2Leaching of phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash by means of acid extraction followed by adsorption on orange waste gel显示文摘Ashes from sewage sludge incineration have a high phosphorus content, approximately 8% (W/W), which indicates a potential resource of the limiting nutrient. Incineration of sewage sludge with subsequent recovery of phosphorus is a relatively new sludge treatment technique. In this article, the leaching of phosphorus by using sulfuric acid as well as hydrochloric acid by means of several batch experiments was presented. At the same time a selective recovery of phosphorus by adsorption was also discussed. The effects of acid concentration, temperature and time on extraction were studied. The phosphorus leaching increased with the increase in acid concentration and temperature. Kinetic studies showed that the complete leaching of phosphorus took place in less than 4 h. Selective adsorption of phosphorus by using orange waste gel provided a hint for recovery of this natural resource, which eventually could meet the ever-increasing requirement for phosphorus. 3Helicobacter pylori infection and liver diseases: Epidemiology and insights into pathogenesis显示文摘Both Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection and liver diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), have high prevalences worldwide, and the relationship between H. pylori infection and liver disease has been discussed for many years. Although positive correlations between H. pylori and NAFLD have been identified in some clinical and experimental studies, nega-tive correlations have also been obtained in high-quality clinical studies. Associations between H. pylori and the pathogenesis of chronic viral hepatitis, mainly disease progression with fibrosis, have also been suggested in some clinical studies. Concerning HCC, a possible role for H. pylori in hepatocarcinogenesis has been identified since H. pylori genes have frequently been detected in resected HCC specimens. However, no study hasrevealed the direct involvement of H. pylori in promoting the development of HCC. Although findings regarding the correlations between H. pylori and liver disease pathogenesis have been accumulating, the existing data do not completely lead to an unequivocal conclusion. 4A review of rapid transport of pesticides from sloping farmland to surface waters: Processes and mitigation strategies显示文摘Pesticides applied to sloping farmland may lead to surface water contamination through rapid transport processes as influenced by the complex topography and high spatial variability of soil properties and land use in hilly or mountainous regions. However, the fate of pesticides applied to sloping farmland has not been sufficiently elucidated. This article reviews the current understanding of pesticide transport from sloping farmland to surface water. It examines overland flow and subsurface lateral flow in areas where surface soil is underlain by impervious subsoil or rocks and tile drains. It stresses the importance of quantifying and modeling the contributions of various pathways to rapid pesticide loss at catchment and regional scales. Such models could be used in scenario studies for evaluating the effectiveness of possible mitigation strategies such as constructing vegetated strips, depressions, wetlands and drainage ditches, and implementing good agricultural practices. 5Exercise and gut microbiota: clinical implications for the feasibility of Tai Chi显示文摘Recent studies have shown exercise is associated with changes in the gut microbiota in humans as well as in experimental animals. Tai Chi is an exercise that integrates a martial art, deep breathing and mediation, and has various beneficial effects for health. This review summarizes current knowledge and recent literature on the association between exercise and gut microbiota, and explores the feasibility of Tai Chi for improving gut microbiota composition and function. Pub Med/MEDLINE was used to search the English literature for the keywords exercise and gut microbiota. Fourteen relevant studies were identified. In humans, exercise increases the gut microbial diversity. However, the evidence for this association is weak, as previous studies were small-scale, non-controlled studies of short duration or cross-sectional design. In animals, exercise alters the composition of gut microbiota, with some studies suggesting exercise increases the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio. However, these results are controversial, partly because host genetics and physical fitness also influence gut microbiota. Furthermore, the intensity of exercise may play a key role in how exercise affects gut microbiota. Tai Chi is a moderate-intensity exercise that improves immune function and inflammation of the gut. Tai Chi may also affect gut microbiota through vagal modulation and mediating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. However, no studies have investigated the association between Tai Chi and gut microbiota. 7A comparison of three methods of decellularization of pig corneas to reduce immunogenicity显示文摘·AIM: To investigate whether decellularization using different techniques can reduce immunogenicity of the cornea, and to explore the decellularized cornea as a scaffold for cultured corneal endothelial cells(CECs).Transplantation of decellularized porcine corneas increases graft transparency and survival for longer periods compared with fresh grafts.·METHODS: Six-month-old wild-type pig corneas were cut into 100-200 μm thickness, and then decellularized by three different methods: 1) 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS); 2) hypoxic nitrogen(N2); and 3) hypertonic NaCl. Thickness and transparency were assessed visually. Fresh and decellularized corneas were stained with hematoxylin/eosin(H&E), and for the presence of galactose-α1,3-galactose(Gal) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid(NeuGc, a nonGal antigen). Also, a human IgM/IgG binding assay was performed. Cultured porcine CECs were seeded on the surface of the decellularized cornea and examined after H&E staining.· RESULTS: All three methods of decellularization reduced the number of keratocytes in the stromal tissue by >80% while the collagen structure remained preserved. No remaining nuclei stained positive for Gal or NeuGc, and expression of these oligosaccharides on collagen was also greatly decreased compared to expression on fresh corneas. Human IgM/IgG binding to decellularized corneal tissue was considerably reduced compared to fresh corneal tissue. 8The potential of genetically-engineered pigs in providing an alternative source of organs and cells for transplantation显示文摘There is a critical shortage of organs, cells, and corneas from deceased human donors worldwide. There are also shortages of human blood for transfusion. A potential solution to all of these problems is the transplantation of organs, cells, and corneas from a readily available animal species, such as the pig, and the transfusion of red blood cells from pigs into humans. However, to achieve these ends, major immunologic and other barriers have to be overcome. Considerable progress has been made in this respect by the genetic modification of pigs to protect their tissues from the primate immune response and to correct several molecular incompatibilities that exist between pig and primate. These have included knockout of genes responsible for the expression of major antigenic targets for primate natural anti-pig antibodies, insertion of human complementand coagulation-regulatory transgenes, and knockdown of swine leukocyte antigens that stimulate the primate's adaptive immune response. As a result of these manipulations, the administration of novel immunosuppressive agents, and other innovations, pig hearts have now functioned in baboons for 6-8 months, pig islets have maintained normoglycemia in diabetic monkeys for > 1 year, and pig corneas have maintained transparency for several months. Clinical trials of pig islet transplantation are already in progress. 9Occurrence of emerging flame retardants from e-waste recycling activities in the northern part of Vietnam显示文摘This study investigated the contamination status of 21 emerging flame retardants(FRs)in soils(n=32)and river sediments(n=8)from an e-waste recycling(EWR)site in the northern part of Vietnam.Among analyzed FRs,higher levels of decabromodiphenyl ethane(DBDPE)(NDe4200 ng/g dw),1,2-bis-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane(BTBPE)(NDe350 ng/g dw)and Dechlorane Plus isomers(DPs)(NDe65 ng/g dw)were found in soils near EWR workshops and open burning places.The highest concentrations of DBDPE(20 ng/g dw),BTBPE(5.7 ng/g dw)and DPs(6.7 ng/g dw)were also detected in sediments collected from the middle of the EWR site.The levels decreased concomitantly with increasing distance from the EWR site.These results indicate that these FRs were released to the surrounding environment from improper recycling activities,such as manual dismantling of devices and open burning of e-wastes.Moreover,the estimated daily intakes of those FRs via soil ingestion were approximately ten times higher for children than adults.To our knowledge,this is a first comprehensive study on characterization of soil and sediment contamination by a series of emerging FRs at an EWR site in Vietnam.Masayuki Someya Go Suzuki Alin C.Ionas Nguyen Minh Tue Fuchao Xu Hidenori Matsukami Adrian Covaci Le Huu Tuyen Pham Hung Viet Shin Takahashi Shinsuke Tanabe Hidetaka Takigami 2016Emerging Contaminants2016,2,2:5
10Analysis of monomeric and oligomeric organophosphorus flame retardants in fish muscle tissues using liquid chromatographyeelectrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry:Application to Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)from an e-waste processing area in northern Vietnam显示文摘Using electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry combined with liquid chromatography(LC),a novel analytical method was developed to quantify eight monomeric organophosphorus flame retardants(m-PFRs)and three oligomeric organophosphorus flame retardants(o-PFRs)in fish muscle samples.The optimization and validation experiments indicate that the developed method can determine accurately the concentrations of analytes in fish muscle samples.The recoveries of analytes in fish muscle samples were in the range of 74-105%.The coefficients of variation of the concentrations of analytes in fish muscle samples were 0.6-8.9%.The concentrations of analytes in procedural blanks were below the limit of quantification(LOQ)values.Furthermore,the developed method was applied to the analysis of m-PFRs and o-PFRs in the muscle samples of tilapias collected from an electronic waste(ewaste)processing area in northern Vietnam.The concentrations of m-PFRs such as tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate(TCEP),tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate(TCIPP),and triphenyl phosphate(TPHP)were dominant among the investigated m-PFRs.The respective concentrations of TCEP,TCIPP,and TPHP were up to 160,300,and 230 ng g^-1 lipid weight,respectively,whereas those of o-PFRs were up to 10 ng g^-1 lipid weight.The results of this study indicate lower accumulation potential of o-PFRs compared with m-PFRs for the first time.Hidenori Matsukami Go Suzuki Nguyen Minh Tue Le Huu Tuyen Pham Hung Viet Shin Takahashi Shinsuke Tanabe Hidetaka Takigami 2016Emerging Contaminants2016,2,2:5
11Endoscopic ultrasonography can diagnose distal biliary strictures without a mass on computed tomography显示文摘AIM:To assess the diagnostic ability of endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS)for evaluating causes of dista biliary strictures shown on endoscopic retrograde chol angiopancreatography(ERCP)or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP),even without iden tifiable mass on computed tomography(CT). METHODS:The diagnostic ability of EUS was retro spectively analyzed and compared with that of routine cytology(RC)and tumor markers in 34 patients with distal biliary strictures detected by ERCP or MRCP a Dokkyo Medical School Hospital from December 2005 to December 2008,without any adjacent mass or ec centric thickening of the bile duct on CT that could cause biliary strictures.Findings considered as benign strictures on EUS included preservation of the normasonographic layers of the bile duct wall,irrespective of the presence of a mass lesion.Other strictures were considered malignant.Final diagnosis of underlying diseases was made by pathological examination in 18 cases after surgical removal of the samples,and by clinical follow-up for>10 mo in 16 cases. RESULTS:Seventeen patients(50%)were finally di- agnosed with benign conditions,including 6'normal' subjects,while 17 patients(50%)were diagnosed with malignant disease.In terms of diagnostic ability,EUS showed 94.1%sensitivity,82.3%specificity,84.2% positive predictive value,93.3%negative predictive value(NPV)and 88.2%accuracy for identifying ma- lignant and benign strictures.EUS was more sensi- tive than RC(94.1%vs 62.5%,P=0.039).NPV was also better for EUS than for RC(93.3%vs 57.5%,P= 0.035).In addition,EUS provided significantly higher sensitivity than tumor markers using 100 U/mL as the cutoff level of carbohydrate antigen 19-9(94.1%vs 53%,P=0.017).On EUS,biliary stricture that was fi- nally diagnosed as malignant showed as a hypoechoic, irregular mass,with obstruction of the biliary duct and invasion to surrounding tissues. 12Effects of estradiol and progesterone on the proinflammatory cytokine production by mononuclear cells from patients with chronic hepatitis C显示文摘AIM:To investigate the effects of estradiol (E2) and progesterone on the unstimulated and oxidative stressstimulated production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and macrophage chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with chronic hepatitis C and healthy controls. METHODS:The PBMCs were separated from agematched 72 males and 71 females with and without chronic hepatitis C, who were divided into two groups based on a mean menopausal age of 50 years. Oxidative stress was induced by hydrogen peroxide in the cells incubated in serum-free media. Cytokines in the culture supernatant were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS:The highest levels of the spontaneous production of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-8, and MCP-1 by the unstimulated PBMCs were in the older male patients with chronic hepatitis C and the lowest levels were in the premenopausal female healthy controls. E2 inhibited the cytokine production by the unstimulated PBMCs from the older male and post-menopausal female patients, which was further stimulated by progesterone. The exposure to hydrogen peroxide in the PBMCs from the younger male and pre-menopausal female healthy subjects induced the production of cytokines. The change rates of the hydrogen peroxide-stimulated cytokine production were suppressed by E2 and enhanced by progesterone. 16Causative anti-diabetic drugs and the underlying clinical factors for hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes显示文摘Recent clinical trials indicated that the intensive glycemic control do not reduce cardiovascular disease mortality among diabetic patients, challenging a significance of the strict glycemic control in diabetes management. Furthermore, retrospective analysis of the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes study demonstrated a significant association betweenhypoglycemia and mortality. Here, we systematically reviewed the drug-induced hypoglycemia, and also the underlying clinical factors for hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes. The sulfonylurea use is significantly associated with severe hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. The use of biguanide(approximately 45%-76%) and thiazolidinediones(approximately 15%-34%) are also highly associated with the development of severe hypoglycemia. In patients treated with insulin, the intensified insulin therapy is more frequently associated with severe hypoglycemia than the conventional insulin therapy and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. Among the underlying clinical factors for development of severe hypoglycemia, low socioeconomic status, aging, longer duration of diabetes, high Hb A1 c and low body mass index, comorbidities are precipitating factors for severe hypoglycemia. 17Surfactant-enhanced flushing enhances colloid transport and alters macroporosity in diesel-contaminated soil显示文摘Soil contamination by diesel has been often reported as a result of accidental spillage,leakage and inappropriate use. Surfactant-enhanced soil flushing is a common remediation technique for soils contaminated by hydrophobic organic chemicals. In this study, soil flushing with linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS, an anionic surfactant) was conducted for intact columns(15 cm in diameter and 12 cm in length) of diesel-contaminated farmland purple soil aged for one year in the field. Dynamics of colloid concentration in column outflow during flushing, diesel removal rate and resulting soil macroporosity change by flushing were analyzed. Removal rate of n-alkanes(representing the diesel) varied with the depth of the topsoil in the range of 14%–96% while the n-alkanes present at low concentrations in the subsoil were completely removed by LAS-enhanced flushing. Much higher colloid concentrations and larger colloid sizes were observed during LAS flushing in column outflow compared to water flushing. The X-ray micro-computed tomography analysis of flushed and unflushed soil cores showed that the proportion of fine macropores(30–250 μm in diameter)was reduced significantly by LAS flushing treatment. This phenomenon can be attributed to enhanced clogging of fine macropores by colloids which exhibited higher concentration due to better dispersion by LAS. 18Daily physical activity and type 2 diabetes: A review显示文摘Physical activity improves glycemic control and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease(CVD) and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D). Moderate to vigorous physical activity is recommended to manage T2D; however, patients with T2D can be physically weak, making it difficult to engage in the recommended levels of physical activity. Daily physical activity includes various activities performed during both occupational and leisure time such as walking, gardening, and housework that type 2 diabetic patients should be able to perform without considerable physical burden. This review focuses on the association between daily physical activity and T2D. Walking was the most common form of daily physical activity, with numerous studies demonstrating its beneficial effects on reducing the risk of T2D, CVD, and mortality. Walking for at least 30 min per day was shown to reduce the risk of T2D by approximately 50%. Additionally, walking was associated with a reduction in mortality. In contrast, evidence was extremely limited regarding other daily physical activities such as gardening and housework in patients with T2D. Recent studies have suggested daily physical activity, including non-exercise activity thermogenesis, to be favorably associated with metabolic risks and mortality. 19Fulminant gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease concomitant with cytomegalovirus infection:Case report and literature review显示文摘Here,we report a case of fulminant gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease(GI-GVHD) with cytomegalovirus(CMV) infection in 44-year-old woman.Despite the difficulties associated with the treatment of GIGVHD and GI-CMV disease,the mucosal findings and the clinical course showed marked improvements during long-term clinical observation.The endoscopic findings were remarkable,with diffuse sloughing mucosa in the stomach and highly active inflammation and deep discrete ulcers throughout the colon.Changes in the CMV quantitative polymerase chain reaction results were correlated with the endoscopic mucosal findings and were useful for assessing the efficacy of the treatment.Although a definite diagnosis of GI-GVHD is generally made by endoscopy with biopsy,the gross appearance of this disease can vary depending on the endoscopy.In this paper,we also conduct a literature review of patients with GI-GVHD.Hidetaka Okubo Naoyoshi Nagata Naomi Uemura 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,4:3
