1Impacts of Multi-Scale Solar Activity on Climate.Part Ⅰ:Atmospheric Circulation Patterns and Climate Extremes显示文摘The impacts of solar activity on climate are explored in this two-part study.Based on the principles of atmospheric dynamics,Part I propose an amplifying mechanism of solar impacts on winter climate extremes through changing the atmospheric circulation patterns.This mechanism is supported by data analysis of the sunspot number up to the predicted Solar Cycle 24,the historical surface temperature data,and atmospheric variables of NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis up to the February 2011 for the Northern Hemisphere winters.For low solar activity,the thermal contrast between the low-and high-latitudes is enhanced,so as the mid-latitude baroclinic ultra-long wave activity.The land-ocean thermal contrast is also enhanced,which amplifies the topographic waves.The enhanced mid-latitude waves in turn enhance the meridional heat transport from the low to high latitudes,making the atmospheric 'heat engine' more efficient than normal.The jets shift southward and the polar vortex is weakened.The Northern Annular Mode(NAM) index tends to be negative.The mid-latitude surface exhibits large-scale convergence and updrafts,which favor extreme weather/climate events to occur.The thermally driven Siberian high is enhanced,which enhances the East Asian winter monsoon(EAWM).For high solar activity,the mid-latitude circulation patterns are less wavy with less meridional transport.The NAM tends to be positive,and the Siberian high and the EAWM tend to be weaker than normal.Thus the extreme weather/climate events for high solar activity occur in different regions with different severity from those for low solar activity.The solar influence on the midto high-latitude surface temperature and circulations can stand out after removing the influence from the El Nin o-Southern Oscillation.The atmospheric amplifying mechanism indicates that the solar impacts on climate should not be simply estimated by the magnitude of the change in the solar radiation over solar cycles when it is compared with other external radiative forcings that do not influence the climate in the same way as the sun does.Hengyi WENG 2012Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2012,29,4:6
2In-situ stabilisation followed by ex-situ composting for treatment and disposal of heavy metals polluted sediments显示文摘An innovative in-situ stabilisation treatment followed by ex-situ sediment composting was tested for its ability to treat and dispose of heavy-metal-polluted sediments in a river near the Chinese Pearl Delta. First, polluted sediments were treated in-situ to stabilise the heavy metals. Then the treated sediments were dredged, dewatered and sent for high temperature aerobic composting (HTAC) treatment. Finally, the compost products were used as a fertiliser for river bank plants. The stabilisation eciency of heavy metals during the process was investigated and the results are as follows: (1) using in-situ stabilisation, the extraction concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb were reduced by 65.0%, 82.2% and 90.0%, respectively, which are much lower than the national standard given in the Identification Standard for Hazardous Waste (GB5085.3-1996); (2) chemical fraction analysis showed that heavy metals were further stabilized during the HTAC treatment; (3) the concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb in rainwater leachate through the river bank met the level of class V in the Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water in China (GB3838-2002). 3Liquid metal spiral coil enabled soft electromagnetic actuator显示文摘Soft robot is a kind of machine form with flexible deformation capability. Making flexible actuators has recently become a hot research topic in the field. In this study, we demonstrated the facile fabrication of a soft electromagnetic actuator using liquid metal coil of Ga-In alloys, and designed several illustrative mechanical devices, such as jellyfish like robot, soft fishtail and flexible manipulator. Measurements of the liquid metal coil's electrical properties confirmed that the liquid metal coil was mechanically stable under 48% uniaxial strains. Furthermore, the resistance of the liquid metal coil is stable under 60° bending deformation. Tests on the liquid metal coil's driving properties confirmed that the liquid metal coil(55 mm×55 mm×1 mm) could reach the maximum displacement amplitude of 21.5 mm with the current of 0.48 A. It was shown that the electromagnetic interaction between the magnet and the liquid metal coil enables the coil as a highly efficient actuator. 7Simultaneous growth of carbon nanotubes on inner/outer surfaces of porous polyhedra:Advanced sulfur hosts for lithium-sulfur batteries显示文摘Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived functional carbon matrices have recently attracted considerable attention as energy-storage materials.However,the development of MOF-derived carbon materials with hierarchical structures,capable of thoroughly preventing the 'shuttling' of polysulfides,is still a major challenge.Herein,we synthesized cobalt nanoparticle-containing porous carbon polyhedra with in situ grown N-doped carbon nanotube (CNT) backbone (NCCNT-Co),using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as starting material.The obtained NCCNT-Co,with interconnected N-doped CNTs on both inner and outer surfaces,possesses an integrated conductive network,which can further accelerate the transport of electrons/ions inside the whole sulfur cathode.The mesoporous structure derived from the ZIF-67 matrix and the densely immobilized CNTs,coupled with the homogeneously doped N atoms and Co nanoparticles,can efficiently trap lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) by physical confinement and chemical interactions.Furthermore,the hierarchical structure of the porous carbon polyhedra enables a high sulfur loading of up to 76 wt.% and can also buffer the volume changes of active sulfur during the lithiation process.As a result,the NCCNT-Co-S cathode delivers a high initial specific capacity of 1,300 mAh·g-1 at 0.1 C,along with a high capacity of 860 rnAh·g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 C,with an extremely low capacity decay of 0.024% per cycle.Hengyi Lu Chao Zhang Youfang Zhang Yunpeng Huang Mingkai Liu Tianxi Liu 2018Nano Research2018,11,12:3

12Comparison of the Pore Structure of Ultralow-Permeability Reservoirs Between the East and West Subsags of the Lishui Sag Using Constant-Rate Mercury Injection显示文摘In this study, the differences in reservoir parameters, such as pore radius, throat radius, and pore-throat ratio, between the east and west subsags of the Lishui Sag are analyzed by using data obtained from a constant-rate mercury injection experiment. Furthermore, the quality of the reservoirs in the two subsags is systematically evaluated. Results show that the throat radius of the Lishui west subsag is larger than that of the east subsag, and this parameter has a positive correlation with reservoir quality. However, the pore-throat ratio of the east subsag is larger than that of the west subsag, which has an inverse relationship with reservoir quality. The main reasons for this reservoir difference can be attributed to sedimentation and diagenesis. The sedimentary facies types of the Lishui east subsag are the fan delta, shore lake, shallow lake, and shore shallow lake;their sandstone composition maturity is low;the clay mineral content is high;and the rock has undergone strong diagenesis. Therefore, the physical conditions of the reservoir are poor. However, the sandstones in the Lishui west subsag have weak cementation and compaction, mainly with an intergranular pore structure type, which leads to good connectivity between pores. 15Impacts of Multi-Scale Solar Activity on Climate.Part Ⅱ:Dominant Timescales in Decadal-Centennial Climate Variability显示文摘Part Ⅱ of this study detects the dominant decadal-centennial timescales in four SST indices up to the 2010/2011 winter and tries to relate them to the observed 11-yr and 88-yr solar activity with the sunspot number up to Solar Cycle 24.To explore plausible solar origins of the observed decadal-centennial timescales in the SSTs and climate variability in general,we design a simple one-dimensional dynamical system forced by an annual cycle modulated by a small-amplitude single-or multi-scale 'solar activity.' Results suggest that nonlinear harmonic and subharmonic resonance of the system to the forcing and period-doubling bifurcations are responsible for the dominant timescales in the system,including the 60-yr timescale that dominates the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation.The dominant timescales in the forced system depend on the system's parameter setting.Scale enhancement among the dominant response timescales may result in dramatic amplifications over a few decades and extreme values of the time series on various timescales.Three possible energy sources for such amplifications and extremes are proposed.Dynamical model results suggest that solar activity may play an important yet not well recognized role in the observed decadal-centennial climate variability.The atmospheric dynamical amplifying mechanism shown in Part Ⅰ and the nonlinear resonant and bifurcation mechanisms shown in Part Ⅱ help us to understand the solar source of the multi-scale climate change in the 20th century and the fact that different solar influenced dominant timescales for recurrent climate extremes for a given region or a parameter setting.Part Ⅱ also indicates that solar influences on climate cannot be linearly compared with non-cyclic or sporadic thermal forcings because they cannot exert their influences on climate in the same way as the sun does.Hengyi WENG 2012Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2012,29,4:2

18Establishment of induced pluripotent stem cells from aged mice using bone marrow-derived myeloid cells显示文摘If induced pluripotent stem(iPS)cells are to be used to treat damaged tissues or repair organs in elderly patients,it will be necessary to establish iPS cells from their tissues.To determine the feasibility of using this technology with elderly patients,we asked if it was indeed possible to establish iPS cells from the bone marrow(BM)of aged mice.BM cells from aged C57BL/6 mice carrying the green fluorescence protein(GFP)gene were cultured with granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor(GM-CSF)for 4 days.Four factors(Oct3/4,Sox2,Klf4 and c-Myc)were introduced into the BM-derived myeloid(BM-M)cells.The efficiency of generating iPS cells from aged BM cultured in GM-CSF was low.However,we succeeded in obtaining BM-M-iPS cells from aged C57BL/6 mice,which carried GFP.Our BM-M-iPS cells expressed SSEA-1 and Pou5f1 and were positive for alkaline phosphatase staining.The iPS cells did make teratoma with three germ layers following injection into syngeneic C57BL/6 mice,and can be differentiated to three germ layers in vitro.By co-culturing with OP9,the BM-M-iPS cells can be differentiated to the myeloid lineage.The differentiated BM-M-iPS cells proliferated well in the presence of GM-CSF,and lost expression of Nanog and Pou5f1,at least in part,due to methylation of their promoters.On the contrary,Tnf and Il1b gene expression was upregulated and their promoters were hypomethylated.Zhao Cheng Sachiko Ito Naomi Nishio Hengyi Xiao Rong Zhang Haruhiko Suzuki Yayoi Okawa Toyoaki Murohara Ken-ichi Isobe 2011Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2011,3,2:1
