was used to measure blood flow velocity(BFV)and blood flow rate(BFR)in the conjunctiva while a retinal function imager(RFI)was used to measure macular BFV and BFR in the retina.One eye of each subject of 58 self-reported healthy subjects was imaged in the same session on the same day.Results:The mean BFV in the venules of the conjunctiva was 0.49±0.13 mm/s,which was significantly slower than that in the retinal arterioles(3.71±0.78 mm/s,P<0.001)and retinal venules(2.98±0.58 mm/s,P<0.001).The BFR in the conjunctiva(0.09 nl/s)was also significantly lower than that in the retina(arterioles=0.81 nl/s,venules=0.68 nl/s,all P<0.001).The BFVs and BFRs were not related between the conjunctiva and retina(r ranged from−0.17 to−0.05,all P>0.05).Conclusion:The microcirculation in the retina appeared to be different from that in the conjunctiva.Ce Shi Hong Jiang Giovana Rosa Gameiro Jianhua Wang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1

19Improving diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy with a medical food containing L-methylfolate: a preliminary report显示文摘Background:Homocysteine and vitamin D may play a role in the development of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus(DM)and hypertension.Supplementing food with L-methylfolate and vitamin D theoretically may improve diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy,however,the outcome of these nutritional approaches has not been fully examined.A retrospective case review was done of cases of retinopathy reversal in patients on Ocufolin^(TM) and a similar nonprescription multivitamin,Eyefolate^(TM).In this study,they were administered L-methylfolate(2.7 mg and 3.0 mg,respectively)and vitamin D3(4500 IU each).These dosages are significantly above the RDA but well below levels associated with toxicity.Case presentation:Seven patients had nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR)and some of them had hypertension.One patient had only hypertensive retinopathy.All patients were instructed to take Ocufolin^(TM)medical food as a food supplement.Baseline genetic testing for MTHFR polymorphisms was conducted.Fundus photography was used to document the fundus condition of the enrolled eyes in 8 NPDR patients at the initial and follow-up visits.Microaneurysms(MA)and exudates were observed to be improved in some trial patients.All subjects had one or more MTHFR polymorphisms.All had diabetic retinopathy,hypertensive retinopathy,or both.MAs were resolved,and exudates were decreased in 8/8 cases after taking the medical food.Retinal edema was found in 2/8 cases and improved or resolved in both cases after taking the medical food or the supplement.The best corrected visual activity was stable or improved in 8/8 cases.Conclusion:We report a series of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy cases with MTHFR polymorphisms and the improvement of retinal microvasculature(mainly MAs)in serial fundus photography after taking a medical food or supplement containing L-methylfolate and vitamin D.It appears that the use of nutritional supplements and medical foods containing L-methylfolate and vitamin D may be effective in facilitating the improvement of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy.Jianhua Wang Craig Brown Ce Shi Justin Townsend Giovana Rosa Gameiro Peng Wang Hong Jiang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1
