Challenges and Development Prospects of Ultra-Long and Ultra-Deep Mountain Tunnels显示文摘1. Introduction Social development has led to the placement of high standards on ultra-long and ultra-deep mountain tunnels. Disasters may be encountered during the construction and maintenance of such mountain tunnels due to high geostress, high geotemperature, high hydraulic pressure, and special adverse strata, in addition to various other problems caused by engineering activities. To deal with uncertain geological conditions during mountain tunnel construction, comprehensive geological prediction, refined monitoring, and dynamic design and construction methods based on information technology should be adopted. For the operation and maintenance of ultra-long tunnels, the concepts of dynamic evacuation rescue, active protection, energy conservation, and environmental protection should be fully embodied in order to address significant problems related to ventilation, rescue situations, and energy consumption. Moreover, integrated construction and maintenance should be carried out to achieve digital sensing and intelligent maintenance. | Hehua Zhu Jinxiu Yan Wenhao Liang | 2019 | Engineering2019,5,3: | 16
A continuous/discontinuous deformation analysis(CDDA)method based on deformable blocks for fracture modeling显示文摘In the framework of finite element meshes,a novel continuous/discontinuous deformation analysis(CDDA)method is proposed in this paper for modeling of crack problems. In the present CDDA,simple polynomial interpolations are defined at the deformable block elements, and a link element is employed to connect the adjacent block elements. The CDDA is particularly suitable for modeling the fracture propagation because the switch from continuous deformation analysis to discontinuous deformation analysis is natural and convenient without additional procedures. The SIFs(stress intensity factors)for various types of cracks, such as kinked cracks or curved cracks, can be easily computed in the CDDA by using the virtual crack extension technique(VCET).Both the formulation and implementation of the VCET in CDDA are simple and straightforward.Numerical examples indicate that the present CDDA can obtain high accuracy in SIF results with simple polynomial interpolations and insensitive to mesh sizes, and can automatically simulate the crack propagation without degrading accuracy. | Yongchang CAI Hehua ZHU Xiaoying ZHUANG | 2013 | Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2013,7,4: | 10
A modified method of discontinuity trace mapping using three-dimensional point clouds of rock mass surfaces显示文摘This paper presents an automated method for discontinuity trace mapping using three-dimensional point clouds of rock mass surfaces.Specifically, the method consists of five steps:(1)detection of trace feature points by normal tensor voting theory,(2)co ntraction of trace feature points,(3)connection of trace feature points,(4)linearization of trace segments,and(5)connection of trace segments.A sensitivity analysis was then conducted to identify the optimal parameters of the proposed method.Three field cases,a natural rock mass outcrop and two excavated rock tunnel surfaces, were analyzed using the proposed method to evaluate its validity and efficiency. The results show that the proposed method is more efficient and accurate than the traditional trace mapping method, and the efficiency enhancement is more robust as the number of feature points increases. | Keshen Zhang Wei Wu Hehua Zhu Lianyang Zhang Xiaojun Li Hong Zhang | 2020 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2020,12,3: | 6
Strain localization analyses of idealized sands in biaxial tests by distinct element method显示文摘This paper presents a numerical investigation on the strain localization of an idealized sand in biaxial compression tests using the distinct element method(DEM).In addition to the dilatancy and material frictional angle, the principal stress field, and distributions of void ratio, particle velocity, and the averaged pure rotation rate(APR)in the DEM specimen are examined to illustrate the link between microscopic and macroscopic variables in the case of strain localization. The study shows that strain localization of the granular material in the tests proceeds with localizations of void ratio, strain and APR,and distortions of stress field and force chains. In addition, both thickness and inclination of the shear band change with the increasing of axial swain, with the former valued around 10-14 times of mean grain diameter and the later overall described by the Mohr-Coulomb theory. | Mingjing JIANG Hehua ZHU Xiumei LI | 2010 | Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2010,4,2: | 4

A feasibility study of the measuring accuracy and capability of wireless sensor networks in tunnel monitoring显示文摘Fire disasters and the deterioration of tunnel structures are major concerns for tunnel operation and maintenance.Traditional wired monitoring systems have many drawbacks in terms of installation time, overall cost, and flexibility in tunnel environments. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of wireless sensor networks(WSNs)for the monitoring of various structural monitoring applications. This paper evaluated the feasibility of applying a WSN in the monitoring of tunnels. The monitoring requirements of tunnels under explosion and combustion fire scenarios are analyzed using numerical simulation, and the maximum possible distance for temperature sensors is derived. The displacement monitoring of tunnels using an inclinometer is investigated. It is recommended that the inclinometer should be installed in the 1/4 span of the tunnel structure. The maximum wireless transmission distances in both outdoor and tunnel environments were examined. The influences of surface materials and sensor node locations on the data transmission distance in tunnel environments were also investigated. The experimental results show that the data loss in tunnel environments is approximately three times that in outdoor environments.Surface material has a considerable influence on the transmission distance of radio signals. The distance is 25~28 m for a raw concrete surface,20 m for a brick surface, and 36 m for a terrazzo surface. The transmission distances along the middle of quarter points are approximately 0.9D(D is the transmission distance in the center of the tunnel),and the relative error is less than±3%.The transmission distances at different locations along the bottom exhibit significant differences, decreasing from the middle to the comer point, with distances of approximately 0.8D at the quarter points and minimum distances of approximately 0.55D at the comer points. | Xiaojun LI Zhong JI Hehua ZHU Chen GU | 2012 | Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2012,6,2: | 3
Strategic Cooperation with Differential Suppliers' Ability under Downstream Competition in Complex Products Systems显示文摘This paper investigates the strategic cooperation of two competitive suppliers with different abilities and a weak main manufacturer in Complex Products Systems (CoPS), where a main manufacturer signs a revenue-sharing contract based on a relationship-specific investment with the stronger supplier. The stronger supplier provides one key element to the main manufacturer and encroaches on the downstream market by producing substitutable final products simultaneously. We consider multi-period decisions, by building different models based on centralized, decentralized, and cooperative decisions. The equilibrium strategies are characterized under downstream competition, and optimal cooperation strategies are derived by building multi-period game models. The results show that strong cooperation can enhance the economic performance of each individual as well as the whole supply chain. The weak main manufacturer would face the risk of strong suppliers' supply interruptions when the competitive degree of suppliers and downstream competition are fierce enough under decentralized decisions. Additionally, the gap in the abilities of the two competitive suppliers reduces the main manufacturer's profitability. However the revenue-sharing contract based on a relationship-specific investment can motivate the strong supplier to establish cooperation relationship and improve both stakeholders' profitability. Moreover, strategic cooperation is efficient to prevent the strong supplier encroaching on downstream and has a positive impact on boosting the weak main manufacturer's market share. Meanwhile, nurturing a domestic supplier is an effective measure for improving competitiveness and indigenous technological capability of the main manufacturer in CoPS. Finally, some useful management sights on cooperation strategy and optimal decisions are derived. | Jinhua Zhou Jianjun Zhu Hehua Wang | 2019 | Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2019,28,4: | 2

Do civil engineering fronts emerge from interdisciplinary research?显示文摘Interdisciplinary research is considered a source of innovativeness and creativity, serving as a key mechanism for creating recombination necessary for the evolution of science systems. The aim of this study is to quantitatively establish the connection between interdisciplinary research and the research fronts that have recently emerged in civil engineering. The degree of interdisciplinarity of the research fronts was measured by developing metrics from bibliographic analyses. As indicated by the consistent increase in the metrics of interdisciplinarity over time, research fronts tend to emerge in studies with increasing diversity in the disciplines involved. The active disciplines involved in the fronts vary over time. The most active disciplines are no longer fundamental but those associated with energy, environment, and sustainable development, focusing on solutions to climate change and integrating intelligence technologies. | Jie HE Junlan YAO Xin CHEN Fang LIU Hehua ZHU | 2023 | Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2023,17,1: | 1

Evolutionary game analysis of problem processing mechanism in new collaboration显示文摘This paper analyzes a problem processing mechanism in a new collaboration system between the main manufacturer and the supplier in the'main manufacturer-supplier'mode,which has been widely applied in the collaborative development management of the complex product. This paper adopts the collaboration theory, the evolutionary game theory and numerical simulation to analyze the decision-making mechanism where one upstream supplier and one downstream manufacturer must process an unpredicted problem without any advance contract in common. Results show that both players'decision-makings are in some correlation with the initial state, income impact coefficients, and dealing cost.It is worth noting that only the initial state influences the final decision, while income impact coefficients and dealing cost just influence the decision process. This paper shows reasonable and practical suggestions for the manufacturer and supplier in a new collaboration system for the first time and is dedicated to the managerial implications on reducing risks of processing problems. | ZHANG Ming ZHU Jianjun WANG Hehua | 2021 | Journal of Systems Engineering and Electronics2021,32,1: | 1
Shape Memory Alloy Helical Microrobots with Transformable Capability towards Vascular Occlusion Treatment显示文摘Practical implementation of minimally invasive biomedical applications has been a long-sought goal for microrobots. In this field, most previous studies only demonstrate microrobots with locomotion ability or performing a single task, unable to be functionalized effectively. Here,we propose a biocompatible shape memory alloy helical microrobot with regulative structure transformation, making it possible to adjust its motion behavior and mechanical properties precisely.Especially, towards vascular occlusion problem, these microrobots reveal a fundamental solution strategy in the mechanical capability using shape memory effect.Such shape-transformable microrobots can not only manipulate thrust and torque by structure to enhance the unclogging efficiency as a microdriler but also utilize the high work energy to apply the expandable helical tail as a selfpropulsive stent. The strategy takes advantage of untethered manipulation to operate microsurgery without unnecessary damage. This study opens a route to functionalize microrobots via accurate tuning in structures, motions, and mechanical properties. | Hehua Zhang Borui Xu Yi Ouyang Yunqi Wang Hong Zhu Gaoshan Huang Jizhai Cui Yongfeng Mei | 2022 | Research2022,,4: | 1

Novel SfM-DLT method for metro tunnel 3D reconstruction and Visualization显示文摘Metro tunnels play a crucial role in urban transportation. However, with growing tunnel operation periods, defects, and large deformations appearing, these are influencing tunnel structural performance and threatening public safety.Three-dimensional(3D)tunnel reconstruction is an effective way to highlight tunnel conditions and provide a basis for engineering management and maintenance. However, the current methods of tunnel 3D reconstruction do not sufficiently combine the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of tunnel states. In this study,a novel method for metro tunnel 3D reconstruction based on structure from motion(SfM)and direct linear transformation(DLT)is proposed. The dimensionless 3D reconstruction point cloud acquired through the SfM method showcases the qualitative characteristics(such as leakage and pipelines)of the tunnel state. The close-range photogrammetry DLT method provides scale information missing from the SfM method and quantitative characteristics(such as profile deformation)of the tunnel state. The SfM-DLT method was tested in a Shanghai metro tunnel, and proved to be feasible and promising for future tunnel inspections. | Yadong Xue Sen Zhang Mingliang Zhou Hehua Zhu | 2021 | Underground Space2021,6,2: | 1
